  • 1985 Honda ATC250ES Restoration Project. In Part 4, we remove the differential, the engine and more.
Vehicle: 1985 Honda ATC250ES, Engine: 246 cc (15.0 cubic inches).
    What are we doing?
Our main goal for today is to make some good progress on this project. We will be removing the rear differential, the engine and while were at it, taking a look at the differential fluid, bearings, etc. We would like to move this project closer to completion for our customer.
    What are we using?
We are using mostly common hand tools, wrenches, ratchets, sockets, and more, however, we will utilize an impact gun for some of the disassembly today.
    How long will this take?
We have the better portion of disassembly already completed. We spent a few hours working on this specific part (Part 4) of the project.
Did you come across anything interesting?
Absolutely, its interesting taking this machine apart. It seems each part of the disassembly reveals a story such as, they must have liked to ride through water and mud, or this was well maintained, and even the well, its a mess and doesn't appear to have been maintained at all... No worries though! We will work through it. We only had 1 bolt head twist off which was in the rear differential.
What was the craziest part of today's work?
Finding the differential fill with water, not fluid. We haven't come across that before.
Can you do this job without power tools?
Absolutely, you can! Is it ideal? No, but don't let that stop you from getting the job done. You can do it!
Should I take on restoration project of my own?
Sure! Put a plan together, stay organized along the way and don't lose parts. I've found projects or repairs go much smoother when I designate an area to be used solely for the purpose at hand until the job is complete. This provides a space to put nuts and bolts, old and new parts, etc. without the worry or actuality of cross contaminating the work area with other parts, projects, tools, and even garbage.

I have removed my axle an the four bolts holding it to the swing arms an the four holding it to the driveshaft housing an my diff will not separate from the swing arm on the right side is there something I'm missing? I see yours just popped right out of there I still have my shock hooked up but I don't see that holding it back.

Seems like you got it all. Did you also remove the dust shield underneath the diff?

@@redskinman0 we shouldn’t have to. Engine ran very well before we tore it down. Cross your fingers for me. 👍

If you think water in the differential is bad, you ever cracked open a 250sx rear end fill cap the have literal dirt fall out? I think someone let the machine sit in a river, it has deep water engravings in the axle tubes and the differential vent line has a colony of ants living in it lol
