See how to replace the water pump on a Yamaha outboard in this video from Boats.net. This includes replacing the impeller on our Yamaha F225TXRC outboard. John will show you how to remove the lower casing and then disassemble the water pump. On this particular unit, we found a few other worn parts that we needed to replace in addition to the components in the Yamaha outboard water pump repair kit. We’ll replace the impeller and other parts of the water pump, and then we’ll tackle washers and the drive shaft collar.

John, Thanks for sharing this and all you do for the boating community. It's tough these days and people like you help a lot. So.. My buddy and I tackled this job and all went well, but I didn't have that fancy driver for the locking collar that you used in the video. So I thought of "using a socket" idea, but do you know what worked best? Mu buddy said.. What about the old impeller? That worked great and came with a free cushion! I thought that I'd share, not to take away from the pro!

Here is a good pro tip. Don’t add too much grease to the top of that spine shaft! Overtime that grease compresses (and has no way to get out). I could not get my boat to shift properly. I took it to the mechanic and we had to squirt some gasoline up there to break up all the impacted grease and then it shifted fine after that.

Great video. However, Yamaha notes Loctite 572....not grease. Also, there is general or specific torque spec. for the water pump housing bolts. Cleaning the female threads should be noted so your torque is not skewed. Also, the area should be cleaned of sand/debris before installing a new water pump. Grease is not noted for those bolts in any service manual.

Great video, may help to let viewers know what size bolts so that the right tools can be made available prior to disassembly. Other than that I think it's one of the best DIY Yamaha videos I've seen!

Great video, great serie of vids. How fast should you get water out of tellhole when lower end of engine is submersed in water. It worked prior to impeller change and everything looks fine after I rechecked today.

John, I completed this water pump replacement per your video. It worked will except for two things: 1. The woodruff key was hopelessly bound in. I needed to dremel it out. and 2. The seating of the housing over the new impeller required I zip tie the rubber fins in advance curving in the fins in the proper direction in order to insert the impeller into the cartridge. I have no idea how yours just seated when pressing straight down. The impeller fins are almost 1/2" wider than the housing all around. Lastly, I failed to properly line up the shift linkage with the lower unit during install. Rookie mistake but one easy to make. Thanks for the great instructions. I would not have tackled this project without your insight.

John, my bad. The housing DOES in fact press over the rubber impeller exactly as it did for you in the video. It just took more moxie than I used initially. Thank you.

Gotta spin that drive shaft (in the operating direction) while you are pushing down. That gets the impeller fins to bend and fit.

Very nice and helpful video with the complete explanation. “ I would like to see on the 2006 Yamaha 225 counter rotation how to disconnect the forward gear and the bearing? That one is coming with nut in the bearings carrier. Is there any link I can go? Thank you very much and have a wonderful holidays. Valentín

I have a 2003 mercury 225 4 stroke outboard I heard it takes the same water pump etc?

  • @caryholt54

I have a 200HP saltwater 2-stroke yamaha. Every video I watch shows the water impeller curled in the same direction as this video. When I disassembled mine, the impeller was curled in the opposite direction. Do any engines curl the opposite direction? I was then left wondering if I should follow my gut and install the same as shown here or whether to put it back in the same orientation it was. I am thinking mine might have been installed wrong the last time it was done. The pump housing otherwise looks identical to that shown here.
