    Origami King is what happens when a game decides to just be itself rather than be a successor of a much better game. It doesn’t have to be TTYD to be good. It just did its thing, and succeeded in almost every way.

      I couldn't agree more, and I'm really glad that so many people have given it a chance! Seeing the general opinion quickly warm on Origami King as people got to, y'know, play the game has been a weirdly warming sight, considering that usually in gaming positivity doesn't get the chance to grow and bloom past negativity.

If a game like OK was made and had the freedom to use different designs and characters besides toad, id be interested. I just can't do this again after getting burned by SS and CS. It feels to me like they decided to triple down on the bad choices.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  Před 3 lety +14

      I'm glad that the video succeeded in that goal! With how much negativity surrounds the series online nowadays, I really did just want to explore every game from a less blood-red lens (or rosy, in the case of the first two games!), giving each game the best chance at highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Super is a perfect example of that - it's got an incredibly slow start but when it hits that watershed point, you're just not stopping. I fear that many people never got to that point, though, and that reflects even in my original concerns about the game before I'd played it!

    Awesome video man! As someone who also has Origami King and Super in my top 3, I agree with most of your points!
    As for the vellumental bosses, the only one I would argue is pretty bad is the fire one. I actually found ice and water to be particularly well designed in terms of mixing up how you approach the ring system/using abilities defensively, etc. Kingk did a pretty good breakdown about 2 days ago!

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  Před 3 lety +6

      That's interesting, Fire was probably the one I was most okay with beyond Earth of course. Water was probably the most annoying for me personally, thanks to the game more or less forcing you (or at least me, based on the way the game placed the 1000 Fold space) to choose between defending against its super attack and dealing massive damage the next turn. Fire was probably the easiest of the bunch for me!

      Well, putting Origami King in third place certainly demonstrates something that I can’t stress enough. Based on what I saw on Let’s Plays, I agree with lots of opinions on those two.

  • @justinc.5591
    @justinc.5591 Před 3 lety +42

    I kind of disagree with the notion that Origami King is “TTYD if it was made today with Nintendo’s restrictions.” The games differ quite a bit in terms of design philosophy and general feel. The restrictions only had to do with unique character design; the battle system and adventure/Zelda like gameplay was all due to Intelligent Systems.
    To me Origami King feels less like “Let’s try to emulate TTYD to the best we can without stepping over Nintendo’s lines” and more like “Let’s make something new and fresh with the series, taking elements from all of the games and putting our new ideas in”
    But other than that, great video.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  Před 3 lety +8

      What my buddy meant (or at least what I mean when co-opting that phrase from him!) is more-so about vibe. TTYD has a very specific energy to it that has not once been replicated in the series, and while Origami King goes for its own energy, it sort of looped back around into feeling like one of those games where the team really did have _fun_ making it. They're certainly different games from a design philosophy as you said!

      @justinc.5591 Před 3 lety +2

      The Golden Bolt Ah, that makes more sense. Both games do feel like the devs put a lot of effort and passion into it, even if said effort and passion was directed into different areas.

      Actually, the gameplay elements also have to do with Nintendo, and specifically Miyamoto. Nobody talks about how all the changes Paper Mario has had are due to Miyamoto wanting the changes as had been revealed in many an interview, including the combat. Miyamoto believed the RPG elements were too complicated and wanted something more simple, but also innovative, so IS began experimenting and here we are today.

      Derek van der Veen not necessarily, because look back at Starlow from the Mario & Luigi games. She may not be a robust character, but she still had her good moments during Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team. Personally I preferred 64 to ttyd, I only played them both for the first time back to back and 64 seemed a lot more consistent in quality compared to ttyd and while sure ttyd has some really cool moments it also has a lot of the most annoying things in the series such as a ton of back tracking and some frustrating game design such as the big tree in chapter 2. Still a great game though, my paper mario opinions are pretty controversial anyway.

Keep in note, 2 games I don’t play are tied with a game I did play. Don’t really ever see that.

    The first two Paper Mario games are among my favorite childhood experiences of all time, ESPECIALLY TTYD. The original was my very first RPG that taught me many new concepts I've never seen in a game at the time, and was a very fun adventure. TTYD was even better in just about every way, and it's still one of my favorite games, an unforgettable experience.
    Super Paper Mario was alright. I wouldn't put it above the first though. I've never played any of the games after Super, but I want to give Origami King a shot some day.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  Před 3 lety +14

      I can only imagine! That's part of what makes me glad I took so long to finally play it in full, I've had a copy for years but I just kept putting it off. Thanks to that, I feel like I got to experience the best of both worlds, as the rare person that enjoys Color Splash, the classic games, Super, and now Origami King! Had I played TTYD far sooner I feel like I'd never have given CS a fair shake.
      I know this is another sort of hot take, but after they straight-up nailed it with TTYD on almost every level, I'm actually kind of glad they decided to shift styles with Super. A traditional(ish) JRPG combat structure could only go so far in the mid-2000s, and they came very close to perfecting it, so continuing down that path likely wouldn't have beared as much fruit the third time around. Even if we'd gotten a TTYD 2 of sorts, I still think the first would've outclassed it, and I'd guess that something like Sticker Star would've been _more_ inevitable based on Miyamoto's comments about the SS demo "looking too much like the GameCube one." Essentially, we got an experimental franchise one game sooner rather than later, and it led to (in my opinion) the best classic-styled Zelda currently on the Switch in Origami King. And I'm cool with that!

    This guy totally gets it and provides a fresh perspective to the series.
    I really enjoyed the first 3 Paper Mario games. They were my past favourite RPGs, alongside the Mario & Luigi series. I went from non-RPG fan to absolute Mario RPG fan. It was the story, design, details and the "charm" that made me so keen to complete them, again and again. Super PM was excellent in its own right, and was unique but excelled at what it tried to achieve.
    So you can imagine my disappointment for Sticker Star and Color Splash. It didn't feel like Paper Mario anymore. The stories were stripped down, character designs were restricted, and the RPG elements were replaced with Stickers and Cards which just weren't engaging. The games were decent in some respects, but the pointless battles and Thing mechanics were too frustrating.
    When Origami King came out, I expected it to be bad compared to the first 3. However I realise that it's trying to be different. It isn't another Sticker Star or TTYD, it's something completely unique, a fusion of Zelda-like adventure and puzzle combat, and surprisingly enjoyable, even with the lack of RPG elements.
    After playing TOK I realise that there's potential for modern, adventure Paper Mario to be really great. I miss the RPG direction Nintendo used to have, and I'm wishing Nintendo did release another old-school Paper Mario. But I'm ready to accept that a full-action-adventure Paper Mario would be cool.

    When I was 4 years old, we got a wii, and the fifth mario game I've ever played was Super Paper Mario. There was one thing you forgot to mention in this list. It was that the game didn't fear adding in quite creepy and weird things. (Same can be said for Thousand Year Door) for example:
    *River Twygs Bed*
    *Mimi's spider transform animation*
    *when the game turned into a dating sim for a bit*
    *The world literally ending*
    This along with all the amazing characters really adds personality to them. The dialog for them also is 10/10. Each character is unique, and we literally only see 1 toad in the entire game, everyone else being their own character. For me, this mixed with the nostalgia from 10 years ago, makes it the best Mario game I've ever played in my life.

      Not really. Sure, there are a few toxic TTYD fans, I’ve met someone who told me to kill myself for liking Color Splash, but most of them are normal, reasonable people. They give good points as to why they like the first few Paper Mario games and dislike the ladder few Paper Mario games.

      I can sorta see what you mean. However, not playing a game because there are a few toxic fans in the game’s community is just dumb. Why do you think this game is praised so much? Because a lot of people like it. Simple as that. There isn’t much more meaning to it, people like the game because it’s fun to them.

      @Cayden Reed that logic makes no sense whatsoever

      The difference is most TTYD fans give good points as to why they like TTYD. The toxic fans, while loud, are a small minority.

    Paper mario the origami king is a masterpiece the graphics are phenomenal the music is just so f******* good and the story is fun aswell the lack of unique characters dont really bother me i moved past that point the story is fun aswell (though some of the bosses just come out of nowhere with no foreshadowing) the collectibles are very fun to find and look at

    Origami King is so underrated. I agree with you, the first 2-3 hours are meh. After that, pure greatness. However, I found the bosses to be highlights. They are awesome.

    Here's my list
    6 Super paper mario ( Sorry, the gameplay and the mechanic of switching from 2D and 3D just came out as not my thing.)
    5 Sticker star ( The game is actually okay for the most part, but you will get stuck once in a while. The combat systhm might not age well, but the visuals that they managed to achieve, and the soundtrack that accompanies it are the star attraction of the game. )
    4 Origami king ( The game is actually amazingly well made and charming. And the story is really heart warming)
    3 Color splash ( The game is actually really fun and the level based structure makes each one seem like episodes of a Saturday morning cartoon.)
    2 Paper Mario 64 ( One of best RPG's on the N64 and it really shows)
    1 The thousand year door (Well, obviously, it still amazes me that people are still talking about this game after all these years.)

    I sure hope he lets this Mario movie have a story. I don’t know why he won’t let the devs make these amazing stories they always have!
