Probably the best live version of this song I've found. While, technically, not being the acoustic version I was seeking it's a wonderful rendition of what is probably my favourite FC song. And I noticed a few comments applauding the sound quality... I'd like to add my appreciation of whoever mixed/recorded this. It is exceptional. Quite splendid.
Exemplary sound quality. Each instrument sounding crisp and clear, and in particular Dave Pegg's bass has such a rich warm tone. Whoever the "sound guy" was, he or she deserves a medal. Oh, and the performance was nice too!
Peggy on a 5 string bass.....What a player and what a band !!! Only seen them a couple of times but definitely need to see them again and, hopefully, soon.
This performance is fabulous, but my favorite performance of it (also live) was on their 1996 album "Old New Borrowed Blue." I don't think it's on CZcams, although at least two other tracks from the album are.
@@adeblair Indeed. Saw FC in 2022 for the first time since their 1979 'farewell' tour and was very impressed. No resting on their laurels, lots of quality new material from the 'Shuffle and Go' album plus stuff from 'Full House' (50 year celebrations interupted by Covid) that sounded totally fresh. And SN played and sang with real skill and conviction. Have also seen him with the Albion Christmas Band - he really is very, very good.
Goosebumps.. every time i listen to hit.. by Fairport or Ralph it doesn't matter.. great song!
One of the sweetest love songs ever written. Still gives me shivers.
They could so easily be Thomas Hardy's words, so sensual.
I will never get tired of this. one of my 8 desert island discs. and a fabulous version

Excellent comment - totally agree! What a wonderful story!
Just simply a brilliant story-telling song. Fairport is spectacilar!
Lovely version of this classic, love it. Good venue too.

Caught this on bb4 a couple of weeks back. Feckin awesome. Went to Cropredy a few times in the past. This makes me shiver! Long live Fairport!
Fantastic sound quality. Beautiful song.
There you have it ladies and gents... a complete Thomas Hardy novel in a 7 minute song courtesy of McTell and the Fairports
Rather happy for a Thomas Hardy story . ;)
@@adeblair 😄 Imagine if someone wrote a song inspired by, say, *Jude the Obscure*
@@snicky58 Could be good but it wouldn't be a happy song that's a certainty. :)

Wonderful. Thanks for uploading this gem.
Beautiful and haunting. True musicians one & all.
Quality! Beaudiful! Love it
Beautifully orchestrated version of the original by Ralph McTell
Written by Ralph, for Fairport....great song.......!!
Girlfriend bought me the album as a Christmas pressie in '89, sublime!
Meraviglioso. Wonderful!
Ric Sanders violin adds an extra emotiontional element to what IMHO IS Fairports most romantic song!
Great song, great musicianship
Excellent ❤
I wish I had been there. Must have been a great night.

Still great
REMARKABLE!!!
A great version of a Ralph McTell song.....written for Fairport.......!!
Why won't the Beeb let them release this gig on DVD?
Looks like Simon got an acoustic like Ian Anderson's..
Does anyone know what it is ? Would love one ,
Simon is playing an Armstrong guitar. I have guitar envy!
Awesome sound from it!
Agree Chris but maybe it is the Fairports who won't? Great concert though. Look for a download for it maybe?
MAL
Written by Ralph McTell.
why do i keep getting an ANNOYING advert for 'the voice??????? I czn't get rid of it - bloody annoying
they own this - your soul too!!
This is my favourite piece of Fairport music. I much prefer it to Ralph McTell's original. Blasphemous, I know, but there it is.
It's good....but it's not Ralph.
Ralph wrote the song for the Fairports.
Very nice..... until the bass comes booming in and overpowers everything else !!!
It's very smug and self satisfied crap .......
Says the man whose three feeble out of tune videos have amassed less than twenty views between them in three months.

Mark seems to have 'issues' with the current Fairport line-up. This is his second unpleasant FC review.
@@Wotsitorlabart He might be jealous. Simon Nichol can do two things Mark will never be able to. Sing and play the guitar properly.
