When it comes to characters and personalities, Princess Peach is the biggest offender out of the whole cast. This is the third game in a row with Peach being just as shallow as her modern self from the Super Mario games. She provided no importance and accomplished next to nothing to make her standout, it made me wonder why she's in the game. Luigi and Bowser were the only ones to get redemption for having at least some roles in the story and getting their personalities back. Even Mario who was basically mute has a personality. BOWSER'S ARMY has *more personality than Peach!!*
Four main characters for this series and Peach got shafted hard! Yeah, I get it. The devs wanted to surprise the players by bringing as much shock value. This could had been done better, they only made it easier on themselves by eliminating one of their main characters from the start.

I think it’s worth mentioning that Peach’s characterization in the original trilogy was because then-director Ryota Kawade had an emotional attachment to her character, which was what influenced a lot of decisions about the role she played.

I agree. I've been talking with others on Discord (not specifically SuperMarioT's discord) about this and I always ask the same thing:
Why are the unique Toad NPCs like Zess T. or Toodles bad NOW when they weren't before? They were fairly interesting, and had distinct enough designs to where they weren't just Toads in a costume but didn't look out of place.
I find it weird because now even the generic Toad NPCs can no longer have features like age, gender, etc. And must be uniform in design. They obviously cranked up the writing to try and make the characters memorable but... Damn, there is only so much you can DO with that unless you're Bobby... Bobby is special.
It really saddens me because the unique Toad NPCs, Piantas, Craws, Doogans, etc. gave areas like Toad Town and Rogueport so much variety and it felt natural. They are among my favorite parts of the first two Paper Mario's and now they're just _gone_

@@YuseiTheSynchroHero Honestly, some of my favorite toads from Origami King like Captain T oad, and Professor Toad can really be upgraded in the memorability factor if they just had creative features instead of a meer costume change. I don't really get why the RPG series got hit with such a baffling restriction of keeping toads and npcs generic, like I wanted to see characters in toad town like the master and that toad celebrity not 100s of color coded toads. Hell, I'll take Toadsworth at this point

The problem is that... There aren't other mainstays like Wario that could spice things up WITHOUT changing the core formula of the older Paper Mario games.
This whole situation has just ensured that this massive divide in the fanbase will forever stay that way.

Isn’t kinda sad how in only 10 months, the Mario RPGS are in a dire situation?
Alphadream goes bankrupt, and while Nintendo owns the rights, the fact that they haven’t been making a new game during that time and we don’t know if Nintendo took the employees in means we may not see it for a while. Meanwhile, Paper Mario is in a horrible position of devs not listening to criticism and higher ups apparently not letting any original NPCs be created, leading to a fanbase war between old fans and new fans.
At this point, the OG Mario RPG is the only thing that hasn’t been ruined or harmed in some form.

It’s downright disrespectful how he knows and hears our criticisms, but decides to say no anyway. I’m ok with sticking to your guns, and being confident with your product, but reading the interview is just sad, and disturbing of how tone deaf and out of touch it was. What I did like about Origami King:
    -Luigi has a somewhat role.
-Olly is the final boss instead of bowser.
    -Partners have personality
    -Battle System is somewhat decent
    -Soundtrack
    -Writing
    -Open connected world
    What I'm not huge on:
    -Generic Designs
    -Limitations/Lazy Excuses from Kensuke Tanabe.
    -No original characters
-Story is ok, but could be better.
-1K arms isn't a concept that was needed.
    -still the damn white outline
    -no original bosses
    -no EXP making battles useless
-Still too realistic with the Paper asthetic
I wouldn't say I hate OK, but I have a LOT of problems with it. Definitely did enjoy this game though, but not my KIND of Paper Mario.

This game could be so much more if they went more in depth with combat system. The game is built around the combat and it’s a shame it’s the weakest part of the game.
    • The combat needs different enemy types that challenge the player. All that the game has challenged the player to do after the line-up is choose either the hammer or jump. That’s just too basic.
    • Give Mario a variety of attacks besides jump and hammer. How about different, more powerful attacks that can target a bigger square or two entire rows?
    • Re-introduce different items besides your typical mushrooms and fire flowers. Add incentives for players to experiment with the items they get...such as cooking was used in the first 3.
    • All these improvements could add more variety to finding items during exploration.
    • Add XP, but let it be used for a skill tree system. Various bonuses you can unlock for battling.
TOK could be so much more if it embraced a more rewarding, engaging, and fulfilling battle system.

In my opinion, The Origami King is an ACTUAL improvement over Sticker Star and Color Splash, but there's still no reason to fight enemies when the game throws so much coins and confetti at you.

Just like I said in your Color Splash Review video, the problem with Paper Mario being an Action/Adventure instead of the charming RPG that worked and stablished the seriesis that it has no identity and charm of itself. It being an RPG made it stand out so much as what it was. It actually existed before Mario & Luigi did as well. Now it's just a Final Fantasy 2.0 in the sense that you aren't even sure if you should say it's an RPGs series or something else due to how drastically different the latter games are from the first two games. I could pretty much rank it with the main series games now, it shoves so much generic Toads and Bowser tropes to the point where it's just Super Mario Bros just under a paper skin, it's so bad how the series doesn't have anything unique or original nowadays. There's so much Mario tropes that override the games that it's no longer fun gameplay wise. All you get out of them is jokes, music and graphics. Yeah the writing is good, but what good is that if I can't have a series with no longer an identity? I played Paper Mario for its gameplay and for being so different, . I also still hate the overemphasis on the paper theme. It's makes the world feel artifitial and ugly, though visually Origami King looks the best. It's better than Sticker Star and Color Splash, but still worse than the first two games. The white outlines and two-frame animations of the game still bothers me as much as the overemphasis on the paper theme. At least I can say Oliva likeable, but not as Huey and the partners and original characters of previous games.
By the way, nice review man. :) I really enjoyed it.

I never comment on CZcams , but since I feel so compelled to share my experience with this game, I believe I can open a potential discussion and share my thoughts and feelings about the game. With that being said, I loved the Origami King despite its objective imperfections. You see, prior to the release of the game, I was watching a plethora of CZcams videos about the Paper Mario series as a whole. I got to learn how the series used to be phenomenal and how many people praised the first 2 games for setting the bar for what Mario’s story was like in an RPG format. Even Super Paper Mario, a game that was more mixed among the community, had RPG like elements thrown in to keep the same structure that the first 2 had. My first and only Paper Mario that I ever played prior to the Origami King was in fact Super Paper Mario. I unfortunately never got to beat the game since at that time, I was not used to the difficulty spike the game had compared to the “New” Super Mario Bros Wii game I had since I was only 9. Ever since then, I have not played any other game in the series except when my dad and I made a Paper Mario diorama after Sticker Star came out, a game that I did not know existed at the time. Fast forward to March 2020, I am watching CZcams documentaries about the Paper Mario series as a whole and am trying to gain an understanding of why the Paper Mario fanbase does not like Sticker Star and Color Splash. From March up until the trailer of Origami King in May, I’ve been periodically watching CZcams videos of people’s opinions on all the games in the series. So when the trailer shadow dropped , I saw that the reception for the game was mixed just like Super Paper Mario over a decade before. By the time the second trailer came, there was more of a positive reception, but there were still skeptics that wanted the full return to form that the first 2 games had. About another month would pass since then and I would decide to get the game and try to 100% the Origami King. Despite the weaknesses this game has, I absolutely enjoyed the game for what it had to offer. You summed it up perfectly in your review. You are absolutely correct, this game has its plethora of downfalls such as not having the RPG-like elements that the first trio of games had as well as not being able to control the partner characters like in those games. There is no denying or arguing about that however, the things that this game gets right are why I love the game for what it was trying to do. The first streamer was a good way to let the player explore every nook and cranny of the grassy plains and get used to the Vellumental/Legion of Stationary bosses that are in the game, the second streamer was a great change of scenery from the first streamer and captures the feel of a Japanese style amusement park while introducing the player to Bobby, the third streamer starts with Bobby sacrificing himself after the player goes to the Great Sea to obtain his fuse and gets to know his backstory. After this, the game silently transitions to a vast desert sandbox level where the player can traverse the landscape and meet up with the Professor and uncover an ancient temple which ends in a cool fight with the Hole Puncher boss, the fourth streamer is basically an homage to The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker where the player traverses the Great Sea and discovers many islands and finds treasure, and lastly the fifth streamer where the player goes on a quest to restore Bowser Jr. to his former self and save Bowser from the Origami infestation leading up to the final confrontation with King Olly. The Origami King is in no way a masterpiece since it has its objective downfalls, but the game is still a blast to play through and was worth the money. I fully completed the game and got to see the secret ending which was definitely worth seeing. This was a great review at highlighting the pros and cons of this game SuperMarioT, I genuinely hope that there are others out there that love this game despite its imperfections. Also I hope that for my first comment, I did not do so terribly at trying to put spelling/punctuation errors..anyways I am glad that I did research on this series as a whole otherwise, I would not have tried out the Origami King and appreciate the things it got right. Thanks again for reading this and God bless!

This is definitely gonna be a long comment, but I do want to say on what I feel about this game.
This game I honestly thought was pretty good, I wouldn’t say it’s amazing, but I like it.
I guess I’ll start with positives, the game of course looks beautiful and I think the paper aesthetic is alright, though I do feel it it’s been done to much and I do prefer the older aesthetic. Writing is still really funny and I did laugh out loud a few times. I still feel TTYD is best in overall writing since i feel it got the perfect balance in having jokes and also taking itself seriously and I think TOK goes a bit to far into the joke side, but still fantastic. The music I’d say is the best in the series yet, all I’ve done since the game came out is listen to is only CZcams. Now the overworld segments is where I truly enjoy this game, there are some places where it does feel like padding, but I personally barely care since it still manages to be enjoyable and fun. I love that the world is actually inner connected with each other which makes this place feel more like well... a world. I do wish that more areas were actually unique than just generic grass, desert, water and jungle. Then there’s the bosses which I actually do enjoy, mainly because I don’t mind the arrow approach to fighting them for me. I don’t feel the same about the normal battles which I’ll get that.
Now time for the bad which I got a lot to say. Mainly there’s 4 main points I want to say which I’ll get the lesser ones out first
    1. Characters. Okay I’ll say that the personality’s I really like, but that doesn’t excuse the generic toads and enemy’s you see most of the time. Most are just bland toads which the only thing that makes them unique is just a costume they have and even then most are pretty meh. I don’t get why this is a problem putting original characters into Paper Mario, there was zero issue putting original characters into Mario Odyssey, why is Paper Mario the end all be all when it comes to original characters?
    2. Story. This is definitely better than CS and SS’ story’s... not like that’s saying much, but it’s still an improvement. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s still kinda iffy a lot and Olly is such a bland villain and his motives is one of, if not the worst villain motive I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t do a whole lot to make it interesting aside from a few moments in the story. Not horrible, but still kinda just eh.
    3. Piss easy design. Okay now onto the stuff that bugs me. Like Color Splash this game is laughably easy and had barely any time where I felt like i was gonna die. In the 3 times I played it (yes I played it 3 times cause I wanted to give a honest opinion on this game) I only died twice in combat, one was to an instant death move, and another was from me not paying attention to the screen for a sec which made me die. That was about it, I barely used mushrooms since the game gives you plenty of free heals everywhere with benches and hearts so I didn’t even bother, and one play though I didn’t even use battle accessories and didn’t have a problem getting low on health.
    4. Combat
Yeah the battle system I didn’t like at all. I think it’s a neat idea and has potential if they did again (which they never will cause Tanabe is Tanabe) but they just don’t do enough with it. From start to finish it is basically they same with barely any changes to spice things up and after a while it gets very repetitive very fast. Partners since they only move automatically pretty much gets rid of almost everything that made me like them in the older games. It really feels like just a thing to throw a bone at older fans and nothing else. Also the difficulty on it at least to me is so inconsistent, like I’ve had some of the beginning areas stump me and it later breeze through the later areas with no problem. I’m okay with weapons being a thing, but they could have at least been more than just “this thing you already have, but slightly more powerful” there is barely any new stuff in the weapons and they don’t have that much strategy since it’s just you using the more powerful weapons on the enemy’s later in the game. And the topping on the cake, there’s no reason to fight yet again. Yeah you get coins when you fight, but coins are freaking everywhere in this game, and yeah you get confetti, but again it’s freaking everywhere as well. There was not a single time where I felt like I needed to fight to get something at all.
Well that was long, now like I said I do feel like this game does enough right for me to enjoy it, because when I’m not in the battle system I was actually having a lot of fun, but the stuff that is bad is BAD. And like what Arlo said with his Color Splash review, with simple basic changes would improve the quality drastically, add Star points to fighting and when you get 100, you can choose between max attack up, Max HP up, and max Confetti up and you’ve done it! Add in a hard mode where enemy’s have more health and do more damage as well as make hearts less plentiful and not make coins everywhere and add new features to every area to make the battle system more unique and fresh, these tiny changes would make the game SO much better!
    Overall I give it a 7.5/10 good
Nice visuals, great music, very fun areas to explore, not to bad bosses, but is bumped down by not much original characters, passable story, laughable difficulty that’ll make Kirby blush, and a very repetitive and bland battle system

Honestly, if partners worked like they did in the first two, and there was an actual exp system, I'd be willing to put this game on par with the first two. Also i'm glad you judge the game for what it is, and not what it isn't. There is a suprising amount of people that don't like this game because it's not like the originals, but you focus on the design flaws that are based on this game, along with sticker star and color splash. You don't bash on negative aspects because it's not like ttyd or 64, but because they are problems that need to be adressed. I respect that

I have nothing but respect for your review. Having played the first three games, it was a big let down that from Sticker Star to now lacks what made the original, TTYD, and SPM great. I never brought Sticker Star and Color Splash because of their story, no exp in battles, and the other flaws those games have, and I'm honestly will not buy The Origami King for the flaws you've mentioned in your review. Tanabe's statements of this game is also the motivation of why I will not support this game and probably the future Paper Mario games (though this subject can change one day). Good review overall. My request for your upcoming video of Tanabe's and his team statements is this: Go all out, and don't hold anything back.

    @brantchristy3490 Před 3 lety +22

Yeah, I don't think I'll be playing this one since that battle system sounds like it would be a huge turn-off for me.
My biggest disappointment with Color Splash was the fact that I would've considered it a good game if they got the battle system right. Despite characters, story, and everything else being done better in the first 3 games, I'd say I enjoyed most of CS more than most people. However, if everything is surrounded by tedious combat that halts the pace of the game every minute or so with no worthwhile reward, it makes everything else a lot harder to appreciate. Even when taking Paper Mario out of the equation, those battles sucked.
I was intrigued by the puzzle aspect of the battles in TOK, but after hearing what people have said about it, I feel like I'd enjoy those battles even less. I'd want to actively avoid battles as best as I can, but it wouldn't matter much anyway since several of them are mandatory and you get so punished for trying to flee. Plus, no amount of accessories can change the fact that boots and a hammer are how you attack almost every time and that combat is still too easy with no exclusive reward. I don't even get why these games still have a battle system anyway. If this game is focused on exploration and lacks RPG elements, why not just fight enemies in the overworld?
I didn't want to dislike the new Paper Mario games because, like I said, if only the battle system was fixed, I would enjoy these games so much more. I'd probably also be able to really appreciate the exploration aspect of TOK. However, after seeing that recent interview with Tanabe, I've lost faith in this series. They heard the fans, and yet they're still making the same mistakes. I don't dislike anyone who enjoys these games. If you like them, good for you. You have something to be happy about, but I will never understand why the series becoming this was a "better" direction. If they wanted to not make an RPG, they could've easily created their own spin-off instead of tarnishing one that was already not broken.
    Great video btw!

Not only has Miyamoto had less involvement in the Mario games, but he’s also outright said that he wants to allow his team more freedom to express creatively. This is why these original characters have been included in recent games. The idea that Intelligent Systems and Tanabe is still clinging on to what Miyamoto said eight years ago is confusing.

Keep in mind the original Paper Mario staff aren't there in the newer games.

In my experience, the first few hours is the game were a bit difficult to get through. There was a lot of tutorials, The environments felt a bit generic, and it began to feel like it was just going to be Color Splash 2.
But everything changed when The Blue Streamer attacked.
The music was beautiful, you got some great dialogue scenes with Olivia and Bobby, and it actually felt like I was playing one of the old Paper Mario games at some points.
The game, In my opinion, kept getting better and better with each area, the environments looked beautiful, and the paper aesthetic in the environments has been slightly less obvious.
Then there was the battle system. At first I was iffy about it because of the lack of experience. And in the prologue and red streamer, yeah, it wasn't the best.
But then, they started doing some clever things with the enemies and the puzzles you had to solve, like those folding guys in Bowser's Castle, or the Boo's that you have to memorize. And, since I did not cheat with the snapshot button, it felt really rewarding to get a successful lineup and get tons of coins.
And, if you don't like battling, You can avoid battles with no consequence, But there are many battles that you are forced to do in exchange.
The comedy is great in this game. Not on-the-nose and fourth-wall breaking like in Color Splash, But it's a lot more grounded here. The best jokes just come from the banter between our main characters. (Mario meeting Bobby on the tram comes to mind)
The bosses were fantastic. They're difficult, every death feels like it's your fault, and it feels very rewarding when you solve a puzzle and get to deal tons of damage. The bosses also shined in personality. Rubber Band id probably the best, both for her introductory cutscene, her suspenseful fight and great music, and the entire end of said fight.
And, to be honest, I cried multiple times during this journey. I know it's basically a tradition now to sacrifice (kill off) the main partner at the end of the game, but It felt justified here, and I like how she doesn't come back like in SS and CS, but it still ends on a good note.
In my opinion, Paper Mario: The Origami King is a fantastic game. Not as good as the original three (I mean it's slightly better them TTYD fight me), but it's definitely close. It gets better as it goes along, The music is great, the characters are enjoyable, the bosses are intense, and there's moments where you'll laugh and cry.
It's not the best, but it's a great one.
    7.5/10

18:16 Knowing that even though you mess up the puzzle you can still get by was such a huge relief to hear. the puzzle battle system was the biggest thing that scared me about this game from a accessibility reason because I'm legally blind, I was so afraid that they would severely punish you for screwing up even though the player has something he or she can't control. but I understand the criticism for the battles, it still sucks that there's no xp, they were so damn close with having permanent Jump/Hammer attacks and weapons. Re-watched this review of yours. I'm someone who HATES Sticker Star and Color Splash, and yet, this game managed to blow me away. I really liked the combat, found it fun and satisfying when lining the enemies up. The music is a godly bop, Olivia and Bobby are standout characters, the world and environments are interesting, and I loved some of the concepts and new mechanics it introduced. Finding the Toads was fun and I loved exploring the world. It was like a massive puzzle. And certain moments that left me smiling, like Mario disco dancing with a bunch of faceless Toads to lure Hole Punch out to groove.
Some issues I have with the game. Olly's motivations are pathetic, he comes off as a petty psychopath. The paper humor, I'm glad it's toned down and not every line of dialogue is some dumb paper pun, and the emphasis on paper is lessened. Two of the boss fights were pretty annoying, the Ice Vellumental and Boss Sumo Bro (worst boss in game for me).
Overall, this was my game of 2020. I'd give Origami King an 8/10. It wasn't the game I wanted, but it ended up being a game that I loved. I would recommend the game for it's music alone. I've been watching since 2016. Amazing, well thought out review, enjoyed hearing your opinions on the game!

I still haven't finished this game, I've just destroyed the yellow streamer.
While I'm on the much more positive side, as I'm loving this game so much, really liked Color Splash and had fun to a certain extent even with Sticker Star, but I agree with you especially for the first half of the video, while I can still see where you're coming from for the second one.
I personally didn't feel too much the slowness of the game, although it is there, you identified those moments quite well, because of the Switch's portable nature.
I'm picking this game up once per day or two days, usually play it for one to two hours, and then put it down. I think that made it feel for me much less like padding, but more like doing my daily exploration, discoveries and puzzle solution.
Everything you said about the battle system is true and I definitely agree, but I still have fun with it overall because of the puzzle element, unlike Color Splash and Sticker Star, where it wasn't there and it was just a flawed RPG battle system.
On the bosses, however, I disagree. So far it's where for me the puzzle element really shines and figuring out what you have to do to defeat the boss is fun in my opinion. I like finding the solution to the fight in battle, what I didn't like was how it was in the previous titles, where you had to find the "solution" before entering the fight if you even wanted to win it (Color Splash) or make it not excessively long (Sticker Star).
I still agree that this kind of battle system can be improved, even for people like me who overall enjoyed it, especially in the variety department, enemies in particular, but also attacks.
Also, I'd still like to know exactly enemies' HP, please, that was one of the very few things that Sticker Star actually did better compared to the sequels.
Other issues I had with Color Splash in particular have been solved: no rescue squads or things halting your progress, no Roshambo Temples with their luck mechanics and ludicrous prizes, no enemy cards to grind for, which is the biggest reason why I still haven't completed that game 100% and probably never will.
This game for me would be much a higher score, and I would recommend it to anyone, unless they really dislike one or more of the major mechanics, while Color Splash I'd recommend only to those who really liked the exploration, presentation and writing of this one, because the battle system is much more flawed. Sticker Star... I'd say play it only if they really, really like the exploration and are bored, it's the most underwhelming and frustrating of the three and the others improved on all its elements.

I enjoyed the review and do agree with your points (even though I do love the game), but there is one thing I disagreed on are the use of accesories. While yes, they do make the game marginally easier, i'd argue they are more of a neccesity later on than a crutch. In the late game, if you don't have guard accesories equipped, bosses can do massive amounts of damage even on block, especially when they do their ultimate attack. For example, ungarded and with no accessoires (this is earlier on btw), rubber bands final attack can do 60 damage, and these numbers can increase later on in game (not so much with scissors insta kill). Hell, even regular enemies can punish you hard if you mess up. So like I said, I feel accsories are less easy mode crutches and more like badges in the older titles, or y'know, just making the game more bearable later so you don't get overwhelmed by the massive amount of damage you can take. Sorry for the rant, still enjoyed it regardless.

That said however, I think that they would’ve saved a whole load of hassle if they just simply had the Star Points as another incentive to fight enemies, Coins for me served a very good purpose to fight them but that purpose was lost in Bowser’s Castle and the final area of the game, so I think that an EXP system or some sort, would’ve encouraged me even further to fight. Something that they could probably include if the older team comes back.
As for Olly, his motivation makes sense because he’s a toy. Think of Buzz Lightyear if he was still delusional and ignorant of his surroundings and took everything the wrong way. That’s what Olly does, he takes everything the wrong way.

I wonder if Origami King would go from "decent" to "very good" if:
    - coins in overworld were much rarer and battles gave you loads as well as more uses for coins (buying better attacks?)
    - the ring puzzles became much more difficult with longer timers and not just "rotate circle X around for win"

While I do think this game was good and best of the modern era (I legit had fun with it), I wouldn't say I disagree with you either. This whole fanbase has become nothing but a war of raging, nagging and whiny ancedotal heads, so honestly Idc if people want to act like nagules against me, but when it comes to the while outline and paper thing, I think a clear distinction needs to be made in terms of things being paper.
(I will say I do appreciate what TOK brought to the table in terms of dungeon design, they are honestly the best set of dungeons in the series)
Things like background props, environment design and world I don't mind the more modern cardboard like aesthetic because in TTYD things like trees, bushes and world could be seen as designed this way, but due to technology not being as advanced as it was back then we don't see it visually. But it does play around with it puzzle wise blowing things away with Flurrie, curses etc. However stuff like blowing things to reveal secrets isn't just there to show they are made of paper, its just to use the environment aesthetic to solve puzzles it had no impact on the narrative or dialogue.
(Also the fact there's even an argument about EXP just shows the divide even further)
I mean even if you want to argue the paper thing, there is a disconnect with how its been used. Example: In the OG trilogy whenever Mario/Co got hit with fire or sharp objects they just simply got injured or hurt, in newer games they'd incinerate into pieces or get ripped in half. Not to mention coming from SPM to SS and SS just referencing they are made of paper is very inconsistent. And even so its been overused at this point, especially when CS/TOK have much more jokes to offer.
I'm honestly tired and drained from this fanbase and the constant TTYD ancedotals and intellectual dishonesty going around, it just seems like everyone hates the game and has made it very hard to even like the game anymore. I also don't like how people use the product as a venting shield when its the fan's fault. Yes, people being defensive and showing something in your face constantly can be toxic and a huge turn off, and while you can be distant from a product, don't just vent out on the product itself.
TTYD does have issues to note, but with what I've seen you'd think people have unleashed their Angry German Kid and its insane. Its not even modern fans anymore, even classic fans hate TTYD. And I say this because that's what people are instantly going to associate and generalize this video with. And I honestly wouldn't give two fucks anymore if people nagged you about it SMT, but this hate has gotten ridiculous.
And also I find most of the fanbase hypocritical in that, they get onto one game for being acclaimed as perfect, yet its fine to treat every other game the same way, gatekeep their flaws when they preach about no game being perfect. Most importantly tho, due to all the news from the developer I have a hard time liking this new direction even more when he's actively dead set in just sinking everything into his own ideals further and further.

Overall I'd give the game a 6/10. The combat is alright, though boss fights focus WAY too much on the 1,000 Fold Arms and the Vellumentals. Olly's motivation is... something alright. As for the rest of the story the Legion of Stationary has fun personality and there are a lot of pretty great story beats. But it's just that in my eyes. A bunch of story beats. The presentation is top-notch however. I loved the dialogue, the environments were well done, and- of course- the music is A+ material. Easily the third best soundtrack in the series behind Sticker Star and Super Paper Mario. (My opinion of course) I think the worst part for me is that other than stocking up on coins to replenish your weapons and items and restore your confetti, battles have no purpose. And again too much emphasis is put into the special powers to the point that you HAVE to use them. Boss fights are pretty great spectacles because of this, but outside of a certain midboss in Bowser's Castle and the first half of the first area boss, there's very little chances to properly utilize battle items outside of replenishing your coin and confetti reserves through battle. EXP is something this game is sorely lacking and that, in my eyes, is an unavoidable fact. Overall I like it, but I do NOT see myself playing it again let alone 100%ing it anytime soon.

I think the part where Olivia essentially makes a wish to undo all the Origami that Olly has folded, bringing back everyone who got folded but also undoing her own existence, was really powerful. Even more powerful and even kinda dark when you realize that she doesn't come back. There's no resurrection for her. She's just gone. Sure theres an origami recreation of her at the very end but it's just a lifeless shell.
Not even Super Paper Mario, the game with the most darkest moments in the entire franchise, never went that far (a certain character late game dies but gets revived post game with zero explanation)

Late to the party, but I just beat the game a few minutes ago, and I really enjoyed it. I'm not much of a Paper Mario fan, as I've only played this one and Sticker Star (you can boo now), but this was genuinely a fun game with lots of great moments.
While I admit the battle system does hold the game back a bit, as there's really no reward for doing them, the ring system was creative. I do agree there's much more potential with it. The boss battles are really great too. On the surface, they're basic office supplies, but to me, they're so much more than that. They have great personalities, and very unique in the way they attack and how Mario can interact with them in battles.
While it does have its flaws and may not be the Paper Mario game everyone wants, it's still a great game with great visuals, music, story, and characters. I'm really glad I played it.

There is a tiny problem for completionists... actually, kind of a big one. See, in addition to the obvious stuff (finding Toads, collecting items, etc.), the save select screen will give you additional stamps under these three conditions:
    1. Never equipping a battle accessory.
    2. Never fleeing a battle.
    3. Never getting a Game Over.
However, at no time prior to completing these game-wide challenges will the game ever _tell_ you they exist! #3 is particularly egregious, as there's are cases that will instantly result in Game Over. I don't know how quitting and reloading the game works to circumvent the issue either, but if that invisible marker adds even one such "fail" to your tally? That file is toast!
Oh, also, kind of a spoiler?
    Look down here.
    Little further.
    Almost there...
Okay, this should be enough to avoid an accidental read.
Bobby, that amnesiac Bob-omb? He sacrifices himself by blowing up a boulder. In isolation, this is fine, but the first two Paper Marios set a precedent: _Bob-ombs can blow up without being harmed._
If there had been some justification here to differentiate Bobby from previous Bob-omb partners (they're "elites", or "organically formed", or _any_ justification), I would be far less critical. Heck, because the game dared to have a Mario character actually _die,_ I'd have been quite appreciative of the plot dynamism displayed. But because they _didn't even_ try _to explain it,_ the event pretends the other Paper Marios never happened. Quite the insult to anyone who adored them, in my eyes.

I'm going to say something scandalous but I actually think that this combat system was actually the best in the series, and I would love to see it expanded in the next game. I just didn't find the combat that fun and interesting in the first two games, it is pretty basic and better for challenge runs when you don't equip badges to absolutely steamroll the enemies and bosses, it was extrinsic due to the exp but doesn't have the great intrinsic fun of Origami Kings slide puzzles which constantly evolved over the game, and I was consistently excited to fight the bosses due to the way they switched the mechanics.

Even though I really like the game, there are TONS of shortcomings. When I first jumped into the gameplay, I loved the battle system. I thought it was clever and solving puzzles was fun. But after a while, I got tired of the ring system. It started to feel really repetitive, and there isn’t much reason to battle. The battle system in my eyes is okay. It’s not unbearably bad, and I do have a bit of fun in the battles, but they are boring and repetitive.

Okay, hear me out. My opinions on this game aren't exactly "mixed" and I don't mean any disrespect towards anyone.
Personally, I can't stand Origami King. I played it, beat it, and gave it a chance but everything about it was immeasurably disheartening. The combat made me grow numb with its unfun puzzles and rather samey jump/hammer attacks. I would have loved to have much more depth and interaction placed into the vellumental attacks, but they're simply automated and they're not an available option in the majority of circumstances. I actually gelled a lot more with Sticker Star's battles since they had a lot more player agency along with much greater varieties and methods of attack. I never felt accomplished after beating any regular battle or boss in TOK. This was a problem in Sticker Star, but it was more of a problem for me in Origami King, since this game has done more than SS or CS to motivate me to avoid battles. Battles left me feeling relieved that they were over, and actually feeling angry that the devs actually thought that the slide puzzles were a fun gimmick.
As for the story in TOK, it left me with a feeling of futility. With emotional moments like Bobby's, I was left feeling that this story was going to build up to a shocking emotional payoff, but it just never builds. In fact, it does the opposite. I spent time wondering when the next climactic moment would be, only to reach the end and realize that the entire spark that started the conflict is petty nonsense that renders the emotional moments purposeless. Top that off with a final boss that only supplied me with a repeat of ALL worst that the combat had to offer, and the ending was just a shitshow that drags the whole story down with it. Sticker Star essentially had no story, but it was better than this. In my mind, it's better to have little to no story than to have a story that fails to emotionally pay off in every single way.
With exploration, there are a lot of very open areas that are hampered by still having a very linear feel with very specific objectives. If I decided to take a break from the story and explore though, I found that the rewards for exploring weren't compelling. Rather than rewards being useful for the gameplay, they only serve to fill out a checklist, the only exception being toads, but they only serve to further automate a combat system that's already too automated. Sticker Star actually did exploration rewards a lot better by giving the player stickers and 'things' that actually serve to change up the gameplay and combat.
You might be able to tell from my opinions that I prefer Sticker Star to Origami King in most regards. That's an extremely disheartening statement for me to make, because not only do I feel that Nintendo has strayed from the story and gameplay depth that made Paper Mario great, but have also made their new formula worse every time they've tried to improve it. Sticker Star may have an inherently broken combat system, but it was never tedious. To me, the subsequent games have tried their very best to not only keep the flawed combat, but to also add more tedium every time. Color Splash added its gimmick of painting and flicking the cards, making battles take an unnecessarily long time, while Origami King added tedious puzzles that are super inconsistent in their difficulty. I understand that the team has needless restrictions when it comes to story and characters that Nintendo needs to seriously reconsider, but what's stopping them from making a fun and rewarding gameplay system? I have absolutely no clue. People passionately praise TOK now, but I could easily see those opinions souring like milk. While I'm happy for those who enjoy TOK, I don't like the fact that too much praise for this game could prompt Nintendo and Intelligent Systems to quadruple down on a formula that was stale and irredeemable from its inception.
How uncommon is the opinion, "Sticker Star > Origami King"?

I must be the only one who probably likes this game more than the majority do, but I do want to provide my own claims to it, seeing how if I didn't, people would just be confused on what I'm saying.
As a guy who first played TTYD as his first Paper Mario game, it definitely set a precedent in what I would think would form the rest of the series (admittedly it wasn't until years later where I played the first game, but I willingly stand by it seeing how it can be viewed as a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG and that's what I would say should have been how the series was handled). TTYD truly felt special compared to other Mario games to me, seeing how it was willing to be a game with the focus entirely based around a grand adventure set in some type of paper world. I won't lie when I say the world itself in TTYD was a joy to wander through and discover all the many things lying throughout it. And then come by Super Paper Mario, I was at least happy in the fact that it was continuing to at least stay true to the past three games what with it establishing a story you would NEVER expect from a Mario game that came out in 2007, but overall, it was the best story I've seen from the franchise, what with it filled with moments that made me continue playing to see how the whole thing unfolds.
And then came Sticker Star... boy oh boy, I wish I WASN'T hyped up for this one. Seeing what appeared to be a return to form for the series considering Super went for a different gameplay style, I had high hopes for it being a game that I would constantly just keep awaiting for. But alas, 2012 me was so naive, and once I finally got my hands on it, I couldn't help but get the strange feeling that everything felt... wrong. This isn't what I remember Paper Mario for; this was an attempt to put out a spin-off title that didn't exude amazing amounts of effort that overall clouds over what I saw the series as originally. And then came Color Splash, which I admittedly decided I should at least give a chance anyways if only because I had thought, "Well, it may be similar to Sticker Star, but I can at least hope it tries to fix the flaws the previous game had." And while my assumption was more or less right, I still couldn't help feel that Color Splash was still limited to where it WANTED to be great, but with limitations in place, it kind of just led me to believe we couldn't get another Paper Mario game that at least attempted to do what the first three games were known for.
Now naturally speaking, it's been 4 years since Color Splash came out, and now with The Origami King out, it's odd to note how compared to the previous two games, Origami King felt... special to me. 2020 is admittedly a pretty bad year all things considered, and yet Nintendo was still willing to put out stuff to appease fans. Even if Origami King didn't do everything that I wanted to see, it was honestly a BIG leap from what I saw from the previous two games. Yeah, EXP is gone again, but to me, that feels like something to be expected coming from any newer games in the series. And the whole idea of implementing paper mechanics in the games is definitely something I wish they DIDN'T have to do since it really feels like they're pushing that over what the first three games had... worlds that were only aesthetically made of paper and never had said paper be any kind of mechanic or plot element in the games. Regardless, I still gave Origami King a chance (though I did buy it digitally so that pretty much means I can't really get a refund for it), and I was honestly quite shocked at how many genuinely great moments there were. Sure, it starts off slow, but then again, most games often tend to start out slow before really opening the blinds and letting people be immersed with them. And to me, Origami King's highs pretty much overshadowed any lows I had regarding the game where... it feels so weird to say this... it actually became my third favorite out of the six games, pushing Super into 4th. Super still had the better story, don't get me wrong, but Origami King was willing to at least give us more moments that you couldn't help feel emotional over (something I admit that Sticker Star and Color Splash were quite lacking in). But man, with what it did, it's going to be a game I'll possibly remember for years now at this point.
But to close off this whole long spiel, what would I like to see from the potential 7th game in the series is if they can FINALLY pull the limitations that were set in place with Sticker Star. These limitations have caused the series to stagnate into a completely different series in my eyes that makes me say this SHOULD have been completely separate from the first three. Maybe if enough fans would band to give together (whilst being civil about it, I should make that a clear clarification), we should all write a letter going out to the devs at Intelligent Systems telling us why we enjoyed the games in the first whilst also saying that the limitations put in place were completely unnecessary. It'd be a whole lot like that letter people wrote to Sakurai thanking him for putting King K. Rool in Smash, y'know? Whether or not the devs open their eyes to all the criticisms we've given to these three recent games is debatable, but if what Origami King did could be considered a baby step for the series growing back into what we remember it as, I'd say we should be happy if they do realize the complaints from the consumers really does mean a whole lot. I mean hey, we're getting Crash 4 this year, AND it's practically a huge comeback to what those fans remember back when they played the original Naughty Dog trilogy. If Crash could make a big comeback like that, then so can Paper Mario. #PaperWasNeverAPlotElement

Oh Boy, this was a long comment to type but I will say this.
But for everyone and Paper Mario fans
I'll respect your opinion on not liking or being mixed on Paper Mario The Origami King besides we all have different tastes in video games and that it's best to respect other people's opinions too we are all entitled to have opinions on video games, negative or positive.
I'm not a fan of Modern Paper Mario, I'm not a fan of Old Paper Mario. I'm a fan of Paper Mario as a series.
Now I never grew up with the last two Paper Mario games but I did play Super Paper Mario as a kid which was my first introduction to Paper Mario getting me hooked on the series/franchise and I'm glad to play it on my Nintendo Wii so many great memories playing it.
I would say this I really enjoy and love playing Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash and I'm happy to give these two games a chance because of trying new things in the Paper Mario series/franchise sure I understand why OG Paper Mario fans want to go back to the original battle system and story heck I play Paper Mario 64 on the Wii U Virtual Console great game and a perfect way to start a spinoff/franchise but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion.
I think Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash version of EXP It’s more so a feeling of progression and self-growth more than lack of EXP. While yes Sticker Star and Color Splash lack EXP, it still has Mario grow by getting more HP Hearts, Coins, Secret Doors, and Extra Book Pages to store more stickers and for Color Splash it's the Mini Hammers to upgrade your Paint Storage and you get more powerful battle cards as you go on with the story even getting an HP Heart at the end of the Chapter/Big Paint Star which I thought was pretty cool and unique in my opinion.
Now Paper Mario The Origami King version of EXP is confetti to fill your confetti bag to patch the Not-Bottomless Holes which is like Color Splash colorless spots which is pretty good, coins to buy badges/accessories and better weapons to help you in combat you can even use coins to spend on the battle timer to gain more time also you can use coins to call in Toads to cheer/help you in battle, exploring the world to find hidden secrets and toads, HP Hearts to make Mario stronger and many more that I won't spoil for everyone. I myself really enjoy the self-growth and progression EXP a lot in The Origami King and the battles are super fun and great even the bosses battle are super unique, creative, and challenging and I love it a lot in my opinion.
I enjoy and love every partner in Paper Mario from Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, Lakilester, Tippi, The Pixls, Kersti, Huey, and finally Olivia each having unique and cute personalities to them. (I would be happy to say the other partners' names In Origami King but that would be spoiling Paper Mario The Origami King sorry everyone)
The partners in Paper Mario The Origami King are so fun and watching them act/fight in combat are so great to see and sometimes it's best and learned to say goodbye to the partners we made on our journey/adventure but the memories we made with them are worth remembering.
I'm not a big fan of post-game stuff in video games but I can understand that for people who like doing post-game stuff and I'm fine with Paper Mario The Origami King showing you a secret cutscene at the end and mention your 100% achievement also giving you a gold star in your profile pretty good way to end a great game in my opinion.
Of course, not all the Paper Mario games weren't perfect, nothing is perfect, but all of them were still fun and exciting also cool to play all the way through.
I don't mind people calling Paper Mario The Origami King "Sticker Star 3" or "Color Splash 2" because I really had a great and fun time playing Sticker Star and Color Splash from beginning to end.
I'm super glad to finally play Paper Mario The Origami King on my Nintendo Switch super great game from beginning to end also 100% it too anyway my rating for Paper Mario The Origami King is a 9/10 from adding so many new things, fun and great battles/boss battles, puzzles, and creative bosses even the story is great and I would highly recommend this to fans of Paper Mario Sticker Star and Paper Mario Color Splash in my humble opinion.
I'm really glad to play Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario Sticker Star, Paper Mario Color Splash, and now finally Paper Mario The Origami King, and I would be happy to put Paper Mario The Origami King on my top 10 games of 2020.
I'm not interested in getting Bug Fables because that's not my cup of tea sorry everyone again.
At the end of the day, we can all agreed that Paper Mario is a great and fun series/franchise that everyone can enjoy old and new that's the true magic of Mario games anyway peace everyone.

TTYD didn't do "The same thing" as 64. It introduced several new mechanics in battle that weren't in 64, and the story was completely different.
No game franchise in existence has gotten stale after only 2 entries. Every game after SPM tries less new or interesting things to stand out than TTYD did from 64.

I just jotted down notes while watching so it won't be the best written but here are some review criticisms:
Making things seem worse than they are (Backtracking in the desert really isn't that bad, you seem to be exaggerating some points. Example: Saying you have to go to the desert, then to the fire vellumental temple, then back to the desert. That's all one trip, but you make it sound like it's super long for the point's sake. I'm also surprised you didn't bring up the great sea when talking about backtracking, but you may have just wanted to give one example.)
Wanting things to be over quickly
(Shy guys finish last being "padding" is partially true. It doesn't make sense that there's a game show in a random cave, and it does interrupt the journey, but it's like calling the peach segments, like the quiz in 64, padding. Content does not = padding.)
    Skipping over the battle's strategy
(Says jumps and hammers are only if they're flying or spiked, but this game actually has one of the best reasons to use the hammers. It overlaps with the puzzle system perfectly and makes the hammer much more useful than in any other paper mario game.)
    Battles not being worth anything
(I get there's not really a tangible reward like xp, but battles are a fast way to get coins and confetti, and on subsequent playthroughs I treated them like an obstacle if my bag was full, or a way to refill my confetti.)
    Fleeing not working/mandatory battles
(I get if you find battles boring, but there's nothing wrong with it making you fight enemies. One of my big problems with ss and cs and even tok to an extent are that fleeing removes the enemy and doesn't make you lose coins. Tok having a low flee rate isn't a problem imo because it fixes the enemy removal problem, and punishes you for entering a battle you don't want to fight, and gives incentive to avoid it in the overworld.)
Removing 3.5 points for what's mainly the battles
(I have no problems with liking the old games, or comparing the new ones to them, but the 3 main problems in the review were about olly, the humor/paper and battles. Aside from the battles, which were actually fun imo, the game doesn't have that many flaws, and doesn't deserve a "mixed" rating. That being said I could care less if you only kinda liked this game because it's all subjective.)
Anyway I respect your opinion, these are just my thoughts as a fan of all the games.

In the case of ToK, whether it's because it isn't building upon the original games or because of its own heavy flaws, people have EVERY right to critic the game however they desire.

I.. really don't agree with 25:25 . The only Boss who actually does that is the Blue Streamer's boss and the first boss. All the others have basically 2 phases, sort of. Some are just based around waiting for the right moment, which are the worse 2 bosses, especially the yellow streamer first boss.
So yeah, I don't really get what you meant there :p

    • @SuperMarioT
      @SuperMarioT  Před 3 lety

      Spoiler for the bosses:

The Rubber Band amounts to you approaching & using the ARMS to get rid of the rubber bands on the body the entire time only worrying about the next circle they put you in, Hole Punch makes you jump on it & wait until it charges a super attack for the Earth Vellumental so it flips over and then you either jump or Arms again, rinse and repeat, Tape makes you break each corner and then do nothing but arms to pull the tape (if not Fire Vellu), you just have to worry about the tape sticking vertical & horizontal spaces which is probably the best gimmick of the bosses imo, the scissors makes you focus on the handles and then is regular battling until the superattack, which needs the Ice Vellu and then the Arms, the Stapler is largely jumping and wait until it's out of staplers to use the Arms on the inside. Earth Vellu is just hit the open spots & then Arms, Fire is watch out and soak the feathers until he's on the ground for the Arms, Sumo Bro is get the spaces back and use either Earth or Fire Vellu & they die quick, Handaconda, despite my favorite, is hammer from a distance that transitions to a rock paper scissors game, which does use the Arms in a little more trial-&-error fashion with most of the plays being telegraphed from the hand. The final boss is an almost complete copy paste of the vellumentals, which then transitions to mashing on Bowser's moving side of the circle which leads to a glorified quick time event basically.
A majority of the bosses require some specific pattern of approach & attack that doesn't inhibit a lot of strategy or variety, even with making deliberate puzzle layouts and expansions to make the walkway elaborate. You're repeating them more often than not through your turns, there's little imagination or creativity outside the bosses gimmicks and they all largely amount to the same end goal of attack; either Vellumental or 1000-Fold Arms, more often the latter.

I'll say here what I said elsewhere only slightly modified.
"I've come to a different conclusion you have, and that this is the final nail in the coffin of the series.
The combat is the worst it has ever been in the series, and that is saying something considering Stinker Star exists. The "weapons" were just streamlined Stickers, you one shot 90% of the enemies. The few times you do fail you can still block most of the damage unless it is a boss. The hints aren't even hints about what to do with the puzzle part, which was the only tricky part of any fight. They are all about the enemies themselves every time I used the function. Even then it was usually obvious stuff that you could literally see just by looking at what you are fighting. The Boos disappear? Well, duh, they are ghosts and aren't on the screen anymore. Flying enemies can't be reached by the normal hammer, again, duh.
90% of the humor was paper based puns. There are only three moments I remember as being legitimately funny, when Olivia pulled out the pom poms for using the turtle ability, the disco dance scene, and the stage play part where they were doing a parody of West Side Story.
I will admit the world design was nice except for the obsession with making everything paper. I dislike Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Yoshi's Wooly World for the same reason. The new interesting areas and level design are literally the only thing I truly think was a good thing about this game. They have one awesome thing about this game and it is still tainted by the obsession with paper that started with Stinker Star.
For every one thing that was a "we are listening" moment, another 10 come along as a slap in the face.
"We hear you, you want partners, but... they can't be controlled by you, don't enter most dungeons, fail their attacks 90% of the time, and are generic characters that already exist(Bowser, Kamek, Bowser Jr., etc.)
"You want a big world to explore? Sure, but now all you do is go around filling in holes in , and unfolding Toads. However everything is obsessed with, and made of paper and we are going to be reminding you of every second, and in every dialogue portion of the game."
"You want more story? Sure, but now every actual major point is just going to remind you of how the original aspects of the series you loved is never coming back. We don't care about retconning some of our best characters in the series' history."
"You want more "strategic" "turn" based combat? Sure, but it mostly involves literally turning a giant board around so you can kill everything in one hit. It also has even more dumbed down mechanics thrown in so there is no real chance of losing and having to try again. You can also just pay some of the countless coins we constantly throw your way to just be given the answer for free."
"You guys hated the "things" stickers and item? Well now they are the bosses you fight, so now you can take your frustration at us out on them!"
"You want badges? Well, we have accessories now. They are like the same thing only instead of 100+ with many creative options there are now 15 with only 6 of those being in the category that might be creative".
I wanted to like this game, I wanted it to be the next Super Paper Mario. A game that while different from TTYD was still an excellent game in its own right. I did not get that from this game. If you did, good for you I guess.
I will not be giving Nintendo another cent for this series until they return to the old style, or at least do an HD remaster of the good games in the series. Super Paper Mario had the best story, so I'd want that one too. I also know people will just try and deflect my criticism by saying I can't like a game if it was different from TTYD.
I guess for now all I can do is hope Bug Fables is successful enough to warrant as many sequels as possible."
I really don't like "Bobby" aka Bob-omb #,9,432,975, and even Olivia was only likable a small portion of my play time. Bobby is now my least liked character in Mario history as his last scene was just a big middle finger to the story of the past games. Basically nothing like Bobbery could have happened, and is now retconned. He was cowardly, and worse than useless since he was detrimental to my enjoyment of the game as a whole.
