You sound so nice singing this song. Your voice brings tears to my eyes. Not in a bad way, just feeling the emotion of this song. You captured it, and here it is in 2021.

Wonderful Amy, I'm into Vinyl collecting again after all these years and was able to obtain the "Fotheringay" album in great shape, lucky to find it indeed. I like you, am a Huge Sandy Denny fan, there is a certain timelessness to her voice, haunting, she seems to summon spirits from long ago, deep in that English forest she is from. It seems since we sadly lost her, you are the best at channeling her music now, this is WONDERFUL, thank you - Scott

One of my favourite Fairport Convention songs, and you do it justice. It's been quite some years since i've been to the annual Fairport Convention reunion at Cropredy, Oxfordshire, 1989 I think was my last. Those concerts I attended were magical. The musical family tree for this band is vast and many previous family members were re-united when I attended.

A few details: Dave Swarbrick (fiddle) and Dave Mattacks (drums) were NOT members of Fotheringay, nor were they credited with playing on either of Fotheringay's two albums (the second was never released until '08). Besides Denny and Lucas (who were not married at the time), Fotheringay was comprised of Jerry Donahue (an American guitarist), Pat Donaldson (bass) and Gerry Conway (drums). (Swarbrick, Mattacks and Conway all played with Fairport Convention at one time, as did Trevor Lucas, and of course, Sandy.) (Conway later played with Cat Stevens and 'Tull). And by the way, the song is about Mary, Queen of Scots, who had been imprisoned in Fotheringay Castle.

Thanks John. I knew I messed up the line-up of fotheringay after I had made the video, confusing it with a line-up of FPC. But by this time, I already had many comments and views so the vid stayed. Amy M

By the way, the 'lady in the tower' was the unhappy Mary Queen of Scots. She was Catholic and had the better claim to the English throne. So Elizabeth kept her in a nasty castle for 15 years or something. Then Burleigh, her spy chief got some people to put an escape up to her. One of her ladies was a go- between - also a placed agent. It isn't clear what Mary had to do with it at all. But they chopped her head off anyway. Eventually, Elizabeth Had to name Mary's son as her heir. Poor guy had been a hostage most of his life of the fierce Scottish barons that hadn't liked his mother. Cause she wasn't a King and warrior. Too French, too cultured, too Catholic. Shed had three husbands - one died when she was five or something, the next was murdered by the one that followed. And he died screaming mad in a Danish prison - he was a. Real character. Lord Bothwell. He had married a Danish aristocrat - promised to anyway, then ran out on her. When Marys armies were defeated by the barons, he ran out on her too. And his ship was blown off course.... To Denmark. And the brothers of the aristocratic lady he had offended. Scottish history. It's grim stuff.
