Hammertown: The Story of the Sequoia Beast
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 02. 2021
- Derek Miller decided that he was going to race in the toughest single day offroad race in the world...two months before the race...without a race ready vehicle. Once he made that decision everything he did was aimed towards getting his 2002 Toyota Sequoia turned from a street-legal trail rig to a racecar that could pass the stringent race guidelines for the vehicles. Just seeing the green flag at the start line was going to be a monumental challenge.
On February 5, 2021 Derek and Mike Hernandez (co-driver) put on their race helmets and started the engine ready to begin their 9 hour, 126-mile race through desert and rocks in the Every Man Challenge at King of the Hammers. Watch their journey as they enter the first-ever Toyota Sequoia in the King of the Hammers.

This is awesome man! Inspired the hell out of me. Do you have a merchandise store? I would like to support anyway I can. Keep it up man

My parents siqoua is sitting at 475k miles. Still kicking strong. That 4.7 is unmatched.
I just bought a 4.7 4WD 4runner...Starting to believe itll be the best purchase of my life
Only by 6.2s probably.
@@odys3803 Ehh GM quality is not in the same realm.
@@dixonsantana-lamboy8432 I wrote 6.2 not GM. If you don't see a difference, you might have a problem.
@@odys3803 Please do clarify here then. Are you referring to the 6.2 diesel or something else?
Belief in self, strong marriage and partnerships, will and exhaust fumes. Excellent work!
Worked at a dealership when I was in high school quite a while back; We had multiple parking lots a few miles away from the dealership due to space constraints, and we used a Sequoia to get there. When I left, it was over 300k miles and still kicking. We used to wholesale them to the middle east all the time, they loved them over there. Great machine, and awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Hope you're doing well Derek, and Mike H. Love the channel Mike G.
As a father of two kids under 6, it’s tough getting the time to work on our projects. Huge shout out to our wives for helping us out on our projects. Good job on your build👍
Super proud of this and my team ⚡️⚡️⚡️
You guys did a great job, really cool to see what you accomplished. I was there most of the time and pretty sure I saw your rig...
@@wolphman007 thanks for the support bro
Where’s the social media links?
The thing that stood out to me the most is the amazing support of his wife👌👌 may we all be this blessed 🙏🙏 sick build man.
This was a great story I used to be a Toyota Technician and loved the Sequoia easy to work on and a pleasure to drive. This video took the Sequoia to a whole new level for the first gens.
I love my 02’, she has 335k miles on her. She loves to be driven hard and never complains. Great job Miller family and friends!
Mad respect for you and the team. I have done extreme rock crawling in Moab, and Rubicon and similar areas. Sierra Nevada kicked my ass. Came off the trail with brake liners thinner than a credit car. Mechanic looked at me and asked, "Why are you even still alive?" My skills were never that great, but I learned things about myself, pitting choice of lines and the like, and being with good people, it's just one of the best things you can ever do in life. But your ability to fab the machine is so far beyond anything I ever did. Having once been strapped through 9 of 12 miles, picking up U-joints and other pieces along the way, carnage happens.
That took some balls. I shared this to Toyota usa twitter page.
Great job Derek, listened to the podcast last week and was waiting for the video. What you guys accomplished was nothing short of a huge success. Be proud.
Man, this video gave me chills... for one, I have a gray 07 Sequoia on a 3" lift with 33's... seeing what you were able to do with yours is impressive. Sequoias are always underappreciated. Props to you, your wife and your entire team for getting as far as you did..
Amazing video guys! Had a blast working our way back out of Outer Limits with Derek and Mike. Hope to see them again next year or at another race this season.
Everyone has a dream, but there are few that have lived theirs and fewer that have attempted something as monumental as KING OF THE HAMMERS! Your achievement to those who know you, those who know this race and those who know what you did to get their, will forever remember you succeeding in one of your life's greatest challenges. CRAWL ON LITE BRITE
This is so awesome. I built up my 04 limited for minor overlanding and have yet to hit a trail,,,, after watching this, im ready to chop it up, put in a roll cage and do the same thing. This is just awesome. Well done Derek and team!
That looked brilliant and I was truly happy for the whole team that they lasted longer than a lot of the more specific vehicles there that day. Go Fieldcraft Survival.
That's just freaking amazing! The fact that you built it then worked with family and friends is incredible. You've got an awesome team and family around you! Much love and support!
Right on! What a great story! And I love the Toyota Sequoia.
Saw you guys start! Rebuild, and we will be looking forward to setting you next year
Wow, I got a 1st gen sequoia too. Your car a beast
This was a cool change of pace! If there's a weak spot on your truck then Johnson Valley will show you where it is. It's a tough race for sure.
Killer video!! I’m stoked you got footage of pushing the ranger up in Cougar, I was a couple cars behind you and it was pretty epic. I own the 4659 DKA Motorsports Comanche and our race didn’t go too well either but was still a great time and managed to get some livestream time in lol.
I own a 06 toyota sequoia limited with 475000, still drives like new. currently modding it to be an overlander, hopefully be done by a year.
Good luck to you bud that sequoia is a dream truck in my eyes!
Love seeing the Sequoia get some much needed attention!
Great job! Crazy gratitude for you all putting yourselves out there to share these experiences.
Finally someone that thinks outside the Box,,Encouragement to do more to my 2004 Sequoia ,I am Just Replacing all the worn part's but some day i want it to just go on regular off road's ,,,Nice Job You guy's have done it , made a race Sequoia, and it is Badass!, As they say ,Keep on Trucking!
Thanks for sharing Kick ass event and put 1000% heart in your equipment and your team that worked to make happen. This stuff of America was built on. Endeavor of setting out put try like Hell to make it a go. Thanks share and keep it up.
What a good woman Derek has. Positive mindset. Not there to tell him no.
Right on!! 💯% This video made my week and it's only Monday. There is so much we can learn from having a good attitude and never giving up.
The good ol sequoia’s just keep on puttin gotta love those things
this man and his team needs to be on Hoonigan AutoFocus
Awesome video! So cool to see what you and your team accomplished. Great to see the family effort and that of your friends. Sorry it didn't go as planned but you'll be back stronger! Was there and I'm pretty sure I saw you guys 🤘
Awesome video, Awesome build! Love how out there even during the real race many are still stopping, checking on each other, and helping each other. Even if it's a quick thumbs up it brings the race down to reality. It's a race but it's also a bunch of buds watching out for each other.
Hard work and dedication will get you there, and if you work harder with more dedication you will get there sooner. Great job guys, epic🤙🏼
That’s awesome and amazing. Love the teamwork, dedication and commitment.
Absolutely enjoyed watch this!!! Amazing!
Absolutely amazing job what an inspiration.
Exceptionally ballsome!! You guys performed ! Many lessons learned, good times and best wishes on the next race!!!
I absolutely love Sequoia! This is by far the baddest one I have ever seen.
Amazing, simply amazing. Well done! 👍
Was into offroading years ago, had an 03 TJ I built on tons/40s/stretched to 110in but was sold when we had my son and been doing other stuff ever since. I just got an 05 Sequoia and got the offroading bug again... Seeing this reignited my dream/bucket list item to build something for KOH (no, not my Sequoia, I'll build a dedicated buggy). Awesome job and super unique build!!
1st gen sequoias are the only affordable Toyota hidden gems left nowadays! (Stop telling everybody 😄) Great work from a hard working family! Congratulations!
By the way for anyone unfamiliar, completing a full lap of a KOH race with a rushed, freshly home built, non-tube buggy kit car is just incredible, especially being able to leave the track under it's own power 😯 👍👍👍
Awesome story!! Can’t wait to see what you do next year!
That was awesome guys, this year was a great race, hope ye go back next year
amazing work making it through a lap of one of the hardest races in the world
I’m building a 96’ T100 piece by piece in my garage. Don’t see any of them around town or on the trail. You’re a f**** inspiration dude! Party on and keep filming!
Love there drive of this family. Hope to see more in The future
Man this was awesome to watch. This team is great as well. You guys are just good people.
Fantastic accomplishment even without the extremely short timeline! Bravo.
Congrats man! Very cool journey. I’m gearing up to complete my prerunner Tacoma and this was just thing I needed to get excited for the next big push of fab work 🤘🏻
I just bought an 03 Sequoia to turn into a trail rig. Nothing quite this hardcore, but I’m looking forward to getting it on the trail. Well done you guys!
This is incredible guys! Congrats on the run!
Awesome adventure Derek and Mike!! The Sequoia Beast is the best! 👊
That was awesome, the fact you completed more than 1 lap in such a limited time build is amazing. Don't doubt on Sequoias, they are a sturdy chassis
Lemme tell YOU a story of 99 4runner. It has 260,000 miles, has been getting me to work on a drilling rig in West Texas, has only been down ONCE and that's because I hit a barditch at 60mph. They are unlike anything out there and someone would have to kill me to get that thing. Her name is brenda
My dad's first car was a 99 4Runner SR5.... Her name was ..... Is Brenda.
@@buythebottom rooster is your dad?
Absolutely amazing and thanks
amazing! congratulations! keep pushing!
Damn good job gentlemen! Thank you for sharing.
Epic! Good show, brother!

Great story. I'm looking for a sequoia to carry my growing family around...
Awesome video!!! Great crew!!! Badass tree!!!!

Love this!! Fellow Sequoia Offroader in Las Vegas. 2004 Limited 4WD 275K miles no issues
Awesome build.. Love it! 👍🤩
All we need now is a RAV4 Beast and a 4Runner Beast! 😜
Pretty cool, way to go!
ĶOH needs a class just for this type of grass-roots vehicles. "Just Legal"
Awesome bro super inspiring
Great video!!!
What a big beast… man Toyota should sponsor you.. Ivan Ironman Steward would be proud of you 👏🏼
300,000 miles on my sequoia. Toyota strong baby. Made it home on its own power. Legendary
I was rooting for you guys. From a fellow tree to another. 👍
Hope you guys go back for KOH 2022 awesome job :)
You guys are rad! Well done!👍👍
That’s bad ass. The moser I see these being used as big bad off-road machines the more I kinda want one!! I recently did a walk around on one with a solid axle and built for overlanding and it’s awesome but this, this is next level cool
I'm buying Fieldcraft shit just for being such an awesome sponsor and supporting this team!
I loved this!
Very well constructed video.
I was there and saw that thing pull up to the starting line and was like WTF is that, now I know the rest of the story. 👍
That was phenomenal !!
Congrats guys on a job well done.
This was dope as hell!!!
Whoa 😮! Great job!

Tshirts are available. Hit me on IG. Dmill_withawelder
Dang how the heck did Seth Rogan land Drew Barrymore as a wife/pit manager?
Found this channel from a random Redcell video. This opening shot, I subbed.
I had an 05 Sequoia and I loved it. It had 300k when I sold it and planned on driving it to 500k. It is just big 4runner and I loved wheeling it.
Well done.
Amazing 👏
