- A devlog about a huge problem my indie game has - turns out game dev is difficult!
Indie game dev is difficult, it's problem after problem, and in this devlog I share with you my latest major problem I had with my difficult pixel art platformer! You'll find out what that huge problem with my indie game is, and how I overcome it. I talk about story and gameplay motivation, resolution and identity, as well as show some other areas of my game development such as level design done in Godot engine, or character animations done in Aseprite!
I start with describing the problem, and then taking you through how I solved it.

you should definitely use this cut-out art style in a future game it looks good
That would be super interesting!!!! Good suggestion
Wanted to write the same and add: Continue including these in your videos. It's a great USP which I haven't seen by any other dev on CZcams
would definitely make an awsome cutscene
@@saultoons i subbed for this reason 😅
Two words: paper, mario
+1
Wow, I can imagine how difficult it would be to let go of Lumbah for the game idea, but the Plantfall concept is super exciting and intriguing for fulfilling that pairing of story and gameplay! Nice to know that Lumbah can live on in another form - really enjoyed the stop-motion drawings in this! ✌😊✨
Brandon!!! Yeah it was so difficult and scary, especially since I've built it up on this channel for a while now, I've never had to face what other people might think of a big change before so definitely felt some added pressure there 😅 But I've gotta trust that gut feeling I think for sure. Thanks a lot, it was a nice change to make some art away from the screen, I was inspired a lot by your shadowbox to try traditional again and I'm glad I did. Keep killing it and thanks for watching 🥰
@@saultoons Haha totally understandable! I've enjoyed the adventures of Lumbah, but it's also exciting to see you problem-solve around those greater issues - and knowing that you're making something that YOU are more excited about is always more exciting to watch as a viewer! Oh nice, yeah making that shadowbox was quite a departure for me too - but also fun to do something tangible! I gotta make one of your top-down camera rigs now - filming all that can be tough otherwise! 😅
Damn, you are so good at storytelling.
Can't wait to see more of this series and of course the actual game.
Yooo thanks so much I’ve been actively trying to improve at storytelling actually so I appreciate your comment!!!! ❤️
I didn't give a crap about the princess when I played super Mario bros... it was just to beat the level and get to the next one and then finally it was to beat the game that was all... the story didn't matter the game was a good time .. frustrating mostly but still
I honestly don’t care what the new flower guys name is. He will forever be known as potty in my heart. Such a nice fellow
Potty is so cute haha thanks for sharing
that's the first thing came to my mind, I vote for "Potty" for the name! lol
¡𝗽otty 𝗴reat 𝗻ame! 😆👏
Oh my God I also thought "Potty" the moment I saw him. It's meant to be.
Call the tutorial level "Potty training"
A brave and wise decision! Though I grew attached to Lumbah, I too think this is for the best. Our favourite dwarf deserves a game that matches him well, and the flower guy seems lovable enough. Plus, the new motivation is great!
Also, I love the cut out style, it's so quirky and fun to watch, I encourage you to do more videos in the same style
Yeah I also grew attached to Lumbah and can't wait to see that story in it's full glory as well, but at the right time, in the right medium I think :D
Thanks for the love, the cut out style was super fun actually!!! :D
I have to say, this channel is very unpredictable but I never expected to see a whole segment of wood woodworking
All jokes aside I'm really looking forward to this game. It looks very wholesome and mysterious at the same time. I love the style of the game and the gameplay looks incredible. I just joined this channel a couple days ago and I love everything that you have done so far. I'm planning on making a game myself and you have been a huge inspiration to me. Good luck with your game and I hope to be with this channel for a long time.
hahaha yeah it is very unpredictable eh, I never know what I'm going to work on next :'D I just try to have fun with it and upload videos that I enjoy working on hehe. Now that I'm pro wood worker (lol) I can have even more fun :'D
Best of luck with your game!!! Do keep me updated, I love to hear about new game projects :D
Exciting! I havent kept up with your earlier videos but I think going with a new direction that just " makes sense " is a much better instinct than the " sunk cost " fallacy of sort of keeping the old planning just because you put time and effort into it. The new character is adorable. It'd be satisfying to see new plants and stuff grow in these desolate places as you move through them. like nature reclaiming the land.
Sunk cost fallacy, yes that's exactly it! Yes, that's the idea, the plant will be spreading nature and regrowing the earth! Have shown some of this on stream but will reveal more about how that will work in a future devlog :)
Aww great to see why your game has changed! I love the little plant character, and the animations you did really make it feel alive! Can't wait to see more devlogs!
Thanks so much Jackie :D
Paper animation looks awesome! I believe you should trust your guts and keep going with this new idea. It is actually admirable that you decided to put your beloved son aside. Let's see this through the end!
What about calling it Sunny or Sol(sun in spanish).
I thought the same name, Sunny!
It will be a good name!
Thanks so much Reddmar, let's do this!!!!! :D
+ I also came up with Sunny because he looks like sunflower and he is like the sun for this underworld
@@ksanag3426 Exactly same thought i had!
Motivation is always the toughest part. Keeping it fresh and seeing progress really helps to want to develop further. Can't wait to see what happens next. Also I think the plant should be called "Sonny" (the sunflower)
Yeah it can be difficult but now I'm more hyped than ever, everything seems to be fitting nicely into place, can't wait to share more in future devlogs
@@saultoons can’t wait to see them! Love your content
I'm really glad that your ideas could come to consensus and let you do something that is best for the game!
As for the name for the character the only one I can think of is 'Potty'
Potty is so cute :'D Thanks Pucci, yeah it was a difficult decision but I now feel a lot better about the future of the game and Lumbah!!
I love your art style
Thanks for the love Sergio
This art style is really cool! You should use for some cutscenes, or even for an entirely new game!
Thanks Modley, yeah I definitely want to draw more like this :D
So, had some ideas about lumbah jump,
There are two possible motives that I came up with that I like
- the wizard is bringing trees and plants to life and they are wreaking havoc, the lumbah is not going for his help, but to stop him, whether the wizard knows the damage he’s causing or not
- the dragon is burning down the forest, and the wizard is the only one who can stop it,
Uses for the axe :
- add one other control to swing the axe, allowing the lumbahjack to stick it into the ground or wall, creating a small platform, or giving yourself a way to stop him from walking for a couple seconds (like, it gets stuck and he pulls it out, or if it’s in a wall, he hangs off of it for a while before it falls out or you jump again) this could help with timing puzzles and whatnot. Unless you’re purely going for a Jumpking style rage game
If you added enemies, you wouldn’t even necessarily need to put it on the player to attack them, you could make him automatically hit them unless his axe is acting as a platform
Why doesn’t he stop running :
A : the forest is on fire
B : wizard curse
C : ‘enemies’ chasing him
These are amazing ideas DangerDurians! Though i'm set on keeping the game very simple for the sake of finishing it. I could definitely see a more Lumbah based action platformer game in the future perhaps!!! It's clear you've put a lot of thought into this, i'm glad the story resonates with you
I love the style of this video! Great work pulling it together and sharing your thought process so well. I’m excited to see where both of these darlings end up!
Thanks so much Ryan :D
Big respect that you changed your whole story. I wish i were so good in art like you. xD I will start making some Art for my litle Topdown-shooter, so i will maybe need to watch some tutorials from you. But im mostly scared from the map maiking and the animations. Until now, I alway had minimal animations int the game and they werent even good looking.
I wish you Luck on your Game ! :)
It was such a difficult decision, I was stuck on this for a while, but I'm glad it seems to be working out so far. Ooo a top-down shooter, I love those!!! You've got this, the sooner you get started with it the quicker you can overcome those challenges and improve, keep it up!!!
Hey Saul, love the new video and the cartoons you made for explaining the game dev (Saul's brain is fun :D). All game designers/developers transmute their ideas from past prototypes/concepts to final work by having the right enthusiasm, when it clicks to their own passion. Love that you have a new character and will continue making the game. The dwarf has been a good scaffolding for structuring the game. Thanks for taking the time to develop the story telling and inspiring people to make games ! Also congrats on almost 95k subs !
Hey Skull!! Yeah I think I'll get there in the end, development continues on and is getting stronger and stronger, can't wait to share more in future videos
This is the such a good video. I think it’s the best devlog I have seen, very educational and great story telling too!!!
Wow, thank you! I appreciate your kind words Milan, thanks for watching :D
Good work killing your darlings and hope the new direction goes well.
My name proposal is 'sunflower' as homage to the singing flower in plants vs zombies 1.
For lumbah you could have made it so that the protag is a bit of an anti-hero who climbs to release the dragon wizard/prince who will stop the dragon from rampaging again so he can live quietly ever after. They're not interested in saving the world so they grumble the whole way up (fits the dwarfish theme imo).
Anyway, good work and looking forwards to seeing how you go!
Thanks Griffork, and nice suggestion, that does fit the dwarfish theme! More to come soon :)
I just wanna say your ART, Animatione, stories games are amazing DUDE! You really inspire me and a lot of other people around the whole world! Keep doing what you're doing because you really ARE, very good at it!
Thanks for all the kind words Chitus
Great to see how you've identified the problem and pivoted your plans for that. Good luck!
Thanks Skeffles, it was a difficult decision to make but I'm happy with the direction now :D
Wow love the change but I also cannot wait to see what you come up with for Lumber! Both look incredible so far!
Thanks David, I can't wait to make more!
that art style you did for the stop motion animations was really cool. you need to make a game with that art style. kind of like paper mario?
Yeah it's cool eh, takes a long time to make so I think making a game in that style would take a very long time, perhaps in the future something I will try :D
your content is still as enjoyable as ever
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Thanks so much for watching
Love the video! Been watching your streams on twitch while i do my digital art, have to say it's entertaining and helpful that you gave some art tips. Can't wait to play your game!
DOPE! Thanks for hanging out on the streams
Love the stop motion and your art!!! :D great explication of how you solved all of these problems! Will miss Lumbah as he's a cool character but looking forward to seeing him in another game or even comic or animation!!! :)
Thanks so much Samantha! It was super fun to make the art like this, and I will miss Lumbah too, but not to worry, we'll definitely see more in the future :D
This is such a great idea. I cant wait to see more about these two new concepts :))
Thanks Chris, more coming soon! :D
Wow! This video is so good. Damn!
The "Kill Your Darlings" moment was very sad, but maybe it will be better for the future of your game! I hope I can play it soon!
And for a name, maybe "Sunny" is a good name, because it can bring light to this dark world!
Thanks so much TeJota, Yeah I think it doesn't have to be that dramatic because I can reuse or use in something else
youtube recommended me this video and i can tell that you’re talented, will be checking out more of your stuff
Thanks for sticking around and thanks CZcams for recommending my stuff 😁🥰
Love the new idea. I really like the new game environment. Looking forward to seeing more updates about it! Goodluck!
The cut out animation is very nice (I am not sure if that's the right term). And Flora would be a good name for the flower!
Also it could be that Lumbah asks the wizard to help him fight the dragon and then he (Lumbah) gets teleported into the Dragon's lair.
Thanks for the kind words Tamim I appreciate you taking the time to leave a supportive comment
Sounds like you got a solid plan and it looks really promising! I can't wait to see it my dude. Good luck!
Thanks Justin, more to come soon!
Your videos are just like What I eat in a day videos - you know you should try do the same cool stuff, you know you never will but it’s weirdly satisfying 😂
Thanks for the video! I am absolutely freaking out how cute the flower animation is!
hahah I always try to have fun with my videos, I'm just a noob as well so if I can do it anyone can :D Thanks for the love, I'm glad you like the lil flower character :D
Love this!!! It's scary to face the big issues in our projects but I feel like when you look at them fearlessly, it always pays off!
Yeah it certainly is Jared, the attachment you grow to a project can really get in the way of improvement sometimes as I've found out haha Thanks for watching
I know this video is about you struggling, but you still make it look so effortless. Great work.
hahaha thanks a lot Will, definitely struggling but glad I could present it in a nice way
Class mate can't wait to see where you take this
Cheers Stotty bro!!!!
u should definetly make lumbah as a playable character like an easter egg
Yeah I definitely will! :)
This is so good! I'm really excited for the game to release.
Thanks for the excitement and support 94Hunno :D
When I was watching your videos I found this Lumbah guy much more appealing and as for story. Lava and his design gave me instant thought of a digging dwarves who run away from lava/fire/monster they unleased. Game starts at very core of Earth/mountain/volcano and dwarf (or dwarves) are starting to run away (which explains constant movement). Other small idea of mine was to make it so you unlock other dwarves (just look difference) as you get higher (you can add conversation/story here too) and these different dwarves act like your lives/saves/checkpoints. You can also make it so if your X dwarf die, you lost X checkpoint (since you wanted to make it hardcore-ish). Well, that's quick idea I got just watching gameplay, lava and characters. Flower/sunflower doesn't strike me as good character for jumping but if you got good story and idea, go for it.
I am basically where you are in the beginning of this video.. just cut the main character, and relooking at relevance of everything.. mechanics, objectives.. even whats the point.. Cool video.. watching it after seeing some of the new devlogs
Just came across this
I think the plant character is super cute!!!
I think your qrt style is also very noce
Good job mate
Thanks a lot HSW!
This looks great! I also struggle trying to make a full game idea, although usually I never finish them
YOU CAN DO IT EBOATWRIGHT!!!!
@@saultoons >:O
Amazing dev log! The cut-out animations and narrative flow of your video was excellent. Could seriously be an amazing look for a game, but a Lumbah comic would be really neat, too!
Good on you for taking the dive to make your game work at the cost of "killing your darlings". Plantfall is already looking super cute!
He looks like a kind of Daisy called Coreopsis. So how about "Coreo"?
Thanks so much for the kind words!!! Coreo is a cute name :D
Excellent as ever; the papercraft animations worked out so well! I look forward to seeing where you take Plantfall. :)
Thanks Telaba!!!! Yeah It turned out ok eh? Gotta find some way to get more consistent lighting but its a start haha! Onwards and upwards, or down, if you're plantfalling!
Oh so that's where that came from on my wishlist, I could have sworn that had lumbah stuff in it. Good to know! I recognized the style and was confused what had happened.
hahaha sorry about that, it took me a while to get this video out I knew there would be some confusion in there hahah :D
Im super excited!! Def wanting to see more
MORE TO COME LETS GO! Thanks for the love Pit
Honestly... you decision makes sense! Excited to see how it all plays out!
Thanks Raxxie, I'm excited to get it done :'D
I realy liked the style of the video and the paper animation looks great :)
Thank you very much! I had a lot of fun trying something new and making those drawings
great video! I absolutely love the new game and i am so hyped for its release! :D
Thanks so much
I see unity dev videos in peace but when I see a develover using Godot i feel so happy and instantly click subscribe
Godot makes me happy :'D
I'm pretty sure that eventually Lumbah can get his own game, once you get some idea, that fits him, and that's pretty cool. It's not like you are limited to making just one game in your lifetime. I love the flower guy as well, he's cute. Oh, and a comic/animation is a brilliant idea, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for either.
Great Video! Love the paper cut out animations 🔥 🔥 🔥
Thanks bro!
that cut out stop motion is perfect
Thanks!
As for the story of the game you could say that he meets the wizard early in the game ,wizard helps him fight the dragon by making him strong like bull or something but the is catches that he always has to be moving like a power with a curse and then the entire story for the game is to try and beat up the dragon that burned your house
Not a bad idea Sam! Though I'm veering away from this now, more progress coming in the next devlog TOMORROW :D
Production went through the roof on this one!
WATERS IN THE BUILDING LETS GOOOOO!!!!
The plant wandering upwards is so genius: like u can make an intro where the last tip of sunshine touches the ground and revives the plant, after that the sun is fading upwards, in order to survive the plant has to chase the sun... Man I would make this a project and calling it "following the sun". However I don't want to do art/gameplay theft :3 love what you are doing
Thanks Kai! - Yeah I've got some nice ideas I can't wait to share more in future devlogs
Looks awesome, cutscenes with the cutout art would be cool!
Ooo nice idea!
Your art style is great!
Thanks Andrew
I love your art, dude.
Keep being awesome.
Thanks a lot :D
I clicked on this because the thumbnail was soo well done! I recognized it instantly.
I'm glad you liked it! Was a fun one to draw that's for sure :D
Amazing video, I can't even imagine the effort you put into this video. Great work. Subbed :)
Thanks Dennis! It took too long 🤣
Amazing video! Can't wait for Plantfall devlog!
Coming soon :D
Lumbah could easily be used as a resource collection upgrade type of game and the wizard is an upgrade you get, could even be a tower defence game that you need to collect resources to upgrade the defences against the dragon.
Cool ideas!
This works so much better for your game mechanics and I LOVE the new character.
Have to throw in my suggestion for a name: Phyll (pronounced like Phil) and a reference to Chlorophyll!
Can't wait to see the next dev log!
Great name suggestion! Thanks, can't wait to show more :)
Props on making such a hard decision. I know your game will be all the better for it. Hopefully Lumbah can live on in some other form.
Thanks Gareths, yeah it was difficult but for the best in the end I think!
Nice video. I can't hold my laugh about the fact that you've this game up on steam with those background graphics. lmao.
I'm also working on a game right now. I wish I'd be able to draw like this. It's so difficult to make some good looking sprites for me and holy, this is time consuming. Dang it.
Hahahaha yeah I was surprised it got accepted tbh but it worked?? 🤣 I will update it eventually when I have better screenshots lmao yeah art can be very time consuming but just gotta keep at it, like everything 😂 good luck with your game
About the characters name, maybe something to do with flowery names and their definition? For example Tansy means immortality, if youd like to not let the player die when falling down :)
Tansy is really cute and thoughtful idea Novae, thanks for the suggestion!
i think it would be kinda cool if somewhere, lumbah was in plantfall as a little easter egg! maybe as a background npc or a statue or something! also the new little plant character looks soooo cute
Definitely!!!! Thanks for the love Cloverlovania
@@saultoons no problem!! i'm sure ur gonna do great with this game
I'm sad to see Lumbah go, but I uunderstand. That doesn't mean he can't appear in a game later down the line, that's more fitting to the story you're trying to tell for him. The plant dude looks adorable, and the rough drafts of the levels looks very interesting.
I also want to add, the titles of your game don't have to have literal representations in game. Though, I guess if you wanted to sell the idea that Lumbah was a lumberjack, keeping his axe is the way to go. But you could have also had him use it in game. As a means of saving himself from falling once or twice in a level. Maybe even hop onto platforms if he's near one after saving himself from falling. You could also have him go to the "well known" wizard for a means of fighting the dragon. With the obvious weapon being his trusty axe.
Yeah it was a difficult decision to leave Lumbah out of this but I really do think it's for the best, the game has been progressing really well since then and I'm super excited to share the updates in the next devlog :) Thanks for your suggestions and taking the time to leave a comment
Nice video! It’s very interesting to see your creative process in game dev.
(PS name the little guy Anton/Anthony because it kinda sounds like “anthos” which is Greek for flower)
That's a cute name!! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment Geeky
Thanks for the inspiring story. Maybe Lumbah's axe could be in the lab as an Easter egg tribute to these origins?
Yeah I'll definitely be including some easter eggs in the game for Lumbah, thanks for the suggestion :D
as soon as i saw that cute plant sprite you made up i thought of "planty" for some reason lol
great video btw!
ahaha planty is super cute, thanks for watching hatoving :)
good choice with the plant being the game and lumbah the comic gg
GG ToTsker
I have an idea to further the lumbah story without losing any of the chapter beats:
The Wizard requires a number of mcguffins in order to cast a spell to bring you to the dragon's lair. To get these precious items, the wizard opens the Dragon Trials above him (supporting the vertical level design further) using a portal spell. You travel through the portals and up through the trials, dropping back down to the wizard after each item collected. After this, the wizard finally sends you to the Dragon's Keep.
As for motivation, maybe there was a prized possession in Lumbah's cabin that was destroyed in the fire.
Nice ideas Egg, something I'll keep in mind for Lumbah Story but I'm continuing with the plant for now, more progress in the next devlog TOMORROW :D
Killing your darlings is hard, but I’m sure you’ll find a new project for Lumbah. Congratulations on the pivot. Can’t wait to see where you take this game!
Thanks Aarimous :D
You can just use Lumbah as an easter egg or a boss in your new game.
Then later when you make him into his own game, people will already recognize him. You could even put the main character from this game as a cameo in the second game.
Also, since he looks like a Sun Flower, you should call him "Sunny".
Definitely will have Lumbah easter eggs!
@@saultoons I was thinking you could justify Lumbah running all the time without stopping by the fact that his pants are on fire and he has to get to the water to put himself out. Only the water is at the top of the map. LOL
You could call it "Pants on Fire" or something. Maybe he told a lie that made his house burn down and now he's gotta run to get the water.
Regarding the lumberjack and the wizard- You probably could have made an alternative narrative either without the dragon, where the evil wizard cursed the lumberjack to run constantly. But this new idea seems really cool, I look forward to seeing where you run with it!
Yeah it would have to be an alternative narrative and that’s just not something I want to do with the lumbah story, fun ideas though :) more devlogs soon!
I had assumed the wizard cursed him with the fact that he can't stop or maybe the power he gained of durability or whatever gave him so much energy he literally couldn't stand still?
Not a bad idea!
Man these hand drawn thumbnails look amazing
Thanks Juho! ❤️ I love drawing the thumbnails hehe
Super well done video!
Thank you very much Nathan!
Names for the plant:
Obvious:
Sunny
Sol
Daisy
Maybe not as obvious:
Polleen
Twig
Scrappy (in honor of you scrapping Lumbah)
Hopefully this at least helps with brainstorming! Excited for the release.
I really like the new idea for the game and I'm glad you're confident in it!
But if I had to fix Lumbah jump, based on the information in this video, I would just change it so you meet the Wizard (who I'm assuming acts as a mentor who helps you defeat the dragon) sooner, like at the top of the trees. Then you can have whatever the trials are in the mountain section of the game. The clouds could be the dragons domain. Of course the "vibe" of these areas would heavily shift, the clouds for example would have to feel a lot more sinister to make it more fitting for a dragon's home.
I would also make it so the dragon takes Lumbah's axe, a precious family heirloom, which is his motivation and also the reason he doesn't do the expected axe stuff despite being a lumberjack.
But I don't know how much of the story you had thought out and if any of this would even make sense. I think the new identity for the game will work much better.
That's not a bad idea Dieselnaut to meet the wizard sooner! I think that could work honestly and perhaps if the faceplant Idea doesn't work I could return to that, however everything seems to be fitting very nicely now. I do hope to use Lumbah again in the future for something though
You should add Lumbah as an easteregg somewhere in one of the sections:)
Also i think a cool name for Mr. Planthead would be 'Sunpotz'...
Nonetheless good video, keep up!
Definitely will! Thanks Bolrik, PlantyMcPlantFace Maybe??? :'D
Rad new character maaaate! 1st name pops into mind, Kid Petal. And I hope to see Lumber in another game. I reckon keep the original idea and make it a simple climb to the top with Lumber game, nothing too complex. Being he's a Dwarf, he should be wanting to get drunk on Plump Helmet wine. So when he Reaches the top, he drinks the wine, then wants another. He starts a new level a bit tipsy and that makes the difficulty a bit harder, stumbling around etc hahaha, so on and so forth, as the levels go on
Also, ya production values are getting better and better each vid mate! Great work!
ps. wishlisting Plantfall now 😁
oh it seems Lumber Jump had it's name changed, and not Face Plant, so now still wishlisted🤪
Thanks Paypercutts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah I've got a couple ideas for Lumbah, not sure what is gonna come from it but I like the drunk suggestion hahaha, I bet that would be a fun idea to explore. Rather than his house setting on fire, it could be a giant magpie done a poop on it, now instead of going up, we gotta dig all the way down (like a mining dwarf) to Australia to get the magpie boss :'D
Cheers for the wishlist and encouraging words man, always appreciate your kind support
@@saultoons 🤣👍 haha greeeaaaat idea!! No wukaz! Keep up the great work!!
Love the plant, but with lumber could do something like
Lumbah the lumber jack gets a order for wood to build a castle or smth, only one problem the wood is too hard for his axe to cut, but one night while at a bar he over hears a rumor of a night getting an sword enchanted by a wizard who lives in a tower floating in the sky the sword could cut anything, so lumber goes to get his axe enchanted, but on his way back to his house a young dragon hatchling obsessed with shiny things steals his axe and flies away
Que start of dragon arc
Idk I just love the art of lumber and sad to see him go 😔
It's annoying to have others tell you what to do with your story but couldn't help my little gremlin self
This is very imaginative and creative AnysnapL! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and leave your suggestion, I was sad to see Lumbah not on this game too but NOT TO WORRY, we will still be exploring Lumbah's story in the future I hope
You could of made the wizard evil and had him curse the lumberjack to where he couldn’t stop moving until he ran into something
Great idea :D Running curse haha
what if for Lunbah, its still the same parkour jump game, but you need to use an axe to cut trees down and carry the big logs then set them down to make bridges to proceed forward? then maybe have an occasional enemy (like an ent I suppose since you're chopping trees down) and make use of the same axe cutting animation as an attack that way you can build up to a boss fight at the wizard tower?
You’re essentially turning a very simple one button platformer into an action platformer, with enemies and bosses and more actions required - while it sounds like a really fun idea it’s not what I have in mind for the scope of this game project! :)
The time when everything clicks! Good choice in my opinion!
Thanks Sándor!
I could see lumbah getting a new axe or the wizard gives him the axes but it’s enchanted so you can add a throwing mechanic to it
You can use the axe to bring down trees that will bridge between platforms that you can't jump to and make an adventure to find your axe in the first act
ahah yeah a couple of people have suggested using the axe as a mechanic though I want to avoid overcomplicating the simple idea that I have.
Glad to see you used the meme template was the good choice
Thanks I hope it turned out well, was fun to make that hehe
Ah, I understand the switch now. I hope dev has been going well!
Great work as always. There are some stuff that could bring motivation for a steadfast lumberjack.
Does the Axe of Lumbah have any backstory? Is it a heirloom of a kind? Maybe the original got stolen by some pesky goblins and now he uses a placeholder in the game (if the axe has mechanics).
I would be a pretty pissed and avengeful lumber if my house was put on fire by a dragon and my stuff stolen in the same day. ESPECIALLY if it were arranged by the grumpy neighbour, the Wizard.
Yeah there are definitely some backstories involved in what I've written so I'm hoping to intertwine that somehow with the story - you have a solid clutch on the idea so far Jim, I hope I can do it justice :)
@@saultoons I believe in you Mr! 💪😀
I know that everything has been resolved at this point, but while I was hearing you talking about the problems that Lumbah had, I thought that The Wizard could be nearby and enchanted Lumbah's Axe so he could BONK the dragon, and the dragon could live all the way up, so Lumbah could chop some trees or other constructions along the way, to make bridges, ladders, and then when he finally reaches the top, he could BONK the head of the dragon with the back of the axe for burning the house down. I know that sounds dumb, but I also imagined like, the dragon actually just sneezed in the house, or that he loves to burn things, and since the Lumbah's house could be made of stem from the trees he chopped, the dragon thought that the house was a bunch of fallen trees, and then he could help to reconstruct the house, and Lumbah could work for the dragon chopping or making things of wood for him, so he can burn interesting things, and pay Lumbah with a little of his gold treasure. And the name could be BONK the Dragon, or something like that :b
I think you can use the Lumbah story. What you can do is make a regular platformer, but Lumbah uses his axe to do some puzzle solving like cutting down trees to make bridges. Even better part is... I have an idea to continue the rest of the game. You can use the wizard to teleport Lumbah to the dragon's domain. He'll also gain some cool powers that he can use to fight enemies. Then at the end of killing a bunch of enemies and solving a bunch of puzzles, the final boss will be THE DRAGON! MUAHAHAHA
Nice ideas, though I didn't go this way, more progress revealed TOMORROW in the next devlog :)
I honestly think the first setup could work, I mean the dragon just burned your house so of course you wanna go after him and beat his ass. The wizard might give you a weapon to do so
Yeah it definitely could’ve worked but I like how the new idea is going :)
@@saultoons Yeah of course, it’s great that you have different plans that work for you :)
Looks great, hope u finally release the game
That's the plan! More devlogs coming soon, thanks for watching :D
A great idea for your lumber dude, could have been aiming a throwing axe with your mouse and shooting/cutting down "lumber blocks" to change your pathing.
Yeah thats a nice idea, perhaps something to try in the future :D
I can imagine the number of hours to make this video 🤯 fantastic work!
hahah yeah it took a while Holden, a little sneak peak into the behind the scenes drawing in the upcoming video :)
@@saultoons awesome, looking forward to it.
Flowah
Looking at Lumbah's little drawing, would be cool to see sprites done like cutouts. Maybe the wizard is writing these stories in order to create a brave hero that can kill the dragon, but first they must brave their way out of their own stories.
Yeah I had thought of doing it in cut-outs but I would have to change the level scaling and not sure if it would mess up the level design I've done up until this point which I'm scared of hahaha :'D
I would LOVE to read a lumbar comic!
Also, perhaps Lumbah would be a chill game? He might chop wood and get mushrooms etc on collection quests for the wizard? Maybe he wants to be a wizard apprentice to beat up the dragon and will learn new skills along the way. I always thought it would end in a boss fight with the wizard helping out, and he might be reluctant and need convincing.
Also I think Sunny is a good name for the character. Or you could always have him be Planty the Potted Plant (he’d need a fedora for that though!6
I think my problem with the Lumbah and the game is really that I have written out the full story and it's hard for me to see it any other way now hahaha :'D We will get to the end of the lumbah story eventually!!!!!! Great suggestions
