Not entirely true- when a government official ( particularly a teacher) feels that the health, welfare, safety, and civil rights of a child they can act in loco parentis (and are actually legally obligated to do so in many states) to safeguard that student. I believe it's something like "educators owe students in their custody a duty to anticipate foreseeable dangers and to take reasonable steps to protect those students from that danger."

Or rather people should expect it of themselves and train. You don't buy a car and just drive home, if you've never operated one in your life and all you know is that steering wheel makes it turn. Bob Wells is informing people to live out of an RV or if need be even out of a personal car (think Toyota Prius) and to do so on very tight budgets (if need be). We will be homeschooling this year. The last 2 years we had our children in public school after many years of homeschooling that was going well. The COVID issue has made it unsafe for our family as my wife's health has become a subject of concern and we can't afford for her to get it.

When did americans become so dependent on what the "government" says about everything?
I might be 65 now but I can remember when the "government's recommendations came from more than one source and were debated openly before becoming recommendations. Now they come out in the dark of night and are shoved down our throats with a hefty dose of fear behind them. What happened?

I'm a little older than you. In the sixties we were going to change the world. Everyone I knew was devoted to fixing the problems. One day I noticed that I was the last one. Every one of the people around me had "grown up" and gone off in search of wealth and status. What did you do? Did you want a better world or did you want more and more and more for yourself? That's what happened. We are to blame!

We will homeschool and we are trying to get our research done to make a choice of which platform. Thank you Mitch, your thoughts are held in high esteem in our home. Why is it difficult? Because my 5 year old is autistic and the services, education and interaction she needs, and thanks to the stupid ass insurance laws here, can only get is from public school. These years between 3 and 6 are the most important for her to have any type of an independent life. I don't have the knowledge nor the training to be a speech therapist, occupation therapist and special ed teacher. Every part of me knows in her class is the best place for her. But I live in Oklahoma where people will fight for the right to carry a gun and fight to not have to wear a mask. A state where the governor told everyone to go out to their favorite restaurant and now he has Covid. So my choice is keep her home and watch her regress even further risking her mental and yes physical health or sending her to school and getting her back to the routine that sees her thriving at least a little and in doing so risk her physical health. No matter what decision I make, it is a risk to her. That's why it is a difficult decision.

You are going to make the best decision you possibly can because you want the best for your daughter, but you don't have a crystal ball. Wishing your family all the best. ❤️

I think if parents know an adult they trust is not having to go out to work, maybe that adult could open their home to 4 or 5 kids. The kids would bring their tablets, would be safely supervised in a home school 'bubble' and the parents could go to work.

I'm somewhat encouraged by the news of major school districts cancelling in-person classes around the country... I hope this movement grows to include your district. You deserve a safe workplace. You're, um, raising our next generation.

Ya'll have given me a great idea! Reading about the struggles of parents in the comments section inspires me. I teach at a community college, and because we are not returning to campus, enrollment is lower than usual. This means that I will likely have fewer classes and more time on my hands. I used to teach grades k-12, so I'll offer courses via Skype, or Zoom (I've learned how to teach via teleconference), based on parent/student needs. I'm not sure how to go about finding out what is most needed, but I'll get started ---- Beau has inspired me to be more responsible for my community at large, and to 'step up' when government fails us, more severely than usual.
---Edit: I am super open to suggestions about how to get started.

There's a reason that "safety first" is a mantra that we all grew up hearing; nobody ever told me to be safe as long as it was convenient.
