    I've watched COUNTLESS youtube videos of people building things. There's something about this one: the background music, your narration, the pace of the editing. I could watch this all day! Well done.

    Just wanted to say, months ago, I was trying to decide how to take the next step. Your video was just enough inspiration to start my own fabrication business.
    I started building arms like yours, just extended oem arms, and it snowballed into a full on boxed 3.5” long travel kit. Mapped my own designs and everything. I’m weeks away from being finished and this has spawned many other projects and customers.
    So all that said, I wanted to thank you!

    Thanks for detailing this build so thoroughly and for sharing your struggle and honesty regarding it. All I could think the whole time was “this is so much work” but I totally agree with your philosophy. I really want to get a welder and start learning to fabricate. Hearing your thoughts about taking on new challenges was inspiring!
    I also really want to know how this all holds up and performs over time so keep us updated!

      @@treehouseoffroad Today i just interviewed for a mig welding position at a mopar header shop... i failed miserably and burned through every pipe they gave me. even after adjusting settings. i think i outran my puddle trying to go fast to avoid burn through. which ironically caused burn through. I'm honestly not sure, the lead welder there ran a perfect bead with the same settings. I really don't even know what he was doing different. definitely recalibrated how good i thought i was. I mean i've never welded thin tubing before, only thicker materials and i am certified as a welder. But... i haven't been able to practice cause i'm out of work, and i can't get work cause i'm out of practice basically i'm stuck in a catch 22 scenario.
      I'm very angry, distressed, agitated. I am a good welder under the right circumstances i still believe, but i just dropped the ball today. but hey atleast i tried... my third weld test i've failed.
      Thinking of just getting an unskilled job to save up for my own machine where i can practice on my own...Sucks to fail so many times. i got 10 weeks of training just to fail so many times.
      All those podcasts and motivational speakers always say to push yourself and fail until you succeed.. But i really don't see myself succeeding currently with my current skillset.

    I've been a welder/fabricator nearly 30 years, from military patrol boats, wind towers, aerial lifts, oil & gas pipe welding to custom tube chassis and suspension. You have the perfect attitude for someone just learning. I'm going to follow you to watch your growth as a fabricator and see what cool shit you build. Now for the criticism. Please, I beg of you to invest in a gas mig setup. Even a Hobart handler 140 gas welder will push you to the next level. Ideally a 220v machine will secure your fabrication work and ensure it stays together. Thanks for sharing.

    • @treehouseoffroad
      @treehouseoffroad  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that. The welder I have is a Lincoln 180 amp that I run on 220v. It does have the option to run gas but it's so windy where I live and I don't have anywhere indoors to weld that is ventilated. A buddy and I recently started renting out a bay from a local auto body shop, it's a little bit more protected from the wind but not completely. If I wanted to run gas, how much wind is acceptable?

    • @PNW_Rodeo
      @PNW_Rodeo Před rokem

      @Treehouse Overland it depends on a lot of factors. Welding with the wind at your back can make the difference. I've welded in 40-60 mph winds with nothing more than a few pieces of cardboard around my work piece. You can always turn the gas up on the regulator, use a smaller diameter nozzle, or pick up a weld curtain and utilize all three. It makes a huge difference in weld quality and cleanup. When you "gas out," you will know immediately. The weld changes color, and the puddle starts fighting you and spitting. Pure CO2 is cheap but causes more spatter and welds good. 75%/25% (Co2 and argon) is the cleanest gas for steel and allows you to really learn by watching the puddle with minimal spatter and cleanup. I love the videos and DIY on the Sequoia. Keep up the great attitude and work 👍

      Thanks my learning was a result of the pandemic. I wanted a steel front bumper built for my truck but couldn't get anyone to return my calls/emails. So I decided to buy a welder and a DIY bumper kit from Coastal Offroad. The rest as they say is history!

    Nice vid. Thanks. When splicing the tubes you should make the weld joint longer. taper the ends or fish mouth them or add an internal reinforcement. Have a look at the tube splicing methods used for aircraft. You can down the AC43-13 document for free from the FAA. The reason for this is that the heat effected zone of a weld will be weaker than the tube. By making the weld longer you will spread the loads over a longer weld.

    • @treehouseoffroad
      @treehouseoffroad  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the constructive criticism, I wondered about that. Thought about putting an internal slug where the sleeves join, but since it wasn't completely straight it would have been difficult. (Mainly I was rushing let's be honest). I ended up welding some quarter inch ribs from the bushing barrels all the way down the top of each side of each UCA. I think it added a little strength, so far no issues and I've been beating on the thing hard.
      I'm always down to learn though so I will check out that documentation

    Fantastic build, love your truck. Body roll makes it look like RC car to everyone else on the road 😁 I drive a long travel +3.5 5th gen t4r, but Ive been really eyeballing 1st gen Sequoias. I spent a bit over twice as much as you on my kit, built the truck myself, but with boight parts. I'm picking up a welder 😅

    Looks great man! (i know this was a year+ ago for you but I stumbled across your build). Union Valley Reservoir is 30 minutes up the road here, so rubicon videos are both fun and hilarious. It's great to see people enjoying ones own youth stomping grounds and funny because everyone seems to have this mystical view of "The Rubicon Trail", it's like any good off road experience, there's easy parts and parts that most just have to go around rather than through, but the place is kinda special. Next time you head up, take a day and head up to echo lake and hike to the summit. It's 8000 feet of granite elevation and you can see from Lake Tahoe to the pacific mountain range on a clear day.

    • @treehouseoffroad
      @treehouseoffroad  Před měsícem +1

      That hike sounds amazing but do you have any tips on mitigating altitude sickness?

    • @Will-W
      @Will-W Před měsícem

      @@treehouseoffroad well airplane cabins are pressurized to 8000ft typically so most people can handle it pretty well, if the rubicon is 6000ish so there's not too much difference. If you don't want to train cardio with a gas mask or can't acclimate quickly, just enjoy the walk. One of my best friend's growing had a family cabin on the lake and we would climb straight up to the flagpole as teens in about an hour, but if you want a safe adult hike you can go the long way round on the trail at a walking pace. There's a decent forest service lodge and parking at the entrance. It's definitely a top 10 mountain tops in CA, like Mt Whitney and Half Dome at Yosemite. Bring a camera, walking sticks, sunscreen, and water.
      A good writeup of the hike/climb can be found here, (it was a 5 hour round trip for the author) totallyunqualified.com/2018/08/echo-ridge-traverse/
