    Summary
In this conversation, Luca Lampariello addresses the criticism and nasty comments he has received as a polyglot. The conversation explores various topics, including the bi-directional translation method, memorizing words, language learning methods like Anki, language skills, and the limitations of assessing language abilities on CZcams. Luca also delves into the psychology behind leaving nasty comments and offers insights into dealing with criticism.
    Takeaways
Criticism and negative comments are common in the world of language learning, and it's important to address them with fairness and understanding.
The bi-directional translation method may require more attention and time, but it can be highly effective for those who are willing to invest in it.
The number of words memorized is not as important as how effectively they are used in meaningful communication.
Different language learning methods work for different people, and it's essential to find what works best for individual learning styles.
Assessing language skills based solely on CZcams videos can be misleading, as live conversations and interactions provide a more accurate measure of fluency.
Leaving nasty comments often reflects the personal issues and mindset of the commenter, rather than the quality of the content creator's work.

I mean…they can’t do it, so they bash real polyglots/mathematicians/physicists. But polyglots get the worst of it, because EVERYONE who knows how to type is fascinated by languages
Non te la prendi con te stesso. L’atmosfera è da tempo già riscalda, le guerre e l’odio nelle media fanno la gente impazzire. Non gli possiamo interdire da usare l’internet, quindi che cosa resta se non proteggerci stessi

As a native Russian speaker who has seen videos of Luca speaking with a native Russian speaker, I can say that Luca has excellent fluent Russian with great pronunciation. I can say the same about his French, which I speak well. His brilliant English we all know very well. Luca is a true polyglot.

I even came across a video where he talks in Hungarian with his teacher. A lot of polyglots pick up Asian languages, not Hungarian. 😅 Luca had a great fluency and pronunciation even as a starter.
He obviously had the advantage of already being skilled at language learning, but still.

I remember Lucas first videos, which were like a gasp of fresh air, given the general scarcity of good quality content on the internet and CZcams. I believe he doesn’t owe anybody anything and definitely is in no need to prove anything to anyone. He has done more for the language community as all those ‘commentators’ put together. I don’t care if he makes mistakes or has a level, which micht be lower than expected. He is the one leading by example. Always a big fan of yours, grande Luca!

As the life expectancy increases, it seems to be the case that we need to take more proactive measures to fortify our cognitive abilities. In very much the same way we need to change our diets as we age, we need to weight train and stretch daily. I think learning 1 or more foreign languages to a near native level should be added to that list. Just like playing an instrument like the violin or piano bolsters your cognitive abilities, language learning does very much the same thing. I know that I am preaching to the choir here.

Luca, I love your videos and very much respect and admire your language skills.
If I had to guess why we've seen an increase in certain types of negative comments, it's possibly related to general frustration with the direction of youtube. At one time there were no ads, real people, & organic growth; now there are tons of ads, sponsored videos, every channel selling merch, memberships, courses, & doing shenanigans to game the algorithm. Even if all this is unavoidable, it has led to youtube overall feeling much less organic, over-commercialized, and has made people very skeptical and suspicious.
Of course, there's also just something about internet comment sections that brings out the worst in people. Anyway, don't let the trolls bring you down, Luca. ✌️❤️

None! Their energy would be better used on actually learning, and perhaps they’d see more success if they weren’t so focused on negativity. You on the other hand inspire many. You speak my native language and my second language (where I lived for a long time and can judge the accent and idiomatic usage), neither of which are your own first language, and I can confidently say that you are very close to native level. Your word stress shows understanding, not just verbatim copying.Yes, you make mistakes occasionally but they are minor and subtle errors. Most people would assume you are a native speaker, at least for a while. I have listened to dozens of youtube-polyglots in these languages and you are easily in the top three. You are also super humble and kind as well, which makes me want to cheer you on. Don't listen to the haters, they are clueless.

If Luca Lampariello is a fake polyglot, then nearly everyone collecting European languages is a fake polyglot. His mastery of the Indo-European branches is impressive. It really takes a long time for Luca to mispronounce a single (Standard American) English word and generally it's quite small and nitpicky. There's always a limit of time and energy, so it's practically impossible to have a "native-like" level in 5+ language families. We make compromises when choosing what language(s) to apply ourselves to.

But it does not mean that I have myself to criticize you for some dislikenesses .I even learn from you wether good or bad because those are ideas that can be used to advance .Some people will be jealous of you , won't accept your success .But it is not a problem coz U know your own value .Keep up the best work of language sharing .Waiting for amazing videos to come.

The BDT is like any other method. It depends on the individual. For example, I used Anki to learn English vocabulary, and it worked fine. But using anki to try to learn Russian vocabulary didn't work for me for whatever reason. The same method (Anki) had different results to the same person (myself) 😂. Life is crazy. So, BDT could work or not. But it is a very interesting method.

I have found the srs algorithms hard to make work long term. I used it to learn 2200 kanji over a year, and even a year later after adding the last ones, there are still a fair number I have trouble with. I read daily, but many are still quite specific to a context, so you can go a long time not seeing them.
On the other hand, just by reading I've learned around 10k words because of the effects of interleaving and seeing the same word in different contexts. I also was just doing what I wanted with the language.
I think the effectiveness of recall drills drops off sharply after the first week in terms of benefit to comprehension. The knowledge is just a bit fragile until you can connect it to other things.

@@CaptainWumbo I appreciate your fully-replied reaction, you referred to some delicate truth out there concerning the effectiveness of the method... yet I guess at the end of the day, it all comes down to your learning style, since my brain had put the majority of the words I learned from cards into real good use. I had at least 7 different sentence examples for each word I learned, as I said I made sure to optimize the effectiveness for each word to a high degree.

Notes from this video: emotions must be engaged when Learning to be effective. Ideally it’s great to have some type of musical association with it, weather it’s in the language you study or instrumental music. The emotional association will cause it to stick. People shouldn’t focus on 1 million words. Just ONE at a time. Learning methods are just like our languages preferences. Some languages appeal to people more than others, some methods appeal more than others to people. Creativity is naturally imperfect. The imperfect nature makes it unpredictable. When it’s “Perfect” it gets predictable and loses the creative spark. Language learning comes from your heart. It’s not about pleasing people. It’s truly a game to play. Language learning comes inward from the soul as opposed to outside and doing it to get reactions from others. And last to quote Eckahart Tolle, you are right “What you react to others in ALSO In YOU!❤

    All good stuff.
However I can tell you my point of view - I only trust those YT polyglots whom I have heard speaking in a language I know.
I must admit I am leaving sometimes harsh comments indeed. Not on your channel (yet ;)). I assure you it is not becasue I have pathetic life.
I feel that this toxic positivness is truly hurting. Some people watch those guys claiming they learned Korean or Polish in 3 months and reached fluency in 6 (sometimes even in just 3). Then that poor viewer is learning relatively simple language liek English or German and cannot get to B1. Even using those advertised by "polyglots" tools. And they start to think they are dumb.
What I like about Luca though is that he says openly - IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT. It will be boring chore at times. And when the video title says 'How to boost a language learning and get fluent fast" the video is about taking intensive course in a country where your target language is spoken.
Indeed - there are no shortcuts in language learning. You can use your time better, you can make hard work a bit fun, but that's it. For someone who is not learning foreign language full time B2 is 2 years away. Sorry.
So - great piece, thanks for this. I like your attitude that not all criticis is just 'internet hate'.
    Keep up good work.

There are people who skip and skim and give knee-jerk reactions to things without context. Unfortunately, these types of comments can sneak past our defenses and throw us for a loop. Back when I was a university prof, I learned something about student evaluations. In every class, there were a couple students who thought you were the worst teacher ever and there were a few who thought you were one of the best they ever had. It's what the general consensus that gives the best feedback. FWIW, your content (old articles and some videos) on the importance of starting with the prosody of complete sentences is one of those key insights that had a profound effect on both my pronunciation and language learning in general.

I'd like to ask you, Mr Lampariello, if it is a good idea to study more than one language at the same time. I'm doing this for German and French, two languages that I like. Meanwhile, I realized that I need to improve my English, so I listen several podcasts in this 3 languages.

Hey Luca, I'm a Brazilian, and we native Portuguese Brazilian speakers have a hard time when it comes to verb conjugation systems. Even very common verbs like ser (to be), haver (to there be), ouvir (to hear) couse problems to me 😂. So, if even a NATIVE has problems, let alone a polyglot who is trying to learn a foreign language.

There are plenty of fake polyglots all over CZcams but Lucas is not one them. He's a true and genuine polyglot. The best way to handle the haters is just to ignore them.

I don't use BDT. I don't use ANKi. I don't like memorizing. SRS is for remembering -- it doesn't teach. I don't use it. So what? I know that Luca is a polyglot, because I've heard him talk at length in 3 languages (other than Italian) that I know well. Is he fluent? Who cares? 没关系. No importa. N'importe pas. Önemli değil. It is true that being a polyglot doesn't make him a good teacher. I watch his videos to see if he has ideas that help ME. And he does, often enough that I watch ALL his videos.

You are right about the nasty comment- why watch the whole video, then all you can do is complain about it. I am thinking JEALOUSY and lack of commitment! To hell with them, Luca! I have heard from other polyglots about how you don´t retain all of them every day and you do get ´rusty´ when you don´t use them. It´s like anything else you learn- if you don´t use it, you will forget it over time. I am currently learning 5 languages. None of the languages are super easy to learn. Spanish is the easiest of them, Polish is the hardest (my joke about Polish is saying, ´I never thought I would learn a language that makes German seem like a walk in the park¨). Like you, I do it for self-improvement, not to impress people. I enjoy it because it is a supreme challenge to learn them. I just keep thinking how good I will feel when I become fluent in all of them. The languages are French, German, Italian, Polish (only started 2 months ago), and Spanish. My biggest issue is not having the money to pay for tutors or chat sharing programs online, so I do it myself, as well as I can - A LOT of talking to myself! (As a side note, I can´t even count the number or videos I have watched and discarded as cheap quality and nothing much of value! I don´t like flashy, in-your-face videos. Just tell me the information and help me if I need it. That is what you do consistently. Every video of yours that I have watched has been worth taking notes. Keep up the good work. Thanks for all of your videos!!

Leaving nasty comments is a sign of inmaturity. Rather than accepting that someone can have different opinion or use different method, people take it as a personal attack on them.
You will learn way more from people that you don't agree with, trying to understand their point of view than from listening to the echo chamber

Regarding the very first negative criticism... "the bi-directional translation method seems like it would bore me to tears". God forbid one have even an ounce of discipline or general conscientiousness, right? Oh, no, I have to sit my ass down and work hard for a bit. The world shall end if I do this. Yeah, not really. People who aspire to something but don't have what it takes to improve will sometimes deal with that by tearing others down - or, trying to, anyway.

Does having multiple personalities or the ability to compartmentalise help a person become a polygot knowing dozens of languages? Does it count as the abilities belonging to a singular person? Will they lose their memories or abilities when identities that was split start to come together? Some of the recent questions on my mind.. Any enlightening input is welcome!
