My only problem with Flower Fields is the bee enemies and the backtracking. That’s about it. I love the boss and the new partner, not to mention it has the best XP farm in the game with the shiny Dayzee.

My ranking in terms of enjoyability on my first playthrough from best to worst: 3, 6, 2, 7, 4, 1, 8, 5
Chapter 5 just didn't do it for me, and that is mostly for personal reasons. I don't typically enjoy jungle settings, the music was okay, the section where you had to find the yoshi kids was just plain annoying.
Chapter 8 and 1 for the same reason as in the video.
Chapter 4 was really nice, but its only low because the other ones are better.
Navigating around chapter 7 was tedious in some areas, but the boss really compensated for that.
Chapter 2 had a good balance between normal exploration and handling matters to do with reaching the sand temple.
Chapter 6 had some nice storytelling, and I personally liked the setting.
Chapter 3 had the best overall mood and it is still my favorite to this day. You start by learning about the importance of goombario and how he helps navigate you through the forest. Then you traverse a mysterious mansion which had great puzzles, and it gave me the feeling that I was unwanted in the mansion through things like the chests that spawn ghosts, the shopkeeper who doesnt want to sell you anything. Next, the setting shifts dramatically, and suddenly, you are allied with the ghosts to achieve a greater goal. At this point, I was solely thinking about saving the ghosts from tubba blubba and had completely forgotten that I was helping Bow so that I could save the star spirit.

My overall ranking of the chapters would be as such:
8th: Chapter 7 - I don’t outright hate this chapter. I just feel like not too much happens, and as a whole, the chapter just feels... linear. The music is powerful in feeling, and I definitely think that this is worthy of being... penultimate.
7th: Chapter 1 - This chapter would be in last, had it not been for the Koopa Bros, the pretty good music, and the lore behind them. The Koopa Bros were tired of living in Koopa Village, so they reunited to a fortress they would soon call theirs. Many Bob-Ombs lived throughout this fortress, and the Koopa Bros were welcomed. However, Kammy Koopa had brainwashed them into becoming loyal servants of Bowser. And as such, the Koopa Bros took full control of the fortress... Other than that, it’s a generic grassland.
6th: Chapter 2 - This is the start of the point where I have no problems with any chapters in particular. I think the whole idea of Parakarry being a way to encourage exploration is excellent, and would very easily do a superb job of making sure the player isn’t just moving in a straight line the entire time. Also, the desert portion is also a barren landscape done right. There’s always danger at every turn, and there’s no knowing what comes next...unless you just have a map. There’s only one minor nitpick I have. HOW DID TUTANKOOPA EVEN INVADE THE RUINS WHEN THEY ARE UNDER THE GROUND?!?!
5th: Chapter 3 - This chapter is probably the most...weird of the bunch. This time, the allies have the Star Spirit, but you have a big roadblock to get past first. However, Tubba Blubba, once you learn his story, is a character worth sympathizing for. However this just makes the boos look like jerks in the end...if anything, they deserve getting eaten!
4th: Chapter 4 - Seeing your main hub having a problem is a fresh change of pace. The idea of Shy Guys causing calamity is a nice, creative way to change the pace. And just knowing that they’re hiding in a toy box is incredibly creative.
3rd: Chapter 8 - First of all, the build up. I think the way this chapter builds up to the final boss is superb. The music slowly gets more and more intense as you go deeper into the castle, and it’s excellent. It really does feel like a true finale, and the music helps it out amazingly. Second of all, everything in the castle feels final. Three final tests of raw skill. Many enemies that we’ve seen, just not encountered yet. Each and every thing in this castle feels like it belongs in a true finale.
2nd: Chapter 5 - The way Chapter 5 is structured in terms of homage to Yoshi’s Island is spectacular. After the Yoshis’ service to Mario, Mario gives back a proper reward. Instead of Yoshi saving the babies, Mario does. He meets up with Raphael the Raven, who decided to watch over the Yoshis as a powerful deity. And Mt. Lavalava definitely feels powerful in presence.
1st: Chapter 6 - And, as such, my favorite chapter of the original Paper Mario is chapter 6 - wait, what? Oh, you clicked off. Welp, for those still here, I absolutely love how heroic Chapter 6 makes you feel. The stakes are high, first of all. If Mario doesn’t stop Huff N Puff, this field of harmless, fun-loving flowers will wilt and die. And it pays off massively when you destroy the source of this madness; the Puff Puff Machine. You feel so heroic seeing the flowers erupt with joy and happiness, and you feel so powerful and heroic. That, for me, is the real end of the chapter. Obviously you take the fight to Huff N Puff and beat him up to obtain the Star Spirit, but the real ending is when the Puff Puff Machine is destroyed.

This is a pretty impressively in depth comment! Seems we're almost polar opposites on a lot of placements, but I am glad to see you liked chapter 6. Excellent list, Alex! Paper Mario is among my top 10 favorite games of all time, and it's one of the few games I can think of that manages to maintain a pretty consistent level of quality across each of its levels (chapters, in this case). The fact that I've seen just about every possible ranking combination for the chapters (honestly, I'm not exaggerating very much here) from posts on Reddit and other sites demonstrates just how difficult these chapters are to rank, as none of them are exactly run away favorites or least favorites among the fanbase. I just replayed this game again, so here's my personal ranking (note that I do like all of the chapters in this game):
    8. Chapter 1: Storming Koopa Bros. Fortress --> I agree with your arguments on this chapter. It's not bad, but it's definitely the most generic chapter in the game. So many Mario games have kicked off their adventures with grassland worlds (or chapters), and this one definitely doesn't buck the trend that much. Still, I do think it's a fairly well-designed introductory chapter, even if it doesn't push the envelope as much as those that succeed it.
    7. Chapter 4: Trials in the Toy Box --> Seeing as this is the most original and creative setting for a chapter in the entire game, it's a shame I didn't enjoy it as much as most of the others. The Toy Box is an awesome location, reminding me heavily of the "It's A Small World" Ride, and the Shy Guys make for surprisingly versatile enemies (even if some of the versions can dish out annoying attacks). What drags this chapter down for me is the back-tracking, which in my opinion is the most egregious out of any section of this game. Having to backtrack out of the Toy Box and return to Toad Town to return the stolen items gets tedious very quickly, and the fact that you have to do this at multiple stations makes it worse for me. While you can avoid back-tracking from the third station if you're already familiar with the correct order to hit the boxes, this only benefits those who have both played the game before and remember the combination (or looked it up). Don't get me wrong. I still find this chapter fun and enjoy exploring the different stations, but the back-tracking prevents me from ranking it any higher.
    6. Chapter 6: Dark Days in Flower Fields --> From what I've seen, this is probably the least favorite chapter overall from the fanbase, although it's also a favorite of many other fans. I lean more towards the latter but still prefer it over chapters 1 and 4. Having to rescue the flowers from wilting is one of the more unique chapter premises in the game, and the setting is both vibrant and expansive. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same fault as Trials in the Toy Box: back-tracking. Even if you know the correct order to take each path, you will still have to go back and forth through most of the branching paths twice, and the narrow pathways and irritating enemies (particularly, the bees and amazy dayzees) can make this a bit of a chore. Overall, though, this doesn't bother me as much as Ch. 4's backtracking, and I like the different puzzles and obstacles you need to overcome on the diverging paths. I like this chapter more than a lot of fans seem to, but I still don't consider it one of the better ones.
    5. Chapter 8: A Star-Powered Showdown --> This is the chapter placement that differs the most between our two lists, but it still doesn't quite make the top half for me. I agree that Watt is practically the only useful party member to use in combat because of the high enemy defense, and this diminishes the amount of experimentation permitted in this chapter and makes a lot of the battles a bit more monotonous. However, I do appreciate the various puzzles (from the lava chambers and the dark cavern to the water puzzle sections and bomb-switch rooms), as it tests you on what you've learned in previous chapters. All of the party members (aside from Goombario, of course) are necessary to pass the various obstacles blocking your way, and I like how it requires each of them to play a part in the climactic journey through the castle. I also like the torchlight puzzle (where the torch placements clue you in to which pathways to take), as it is a subtle challenge that forces you to pay attention to your surroundings to progress, and, although the bullet-bill barrages aren't anything special, at least they're not a hassle to deal with. The finale suffers from being primarily located in one long dungeon and lacking a town to visit and explore (aside from Star Haven), but I do think it still manages to outpace most other JRPG final dungeons I've played through and does a great job of building up the tension and anticipation for the ultimate showdown with Bowser. It may not be one of my absolute favorite chapters in Paper Mario, but it still stands among my personal favorite final levels in any game.
    4. Chapter 5: Hot Hot Times on Lavalava Island --> As a huge fan of Yoshi's Island, I can't help but appreciate this brilliant loveletter to that game. From the music in Yoshi Village to the presence of Raphael the Raven, there are plenty of easter eggs on display for fans of the SNES platformer. Anyway, I love the variety on display here, and getting to explore both Jade Jungle and Mt. Lavalava is a lot of fun. Rescuing the Yoshi kids is not as bad as I remembered, and it honestly doesn't require too much back-tracking, as long as you're thorough about searching Jade Jungle. Mt. Lavalava is a pretty good dungeon (although there are several others in this game that I prefer), and it offers some clever puzzles and platforming situations without overstaying its welcome. Also, Kolorado never ceases to be entertaining with his perfect mixture of utter incompetence and insurmountable self-confidence.
    3. Chapter 2: The Mystery of Dry, Dry Ruins --> A desert is admittedly not a very creative setting for a Mario chapter (especially, since so many second worlds in Mario games use this aesthetic), and desert levels tend to be rather hit or miss in the Mario series in my opinion. That said, this chapter is a masterpiece of game design and a huge step-up from Storming Koopa Bros. Fortress. It's definitely the most expansive chapter in the game (as you pointed out), and traversing Mt. Rugged, Dry Dry Desert, Dry Dry Outpost, and Dry Dry Ruins is an unforgettable adventure. While it does have a bit of back-tracking here and there (like collecting the letters for Parakarry), it never becomes tedious or annoying, and I think the chapter moves along at a pretty nice clip. The desert, itself, isn't one of my favorite parts of the chapter, as most of the sections hold nothing of particular interest, but I don't have any major qualms with it, either. Dry Dry Ruins is easily my second favorite dungeon in the game, and it's the cherry on top of this excellent chapter in my opinion.
    2. Chapter 3: The "Invincible" Tubba Blubba --> I think this chapter may have the most unique premise out of any of them in the game. Instead of simply rescuing another Star Spirit from Bowser's minion, you're practically extorted into defeating said minion by your new partner (who is both one of the most useful in the game and the most morally ambiguous), in exchange for the Star Spirit's release. I also appreciate how varied the gameplay is here. While Forever Forest and Gusty Gulch are fairly standard areas with enemies to fight (aside from the former's Lost Woods-like gimmick), Boo's Mansion is purely puzzle-focused and Tubba Blubba Castle is more of a stealth mission. I like this variety and feel that it adds more nuance to the gameplay. I do agree that the Spikes can be overpowered for this point in the game and that the drones can be annoying, but this can be mitigated somewhat by both spin-dashing to outpace these foes and turning invisible more frequently to escape them. The Tubba Blubba chase sequence is fun, even if you can leave him in the dust with spin-dashes, and I also like the revelation that he only turned to Bowser for power because Lady Bow and her followers had been tormenting him. I think this chapter has some of the best pacing in the game, and it's easily my second favorite, overall.
    1. Chapter 7: A Star Spirit on Ice --> Ranking these chapters took quite a bit of thought on my part, but there was no question in my mind which one would reign supreme. This is not only my favorite chapter in this game but my favorite snow / ice level in video game history (even above the likes of Phendrana Drifts, Snowpeak Ruins, and Forsaken Castle Cainhurst). From the murder mystery spoof in Shiver City and visiting Starborn Valley to scaling Shiver Mountain and exploring the Crystal Palace, I love every minute of this chapter. The Crystal Palace, in particular, is my favorite section of the entire game, as well as my favorite dungeon. The eerie music, clever level design, shenanigans of the Duplighosts, creative puzzles, and battle with the Crystal King are all top-notch. To me, this chapter is Paper Mario running on full cylinders, and it's easily my favorite level in any Mario game.
Anyway, that's my list! Thanks for the great video, Alex! I always enjoy your and Jack's content!

    6. Chapter 2 (I have no issues with this chapter, I just feel like others are just even better. Deserts aren't my favorite types of climates though Egyptian culture references can be fascinating. Also, I hate deserts IRL because I'm so naturally warm blooded. Irrelevant to my ranking of Paper Mario Chapters sure, but I thought it's worth sharing. Plus the boss is like really underrated)
    5. Chapter 4 (This design is awesome and I love Watt as a partner/character, and I think General Guy was actually really cool)
    4. Chapter 6 (Probably an underrated mystery chapter; there is backtracking and getting lost, but there is a lot of things that make up for that)
    3. Chapter 3 (Tubba Blubba and all those Boos are awesome!)
    2. Chapter 5 (Again, I love Island sceneries and it really proves Paper Mario's canon to all the Mario games. The Yoshi chief is implied to have known Mario since he was just as baby as was Raphael the Raven's appearance. He remembers being turned into a constellation and then returning back into a Raven)

    1. Chapter 3
Best chapter and has the most variety. Great music and atmosphere. Also best villain.
    2. Chapter 8
I’m biased because I love long drawn out final dungeons in RPGs. Also best music in the game by far with the most epic bowser finale of any mario game.
    3. Chapter 7
One of the more difficult chapters in the game. Has the best towns and very memorable dungeon.
    4. Chapter 5
I love the Yoshi island theming of this chapter. The boss also looks cool 😎
    5. Chapter 2
I didn’t like desert worlds when I was younger, but they’ve grown on me. I find that this chapter is really enjoyable these days. The desert is fun to explore and the dungeon is one of the best in the series.
    6. Chapter 1
Yes it’s generic, but I have a lot of nostalgia for this chapter. Also getting 2 partners is a plus.
    7. Chapter 6
This chapter is the most beautiful in terms of visuals and music once you destroy the Puff Puff machine. Unfortunately most of the chapter is spent when it’s cloudy, making it a bit too drab for me
    8. Chapter 4

    1. Ch3. Very unique and memorable. Hyper clefts aren't bad. We have bomb and power bomb, quake hammer, items, power smash, dizzy attack to stun in the overworld. There are plenty of ways to deal with the defense.
    2. Ch4. Not much logic to this one. I just loved the vibe of the toy box and the mayhem in toad town. Rationally deserves to be lower.
3-6. Ch2, 5, 6, 7 are all very close. I enjoy chapter 2 fully. Chapter 5's jungle isn't great, but it makes up for it with the settings and a good dungeon. Inside Raphael's tree along with that music is one of my most memorable moments in the game. I've never disliked Chapter 6. Yeah there is some necessary backtracking, but I like the scenario and puzzles enough to balance that out. Chapter 7 is probably the best of these. I only dislike how samey the battles get at this point in the game with how many resources you have. Squads of swoopers, duplighosts, ice piranhas, gulipits, and white clubbas just have me spamming strong hit all moves.
    7. Ch8. Yeah the dungeon and combat drags a bit. I also dislike that there's no fast travel from peach's castle to toad town.
    8. Ch1. It does a good job as a first chapter.

    2. Chapter 7
(You pretty much said everything in this vid that I would say. It's overall just a rly well made chapter)
    3. Chapter 2
I think Dry Dry Outpost is my favorite "town" area in the game and Mt Rugged and the Ruins are cool too. I find Dry Dry Desert a little bland tho cuz of how empty a lot of it is)
    4. Chapter 4
(Backtracking can be annoying but most of the other stuff about it I like. It's definitely the most creative chapter imo)
    5. Chapter 8
(Not super creative but I like it. Star Haven and the final boss are rly cool and I kinda like the hard enemy design)
    6. Chapter 3

    7. Chapter 1

I like chapter 3 the best and chapter 6 the second most and this was a great list and chapter 1 and 2 are my least faves. Thanks for sharing a good list with interesting opinions. You can feel free to ask why I like or dislike the chapters I listed. I didn’t hate any of the chapters tho to be honest. Also chapter 3 from ttyd is my all time fave chapter from the paper Mario series

@@Cytonox it was kind of boring outside of a few things like the partner, the boss fight and the mouse guy. Yeah just felt it kind of dragged on especially with mount rugged. One thing I can say tho is that I’d prefer this over castle and dragon from ttyd because aside from the quiz show and koops that chapter was more run of the mill. I get it’s the first chapter but still and also hooktail grossed me out.

Might be lame, but despite hating the boss I loved flower fields probably one of my favs up there with shy guys toy box, both were fun for me. My favorite growing up might be dry dry desert or haunted boos Forrest/mansion. Completely forgot the island one haha. I still have the game but not a 64, was my all time fav as a young kid will probably replay it on the Nintendo store soon as well as following it with another 1,000 year door play through on my GameCube, then replay or Oragami king on switch for the second time.

Funnily enough I have an N64 but not the game, I recorded this gameplay on the wii virtual console which is a pretty good port imo. I honestly could see putting Flower Fields a bit higher, I partly put it this low because my little brother hates it and he’d have whined about it to me if I gave it too much credit lol. He doesn’t really check our channel much now as far I know but in the early days this was something that I was thinking about for whatever reason

@@Cytonox haha honestly part of why I liked it so much was probably because I was like 10 and thinking “this is the most magical thing ever” I decided to replay it on the Nintendo switch and at the island now working on the 5th star. So when I get to flower fields next I’ll have to see if it’s still the hype I liked as a kid not sure if it will though lol. My brother only watched me play it he was more into super Mario, sunshine, and galaxy never the paper Mario series

I just finished replaying Flower Fields and it actually isn't as bad as I told myself it was. The only thing I hated were the bee enemies though they're easy to defeat. Also don't love some of the backtracking but it isn't too bad. Huff N Puff was way easier than he was when I was 11.
Actually, I dislike ch 4 way more than most of them.

You complain a lot about enemies with high defense, it sounds like you didn't use the tools you were given to deal with them besides Watt (D-Down Jump, D-Down Pound, all the Quake badges, Star Storm)

    • @Cytonox
      @Cytonox  Před 2 lety

Star storm doesn’t do a ton in the late game since enemies start having ~8 health usually and I prefer not to have to allocate BP to badges used just to counter specific enemies. I don’t mind them being sprinkled around but having them be as common as say, koopatrols are in chapter 8, gets boring real fast
