Had to skip right to the AG1 section. Seen them everywhere and considered buying some but the aggressive advertising had me second guessing. Glad to hear my skepticism was warranted.
Same. I get a tub of multivitamin mix from costco that's I guess similar to AG1 and thought about trying AG1 cuz I see it everywhere on YT. I saw the like $80/mo. price and instantly closed the tab, lol.
just checked the nutrition facts, yeah it's piss, has barely anything in there at good enough doses in 1 serving.
All supplements are a scam if you eat any reasonable diet.
ye, the wierd thing about youtube promotions is- the more you see the stronger is your feeling that bigger part of the companeis money goes in to advertising, which often means that there is very little focus on product value and quality
James Smith did a good video on AG1 and why it’s guff
Dave is such a treasure for the climbing community. He is sharing so much information with us! Thank you Mr. Macleod!
Do not simply accept that information just because it comes from a good climber... Some of the things he says about nutrition and environment are outright wrong.
@@00Platypus00 i do not accept any information without questioning but i can be thankful for someone how tries to do good for others with his knowledge. And to say someone is wrong without any proof and example is not very convincing.
@@markusmuller65656 I am not about to drop a full literature review. I'll just say the ramblings about plant protein and the environmental impact of plant-based diets is coming from a place of bias, from someone who promotes keto and even wears the shirt of a YT channel known for its unscientific drivel. Anyhow, if you usually do not accept information without properly sourcing it then all that is perfectly fine :) Cheers.
@@00Platypus00 Thanks for your answer and the example. Of course you have to cherry pick and evaluate the information you get and map it to yourself. And i agree on your point about the criticism regarding the points about plant based diets! My initial comment seems a little bit naive i guess.
@@markusmuller65656 Not really naive if you ask me. I just thought of warning a tiny bit. We can appreciate Dave for what he is good at - there is no questioning his climbing skills - while taking what he (and everyone else) says about other things with a grain of salt. I did not mean to be confrontative :)
I am equal parts surprised and delighted to see this collab. Great stuff start to finish.
Lool, the AG1 part caught me by surprise! 😂 I really was expecting a sponsored opinion
Cocaine is probably cheaper than AG1 😀
Then Dave would lose a lot of credibility…. When hoopers beta did their ag1 commercials their claim of science based content became just empty words for me….
@@stf6086 Yeah, it certainly blurs the message a bit. They did speak out against the Eric Hörst collagen bullshit in the past but they'll advertise another unnecessary overpriced supplement instead, it massively contradicts the philosophy of their channel. Then again 99% of what's on their channel is still good info.
Idk if this makes you feel any better but I'm 100% certain that the high price tag for AG1 is to pay for the insane amount of money their sponsorships pay. Obviously I don't know the figure but they've sponsored Magnus so this would be a really hefty amount. Let them get their bread from a sponsor, at the end of the day, like Dave said, it doesn't hurt, but yeah you can buy better stuff from just multivitamins
nice vid! time for me to get some BACC, HGH and coke so i can send my V4 proj on the moonboard
To be fair v4 on the moonboard is basically v10
Climbers should start experimenting with tren.
@@Hopesfallout saving that for the V5s on the moonboard
Any video with Dave Macleod in it is incomparably helpful to climbing, and its cool to see him in a goofier style of video
Dude, this is good stuff, Climbing Stuff.
These are good interviews - you're a likeable guy and these are fun, entertaining, and informative.
Well-done.
that is mostly misinformation by seemingly purposely painting a very limited picture of things. little hint for that is his t-shirt.
@@Fred-oz3twthere's a reason your reply has no likes

What the hell are you talking about?
What does anything you said have anything to do with my comment?
@@rickyrickstan563I'm not saying that OP is right or wrong, but anyways: likes or the absence of likes are NOT an indicator of the correctness of a comment.
You dismiss his education and expertise because of a vegetable t-Shirt? Btw he isn’t even a vegetarian… you are a prime example of what you claim about dave.
I aproached the video thinking that it would be goofy but I was pleasently surprised. Great video!
Wow! This surprised me. This actually important and serious content outside of memes and that.
Good job and amazing interview!
#1 climbing news channel.
Dude excellent freaking work so great to see this channel evolve:)
Super interesting thank you both for this !
Great to see two contrasting youtube climbers vibing together! Nice combo. You brought out Dave's fun side
Guy's a legend! Cool to see this colab
Thanks for making this extremely informative while also decently fun. Good trick for my AD HD to stay focused ❤️🔥
Dave Macleod is so great! And this was a great video idea from Climbing Stuff to get at his voluminous, quality knowledge!
What about Yorkshire tea? It looks like it might up the British trad game at least!
The best tea out there.
S tier.
Oh yeah. It's illegal to climb in Yorkshire unless you have a flask of verifiable Yorkshire Tea.
This was really insightful. Dave is a living legend!
It's amazing to have Dave in the video! He is so knowledgeable and he state is an an oppinion not a fact
I love this. Keep these kind of videos coming
probably should've asked about just caffeine by itself or in the form of plain coffee or tea. I see a lot of people online always associating "coffee" with people who spend $6 every day on some starbucks sugar bomb as if it's impossible to drink it without all of the extra added bullshit. Most preworkouts have ridiculously high doses of caffeine (400mg per scoop isn't unheard of) but they differ in how much they deliver of other random supplements like arginine, l-citrulline, carnitine, beta-alanine, etc which give preworkout blends more effects beyond pure stimulation.
Yeah this guy clearly didnt seem to be the best person to interview and rank some of the kinds of "supplements" in this list.
same with red bull
No sugar though @@16m49x3
Awesome video as usual!
On a side note, Dave would probably be the only climbing CZcamsr I'd be interested in getting a course from, he knows his stuff and explains it really well. His books are great too.
Good to see no biases, climbing is a sport that a lot of people don't take diet into account for so this video might send people in the right direction
Cool to have Dave on! Glad he mentioned his supplements at the end, those really make you feel different. Some fun substances you gave but I missed beta-alanine and peptides such as bpc-157 or tb-500. Which could be interesting since he has a pulley injury.
Super good. It's always hard to get info about nutrition and this video nailed it in an entertaining way!
Much more interesting and informative then the "to climb hard, you have to pull hard, use good technique, try hard" things that dominate my feed
i like your "interview" style, keep em comin
Fascinating! Great video :)
Awesome video, Dave is the man. The team up was very funny and got a ton of good information. Please do a collaboration on training for climbing with him. He's realistic and could be very informative
If it were 10 times cheaper, it would go up to D - Endorsment of AG1 - love it
S tier video! Love Dave, love what you do. Just awesome
Great collaboration
Great video, anything with so much Dave action is S tier
My god Dave knows a thing or two about optimal camera lighting.
This is the climbing content we need
I'm so happy to hear the honest answers and listen to that expanded comment about sugar and quick energy sources like bread. Bread is good, but only as a side to the main dish. But sugar drinks? Omg, how many people drink and drink them every day... They really should be licensed like alcohol at some point in time.
What a great collab!
Well this might be my favorite video yet
Great video, cool that you got dave ob the channel!
I would be keen to know why hes not on a vegetarian diet considering he should know all about increased health risks from consuming red meat.
Dude you are getting some crazy collabs these days. I'm expecting the next video to be something like 'Reinholt Messner took me up Everest'
I'm not a climber anymore, but this was still interesting, good thing it wasn't too specific. One thing that wasn't mentioned about getting foods from real foods is flavour! You'll miss on a lot of lovely and interesting flavours by taking protein mostly in powdered form, be it whey or plant based.
I'm with you on the bread diet though, looove bread! I've made it slightly better by baking my own, but it's still a lot of carbs, can't get around that. I could happily live on bread, cheese, selected fruits, and chocolate. Might not live long, but would die happy 😂
I saw Dave in the thumbnail for two days or so and now realized it is a Climbing Stuff video 😍. My brain possibly couldn’t comprehend this unusual teamup. My favorite so far. Now I’m gonna watch it. (I would have watched it later anyway)
Talking to Dan is great, his work awesome. A good partnership for sure!
You have such a fun rapport with your guests, it's always super entertaining to watch whenever you have a collab on the channel. It was also super informative as well as being fun to watch. I do find it a little humorous that the last AG1 sponsor ad I saw was on some random Magnus vid lol.
Thought the thumbnail was like a meme/clickbait thing, but this was acutally informative 😂😂
Loved this video!
Comment for the alg. Dave is a gem of the climbing world.
Dave has a Vegetable Police T-Shirt on, that dude is straight bonkers!
Did not see that connection coming
Great video. Would have loved to hear him talk about caffeine as a general drug/tool but super interesting stuff. Time to buy more eggs and salmon.
why does Dave look like an AI video at the beggining wtffff
How many tabs did you take today, Santiago?
up until 1:19 Dave seems straight out the uncanny valley, maybe it’s the lighting idk
@@santiagogc427agreed he looked like ai
Large studio-type light source like soft box or something + big sensor camera with a decent lens and shallow depth of field give this smooth buttery look.
The "Vegetable" t-shirt was a dead giveaway
This video was awesome! Interessting, educational and funny! As a German, I missed the beer in the rankings, but we all know it's definitely S-tier-plus.😜
Good video. Wish you would have asked about the “hydration” sups like LMNT. I find them to be overpriced salt 🤷♂️. Keep at it sir!
First time seeing any of Dave's stuff but he had my INSTANT respect when he said "pass" on commenting on HGH solely because he didn't feel like he knew enough about it. That's some serious integrity.
Finally Climbing Stuff uploaded again. (I've never climbed in my life but this guy is just too good at making videos)
I straight up wrote in my nutrition class midterm that my Saturday breakfast is 2 bags pop tarts, and I start and end lunch with ice cream, full plate of fries, and random whatever lol
Great video. Wish you had included antioxidant sources - sour cherry juice (as an example) also stimulates muscle growth in studies. Ide love to hear Dave's opinion, esp given his low-carb diet is probably low on antioxidants (eg, fruit).
his smile after saying the joke about AG1 going up a tier sold the video for me
Skipped directly to the AG1 to see what he said. Dave said exactly what I thought he would say!
Didn't think this collab would ever happen, heeeeelllllll yeah
Idk about the discussion about pea protein allegedly contributing to more waste than whey protein supplements.. I feel like is removing the fact that in order to produce whey, a cow is consuming a huge volume of plant feed. Im seriously doubting that pea protein may have a higher envm impact, but Id be interested in seeing a life cycle analysis for both.
edit: pea protein is definitely lower impact lol
Dave has something against consuming plants that is completely irrational. He is very anti vegan with his keto diet. His shirt says it all...
Mate, look for the LCA then. Fuck you don’t need to just sit there are wait to be told what to think
I don't have a strong opinion, so I'm just trying to formulate my understanding: two main points, cows don't need animal feed, they can live off of grass and rainwater, this is sadly not done in most agriculture since it is more expensive in terms of area for production.
The point i think Macleod is trying to make is, that most people who decide to consume plant protein over animal do it to avoid the meat industry, which they don't.
Exactly, way more resources being used and also way more emissions with whey protein than plant proteins
@@00Platypus00The shirt is from a channep called vegetable police. that channel is run by a person, who was vegan at several points in time and even moved to Thailand to live on a fruit based diet.
VEGETABLE POLICE! 😅
what's up with that shirt Dave?!
19:40 I think it’s important to note that while the powder has no vitamin d, when you sign up you get a free year supply of vitamin d and k oil that you add to the shake
Also, iodine deficiency is pretty rare in the United States.
This one is actually rly informative lol
Dave is the BEST 🤩👏
Great video and agree with most of it, but surely things like red bull and pre work out don’t harm your diet as it’s used on top when you exercise more than usual? 100 mile bike ride, I don’t think some sugar is going to displace my nutrients?
Was not expecting a Vegetable Police shirt :D
I know it’s all jokes but I’m actually quite a heavy weed smoker and recently I’ve took a break from it and have noticed a huge improvement in energy, focus and quite possibly strength but I’m not too sure about the strength, I’d put it in the D or E tier.
I cut out whey/casein and cows milk (I still eat cheese and quark) and my acne has cleared up almost entirely. If you’re struggling with acne, try cutting those things out - it’s not the case for everyone but worth a shot
No mention of Mag Juice or Mag Dust? I've been butt chugging Mag Juice just for fun, but wondering if it's good for me?
The discussion around marijuana was actually really interesting albeit short, but one thing that's sort of intangible about the plant when I use it in my climbing (12b/c, V6-8) is feeling centered in my body. Like any of these other supplements, you can dose it so that you're receiving primarily the benefits (high focus on a single task, mild muscle relaxant, anxiety relief) without many of the known drawbacks (mental and physical lethargy, lower cognitive focus). In many cases, climbing on a low dose often makes me feel more attentive to my movement and body position than I otherwise may be in difficult positions like cruxes on projects.
I'd say it's subjectively beneficial and warrants some further investigation without writing it off of the list completely.
Entertaining and informative, nice job! Vitamin C supplements would have been nice to be included.
It's a good thing that egg and beef production don't have horrible environmental concerns that Dave failed to mention, that'd be very odd
Also, ranking energy drinks below F is hilarious, caffeine is insanely effective
@@thenayancat8802use caffeine sups instead of sugar with a bit of it instead then?
@@tobiaslueck94 energy drinks generally have good doses of caffeine, a bit of sugar around exercise is absolutely fine as you'll be burning it anyway (pre-carnivore Dave knew this), and sugar free energy drinks exist, but yeah sure whatever
@@thenayancat8802 thats absolutely wrong. Those doses of sugar cannot be defined as a bit. Redbull f.e. has more than 10g per 100ml in it, that lets your blutsugar skyrocket and drop down if u dont put smth in to your System afterwards. Also you mention beef and egg production has per se nad production circumstances which also just is a false statement. It really comes down to where you buy it.
@@thenayancat8802czcams.com/video/SBaX0jEYsjU/video.htmlsi=vQYoI7T85axJ8Zgd
That was such an insanely informative video. Honestly, it didn't even come into my head that if you got everything naturally then you don't need to supplement, even if you do a lot of exercise.
As a UK viewer will defo be getting some Vitamin D from Boots and eating some more eggies (red meat is too bad for the environment for me)
Shieeet, this channel grows!
No Yerba Mate 🧉?
@climbermacleod as austrian I have a slew of other reasons to not like Red Bull … but I was always wondering does sugar water even have an effect if you drink them during training to give you short time energy - or is even that nonsense because the body cannot access it that immediately? Or in other words do have energy drinks / sugar water any real use in sports performance…
Marihuana definitely helps with redding rid of anxiety - but the downside regarding climbing is: you also lose a fair bit of fine motoric precision when you're high;) - and it certainly lowers your focus - so with a precision sport like climbing, you may have a more relaxed mind - but you also don't feel your body as well and I personally experienced it as being not helpful, since I just take way longer for correct foot placement for example...
Also you should try blood doping for endurance climbing lol
You should talk to Alex Megos about this I bet he‘d have a very different opinion about beef and eggs
Yes, …..but Alex is „just“ a climber and not a nutritionist. He obviously knows nothing about nutrition. His video left me speechless and I thought „please, just stick to climbing content and nothing else for your videos“
@@user-wm7ft4ug8c Nutrionist is not a legally protected title, everyone can call themselves a nutrionist fyi. Not saying Dave doesnt know more about nutrition than Alex would. Just saying, it's not what you think. edit: Nvm, after seeing him recommend red meat and eggs I think Alex might actually know more about nutrition than Dave does. They are both 'just' climbers, only one calls himself a nutrionist and the other just eats healthy.
I just started giving a shit about what I eat, great timing Mr Stuff
great time to hear an expert tell you suplements are not needed
There is definitely someone out there who climbs with coke instead of chalk, or coke cut with chalk
"are you taking a break to rechalk?"
"FUCK YES I AM"
Is that a game cube in the back? Where does that fall on the scale?
On the whole a very informative video.
The logic that Dave offers to make the distinction between animal and plant protein based on environmental impact seemed a bit odd. Ok they don't use the full plant to make the protein, so fine to critique that. But what about whey? That comes from dairy production, which for the most part has a significant environmental impact from direct emissions or from the growing of feed - which often is intensive.
Think Dave may have to rethink that one.
Sugar free energy drinks are a thing and are pretty good for pre-workout
the "GET FREE VIDEO SERIES" button from the link you provided doesn't work on Firefox
Cannabis. So if anyone else has seen the Arnold s documentary or read the book. He talks about smoking during breaks at the gym. Study's apparently show, that cannabinoids actually help block the build of lactic acid.
No it's bs. It makes you hungry, so you eat more even when you're super tired and don't want to eat. And it makes your pain from your body aches and whatnot go away.
not sure if Dave will respond to comments here, but what about algae oil instead of fish oil due to its superior environmental impacts? I've heard it's better for you actually, like taking out the middle man (the fish) and less likely to cause the gross burbs / digestion issues.
I think coat is an issue. With the exception of some premium high priced algae oils, many simply have much less EPA/DHA in which are the key parts of the omega 3. For example I take a high EPA/DHA fish oil that costs about a tenner a month - to get the same levels from algae where I live I'd need to spend 3-4x that amount.
Take algae n3s if you like but be careful to see that you are getting the sufficient dose - many (perhaps all, but I'm happy to be shown otherwise) supplements have low amounts of DHA/EPA per serving. Middle men in ecosystems are a good thing!
When I'm in the gym I'm only sweating and just need calories and electrolytes.
But when im Climbing I'm out for a long time and need either beef jerky and alot of water OR just some water with bcaas. Yes its not as good as whey or a full protein but I'm not going to drink whey protein in the hot sun while I'm sweating. Bcaas sre flavored to taste like mango and other fruits and taste simply amazing. Just the fact that I can take tiny sips and each one feels so thirst quenching AND it atleast has SOMETHING to help promote MPS.
It's it's during a long activity I simply like it more than water or whey.
I'll have whey when or an actual steak when I'm done.
My adhd-brain and I will go read that creatine paper now! (And see if there are any research on my kind of cognitive problems and creatine)
This was super interesting thanks
I think everyone concerned with their level of protein intake should watch the Zoe episode with Christopher Gardner. Basically the recommended values are above the optimal values for 90% of the population, but thats done on purpose so that it can meet the needs of 90% of the population, but it also means 10% are falling short, and it's different from person to person. What they arrive at is that, on average, everyone is already getting more than enough protein.
Great stuff. Love that your guests camera is so much better than yours 😂😂
I don't understand the Redbull bit... Caffeine has well studied links to performance gains, so it's more than just sugar water.
I think that was down to the poor choice of "supplements" on the list. He should have put it as caffeine, not as energy drinks to actually get an accurate response from Dave. Honestly I liked the video but he should have done more research into the the different supplements, it was a rather basic and lumped together list
XII,12 mixed is winter climbing stuff
great video!
Dave sure loves split grades
Marijuana is great for muscle recovery, that's pretty much it concerning climbing tho 😅 So Cbd with a very low amount of thc could help during rest to help recovery without the negative psychoactiv effect, if you dont smoke it ofc
4:00 how is lactating a downside exactly?
Slowly morphed into a nutrition coaching session 😂
thank you our lord for another great video
