Sorry, I had a follow up thought. If the government weighs the risk and insists that schools reopen by way of law or lost funding and then someone dies (as they most assuredly will), I feel like a case could probably be made for negligible homicide. I'm certainly no lawyer, and I don't know how that would work legally, but it seems to follow pretty logically to me.

There is homeschool and school from home. This situation might actually push it so that schools finally put some effort into modernizing alternative schooling, which is currently stuck around 1970 or whenever the ability to photocopy was cutting edge.
Until they actually have a sure way of fighting the virus there shouldn’t be any kind of push to open. Almost every state in the country is going up and still trying to open at the same time. Which makes us look bad considering other countries have already gotten their situation under control. Granted the U.S. is a larger country but we are supposed to have more resources and capabilities to deal with these sort of situations!
I truly wish you the best of luck, even when the pandemic is over. I don't mean to be a 'wet blanket,' but teaching has become one of the least valued professions in our society. You will likely face being overworked, underpaid, unsupported by parents and administration and an incredible love for your students that will engender unspeakable frustration, with the lack of support.
As a Canadian, when this all started, I laughed at how it was being handled in the United States, then when it continued and people started getting sick and dying en masse, I could only shake my head. I am at the point where I genuinely feel sorry for all the innocent people suffering, dying. In Canada, we just started talking about returning to school now that we are down to 200 cases a day. It’s likely that schools won’t reopen until 2021. Rome is burning and it seems like the leadership is arguing over what octane of gasoline to pour onto the fires. May God help you.

The big argument I've been seeing more and more lately about schools is, "if they don't reopen we shouldn't pay teachers." Which is both stupid and terrifying.
why doesn't anyone talk about not paying superintendents? our makes a comfortable 6 figures, 4 times higher than the state median wage. anyone know what we get for that? i sure don't
If they're still doing any kind of work they should be paid for that, but beyond that I also think everyone, whether they're working or not, should be getting UBI payments from the government right now.
Remind those people that teachers are under contract for the school year, and legally have to be paid by the school district even if schools shut down. If schools shut down, teachers will still be working from home.
There is supposed to be a very different social experience between school and prison. Prison has a unique social experience that isn't preparation for outside it. There are already an increasing number of metal detectors and security guards in US schools because they won't combat gun proliferation outside school.
I teach 3 and 4 year olds. Socialization is the primary goal. I don't want to teach in that manner either. It goes against the very core of what child development is all about. Nor do I wish to be offered as sacrifice so some one can go back to work.

Funny thing happened in our own school district. During a "virtual" school board meeting they decided to reopen schools for the fall. Yup, a virtual meeting. If they don't think it is safe to have an actual board meeting, then why do they think it is okay for kids to return to school?
Right? Where I live, the colleges are all switched to online classes, but somehow elementary school kids will be safe? How do we expect little kids to be compliant with masks and social distancing when adults have a hard time with it?

I homeschooled my daughter for 9 years. Inevitably, the first question a non-homeschooler asks when they find out is "...but what about socialization?" My answer was always the same. I spent 13 years (K-12) in public school here in the US, in 4 different states, and there wasn't a year that went by where I wasn't informed: "young lady you are NOT here to socialize." And the longer we homeschooled, the more evident that became. I also realized that while in school, both my daughter and I were there to learn unacceptable behaviors, to be bullied, to weaken our self-esteem, and to catch every airborne and surface contagion possible. Schools are Petri dishes, both for germs and as sociology experiments. They were deemed compulsory as a means to get kids out of the factories and the movement to do so garnered support by assuring the rural parents whose children were not in that position, that they would not lose their helpers on the farms by tailoring the school calendar around the farming calendar. Which we still do to this day! Anyone who has ever dealt with education or organizing groups of kids learns pretty damned fast that a whole lot of the day is wasted. Kids are in school for 6½ hours a day, and *may* get 2 hours of solid instruction in. It is far more sensible for all involved to allow for split schedules and virtual schools so that learning can happen without the thousands of daily distractions and life-threatening viruses. Quality over quantity, teaching for lifelong knowledge instead of teaching to a test, having them engaged without distraction. God forbid they might not have to spend the first two months of each school year on remediation because of the lack of retention. However, if they are not changing classrooms and dealing with everything else that is not learning during the school day, they might find a way to teach kids even more in the time they have them... and it won't take 6½ hours a day to do it. If kids are put into lockdown, and like Beau said, treated like prisoners, that too will detract from learning, detract from teaching, and detract from motivation. We'll see the dropout rate go up, the quality of learning go down, and have an entire cross-section of American students who will be doomed to failure and poverty. Why force everything negative when you can use it as an opportunity to actually to make these kids' experiences better instead of worse.
"field trips to cemeteries". Clearly the most macabre statement you have uttered since I subscribed to this channel, at around 50K. Unsettling, to say the least.
Before you choose whether you think schools should open or not please ask yourself the following questions Questions for School Openings: • If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid? • If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days? • Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that? • What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid? • Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay? • Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that? • What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long? • What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out? • How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid? • How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer? 30% of the teachers in the US are over 50. About 16% of the total deaths in the US are people between the ages of 45-65. We are choosing to put our teachers AND STUDENTS in danger. There has to be a solid plan for safety moving forward!
And Orange County voted TODAY to ship their kids off to school. No changes in the school. No masks. No distancing. No precautions. That will work out well.

Could you imagine having to tell your child that their favorite teacher passed away because they got sick. Let's add to the trauma of this whole thing. I get the need for kids to socialize. There are ways other than sending them to school. During shut down, I watched my neighbors invite friends and/or family over so the kids could play. The adults sat in the driveway, watching the kids. The parents kept their distance, and took precautions as CDC advised. Just saying... ❤️😷

I am a teacher. Thank you for being a person who has common sense. I’d even risk the flip side to the numbers game... Though not as common, COVID-19 is a danger to children & teenagers and we really don’t know long-term effects. How many students are they going to risk? I’ve had the hellish experience of a student death (from other causes) and I NEVER want to go to another funeral of a student. Nope. It’s not fear-mongering when part of a district reopening plan includes a TEMPLATE letter to address the death of a student/staff member while in academic session.
Thanks for sharing your frustration on this issue. I am a college professor whose school is planning on a partial reopen. Our administration has provided precious few answers to questions about how we'll handle things like non-compliant students, quarantine, and social distancing. For example, we have a 30 sq ft / student policy right now. Sounds great, right? Except social distancing guidelines are 2m or roughly 6 ft between people. That's 113 sq ft / student...just slightly larger than the 30 sq ft allocated. How do you quarantine students in dorm rooms when they don't have access to food, bathrooms, or showers? Do you quarantine an entire class if one person tests positive? Currently we're going to have students attend classes 1/3rd or so of the time. Some of the classes I've taught have been 220 + students. So one positive will literally cause hundreds of quarantines...where? In dorm rooms? What about roommates? People who share bathrooms? I just don't understand why people aren't taking this seriously. On our campus of 46,000 people, we could have hundreds of deaths this semester. Hundreds of lives cut short just so we can get back to "normal".
Some schools in South Africa had to close as soon as they opened due to some staff and learners infection. So there is not enough reason yet to take the risk imo.
Tamales21 I said the very same thing a week or so ago! A Florida teacher said it’s illegal to strike. If they do the are immediately stripped of licensing and fired. But I still say it should be organized and a strike called.... they can’t find enough subs to fill all those classrooms.
@@trevorjarvis3050 Even if that is true and they don't win a lawsuit, they can still join the picket line. Maybe a banner, "Fired for striking to protect your children from diseases like COVID." The teachers would use the appeal to emotion of 'children'; and probably better capitalization too.

You'll do great. And every parent who keeps their kids home makes it safer for the parents who feel they have to send their kids and the in person teachers. Imagine- if a classroom of 20 is cut to 10, it's that fewer chances to get or spread the virus.
I just want to share a nice joke from my country. Our lockdown had a rule of 2+2 - max 2 people could be in a group and people should keep 2 meters away from each other. When the lockdown ended in May, people were relieved, they could keep the distance they were used to. Instead of 2 meters, they could now again be at 5m.
For my daughter, who has Asperger's and anxiety, being home has allowed her to become better socialized. She doesn't have the anxieties that come with eye contact, worrying about kids picking on her hair, her acne, her imperfect teeth, her not-name-brand clothes, teachers getting frustrated with her inability to understand some things. No more buzzing lights, sliding chairs, slamming lockers, pencils scratching on paper, bells blaring, loud lunch room, crowded hallways, grumpy teachers and all of the other sensory assaults that continue for hours upon hours without break in school. She is more comfortable online, and is more herself, which has led to the other kids liking her more, not bullying her, giving her a chance. She came home everyday from school depressed, often in tears, and having no friends. Now she is talking to other kids for several hours a day. She has introduced her classmates, who are 14 - 16 to Minecraft...something they used to pick on her and another non-speaking Autistic boy in their grade, for playing. They all love it and play with her every day. I hear her laughing all day long with them on the game, on the phone, on facetime, while helping each other with school work. There are a good dozen kids wanting time with her each day. She's a different kid. I dread school opening back up and life for her going back to 8 hours a day spent in a mini prison.
I’m so happy to hear that your daughter found a way to socialize and have fun! I thing it’s completely irresponsible to send kids back without completely knowing the risks involved here.
It wouldn't make sense to send her back to a failing system that was clearly doing more harm than good. We owe it to the world to produce happier , healthier , and more productive citizens. Your daughter sounds like she's now more involved in life with a reason to live it. how can you take that away?

I love the Florida parents who are saying, “I’m unemployed. I’d be happy to teach in a classroom.” Ha! They have no idea the amount of work that goes into passing all the proper screening and certification just to walk into a classroom. And the rules and regulations that have to be followed to stay in that classroom would drive them insane. Parenting Timmy at home is drastically different from teaching 185 students all with different backgrounds and learning histories. Florida has a teacher shortage for a reason. If school campuses open next month, that shortage might become even bigger.
Good on Ye Beau..... btw..... kids in Australia have been schooled ' on air'. For years. They are too far in the outback to travel. They seem to have survived.
Yeah... I've been waiting for this 'transition to greatness' for some time now. Opening schools, which generally serve as Petri dishes in the best of times, in order to convey a sense of normalcy to the public (and especially to the sacred stock market) is very much magical thinking on the part of Trump and his enablers.
School at home is great for most kids but for the ones like my daughter who are autistic, virtual classes aren't an option. she is already in a special ed class on an IEP. I don't have the skills nor the training to be her teacher let alone her speech/occupational therapist. She is on a year round program and even then regresses drastically during the holiday breaks. Insurance won't cover the ABA therapy in this hell hole of a state so basically our only choices are send her to school and take our chances or keep her home and know the most important treatment years for her to have any kind of an independent life are lost. A little bit of leadership from Trump and DeVos could have prevented this whole freaking mess.
Like yours, there are cases where learning at home may be problematic or impossible. There are two possible solutions I see. Either you send ONLY these cases into a properly set up learning environment with the necessary safeguards in place, or you provide the required assistance in place in the home the children live in. Both would require funding be provided to achieve the goal.
My grandson also is an kiddo with autism. He also is falling behind. When in school he interacts with others and has improved speech. With distance learning he goes farther and farther inside his mind and doesn’t communicate. His special ed aide has agreed to be part of our “quarenteam” to help him stay more vocal and to help with learning. (God bless him!). Build the team that you can and keep asking teachers to help. Ask for meetings to address concerns, but if one or two can’t be solved now, be sure the teachers know it will need addressing when it can be. Sometimes you just have to hang on. We are with you on that count.
I was watching RTUK today and a doctor was on talking about the virus impact in America. He said that if Florida was a country, it would be the fourth hottest spot in the world. There's no way little ones should be sent back to school so they can come back and transmit this vile pox to their older family members, not to mention the risk to the teachers and school staff. I wish you all well over there folks.
This is what I ask for every time any organization wants to "reopen". Tell me ahead of time exactly how many people have to get infected for you to give up on the idea.

Hey Rick. I have been watching Beau's videos for a long time. Maybe I don't know what 'on point' means. I have never heard him say anything I disapproved of. Maybe you mean that 10% of the time he is pointless?? I am so confused. I don't mean to be clueless. It comes natural.
@@kathryncasey4114 He is intelligent with sound logic and lays out his arguments very well which I also agree with. I will give an example of why I say "90%" which trust me from my prospective is really high agreement rate. I will break down what I feel he missed in this video and why I think he missed it... He is arguing that schools still need to stay closed. He doesn't specify which schools, so I am left to assume he means all US schools. I do agree that schools need to be treated as potential hotspots since children breed sickness. I also agree that Trump only wants to open schools to get the reaction that things are returning to normal. I agree that sending children and teachers back to school recklessly is dangerous to the point of neglectful homicide levels. All of these arguments are valid and even more so when you understand that he is arguing from the view point of someone in Florida. Florida shouldn't have anything open but essential businesses, but that's is not the case in every state. Which is where an in-depth breakdown of state powers, local powers, and federal oversight would be required. Now where I disagree: I live in Ohio one of the first states to shut down and still hasn't opened everything up yet. Tho the governor has released a plan to open schools based on health of the county and current increase of covid-19 cases. To give a break down it goes like this... Level 1 - No new cases; schools fully opened 5 days a week. Masks required Level 2 - Low level of new cases; schools opened 5 days a week. Mask required, social distancing enforced. Level 3 - Medium level of new cases; Schools open 2 days a week rotation of which grades go, maximum number of kids in classes, masks required, and social distancing enforced. Other 3 days are online or pamphlets. Level 4 - High levels of new cases; schools closed online only. I have 3 daughters that go too two different school districts and both have different ratings so two kids are going 2 days while one is going 5 days. This plan is based off the evidence and supported by the medical professionals and is acceptable to me. Also Ohio has a republican governor if you were wondering. Now I think he was arguing from the perspective of a resident of Florida and if I was a resident their I would share his opinion. He didn't mention anything about how Trump can't force schools to open and didn't mention he threatened to withhold funding; which most definitely will be targeted at Democrat governors not Republican governors that keep schools closed. Also in his argument he implied that all Republican governors were like the Florida governor; which they aren't. He typically argues from a Democratic's perspective, so he tends to glance over these details. I'm an Independent but do tend to side with Democrats but I not always. To sum it up I think he's about 90% on point. 😊
This planet is getting really crowded. Maybe the down vote came from someone who thinks the only good human is a dead human. We will destroy as much of the biosphere as we can for as long as we can. Wife's a teacher in west Michigan, and they are still trying to move forward with plans to reopen. Let's just say they don't know what they are doing. She's scared of getting sick and dying, then she would bring it home to me and I could spread it at my work. See how it snowballs.
Hi Beau, it's Hunter again. I just watched this and am wondering, since everyone is home anyway, why the school districts or whoever, can't publish their required curriculum, list which books they prefer to have used, and simply allow the kids to test online. This would allow us to homeschool, and because of the individual attention, possibly even give our kids an advantage. OK, granted, they miss the important things like having their self-esteem smashed, being bullied and those LOVELY school lunches (remember mystery meat?). Now, it would require real parenting, but I think we can manage, and if we fail, well, at least we'll still have kids. It's more than a thought.
That...! ...description is a must for each parent, teacher, principal, student and school administrator to listen to before they open the schools. Thank you!
High school student here. Love how the government wants to cage me in a 6x6x6 box when we're already caged in a much more comfortable space. I'm staying home, regardless of what my school does.

Betsy DeVos, we have a few questions for you: • If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? We are choosing to put our teachers in danger. We're not paying them more. We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger.
I disagree. I homeschooled my son in my workshop for 6 years. We also were concerned about stunted social development. It did not happen. He was instantly popular when he went to a public school.
My point and Beau’s point is that socialization is one of the big reasons that people are saying kids need to go back. The way things are going to be, they won’t be able to socialize the way they use to; thus negating that reasoning.

Sorry, I had a follow up thought. I can't believe, as a grad student studying to become a Social Studies teacher, I am telling parents to homeschool at all costs.

The big argument I've been seeing more and more lately about schools is, "if they don't reopen we shouldn't pay teachers." Which is both stupid and terrifying.

"I don't know that I want my children socialized in that manner."
EXCELLENT POINT BEAU!
Me either.

For my classroom teaching, I did get a lot accomplished with my class last spring, but honestly, I think that I need to completely reorganize the way it is taught online. That's not something aCZcams video can impart.
This is why we need teachers to stay in the profession as long a possible. We need mentors who can bounce off ideas with less experienced teachers. Great topic thanks Beau!
My question is "How many students are we willing to lose?"
We should not be willing to lose any.
The conservatives have long been the right to life party. Except after somebody has been born.

Thank you! I am a teacher and I have been nervous.

Thank you so much for speaking up for teachers!! I am one and am scared to death to go back here in sunny Arizona.
A talking point should be the fact that administration is having meetings about school opening through Zoom. If it is so safe then why aren’t they meeting face-to-face?
Where will the governor's children be attending school?
I know people who argue that other countries are opening, we should too, cause America! It's funny to see people claim to the idea of American greatness, exceptionalism while supporting ideas and practices that prove to contribute to the opposite.
First you have to close to be able to reopen, US as a whole never closed, which is why they never got the pandemic under control
@@BigBadLoneWolf
And why we're not banned from other countries.
American "exceptionalism" is starting to get stronger that ever, just in the exact opposite direction
Trump promised ya that you'd get tired of winning though. That's exceptionalism .
You guys are exceptional all-right
I'm a 65 year old teacher in Sweden and I'm telling you...don't do it! I am not looking forward to August 10th, that's when we start up again.
Your kids are going to have a great homeschool teacher in you...I'm hoping I can provide the best learning experience for my children (middleschool & HS) ... a challenge I except whole heartedly. Staying strong and focused is what's going to see us through to the big picture.
Finland?
Once again,Beau, thank you for being the voice of reason.
Beau is the oxygen I need to breathe! Lmao okay that’s a little dramatic 😂 but I can’t help
myself. 😭 THANK YOU BEAU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

John Smith you’re sad.
Exactly how many teachers are we willing to put into the ground.
Chilling. True. Chilling
Thank you, I hope people wise up. It's not a hoax! I work in healthcare in Florida as a medical coder and I'm seeing it everyday! I read the hospital charts, it's heartbreaking. 😪
I retired after being a coder for over 30 years. Started just as ICD-9 was adopted and retired just before ICD-10. Whew! Most people don't even know the job exists let alone how much knowledge and expertise it takes to do it well. Do what you can to take care of your mental well being.
@@suebee4843 I'm retired from coding too. I worked with cancer and transplant patients trying to help them find funding for their medical care as well as doing the billing and coding. I can't even imagine trying to steer patients through Covid. Stay strong, America is praying for all of you!

bless all those teachers and their families, I saw in AZ the Phoenix mayor was asking for refrigerated trucks and not for holding ice cream !!!!!!!
Thanks for speaking up for us teachers. We dedicate our lives and careers to educating and caring for children and teens. It's nice to know that people are thinking about our safety too as we make plans to start the new school year.
Yoooo! Love your take on things man. Keep up the good work
I am so sorry. It is awful. Hugs
My thoughts are with all. { Love the t-shirt} Keep your kids safe.
This is what I ask for every time any organization wants to "reopen". Tell me ahead of time exactly how many people have to get infected for you to give up on the idea.
How many CHILDREN are we going to put in the ground before it stops? I say, ONE is too many!
My heart is breaking for the kids I know will pass from this. I thought above all we make the decisions we make and vote the way we vote for our children. Now they are expendable? *sigh*
I AGREE!! One child lost, is one too many! We should be smarter than this, but unfortunately we are severely lacking in REAL leadership, and those who are desperately trying to provide it, are being mocked, and labeled as radical and idealistic.
Thoughts and prayers
The sad part is that Trump and DeVos would say any number's just fine, because they don't see those children as people. >:(

My 63 year old ex-wife teaches third grade, my 30 yearly daughter teaches AP Calculus, my 31 year old son-in-law teaches third grade, and 23 year old daughter is a college student. My mind just exploded the way you described the children in school. Inmates, wow.
There is so much to know about SARS-CoV-2 that goes beyond transmission. It's the long term effect on affected children that terrifies me.
Spot on, Beau. Thank you for your voice of reason and compassion.
It's all about appearance. It's fondant on a manure pile.
And the states that go along with Trump's deathwish will promptly go blue in the next election .. the bodies will be piling up months before then. All so their governors didn't have to risk being on the receiving end of a nasty tweet or two.
Its Trump he perfected fondant on the manure pile. Somehow he finally found a way to sell it nationwide. Worlds greatest conman I will give him that

I've a lot of teachers for clients here in Florida, five in the last week, ranging from 28 to 63, have resigned or retired over this. Can't force teachers to work. There's a lack of them anyway, let's see how many want to go into the profession now.
I just read that DeSantis wouldn't let the Mayor of Hialeah into his covid 19 meeting today. Wth? Hialeah is a huge city.
Cuz Hialeah is one of the cities with high contamination of COVID
Wow, could Desantis actually be concerned with his own health safety?!?!?
OMG, Beau, that was wonderful!👍
I'm not a parent, and I'm definitely no kid (60 and retired). But kids happy to see their friends will lose themselves and their teachers will constantly be on guard.
It DOES sound like a prison.
Beau is Florida Man's arch nemesis! Literally thought only crazy people came out of Florida 😂 keep up the informed speeches. You're on point 90% of the time.
Hey Rick. I have been watching Beau's videos for a long time. Maybe I don't know what 'on point' means. I have never heard him say anything I disapproved of. My priorities are different but that doesn't make his words less true. I am curious what you mean. What is off point? I don't even know if off point is the opposite of on point.
Now where I disagree:
I live in Ohio one of the first states to shut down and still hasn't opened everything up yet. Tho the governor has released a plan to open schools based on health of the county and current increase of covid-19 cases. To give a break down it goes like this...
Level 1 - No new cases; schools fully opened 5 days a week. Masks required
Level 2 - Low level of new cases; schools opened 5 days a week.
@@kathryncasey4114 On point just means he was "On target", "Correct" with his opinion. At least to me and in the context I used that saying.
Powerful piece!
To the one down voter, are you in the funeral business?
This planet is getting really crowded. Maybe the down vote came from someone who thinks the only good human is a dead human. We will destroy as much of the biosphere as we can for as long as we can. Then we will all be good. I touch the like button on every Beau video. Someday he might something I don't like. Maybe not.
John Smith Never said that, opening up early increases the odds
Amen Brother! You speaketh the TRUTH!

Betsy DeVos, we have a few questions for you:
• If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks?
We are choosing to put our teachers in danger.
We're not paying them more.
We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger.
I've just started watching your videos and you are 100% spot on. Thank you for speaking out.
GREAT POINT about the socialization. With all of the rules, they can’t really socialize .
Thanks Brother for what you are doing.
