Adding Your Requested Feature to my DREAM Game!

- I've been working on my dream game where you run your medieval tavern, selling drinks, hiring staff, and having fun. I let my community pick what I work on next cause I like to pretend to be a good guy. So to get started I sat down and wanted to understand what makes a character creation system good, so I looked at lots of ui systems. The basic functionality of the system involves loading an icon holder for each gameobject below a parent transform, there are 38 hairstyles, so Im going to need 38 icons loaded, then when you click on icon number 5, it activates the 5th child object, allowing me to handle this entirely through code, and not have to place a single icon myself.

Think about adding mirrors or any type of reflection in the game because why would I work on my looks if I can't see it
Ohh I just realized that the game will be multiplayer game. But I still thinks that the mirrors is a good idea

@@TJGameDev they were basically seen as “If you have a mirror, you have status”. So, it would depend on what you want your game to be! A quick suggestion/solution could be that it’s an object the player can obtain once their tavern is successful and they can afford to actually have a mirror! Obviously, this could be done in any capacity you see fit but that was the first place my mind went.
Few things that came to mind as I was watching:
• As the tavern increases in appearance points, maybe higher ranking people come into the tavern such as nobles, knights and clerics? There could be some quirk to these characters perhaps. Maybe the Noble doesnt pay some of the time because they are w@nkers.
• Serving the same customers too many times will cause them to pass out, or they get into a fight with another customer, which may break your table or decorations. The player will need to keep an eye on customer's unique features and see if you remember them continuously coming back to order, or maybe they start acting drunk/wobbly at their table so the player will also need to keep an eye on the seated customers at the same time.
• You could add weapons to the wall as decoration?
I don't develop games myself, I don't really want to suggest anything more because I don't know how hard these things are to implement, or if they are even any good.
Nah thank you so much for the suggestions man! Alot of them are doable, and I really like the idea of serving the same customer too much having consequences, I’ll have to figure out how to implement that.

Just give them a hidden buzz meter and make them pass out after so long. Who needs to know, it's a midevil tavern, it's realistic

You can have your character appear on a sign out front as the tavern's logo, so "TJ's Tavern" with a smiling picture of your character. You can also have a rare costumer come in that looks exactly like your character, and then some funny dialogue like "You look just like my twin!" or "Seems I have found my long lost brother!". Everything is looking great so far!
A VR support would actually be amazing! Good work.
Yea man, really dug the character creation breakdown, but VR support sounds really interesting with a game like this

What if the tavern appearance upgrades were more "Quality" based and less color based, like the ale? Like the table cloths go from Thin poor quality sheets, to a fine quality to a very fine embroidered cloth? This lets you keep the choosing color system, but gives more variety to the actual appearance of the items? Banners could be nigh identical, and some other bits like metals could be rusted, Polished Iron, and Gold.
Another idea I thought of (Because of the character creation process), Maybe the chosen race of your character could influence the ratios of customers. Let Human be the default and If you're a Dwarf for example, you get more dwarven patrons, and if you're an elf you get more elven patrons.
I like the ideas, I’ll try to add the quality to the table cloths
Maybe a logo creation for a sign outside the door, and text for a sign on the building?

Activating child nodes is great for the character creation process... but maybe Prefabs would help reduce the number of GameObjects in each character? You could store all the hairstyles in a single Assets folder and then Instantiate the chosen Prefab under your character's Parent object.
My gameobjects had a boatload of child objects until I switched to this approach...
Very Good point, I like turning them on and off as it’s fast for creating, and with skinned mesh renders they need a reference to the root bone they are connected to, but for the main game the script does a second loop through and deletes all the inactive ones
@@TJGameDev you can also simply merge all skinnedmeshrenderers in case you are not doing that yet. Will reduce the draw calls by a lot for all characters.

Seeing you crack open CZcams to figure out how to add a certain function really makes me smile. I’m going through Sebastian’s dark souls tutorial as my first time learning unity and c#. It feels overwhelming at times because I wish I knew how to create what I want from memory or intuition. So seeing someone like you who has done really cool stuff crack open CZcams gives me hope haha!

The first video there’s less explaining as to what things do, but Seb gets way more into explaining things as the series goes on. I’ve been having fun with it. Especially trouble shooting the mistakes I make
@@Acdrop1 yeah that's always fun. What is the series, I've been looking for something to follow as I've ran out of things to code from my knowledge. You said you wanted to code from memory, well the unity create with code course is good because it tells you to watch the section then do it. However you can just do this with the series your following by watching 5 minutes then doing it from memory.

Random events like bar fights or a bounty hunter coming into the tavern to collect information about a fugitive thats in your tavern would be cool. Just random events like that

I was struggling with moving the source object for the multi-aim constraint in animation rigging to move the head. Did you attach the source object to the camera? Cause when I do that it doesn't follow unless I move it manually in the editor.

Why is it so that when you are browsing for Eyebrows it is just the brows but when you are browsing the Facial Hair it is the berd placed on a head on the icon?
Ah probably just screwed up the screenshots, I was testing both to see what looks better, I think adding the head gives more context but what do you think?

Sorta, big games have features for changing nose size and moving eyes apart and such which I didn’t add, a bit above my pay grade though haha

@@TJGameDev ever think about starting your own team? You have the fan base for it. Subtasks out some stuff you dont find intresting, learn how to incorporate other peoples work into your own, hell even contracting out some coding.
