RL Stine is Robert Lawrence Stine Jovial means “cheerful, jolly” Bob is another name for Robert Hence Jovial Bob Stine. Looks like he used that name for fun books. Loved the video
Very much so. He was also Jovial Bob Stine before he ever wrote as R. L. Stine. He helped create a kid's magazine called BANANAS distributed through Scholastic in the 1970's and 1980's wrote a bunch of kids books well. Here in America, even before Goosebumps or Fear Street, Stine was still a huge part of the book fairs that would permeate elementary and middle school libraries .. to promote literacy. I still have a few Jovial Bob Stine books in my collection from when I was young, as I was too old by the time the GB series came out.
Spaceballs the Book was actually sold through one of the school book sales where I live, probably why they tamed down the language. That's how I got my copy and it was the only way I could experience Spaceballs after seeing it in the theater until we got our first VCR a year later.
So that's where it came from. I thought it was a Mandela effect when I rewatched Spaceballs and there was no mention of Dark Helmet being allergic to raspberries. I remember reading the book when I was a kid. You've helped clear up one tiny little mystery in my life. Thank you.
I love when people claim that "something that raunchy wouldn't be made now", while weekly TV shows like Family Guy and South Park are far raunchier and still churning away. Brilliant narrative!
The renaming of Pizza the Hut to Pizza Margherita is to play off an actual Italian style of pizza that very popular there. Not quite as pithy, but at least it references something familiar.

Italy might not have had a Pizza Hutt at the time, but Star Wars Jabba was called Jabba The Hutt just like in the US, so the joke would have made just as much sense.
I saw this movie for the first time in middle school band class. it was end of the year so the director just put a movie on and low and behold this masterpiece was presented. I was 12 at the time and I was on the floor. I'm sure now a-days someone would have complained but hearing "assholes" in a movie for the first time was amazing.
About to cook dinner. Tired. Kitchen was left a pigsty. Desperate for something to watch wihile I cook so I can relax. Then there it was, another Minty upload! Thank you buddy!❤
I had the book as a kid. I got it from my school in one of the quarter annual or monthly or term book fares from Scholastic or Puffin. I also had the books for the movies Willow and Superman IV too.
Spaceballs is one of my favorite comedy films. Not only because I love sci-fi films, but because it's truly funny and very well made. I used to have the novelization too. Wasn't as good as the movie but it was amusing. The soundtrack is great, too.
You know, Minty! Growing up in Canada, I always thought that it was so cool for John Candy to be cast in the role of Barf. It was almost like a furry version of his Johnny LaRue character, from the S.C.T.V. days. Of course, I knew who most of the actors were, but Candy stood out above them all. If he hadn't played it so well, I honestly think that the rest of the movie wouldn't have come across so well.
I found it really interesting how so many parts of it were like aspects of Star Wars movies that came out subsequently. It made me wonder if there was collaboration or they just like taking from it.
As a grade school kid, I only got to see Spaceballs commercials on TV, and never got to see it in the theater. I don't remember why - I believe because my parents said I was "too young". Back then, it took a very long time after the movie exited the theater to arrive in movie rental shops. Sometimes 6 months to 2 years. Spaceballs, unfortunately, was one of those that took a long time to hit the VHS rental market. I wanted to see it so bad, but the only option was that I saw the novelization in the Scholastic book club order sheets we used to get in school. I distinctly recall ordering Spaceballs: The Book, along with the novelization of Adventures in Babysitting. I don't think I ever actually read the second book, as for me it was pretty much just filler to get the Spaceballs novelization. I read that book at least two or three times, before the movie ever became available to rent. And yea I was quite surprised that idiots became a**holes, among other slight differences. I do recall the book had two instances of a swear word substitution - the word was something along the lines of "fur-sch-lug-in-ger". I likely don't have the spelling quite right, but I really do believe the novelization was really targeted at the younger pre-teen market that was too young to see the movie, but was nevertheless excited by the commercials and marketing. I always believed the differences were just improvised by Jovial Bob, but perhaps not?
2:38 How many years had Minty been waiting to drop his silly toilet humor pun that "Brooks was happy for George Lucas to Play with his SpaceBalls"? LMAO
Pizza The Hut wouldn't be called Pizza Pepperoni in Italy, as pepperoni means (bell) pepper in Italian. It's only salami in English speaking countries. But yeah, Margarita doesn't make sense either.
Spaceballs is amazing. Moranis was hilarious in this movie, but John Candy's Barf was my favorite character. "I"m a Mog, half-man, half-dog. I'm my own best friend."
Funny story about this movie: I saw Spaceballs way before I ever saw Star Wars. Star Wars came out several years before I was born, but I was just about the right age to catch Spaceballs when it was new. I think they used to show it on HBO a lot, and my parents taped it. When I was about 6 or 7 Star Wars just happened to be on TV at my babysitters house. I was so confused by it because it was a lot like Spaceballs, but also it wasn't. So I ran and told my babysitter about this weird movie that was on and she couldn't help but laugh as she tried to explain the concept to me. Of course, at that age, the idea of a parody and the massive cultural importance of Star Wars were way over my head. But looking back now I can see why she found it so humorous.
One thing that I've always found interesting is that in Star wars, it is established that the light and dark sides of the Force are equal in power, but in Spaceballs, it is clearly stated that the upside of the Schwartz is more powerful than the downside.
To this day, I still remember seeing this film with my mother in the theatres. When she saw Pizza the Hut, she swore that she would never eat pizza again.
Enjoyable video, I love Mel Brooks and especially SpaceBalls, but… Please please please do something about the audio quality during your on-camera shots. I can recommend a good cheap microphone for you if you need…
I remember the first time I watched Spaceballs was on tv with my dad back in the 90's and we both had a laugh, though being on tv alot of the jokes were censored so my dad actually bought a VHS copy of Spaceballs for our family to own. I watched that tape so many times I wouldn't be surprised if I wore it right out, lol.
You really have to admit the flow of the movie is perfectly on point. The jokes come in a wave like fashion. Chuckle chuckle laughter Chuckle chuckle laughter Chuckle Chuckle LUDICROUS SPEED GO! And then it goes to storyline to give the audience a few minutes to relax. No joke is objectively funnier than another but a million moments to reference the movie. The main jokes like Ludicrous speed, the combing the Desert and the Schwartz fight are easily some of the most iconic comedic moments of the time… and few have come since to last the test of time.
You’re the best. Seriously. You have been the go to guy for movies I should watch. I’m addicted to movies, watch at least 2 a day. Thanks for a place I can rely on to take me back to these movies!

Jovial means “cheerful, jolly”
Bob is another name for Robert
Hence Jovial Bob Stine. Looks like he used that name for fun books.
Loved the video
I kind of assumed it was a space pun as Jovial is jolly and the outer planets are the Jovian planets or giant gas/ise planets.
YOGURT!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Minty, you da MAN!!!
"One million space bucks, we can pay off pizza the hutt."
Or else pizza… is gonna send out for you
I still love the movie. I remember watching it in the theater when I was a kid.
Give me paw! 😅
"Barf, we're not just doing this for money. We're doing it for a $h*tload of money!"
@@ladyv5655 "yeah, your right. And when your right, your right, and you your always right."
I'm a mog.
Half man half dog.
I'm my home best friend.
Best freaking line ever
I was about to write this quote, glad to see it’s here among the first comments and its impact on others , thanks friend, and thank you Minty for another fun and informative video.
"I'm my OWN best friend"
"stop looking up my can"
Nurse Gretchen was also in Starship Troopers. The actress (Brenda Strong) played the captain of the ship that Carmen (Denise Richards) pilots.
Daphne Zuniga was smoking hot, I also liked her in the Fly sequel.
maybe you could do a video on Tommy Boy or some of the other Chris Farley movies
Little Nicky!!!
Maybe you could do one on actors doing the same stupid shtick, like Sandler. Or on that stupid turkey song that I will never be able to evacuate from my mind. And yes, you are surrounded by assholes
I have a copy of that book. Megamaid said, "I don't do windows."
Always wondered what happened to Rick moranis. It seemed like he was in a lot of movies and then just all of a sudden at some point you never heard from him again
He retired to be a father.
His wife got cancer and they both agreed to give their kids a normal childhood
A movie I will stop and watch every time I am channel surfing.
May the Schwartz be with you, Minty.
"Evil will always triumph, because good…is dumb."
One of the best lines ever uttered on film.
I figured the thing in his mouth was supposed to be his tongue.
Italy might not have had a Pizza Hutt at the time, but Star Wars Jabba was called Jabba The Hutt just like in the US, so the joke would have made just as much sense.
One of my favorites back in the day and one of Mel Brooks funniest. Well made minty.
"May the Schwartz be with you."
From what I'm hearing I'm glad we got the version we got.
You've gone to plaid with this one, Minty! TYVM!!
About to cook dinner. Tired. Kitchen was left a pigsty. Desperate for something to watch wihile I cook so I can relax. Then there it was, another Minty upload! Thank you buddy!❤
Just met Bill Pullman over the weekend he is such a fun person to meet. I also performed part of the Independence Day speech for him..
_Pizza the Hut_ was one crazy acid trip 🤣💀
You know, Minty! Growing up in Canada, I always thought that it was so cool for John Candy to be cast in the role of Barf. It was almost like a furry version of his Johnny LaRue character, from the S.C.T.V. days.
Of course, I knew who most of the actors were, but Candy stood out above them all. If he hadn't played it so well, I honestly think that the rest of the movie wouldn't have come across so well.
I bought a copy of Spaceballs: The Book from my school book fair when I was nine years old. I wish I'd kept it!
Spacey one, Minty. 😉
Great Video, as usual, Minty. Keep Em Coming
LMAO
"...let Lucas play with his Spaceballs.' - My God man, you've done it!
It's really nice that Mel Brooks allowed George Lucus to play with his Spaceballs.😅
A minty fresh video for my morning evacuation!
Pizza The Hut wouldn't be called Pizza Pepperoni in Italy, as pepperoni means (bell) pepper in Italian. It's only salami in English speaking countries.
But yeah, Margarita doesn't make sense either.
You always have great vids. Thank you buddy
Spaceballs is amazing. Moranis was hilarious in this movie, but John Candy's Barf was my favorite character.
"I"m a Mog, half-man, half-dog. I'm my own best friend."
Good job Minty on the videos lately, Your absolutely killing it, love these kind of videos.
10:12 whoa! I never realized this. I always thought the whole “last prince in the galaxy” thing was because had rejected all the suitors. Nice!
I distinctly remember the spaceballs book being sold at my elementary school book fair.
I'm just saying this
If they would of gotten John Williams Too Spoof his own music, That would of been the icing on the cake!!!
That should be would have.
Perhaps this should be Spaceballs 2: The Search for the Original Script.
You really have to admit the flow of the movie is perfectly on point.
The jokes come in a wave like fashion.
Chuckle chuckle laughter
Chuckle chuckle laughter
Chuckle Chuckle LUDICROUS SPEED GO!
And then it goes to storyline to give the audience a few minutes to relax.
No joke is objectively funnier than another but a million moments to reference the movie.
The main jokes like Ludicrous speed, the combing the Desert and the Schwartz fight are easily some of the most iconic comedic moments of the time… and few have come since to last the test of time.
as an adult i cracked up when i finally realized prince valium’s name relation to him always yawning. 😂
Great inside information into the SpaceBalls that never was. I love the one we have.
Many thanks as always Minty🤘
You’re the best. Seriously. You have been the go to guy for movies I should watch. I’m addicted to movies, watch at least 2 a day. Thanks for a place I can rely on to take me back to these movies!
Fantastic as usual Minty
“May we meet again in Space Balls 2. The Search for more money” lol 😆
I don't think I ever realized that they were using Transformers merchandise in that scene, that is awesome!
You're videos are only getting better and funnier.
