Who is the GOAT in sports: Tom Brady or Michael Jordan? - Skip & Shannon I NFL I UNDISPUTED

- Tom Brady is beginning his quest for his eighth Super Bowl ring tonight, but his legacy as an all-time NFL legend is already cemented and now looks to be viewed as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Even when Brady was still chasing Joe Montana’s Super Bowl total in 2013, TB12 told Julian Edelman quote: 'I ain’t going for Montana. I’m going for Jordan.' Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe debate whether Brady is better than Michael Jordan.

@@dakingnate5793 That's why Brady gets to play at a high level in his 40s. That doesn't happen in basketball
It’s pretty interesting how 7-game playoffs vs 1-game playoffs is used by both sides to say one is harder. In 7-game series you can afford to lose a game so you have some room for errors, but in a 1-game series you can also catch a team on an off night or luck into a win.
1 game series is much harder. You have to be at your best every single game.
I think Jordan is better but it’s harder to win in the NFL and Brady has won more than most franchises.

2, 3peats on 2 occassions. Never folded once in the big time. Imo
In all fairness Tom didn’t fold either but it takes more than one guy to not fold to win
@@thorodinson1933 fair call.
Brady has 2 achievements that put him in a league of his own for me. He has more rings (7) than any franchise in the history of the NFL, and he has more Super Bowl MVPS (5) than any QB in history has rings.
The reality of the situation is that it just is not possible to make a fair comparison between the two. The sports are too different to make an accurate, fair comparison. They are both incredible talents within their own sport. If we're asking who is more athletic, obviously Jordan. If we're asking who has more impressive accomplishments, probably Brady. Who is a more gifted individual player? Probably Jordan. Who is better at finding and utilizing their teammates strengths? Brady.
The comparison just doesn't work well because football teams have more than twice as many players as a basketball team, Quarterback is basically the only position that can drastically influence a football team, and even then you still have to have good receivers/linemen. In basketball you can have dogshit teammates and still shine as an individual(Westbrook, Harden etc.)
Id say brady he's 2 lucky throws away from having nine. But jordan and brady are both just out of this world
I have to put mj over Brady for goat just for the simple fact that mj plays on both ends whereas Brady is only focusing on offence. Tom also played in a softer league whereas mike played in the 80s/90s of basketball. I love both of them so very much but I have to go Mike
Log out
The point on Jordan playing offense and defense and Brady playing offense. Makes 0 sense.
Football in itself is more physical than basketball. 80s 90s basketball was physical but not even close to how football is. In football it’s legal to run full speed and hit somebody as long as it’s not helmet to helmet.
I agree. And they have made football to where you can hardly touch the QB. Brady can probably play until 50 with these rules today. Also, no football player can ever be called the greatest of all sports because individual players don't have as much impact. They play half the game at the most. It's the ultimate team sport.

Couldn't agree more with both points. I have watched these two many times, and this is probably one of my favorites. Think of it this way... Everyone including Brady was chasing MJ in terms of greatness. MJ is like Jimi Hendrix, he was a paradigm shift in sports and sports mentality.

I agree with Shannon's first line. I think it somes it up. I've never seen a basketball player like Jordan. The closest is probably Kobe and he studied Mike alot. But there is still some debate as to who is the most accomplished basketball player. Brady is labeled the goat by damn near everyone including his adversaries. What he has done will most likely never be replicated. The same argument can be made for Jordan. As far as who is most influential to their respective sport. Its Jordan hands down.
Brady was a 6 round pick and became a HOF we will never see something like Brady again 6round pick QB win 7rings and 5MVP I'm super bowl. We had someone good closest to Jordan and it was Kobe Bryant.
I'm a great fan of sports in general, and I love American sport. However, I would argue that both Ronaldo and Messi have a greater career than MJ and Tom Brady due to the level of competition there is in Football.
I agree, European football has the best talent from all over the world, NBA and NFL just has domestic talent.
Gotta agree, man. The whole world plays soccer and those two guys are at the top of the game for so long.

By that reasoning Bird and Magic are better than Jordan. Their NCAA championship matchup is still the most watched basketball game ever, and they saved the NBA from the brink of irrelevancy. They also played on the Dream Team.
Michael Jordan was so great, that the 1994/95 Bulls, which was essentially the 96 team without him and Rodman, went 34-31 before he returned. Their record the next year, only things that changed were Jordan and Rodman playing full-time, 87-13.

There is no comparison. Jordan was asked to do more just by the basic rules of basketball. One of Jordan‘s greatest moments was “the shot” because of the whole sequence of events that took place leading up to it. Jordan made the clutch steal to set up that shot. The day Tom Brady intercepts of pass from Patrick Mahomes that leads to Brady throwing the game-winning touchdown, then we can talk.

Listen there both great as players but we have to look at it honestly brady plays fewer games but the game is more physical but brady needs more help to acheive his greatness like offense line pass protection needing receiver to catch the ball and the defense getting stops spécial teams as well but there is less room for error but brady has to play only one side of the ball. Jordan has to ball more games and the playoffs are longer but you do have more room for error too that is game not as physical as football but jordan does have to play both sides of the ball which takes more energy and jordan has to care more of à workload for his team to be successful then brady. So it depends how you look at it.
He wasn't caught cheating
This is a hard pick, but undeniably MJ and Brady were both extraterrestrial (ET). Wait-Brady still is! We were privileged to see these 2 athletes do their craft.
The QB only plays half the game. You can't really compare different sports like that. An individual starter in basketball will always have a greater impact on the outcome of the game than an individual football player.
It's amazing how this topic finally had Skip admitting Tom Brady's bad games for no once and how it has Shannon pretty much admitting the reasons why Jordan is better than Lebron in an underline way. Like my Grandad use to say " boy you get the real answers from ppl not when you ask them the direct question but when you just let them talk " lol😂😂😂
LOL! Exactly!
The answer is Jordan. When Jordan was playing, no one was close to him. You have to hold players up from other eras to even compete with him and he won6 titles. Brady has the titles, but honestly there were times Manning was better, Rogers, brees etc. that was never the case with Jordan. They both have 6 ships, but how good Jordan was gives him the edge to me.
Brady has 7
Completely agree. I’m don’t know about other sports... But out of American football, basketball, tennis, boxing, mma and football (soccer), the sports which I know a lot about... Michael Jordan is definitely the greatest player of all time.

Jordan played Defense and need:
Teammates to hit shots
Teammates to Rebound
Teammates to defend
Brady dont play Defense and needs:
Offensive line to block
RBs to control the clock
WRs/ TE to catch
Defense to make stops
Special Teams to play well
QBs needs more help and rely more on their Teammates
Absolutely. Tom Brady does a handful of things extremely well. But Jordan dominated on both ends of the court. Completely destroyed all opponents on both. He’s the greatest offensive player of all time in basketball and top 10, maybe even pushing top 5 greatest defenders of all time in basketball. It’s truly astonishing.
Realistically Jordan needs that but if his teammates don’t do that he will still be good. If QBs don’t get blocking or catching they literally cannot produce or have stats 😂. There’s a clear difference in contribution based on the amount of teammates used and their roles.
Dont forget about coaching, both had arguably the greatest sports coach of all time on their team (Phil Jackson, Bill Belichek)
you can't cross compare sports like that lmao. because you can argue that if mj didn't need as much help, then he should have more than 6 if he was so great. you can only cross compare them by comparing them to their own peers (other legends) and weighing their resumes against those guys, and that gap in resume between jordan and brady and the next guy in their own sport tells you who's the greatest. And it's Brady by a long shot.
@@be4st856
That only works if everybody’s competition is equal. In basketball you’re competing directly against the opposition on both ends. It’s like 50s players vs current ones, the difference between the best and worst QB, RB, and TE was a much larger gap than it is in 2021. Does that mean 50s players are greater than current NFL players Bc they’re far more superior to peers? No, in this case it means the competition is weaker. And Michael Jordan in basketball is probably close to consensus and other options are Top 25 team sports athletes to ever exist. In football maybe 2-3 of them can actually make a Top 25 team sport athlete list because most slots will go to players of different sports with more control and freedom to impact the game. I can’t even put an NFL player ahead of Wayne Gretzky, Messi, or Larry Bird.
That's a tough one, if we're being totally honest. Brady has earned his due man.

I think its Brady but an arguement is valid both sides. But the most clutch is Brady times 10. When he plays in the playoffs - everything is on the line. One mistake and its over. Its like going to the War to battle an army in the battlefield in an OG all vs all fashion in swords and shields. You either make it alive from that battle or you don't. Brady winning 7 rings which is more than any franchise is like Jordan winning more than the Celtics. And don't even start saying " Well Steelers got way less rings than the Celtics so its an unfair comparison " - you know why they have less than the Celtics ?? Cause its 10 times harder to win an NFL ring than it is to win an NBA Championship. He has won 7 rings (no QB has won more than 4) , he made 10 Superbowls (no QB more than 5) - he got 14 game winning drives - Elway got 6 and is 2nd. Brady got 6 only in the Superbowl. Brady got 34 playoff wins (34-11) - Montana is 2nd with 16 (16-7) - Brady got 16 since 2014- 16-3 recird and 4 rings. The man is so great- people hold winning against him. Its hard to be that great that people hold winning against you.
@@erikpuka2627 Also Brady took 2 franchises that had losing records before him and won the Super Bowl in year 1 with both franchises. @@skyedge3407 it is way harder winning a super bowl. Which is why I don’t give individual players credit for it. Football is the ultimate team game. Brady isn’t the greatest football player ever. He’s won the most Super Bowls. There’s a difference.

Jordan. Always and forever.
Nope shohei

Period.
Shannon makes a fair point I guess about Tom Brady having the luxury of a good defense in his early years but I also think that Tom Brady's presence and even leadership at that young age had an impact on the play of everybody on the team
Team played so much better under him vs Bledsoe. Same thing in college, Michigan was 10x better with Brady at QB
@@timsweeney684 oh yeah man his presence and Leadership is so underrated in the NFL

MJ: goats of goats
1. 6/6
2. More MVPs - finals and reg season
3. Multiple defensive player of year - bball a player has more impact on the outcome than in football
4. Multiple scoring champs - and the other stats are equally crazy
5. Greater performance delta btw him and his contemporaries
6. More iconic / memorable moves / shots / plays that have historic implications
7. More of a cultural icon - Jordan jump man is iconic w greatness
8. Radically changed the game and help accelerate its international appeal
9. More athletic - one of the most athletic players ever
10. Probably one of the most competitive / driven / motivated athlete, if not person - pulled team across the line … last Dance

*It’s hard for me to call TB the goat over MJ cause he only plays one side of the field but you have to factor in that winning in the NFL is way harder than winning in the NBA, less room for error, you always have to be at your best*
Yes but at the same time. You also can’t luck out in a 7 game series like basketball. A player gets hot for a game could always happen but because of the series format it’s a war of attrition how long can you sustain that? How well can you bounce back? How well can you counter schemes that get more specific over the course of a long series. It’s harder to beat the same team multiple times than once because these athletes have their pride okay you beat me once I’m not letting you walk over me tho. That’s the mindset for anyone in general. I don’t think single game or 7 is inherently better than the other method but I don’t think we should use the logic that it’s harder to win in football because of the number of games. I think the position argument is valid because qb is tough but the amount of games shouldn’t be a deciding factor
@@eliwise5330
It depends on the team. A bad team having to beat a way better team 1 time is easier. But a really good team having to beat a team 1 time is a little harder Bc it’s less room for error.
@@williamwoods778 Well Football is much more of a team sport than Basketball is and ring count isn’t a super fair comparison. The QB is the most important single position in football but if Brady doesn’t have a top 10 defense like he had for every one of his Super Bowl wins then he loses much more than 3. Jordan was an elite defender and like Shannon said he was capable of scoring half of his teams points for an entire game on one side and locking down the opposing teams best guard on the other. Plus most guys outside of Horry who have more than six rings were on the Celtics team with Bill Russell who won 11 and that team had nine HOFs when there were only 8-10 teams.
@@isaiah1931 Easy to play "D" in the playoffs when in 83 of Brady's playoff wins he has his offense on the field for 35 minutes and his team up 10-20 points in 80% of the games he's played.
@@williamwoods778 Brady doesn’t have more Super Bowl MVPs then Michael Jordan has Finals MVPs (despite more wins and appearances). Jordan has more regular season MVPs and Jordan led the NBA in scoring 10 times which I would equate to Brady either leading the league in passing or TDs. Pick your poison but either way Brady only did both of those things a combined 7 times. MJ never lost in the finals. MJ was a steals leader 3 times, 9 time all NBA defensive team and a Defensive Player of the Year because, of yeah, basketball players have to play defense. That’s not to mention the countless game winning shots MJ has. So objectively, MJs accomplishments are better overall. The only place he beat him is in ring count.

i'm seeing this take a lot, and it's a dumb argument in a debate of greatness. we're not debating influence. we're debating greatness. being a beneficiary of nike marketing and playing a global sport aren't worthy points in favor of jordan being greater than brady... the debate is still easy though. You can't cross-compare sports or their respective physical and mental talents (because that's idiot logic), but what you can do is cross-compare them by comparing them to their own peers (other legends) and weighing their resumes against those guys, and that gap in resume between Jordan and Brady and the next closest guys in their own sport tells you who's the greatest... And Brady wins by a long shot.
