How I added an Upgrade system that players actually want | Devlog #8

- I've been working on my dream game where you run your medieval tavern, selling drinks, hiring staff, and having fun. I've been asked, (threatened) by you guys to allow the player to spend the profits they make on upgrading their tavern, from buying additional tables and storage to decorating their tavern with banners and lighting.

Criminally underrated game dev channel. Awesome work!
Thanks so much man, it means a lot!
What if you made a mail man who comes by and gives you news on your taverns ratings the kingdoms state and coming up events?
Hadn't ever heard that before, but its a great idea! I like it
A way to let the colours influence the game a bit more is through they having actual meaning. Maybe the red one is from an empire and the blue one from a coast port city, so you could add people from different places (if you place the tavern at, say, at an intersection/border between the factions).
When a person from X faction sees their flag on display, they'd be more joyful and waste more money. But, if they see a rival faction's, they could drink less or cause a scene and leave. Up to you with different reactions, but I think you could expand the game and lore simultaneously with this system. You can even do festive days like "Empire Foundation Day" where you cater to them on that day, etc, etc
Lots of great ideas, I would like to give them some meaning, thanks so much 🙏
Idea: There are "Events" that can happen randomly with some warning. Perhaps they have to be accepted? The events will bring different kinds of guests into your Tavern. Make it so different interior styles have different effects on guests. Allow the staff to change the interior decorations from one to another if you assign it to them as a task. Your Tavern could have "events" where certain guests get mood buffs for complimenting interior decor.
Bonus idea: Sometimes there are BAD guests, and you want them to leave ASAP, but not catering to them causes them to break stuff. HOWEVER putting up certain decor makes them want to get out faster, as they dislike the atmosphere,
Hmm, too many soldiers so you switch the flags on the walls to some other faction, would be interesting. Thanks as always man
“Babe wake up. TJ posted another banger video.”
Haha thanks
Loved the dark existential crisis moment, do more please 🙏
Lmao noooo I’m trying to avoid those
Great stuff! Your game looks more promising with every devlog!
Cheers
Thanks Floky! Glad youre enjoying it.
Looking great! Have you thought about exterior? Like tables outside that may have a view of a dwarf mountain, elven forest, human village. Or a road where you pick up orders/delivery’s etc
that’s an amazing idea!!
Was trying to avoid doin an outside as it would increase objects and might lead to lag, but it’s being requested a lot so I’ll have to come up with a good solution
@@TJGameDev yeah I get that, as a games art student it’s a pain to try and balance lag and quality. Another idea that came to mind was a tavern band, like dwarf drums, elf flutes and harp, human lute/guitar.
@@george5408 man that is brilliant! I immediately thought of Zoltan's tavern in the Witcher 3.
This must be in the game! It's going to bring so much life.
Great point on the baked shadow vs using lights probes, it was actually something I was looking into already, and seeing it in action here, really helped sell me on using them! (I wasn't really thinking about lighting in-depth yet, and this helped kick me into action on it lol)
Hey I’m glad you could take away something from the video! I know not all my subs care about that kind of stuff but I like to include it anyway for the few that do
Maybe different decoration colors attract different customers? (e.g. Elves like green, Dwarfs like yellow...). Thanks for the nice vid as always!
The UI looks good maneeee. I'm a fan. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man
Lookin great! Remember don't over work yourself. Get in good sleep & take care of yourself otherwise you won't have fun. Game looks like it will turn out to be a gem, I'm already thinking about a future where my friends would completely sabotage the tavern.
Haha thank you for the concern! I’m pretty happy with my current work load but I’ll make sure I get enough sleep
Can't wait to see the final build you added so much and much can be added in the future.
Thanks dude, glad you’re looking forward to it
Putting attributes on decoration, yes definitively, but you should also use the colors as an opportunity to increase the luck of certain type of people to come into the tavern. You could also make missions like bring a squad of soldiers, that are more attracted to red for example.
Nice improvement so far, keep going 💪🤩
Yeah that’s interesting, I need to find a balance between gameplay features and customization
Maybe make it so you have to buy newer bigger taverns as you progress through the game, so at a certain point you save up enough money to turn your rinky dink shack into a moderately sized tavern and eventually into a really big one. Also i think that maybe you should add rooms for the npcs to sleep in. So this would expand the amount of possibility and things to do in the game besides the restaurant side of things as i think taverns are usually a combo between a place to eat and a place to sleep. Great game and devlogs and i hope things continue to go well!
Great idea. I think a small starter tavern might be good for people to learn the mechanics, then they can upgrade to the current one, then maybe a bigger one
Really love your Devlogs. Looking forward to the next :)
Thanks man!
Look's good mate! We are waiting!
Thanks Bengu!
I never play games like this but I can't wait for it! Love seeing the progress!
Thanks man! Glad you’re excited!
Hey dude just found your channel because I wanted to try and learn unity and man I dig the content a lot. Thanks for all the videos!
Thanks so much man, glad you’re enjoying them
when your phrase: "and Red for BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOOD" is a refrence to technoblade, you are instantly 10 times cooler,
anyway keep up the great work, your game seems amasing
Thanks man, I have to admit I never watched techno but he clearly was such a great guy to leave an impression on so many. I’ve been watching Etho for the past decade if you’re a fan of OG minecraft CZcamsrs
Can't wait to play your game. Feels like a game I would make myself if I could :)
Suggestion: Since you are redoing lighting anyway it would be great to be able to place everything where player wants. If not everything (like bar and rooms) then at least the tables, flags, candles, etc. Gives you a sensation of creation. When tables just pop up in set places as u upgrade it does not feel fun at all :/
Modular tables would be cool too. (where u put 2 next to each other and they turn into one big table)
Also, colours and shields is great but Tables, Chairs and Benches would be the first thing I would upgrade if I had a tavern. (maybe rough wood first, then more appealing looking wood, then with some metal pieces and eventually with some skin or cloth even) I would say, the same could apply to the floor and walls.
Best of luck
Yeah, its a good Idea so Ill have to think about it. I need to redo the AI's pathfinding if I want to do a grid. If I get that resolved Id like to do the grid for placement
Awesome stuff, this has been A great devlog to follow!
Thanks man!
I love the way the tavern is looking!
Thanks man!
Paintings
Sculptures (wood - stone - glass - diamond)
Instruments - Weapons - Shields - Magical Items (orbs)
Pets (Canaries - Parrots - Cats - Dogs - Fish)
Different entrances (Teleportation rune, underground entry for dwarves etc.) which increases visits from special characters that give you more money / scores.
Great ideas. Statues absolutely
Definitely a nice vibe with the new UI, nice transition animations 🦾
Thanks man 💪
This game actually looks so fun, the customization looks so good too
Thanks man!
Breakable mugs, bowls and chairs. the player would have to spend money on new inventory to keep running the tavern. plus a lot more chores by picking debris up and getting new chairs from storrage. (maybe a "balance" minigame where the players has to walk with multiple mugs for a table and has the chance of spilling and breaking mugs)
Never thought of the balance game, I like the idea though so I’ll try to add it thank you!
Very nice progress! Keep it up!
Thanks man!
I love how the new UI looks, its blends prefectly with the game
Awesome! I’m glad other people like it as well
great devlog. more videos would be great since I already forgot who you were and which game you were working on
dude, you're hilarious AND informative. I love your videos
Thank you!
Great video brother.. keep improving
Thanks!
For the maintenance role, I was thinking maybe make keeping the fire going over time in the fireplace as another reputation perk. Being in a cold tavern is likely not as fun for the npcs. You could have a simple log storage bin on one side of the tavern.
This is a great idea thanks!
"Blood for the blood god"
I saw that Technoblade tribute, nice!
o7
Great stuff! One of the upgrades I can think of is fireplace for cold times and windows for hot times. Also this can add more chores, like keep the fire running, removing ashes, opening closing windows, etc. And for the chores would be cool to clean up spilled beers, and maybe wipe up tables. But this may add too much chores, also you probably can do waitresses for hire to do stuff for you. And also serve drinks and food. Maybe even hire cook. This may be good for endgame stuff, but need to think how exactly endgame will look for the player. Keep it going man! Cheers!
Thanks man! Glad your enjoying these. Someone else mentioned the fireplace chore so I’m glad there’s a lot of interest in it
God that gym looks so cool
I love it so much
game is looking amazing
Thanks man!
Looking great!!
Thanks Nathan!
Colors of your upgrades may influence type of guests visiting your tavern.
For example sorcerers might like blue and barbarians might like red.
Having all red will prevent some guest from visiting your place or may cause bad mood or something.
interesting ideas, Ill have to consider it!
I love synty assets
Using the gym as inspiration, very cool
Thanks bro
Awesome video and well explained 👍👍 Also that gym looks so fucking cool wtf, would trail everyday just to see it 😔✊
I'm glad some people still respect cyperpunk to some degree because the game really had a lot going for it despite the flaws and restraints investors put on it. Great video overall though.
Thanks man!
I love the sideways walking animations at 7:23 lolol
Haha thanks Milas, unfortunately I plan on fixing it
GOBLIN!!
subscribed once I heard you talk about Walmart peanut butter :) you're an inspiration
Haha thanks man!
You could have the customers behave more like real people by introducing market dynamics, for example by letting the player choose the prices for the items.
then how much the customers spend and what type of customers come in would depend on the visuals of the bar and the prices.
for example maybe you can upgrade your bar to look very luxurious, this would attract more wealthy clients who don't mind spending more.
simultaneously by changing the price you could influence how much clients buy, simple supply and demand action.
In my opinion having these more detailed modelling of clients' behavior is crucial to having depth to the game.
great ideas, I think my goal right now is to get most of the systems started, then expand on them more as I go. I like the price setting idea, I should definitely add it
I hope you can add some fun to the decor, like why not have pirate or bandit themed decorations, and each items give positive and negative buffs to your tavern's stats besides "appeal". Maybe a magic related item boosts the speed of your staff, or makes stuff taste better or worse?
Hadn’t thought of that, thanks!
i suggest that in the endgame you have the ability to franchise the tavern and you need to manage the different stores to ensure the quality.
I had sent thought of that but it’s super interesting, thank you!
Dive in!!
Very cool!
Thanks man, glad youre still enjoying it!
The color upgrades may work better if the visual points could be upgraded from within one color with the different objects. For example, the blue shield is worth one point, the blue banner is for two points, and the blue tables are worth three points. The same goes for all colors, so the player can select which one it wants to upgrade to get the max points. not sure if that explanation makes any sense lol
👀 hmm what if you could display whatever you wanted but still get the points of your highest upgrade
@@TJGameDev Yeah, that's a good idea!
A thing that you could add to ypur game is when diferent classes like a noble or something go to your tavern, you have to bring them a diferent mug of the other, something ornamented because they won't like it if it's the same mug as the others, or could be other thing too, it will add more realism in sone way i think.
oh that sounds cool, thanks
The game looks amazing, great update, is there any chance for you to release the tool you used to make icons, I'm sure lots of people who can't draw would love it, I'm people.
It’s pretty hacked together and not super intuitive haha. But if you add me on discord (link above) I’ll dm you the script.
@@TJGameDev thank you man that would very cool, I'm a programmer learning unity and I was already working on my own icon generation script when I saw your notification and watched the video it was like godsend, anyway I'll ask you on discord thank you again.
Maybe you could specialize your tavern so you buy beer that certain customers like and certain decorations attract that kind of customers. like you sell wine and have lots of fancy chairs which elves like idk
Had that idea for drinks but hadn’t thought of furniture. I like it thanks
Cyber chase is mvp of kids shows
Absolutely
wow that was a really good devlog
now make more.
sir yes sir!
I would like if you could change the color and material of floor and walls, it would make the game more customizable.
Would be cool if there were some rare npc that would give you some decorations or other stuff.
Hmm yeah good thought. Painting the walls would be cool
I like how you handled the upgrades. Alternatively, you could have added textures for ragged, worn out, stained, clean but used, and new. Then have those textures fade in and out of the models as the tablecloths are used. Maybe just start out with ragged banners.
It would also be fun for soldier NPC's to react to different color schemes in the bar. Hell keeping everything cheap but trying to balance the crowd in your bar would be a fun mini game. Give different decorations values to what kind of customer it attracts and drives away.
Hmm I like it. Now that the system is there, adding more flags is easy enough.
@@TJGameDev I'm consistently impressed by your ability to not let feature creep run away with you.
Suggestion let us be able to move the positions of the decorations in the scene for more customisation please :)
Hmm maybe, I’d have to figure out how to do that but it might be possible
Oh my god. I had open my third eye. Since this is fantasy there could be a helper golom, bodyguard golom and magician who you could pay for safety and helping around. And there already people talking how to fix this and that so a magician. A student. Since no magician who will take the job of a shabby tavern so a student of magician is a rare opportunity to get them work but they would like a lot of gold and they're more likely to make mistake (and older magician but can have a crazy amount to work for but lower a lot for mistake) to work for so I think this could be like a endgame of tavern where you had a lot of gold and stuff or taking a huge risk but high rewards.
(Also this is depending on what you think magician is but I think mine of what is magician so...)
Thanks greenstar, I really like the golem idea, not too sure how much magic o want to add but the magician sounds good too!
@@TJGameDev Sure! I will always give idea whenever I think of!
Did you thought about adding any type of farming , and with those cultives be able to cook the foood for the tavern
Probably no big farm but maybe some small garden for stuff
Idk what you're talking about, the Bitch Skirt goes hard 😩✊
Nooooo I want to look like an assassin not an e-girl 😭
Good
Thanks
CyberChase was a *banger.*
100%!
You should make the ascetic stuff cost a different currency then the utility stuff so players don't feel like their missing out by customizing their tavern
Hi TJ maybe you can make your regulars go on quests so you can unlock more stuff for the interior and unlock different beverages and fruit.
Hadn’t thought of a questing system, might be a lot of work but I’ll consider it
@@TJGameDev thank you.
Bro, it may be a far fetched idea, but do you know the tavern from Seven Deadly Sins? (If you didn't, it moves on a giant green pig, could be an interesting concept which could progress into a story )
Never heard of it but looking at it now, its so cute! Ill have to come up with something
2:57 sometimes I feel the same way man…
We all do man, just keep grinding
Maybe make unique bonuses for different decoration
Hmm yeah I like that
I don't want to ask too much but a multiplayer would be awesome.
It is a lot lol, but currently working on it 🙂
@@TJGameDev Oh my b. But I'm excited for the game!!
if threatning work on ya then..... you better make a jester Ai for the guests,or else.....ok? lol🤣😅👀
welll just saw the end anddddddd nevermind thanks 😅
Haha eventually it’ll be added
@@TJGameDev ok take your time
I really thought he is making a harry potter fan-game by the picture of the video💀
Lmao no but I might add a little magic 😉
Hey man, really loving this series! By the way, are you interested in work (paid of course)? I’ve got a project you may be interested in
I’m a little too busy at the moment with work and this game but dm me on discord, maybe one day in the future
As empty as a Reddit moderators life. I'm dying!
Is this going to be in VR?
Ive got a headset so I will try, not sure its optimized enough but we will see
@@TJGameDev Looks great so far even without VR! Excited to follow! 😁
Hitting slightly too close to home this episode lmao. Just payed rent and also used to feel smart
I'm glad to know its not just me
I wouldnt go with colours as the tiers, this limits player customization. I would go with Shields
Yeah I might do both, like you unlock one type at a time but you can buy the colors to upgrade them
Make a farm where u get ur recources from
for the algo
Thanks!
Nice job! Very cool idea but i think this very popular assets pack can kill you game
Maybe, but once it’s close to done I can always get switch them out
What about a too much drunk guy doing somes troubles ? :)
Truuuue
How about u had security guards or bouncers were they would kick out people if they were too drunk and become hostile and you'd pay the security guards
Man drop your biceps exercices pls
Hammer curls, ez bar curls. Maybe some incline. More important is to hit your triceps as they make up 2/3 of your arm
@@TJGameDev thx dude
Make a shotgun for a safe bar:)
Lmao this is so dumb for an old medieval tavern but I really want to add it now
please add voice chat
Thanks, I know steam supports it
@@TJGameDev thx
What about Deep Rock Galactic?
What about it?
Mice
Sure
This looks promising. but the problem the game potential is limited. you just serve people and upgrade. It would be boring and the players might loose interest. You just need to upgrade gameplay.
Yeah absolutely, I need to add more activities for the player
Bro Dont Animate your UI its expensive on pc's instead Tween them
I have heard a lot about tween, I think you’re right I gotta learn it
This game is awesome can i pirate it 🤣🤣
Just kidding
Nope impossible to pirate cause it isn’t out yet lol
@@TJGameDev that's unfortune and i had high hopes
Add female traverns, don't be so sexist jeez
Haha it’s in the next video lol
@@TJGameDev lol can't wait
it's okay hun you're a chad who watched cyberchase
Thanks fellow chad ;)
over here me out… it would be so cool if some NPCs would tell you or you’d over hear randomly generated adventures they went on so they’d be telling their own story (by over hear i mean see a text box above their head) or like elves and dwarves would argue stuff like that just more life but i love the progress amazing work!
I like the argument idea, I’ll see if I can come up with something
