Hi Luca. Being a brazilian myself too, I kind of had a similar experience as Mario's one. I "finished" the english school, and got my "certificate" (double quotes necessary here lol) but I was terrible at speaking it. It got it improved automatically by using it, little by little. But the real improvement came after I tried to learn a little bit of russian, because I had a trip to Russia and I knew it was going to be hard - it was before the World Cup, so no hopes for english speakers back then, and then russian language made me realized that english was not so hard 😅.
After that, I started learning french and I went from zero to fluency. That took me about 4 years. In those 4 years I learned two things: 1. english is indeed an easy language when you compare it to the others, specially russian. 2. being a student again I wouldn't make the same mistakes as the first time I was struggling with the foreign monster, so the "rules" kinda applied to both french and english, such as completly forget about portuguese for anything but the necessary and then english got a LOT better since then.
funny thing. It really works 😁

    Very inspiring video!!
I came to China 11.5 years ago with zero knowledge of teaching English. I had written a few books (not language-related) that were endorsed by some mega-bestselling authors, but I had no ESL teaching experience. My original plan was to come to China, teach for a year, experience the people and the culture, and go back to the U.S. However, I saw a huge need for English training and I jumped in with both feet and started by teaching 32 classes a week to primary and middle school kids. I also picked up some medical doctors and a few business executives as students who were planning to come to the U.S. for specialized training at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. I was teaching, eating, and sleeping with no time for anything else.
I read Dr. Stephen Krashen's book, 'The Natural Approach to Language Learning' and started reading every book I could find on teaching and learning languages. Most importantly, in addition to the classes I was teaching (teachers here thought I was insane for teaching so many classes), I was spending several hours a week in Chinese English teachers' classes observing what they were doing (right and wrong). That alone was an education for me.
In the first year and a half, I read over 40 books on teaching ESL and language learning. I developed my own style.
My results were beyond my imagination. I helped one doctor get accepted into Harvard Medical School (she wanted to earn an M.D. in America so that she could be certified in America) and another into a world-class program at Johns Hopkins. I started attracting elite students and started seeing their test scores rise dramatically. I also got some average students and was seeing the same results. One of the first students I had shortly after coming here is now teaching at UCLA. Two other students are in doctorate programs at Princeton and the University of Maryland.
I also received various teaching awards that no foreign teacher had ever been awarded in the history of this province. I was getting interviewed by local and regional television networks and one of them even did a short documentary about me and my work. The predominant national network, Central China Television Network, picked up the short documentary and ran it nationally numerous times.
I allowed the parents of these kids to decide my fees and they were paying me 4 times as much as other foreign teachers here. I found myself alienated from other foreign teachers as most of them weren't really serious about teaching English. It was a way that they could earn money while traveling. I understood that because that was more or less my own plan and purpose for coming to China. But, my plan changed.
To date, I and my team have put kids in top colleges throughout the world. Our average Chinese student who takes the SAT has scored 1530. Our average TOEFL student has scored 110. We have succeeded to a level that is far above anything I ever imagined. I now find myself tutoring and training Asian English teachers (most of them are Chinese). Most of all, I've had the time of my life.

The teacher was right when he replied, "I'm not the best teacher. I'm a good teacher." Indeed, there is no such a thing as being the best teacher. That would be way too pretentious no matter how good you really are at the language. Everyone knowing the language well is just "good" at it. No one is "the best". The only "best" is for native speakers as they have it as mother tongue, but even so, it is widely known that natives also make mistakes.

On Mairo's comment about not having too many opportunities to actually speak English, I (also Brazilian) have been playing Squad for a little while now, and it's been good English practice with plenty of native speakers. Squad is this multiplayer military simulator kinda game, with a very heavy emphasis on team play and communicating with your team (by voice, with a microphone) at _all_ times; just watch the channel Karmakut to have a sample of it. I am kind of a nerd with military stuff, but I did have to study some comms guides for the game. I do consider myself a fluent English speaker for most normal conversation situations, and can discuss complex ideas and whatnot, but in the game in the middle of "combat" I can actually get quite caught up finding the words to describe the features of where I saw "enemy" players moving around or firing from. I actually watch videos on the game and watch native speakers play to get an even better picture of how they communicate and what words they use. It's actually _great_ practice, and since it's a game with plenty of servers up I can play it pretty much everyday. And, again, I get to speak and talk all kinds of trash with real native speakers, lol. Having grown up learning English with video games, they have always been my number one resource for language learning.
...Except for Japanese. I can totally relate with Mairo having trouble with Japanese. You can't get comprehensible input with Japanese without having studied quite a bit of it first. It made me put off learning other languages for so long because I always assumed they'd be as much trouble as Japanese has been. But Italian as I start to learn it is just so much easier (for a native Portuguese speaker) it's off the charts, lol

  • @nendoakuma7451

I think in some languages dedicated vocabulary study is actually very helpful for active reproduction of a word. If I read a lot, I may recognize the word, but in some languages I can’t necessarily remember how to write it or even the precise pronunciation. Even if I listen a lot I can’t always remember exactly how to pronounce it. But doing too much and neglecting other aspects is a problem. In the last few years I’ve been learning Spanish and I’ve felt no need ro practice the vocabulary so far . But I’ve also studied a lot of tonal languages and for them I need a little special attention to the words to properly learn them.

Luca Lampariello I understood very well your interview. About Mairo, for his students, not is necessary comments, because his method is very effective. But is hard, so is necessary that you study a lot. How Mairo spoke, no has promise with "magic powder" to you learn, it is necessary much study and dedication. Thanks for the interview. Ps.: sorry for my poor write, I'm a student in learning.

I 100% agree, to learn English you need to be consistence and of course there's no limit to learn English and say yeah I did it I'm done know I'm fluent! I mean you need to learn every day for at least 3years to be good not excellent but just good.
If you don't know WHY you're learning English you'll have a hard time and you'll quit sooner.

As pessoas têm dificuldade para aprender inglês aqui no Brasil porque o brasileiro tem um QI médio de 83 pontos. Mal sabemos o português direito. Somos o país que joga jogo do tigrinho. Basta olhar para os políticos em quem votamos.

Hi Luca! I'm Brazilian and speak Portuguese, Spanish, English, and I study German (A2). I agree that motivation is the most important aspect of learning a foreign language but, to continue being motivated is important to realize the progress you had. In my opinion, this is very difficult because when you study a programming language for example, in one week is very easy for everyone to see the evolution. But learning a foreign language is a slower process and more difficult to perceive the results. What are your tips for someone to realize the evolution? Thanks a lot for your explanations. Regards.

On whether or not you need grammar… I learned Portuguese with no grammar study, because I already speak Spanish. I think it very much depends on how similar it is, like Luca says. (To be fair, anything in the past tense is a hot mess.) However, you do need grammar and explanation for languages that are further off. Like, I teach Japanese and there are some concepts that do not really transfer automatically. Take the words for siblings. If you came across “oniisan” and you realize that is the brother, speakers of most Western languages are probably going to assume that is the only word for brother. We are not going to wonder if this word specifically means an older brother or younger, or if it means my brother or your brother, or whether we use that word in direct address …. We don’t make those differentiations, so we don’t look for them. These sorts of things need a little explanation. However, once you know the concept exists, you’ll do pretty well at picking it out.
