  • See our Yamaha F225 lower unit disassembly step-by-step in this video from Boats.net. This engine has seen better days, and is barely running. In this video, we’re working on the lower unit of the engine. The lower unit has already been removed from the motor, but if you need to see how to remove the lower unit on your outboard, check out this video: • Yamaha F225 Water Pump...
In this video, we’ll remove the water pump and then attack the upper bearing and prop shaft housings. Then, we’ll remove the shift shaft and drive shaft. Then we’ll remove the needle bearing, the forward gear bearing, and the prop housing gear.
Now this process shows you how to completely disassemble the lower unit, which might help you out if you’re planning an overhaul on your Yamaha outboard’s lower unit. In our case, it’s a good way to assess just how much work we have in store to get this unit running again.

Thanks for the videos. I love the breakdown and explanation. I know you sometimes put links and descriptions of the tools you use. Im specifically interested in that bearing removal slide hammer you used to pull the reverse gear and bearing from the carrier assembly.

I had a bad dog gear and reverse gear. Sourced parts from all over the net and am able to get it back up and running for $570. New unit is $2200. Refurb units are $800-1200.

nice vid really enjoyed it, have a problem with my lower unit every time I change the gears they go bad after only one trip, it starts with a knocking sound then it shortly after it goes and the oil pump starts to leak oil to I think it cuz of the lower unit oh also the lower unit makes a houning sound to any tips on how to fix thanks much

Question, underneath the waterpump there is two lower unit oil seals running on the drive shaft. My driveshaft has some rust and two grooves that the oil seals made in it. I know you can get speedy sleeves for the oil pump but is there speedy sleeves that I can slide down the driveshaft to take care of the grooves at the lower unit oil seal housing?
Thanks, awesome job, and can not wait to see a video about replacing the exhaust due to corrosion.

I have a question for you. I'm no marine mechanic so I'm kind of scratching my head. I have a 87 75hp Mercury Mariner and I service it every single season, no leaks anywhere, Everytime I drain the lower unit, the fluid is clean. No water, no metal. So I started to take my boat out this season, and now when I accelerate, I hear this clicking/knocking sound out of the lower unit. I can rev the engine out of gear and no noise. The noise only occurs under load, the noise is rhythmic and gets louder as you gain speed. But the noise does not get faster. Any ideas of what it could be? It's driving me nuts. I replaced the prop and balancer recently and did not change anything, thank you in advance.

Nice but you did not show a lower with a retainer nut under that drive shaft seal you need a special kind of socket 4 prong in a 300 yamaha lower. Any advice on how to get that out if the drive shaft was locked up and wont turn

nice video, well made, but one tip, that press work at 12:38 NEED a face sheild, or at BEST a press with a safety door/full enclosure, as when some old bearings, etc. 'pop', they do so like a grenade going off!!, splinters/ balls, rollers going every which way, so face and eye protection is a MUST. (also for those with hearing sensitivities (Autism, sensory processing dissorder, etc.), this is VERY LOUD, wear ear MUFFS :-)) ).

Can you replace a 25" shaft with a 20" shaft if you have the same lower unit for a f100 txrx ? Mine came with a 25" and I bought a 20" but the shaft and shfit shaft are too long. The lower unit i bout was used and is making a clunk noise after you shift it in gear and give it more throttle. My old one never maid the noise. So I was going to use the original lower unit and just transfer the input shaft over ?

John, I am the 3rd owner of a Yamaha F150 TLRC (2004, 1005 hours) and am overhauling the water pump and replacing seals for my first time. I do not know the repair history of this engine. The drive shaft bearing carrier is stuck very hard in the lower unit housing. I am using the MT0016 puller you use in the video and have applied heat with a heat gun. I was unable to rotate the carrier at all, even with a brass drift and ball peen hammer. The bearing carrier flange eventually broke on one the side facing the shift linkage while using the MT0016 slide hammer, so about 2/3 of the flange remains. I am trying to salvage what I can. The drive shaft is junk due to badly worn upper seal surfaces. I suspect severe corrosion in the bearing carrier bore in the lower unit housing and had a small amount of water in the lower unit lube oil. Have you ever seen one this tight? And do you have any recommendations? Great video, very helpful, especially the tool list and references.
