The thing is. Legitimately the only thing you need to do is never install ANYTHING that you didn't find for yourself. As long as you don't INSTALL SHIT FROM RANDOM LINKS THAT PEOPLE SEND YOU Windows 10 will prevent pretty much anything from compromising your machine.

Tim was scared to piss off the hacker. Even though he helped Tim get rid of it, he tried to do the same to other streamers like Ninja by sending them links through his Epic account ans Twitter. He did it with a reason folks.
Yeah, I don’t think the good guy hacker is that much of a good guy. If he was, he would have just made it clear immediately instead of messaging people on Twitter under Tim’s account. Probably smart route for Tim to go the nice route tho bc he could have fucked his shit up.
GymLeaderJim he couldnt immediatly. What he did is called a rat. He has the ability to control his pc when its on. Meaning tim would see him so he had to wait for tim to open things like twitter; epic etc.

So basically when he clicks the link, it downloads an exe, the exe is hidden, it's a rat (remote acces trojan) and the terminal on his computer he can access any computers that clicked on the specific link. Malwarebytes blocks some of them, it's really easy to setup ones that it doesnt see, some people even make their own. But yes, use malwarebytes, and dont click on sus links.
Most "hackers" are pretty chill people and will help you out. The enjoyment of it like Tim said is seeing if we can do it and improving our skills. Myself and others spend a lot of our downtime just fiddling with stuff and I even went into a software security field to improve protections on flawed software.

What the heck, I like other streamers and really like their content. But this is just such a genuine post and interesting story and loved it. Tim's got a potential future in podcasting if he ever feels like trying it out?!
That's a RAT. I got one of those on my first laptop and had a VERY similar experience. I was probably 13 at the time and I noticed one day that my the blue light indicating my webcam being on was lit. I checked for programs such as skype that may have been using my webcam and had nothing using it. The person watching noticed this and sent me a windows pop up that pretty much just said hi. I asked him if he could hear me over my webcam mic and he responded that he could. We got into a chat for a while and I pretty much just asked him how it happened. I haven't had a virus since then. I am 21 now. Overall it was more of an interesting experience than it was a scary experience. I think that the person who hacked me realized that I was young and that I had nothing that he could gain from my information.

I love your reaction. I had a similar experience with a guy I played a game with when I was like 13, I dunno why but I honestly trusted him completely, and still do. He just took over control of my PC to show me he could, for a laugh, and I didn't mind at all cause he'd genuinely been my friend for years and I knew he would never be malicious towards me. Davinacious this happened to me on steam today. A guy sent me a link pretending to be someone else and got control of my pc and stole my steam account and by that time I changed all my other accounts and unplugged my pc. I’m so scuffed atm rip my steam

he wasn’t ratted.. a rat is a remote access tool meaning he would have a back door to the computer but he wouldn’t be able to start typing in notepad to tim coz tim wouldn’t see it, he had a phishing tool linked to tim’s computer with administrative access you can’t get ratted by a link

The guys a grey hat, or even just someone who's learning/knows a little bit, if the guy had any malicious intent he would have just gone straight for Tim's paypal or tried to extort him instead of going through the effort of planting a RAT, waiting around, then one day typing to Tim.

@@waddlingpenguin452 Downloads can be run silently in the background and instigated upon loading a page. Windows 10 updated this behavior recently to try and alert people to any download and require their permission to finish downloading, but there are always people learning ways to get around or trick the end user.
