    I had a Cooper S 1275 . Mine was 9FSAY 38717. I used to solo race it and was pretty successful. Mine was red with the black roof. 1966 and I bought it from the original owner in 1969. I drove it loaded with my toolbox and everything I could fit in across the United states. I sold it in Los Angeles and bought a 1967 mk2. I love seeing yours. Brings back a flood of memories.

      Tartan red is a great colour! What are the mk2s like in comparison?

    • @timtompkins150
      @timtompkins150 Před 3 lety

      The 67 mk2 I had was one of the last original cars brought into the US. It was not very different except for the square tail lamps and the angular trim surrounding the front grille. I never felt that same bond with any other car that I had with my 66 car.

    Hi Alex, the back of the S is so immaculate it’s already better than anything that originally came out of the factory! (In fact I would go as far as to say “if Lexus built classic minis, this would be it” ha ha!) - Hope to see it at a show next year. Stay safe and well buddy. 👍🇬🇧

    Hi Alex,
    Great S, been waiting for someone to mention the badge grommets and they didn't, so :
    The little plastic grommets fit into the hole in the boot lid first ( bit like a wall plug ) then you press the badge in which makes a nice water tight fit. That's why you couldn't get the old ones off when pulling from the inside, when the badge was still pressed into the grommet. Fitted hundreds - ex Austin Rover mechanic! Otherwise every time you wash the car water will dribble in and down into the boot seam, apart from the fact just being pushed on from inside your likely to knock them off and end up losing a badge. Hope this helps, nice to see such a beautiful collection of Minis, miss mine had Minis from the 70's until I finished rallying in 2005 and sold them one by one, now retired and wish I'd kept the last S I built, especially after seeing yours! Regards Steve.

    Alex, I think that's probably the best example of a Cooper S I've seen to date. Many years ago (I'm quite old now) I had a Mk 1 970 S (very rare) and then a Mk 2 1275 S, both in Tartan Red & Black. I've now got an R56 JCW with the better N18 engine. Deffo approve of your plan to get it back to standard although I never liked the standard steering wheel and always used the fitting to lower the steering column. I tried 1.5" SU's on the 1275 but preferred it on 1.25"'s with the original Coopers air cleaner box. A lovely example....don't drive it in the rain !
