John Candy died way too soon, but in his time on earth he has easily put himself amongst the legends of comedy and acting. Rick Moranis honourably took a hiatus from acting after his wife died and needed to be the one to raise his children, the other side to that is he also is a legend that is missed on the big screen. There will never be another John Candy. My favorite Candy movie is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, because he comes out of character and we get to see the real John Candy. When he said "You want to hurt me? Go ahead, I'm a big target..." Very profound and touching. Loved it.
Anyone who is not blown away by the comedy genius of Rick Moranis, John Candy and Joan Rivers... Well I just don't understand you. I was 10 when this movie came out and saw it in theaters. My life was changed forever. I remember leaving the theater thinking "I've never seen funny before. But now I have."
It's 2023 and here we are: almost 40 years after Spaceballs was released and it's STILL one of the absolute classics and entertains millions of people. That's something, IMO, that very few people can say about their work...Mel Brooks is definitely one of them!
Oh yeah, that sound effects guy, err Winslow ...something or other...the hilarious guy on the various Cheech and Chong movies, the Jimi Hendrix knockoff at the psych ward, the crazy in the welfare office entertaining the old timer. He's conspicuously missing.
I have fallen and i can't reach my keg Exactamundo! There ARE plenty of movies that really could use a remake. Films that have a good enough premise and plot but was executed very poorly. Oh...Hmmmm... Now, I have an opinion about the Pink Panther remake though. Don't get me wrong, I really liked most of the ones from the 60s. Well, mostly the ones with Peter Sellers' "Insp. Clouseau" . They were my favourites. However, the remake with Steve Martin had me laughing non-stop thanks in all to Martin. So for me, I can't complain there. But please don't let that detract from your main point. You are not wrong with what you said and I agree whole heartedly.

I thank Mel Brooks for bringing Bill Pullman's comedy chops out into the open. He only played supporting roles, but the comedy he brought was the linch pin of every movie he was in after Spaceballs.

I can do the same from Disney Star Wars. But that farse was a sick joke and far cry from Spaceballs... Disney must learn to make decent parodies in the future.
Sadly, Mel Brooks hung up his Directors hat after 1995. Hes primarily done voice work since the 2000s. At 91, I don't think his health would allow another movie to be made. Unless he was willing to sign off as a consultant and let another team handle a sequel. But with a few key actors that have passed away and who retired from Hollywood. We'd be missing out on John Candy's Barf, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix, Dick Van Patten's King Roland, and assuming hes up for it Mel Brooks as the President of a now defunct Spaceballs city. I don't think the sequel would be appropriate to have the original characters return but surely they can do a sequel spoofing the star wars prequels. Or even better idea, spoof how everything is being rebooted and over CGI in Hollywood. I dunno, I just don't see a product of 80s satire working that well in today's Hollywood.
What would you want to spoof about TLJ? A spoof needs to mock something and take it out of proportion. The movie already did that, but not in a good way.

This is what is missing from movies today. So much enthusiasm and creativity. You can just tell how much Mel Brooks genuinely loved making his movies and put his heart into everything he produced and made sure the actors and production team were part of the movie family rather than just lording it over them. Also notice they're casting by ability for the roles rather than only star power to make a great movie that stands the test of time rather than just a short term audience draw. They had some big names in Spaceballs, but some of the main cast were relatively unknown too.

Elon Musk made it, it cost 500 dollars :) www.boringcompany.com/flamethrower/ . He loves spaceballs, and keep making references to it, like the name of the speed on his cars.
"The Boring Company? WTF is that?!?" I thought until I read that he owns a 'tunneling' company. $600 for one, not sure if they can still be ordered. To tell the truth, I just started saving up as soon as I found it was not a joke.
I've watched this movie more than i have actual star wars. It'll never grow old and probably my favorite. I hope mel does another spaceballs someday to make fun of trilogies, sequals, prequals, reboots and remakes. He can call it Spaceballs: A saga story
Haha. u really think this is 1 of the best movies ever made??? Yeah right. It's up there w/ The Godfather & One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest😂 SB is ok but Weekend @ Bernie's is a better movie imo
Damn.... I wish John Candy was alive for this and Rick Moranis was available to make an appearance but understand how he has his personal fights and priorities, he put the right things first after all, his family and his kids
I sent in my 12 proofs of purchase from Spaceballs: The Breakfast Cereal for my Spaceballs: The Flamethrower. It has been 30 years and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. LMAO
I was spending the weekend at a friends house when Rick Moranis came over, my friends father being a photographer with his studio in his home... this was after the success of Little Shop of Horrors and Ghostbusters so we, as kids, were fans. His dad took some kind of instant shot (like a Polaroid, but not a Polaroid, an instant photo all the same) and Moranis autographed them for us adding “Hope you enjoy Spaceballs !!” With no internet and no idea what he was talking about, our parents were collectively a touch concerned... 5 months later *Spaceballs* came out and we understood it then !!! (I still remember the Commodore 64 games we played that weekend... M.U.L.E., a sort of turn based resource management game and a space shuttle simulator that was *hard !!)*
This was my favorite movie as a little kid. Keep coming back to it. Saw it before I saw Star Wars. Sci-fi comedy like this and red dwarf is a neglected concept. What’s weird about this movie is that it’s funny but I also kind of unironcally love it as a straight story.
Dude, you're putting it up against Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. This is an incredibly funny movie on its own, but deciding which one is best out of all of his movies is extremely hard. Hell, most people hate it, but I still love Dracula: Dead and Loving It. If I had to pick one though it would be Young Frankenstein, which was a groundbreaking masterpiece at the time.
I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, but still, the place you live in is just that more drab and empty that they're gone.
He super duper withdrew from the limelight to raise his kids. After his wife died, I guess he had this epiphany where he suddenly wanted to put 110% of his efforts into raising his kids (who he has never named in interviews). He backed _way_ out. I think he just wanted his kids to have as normal an upbringing as possible. Instead of constantly having to deal with other kids who would see their dad's face being on movies/TV all of the time. I guess even though he turned down a chance for a cameo in the latest Ghostbusters movie, he said he is open to acting again; it's just that he's super selective. Jesus. I wonder what he even looks like now. Would love to see him in something at least once more. :)
this movie was my favorite growing up, granted i didnt see it in 87 (I was born in 84) but i loved it in the mid 90s when i was kid. Cant get movies like this anymore. thats for sure.
John Candy was pretty much the real life version of his most lovable characters, in particular Barfolomew. I've never heard anyone say bad things about him and he has never said bad things about other people either.
I had same thing happen to me.... only other movie that did that was Monty Python and the Holy Grail .. Oh and the 'R' rated "Cinderella - the Musical"
daphne zuniga got that perfect spielberg, lucasarts, donner look, she would have been perfect to join the goonies, gremlins, star wars,etc....i can even see her doin well in john hughes movies.
I grew up fatherless. Out of all of the movie stars of my childhood ( Born:1976) I would have chosen John Candy to be me Dad. Especially the character he plays in Great Outdoors. That's a dream dad. Darth Vader is a close second though
First time watched it back in the very early '90s... and still I am enjoying every minute of it! This is how comedies/parodies should be like. A true masterpiece.
i still remember for christmas in 2005 i got a portable dvd player and a copy spaceballs just before i went a car trip and i watch the movie back to back probably 9 or 10 on that trip and it is still one of my favorite movies of all time
Nobody really talks about how great the theme song was for this movie. It riffs off the Star Wars theme to give you the idea (if the scrolling credits didn't do it) that they're mocking Star Wars. And if *that* didn't do it for you, they made sure to put laser effects that are so out of place. "We're doing a space movie... *I N S P A C E ! ! !* "
28:28, probably one of the most accurate spacecraft U-turns ever featured in a movie.. Change direction, apply thrust. None of the silly aircraft banking stuff featured in SW and others.
My dad got me into Mel brooks movies and I loved them as a kid and I’m looking forward to showing my kids one day the joy I got watching these amazing movies
Nick also worked on The Rose in 1979. He was a camera operator. And Michael D. O'Shea was camera operator on Spaceballs and went on to be the cinematographer on Mel's last two films.
Probably the only appropriate followup to The Last Jedi is just a shot for shot remake of Spaceballs. Don't forget they have to kill off all the original characters in it.

The kids love this
Elon Musk made it, it cost 500 dollars :) www.boringcompany.com/flamethrower/ . He loves spaceballs, and keep making references to it, like the name of the speed on his cars.
Soon soon.... Tesla rebranded it
"The Boring Company? WTF is that?!?" I thought until I read that he owns a 'tunneling' company. $600 for one, not sure if they can still be ordered. To tell the truth, I just started saving up as soon as I found it was not a joke.
Oh, they sold out in 4 days for 500 dollars each.
Bill Pullman, as a serious actor in a comedy, is great.
I love seeing serious actors doing comedy!
This, and Robin Hood Men In Tights, was VERY funny!
One of the greatest movies ever made, still love it after all these years!
Definitely agreed!!!
I've watched this movie more than i have actual star wars. It'll never grow old and probably my favorite.
I hope mel does another spaceballs someday to make fun of trilogies, sequals, prequals, reboots and remakes. He can call it Spaceballs: A saga story
Making fun of poor George Lukas? That is wicked and evil. He had a harsh life.
Not nice!
Haha. u really think this is 1 of the best movies ever made??? Yeah right. It's up there w/ The Godfather & One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest😂 SB is ok but Weekend @ Bernie's is a better movie imo
@Kenneth Boyer""And I can do what other Robin Hoods can't, speak in a British accent" Savage moment in film
LMAO
thunderwalker2000 the fact that you’re still waiting for it may be the most depressing thing I have ever read.
You should call Spaceballs: The Customer Service Hotline
@@slappy8941 LMFAO!!!
That’s awesome lol

M.U.L.E., a sort of turn based resource management game and a space shuttle simulator that was *hard !!)*
orion khan you have such an amazing life...why brag?
This was my favorite movie as a little kid. Keep coming back to it. Saw it before I saw Star Wars. Sci-fi comedy like this and red dwarf is a neglected concept. What’s weird about this movie is that it’s funny but I also kind of unironcally love it as a straight story.
Masterpiece! This is how you do spoof movies! Mel's best? Arguably.
Mel makes the best spoof movies, then get Al Yankovich to score a spoofed soundtrack.. instant masterpiece!!
The earlier spoofs were the best ones. Although I did like this one and Robin Hood.
The line about not being crude is what spoof movies that came after this forgot.
Mel Brooks movies are the funniest movies HANDS DOWN
26:27 "You don't go to work, you go to art." --Mel Brooks
They don't make 'em like Mel Brooks anymore...
Hell, they didn't make 'em like that back then!
A shame we couldn't hear what Rick Moranis had to say. He stole the show hardcore!
He was probably busy with his family.
John Boy he's at home, with his two children, living a quite life now, didn't say what the future holds though, we can still HOPE !!!
CybershamanX especially since he shrunk them
this movie was my favorite growing up, granted i didnt see it in 87 (I was born in 84) but i loved it in the mid 90s when i was kid. Cant get movies like this anymore. thats for sure.
Mel Brooks. Its good to be the king. Comedy legend. Saw this before star wars. Still funny as f
John Candy was pretty much the real life version of his most lovable characters, in particular Barfolomew. I've never heard anyone say bad things about him and he has never said bad things about other people either.
saw this as a child in the theater and laughed and laughed and i was too young to get half the jokes but had every line memorized for years
I remember watching this ( The FIRST time !! ) with friends at the 112 Drive - In !!
I had same thing happen to me.... only other movie that did that was Monty Python and the Holy Grail .. Oh and the 'R' rated "Cinderella - the Musical"
Exact same thing happened to me too. As I got older and watched it over the years, I understood the jokes and the movie just got better and better.
One of the best movies EVER!
2:56 "You only spoof the things you love." :)
daphne zuniga got that perfect spielberg, lucasarts, donner look, she would have been perfect to join the goonies, gremlins, star wars,etc....i can even see her doin well in john hughes movies.

Dammit! Beat me to it! Nicely done.

I first watched Spaceballs as a kid, so when I watched the real Star Wars, I was wondering, why Darth Vader wouldn't take his helmet of :D
Awesome! I didn't realize Ruthless People was Pullman's first movie! He was a natural! He killed it! I liked his stuff the best. Good for Bill!
I grew up fatherless. Out of all of the movie stars of my childhood ( Born:1976) I would have chosen John Candy to be me Dad. Especially the character he plays in Great Outdoors. That's a dream dad. Darth Vader is a close second though
We watch once every year - it's a family New Years Eve tradition.
So sad so many of them aren't around in late 2019. I think Mel will be hailed as one of the greatest comedy geniuses of the 20th century.
Robin Hood might be his best parody of all time! I love 'em all.
First time watched it back in the very early '90s... and still I am enjoying every minute of it! This is how comedies/parodies should be like. A true masterpiece.
I had such a crush on Daphne Zuniga back in the day
i still remember for christmas in 2005 i got a portable dvd player and a copy spaceballs just before i went a car trip and i watch the movie back to back probably 9 or 10 on that trip and it is still one of my favorite movies of all time
Kevlar Moneyclips
Nah, that’s very obviously a day my fiancé shared her adderall prescription. Makes me chatty
One of the best movies ever and makes me laugh no matter how many times I have watched it!
Dear lord Daphne Zuniga looks amazing in this.
Amazing!
Greg She's always amazing! :-)
I liked her better with her old nose.
newguy90 New Nose??? Hm... I didn't realize (or notice), but still... :-)
She was great on Melrose Place.
How good was the movie? We are watching a 30 min Documentary on said movie.... let that sink in
What I love about this movie is that even though it’s a spoof, you really don’t think of Star Wars because it has its own story.
28:28, probably one of the most accurate spacecraft U-turns ever featured in a movie.. Change direction, apply thrust. None of the silly aircraft banking stuff featured in SW and others.
Somethings wrong with the radar sir. I’ve lost the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps.
Mel Brooks is a comedic genius! But, this has to be my favorite movie of his. I am a fan of all, though!
My wife and I, all the time, are saying "I felt a disturbance in the Schwartz". We just can't help it! XD
Sounds like a fun marriage

this was 2005. Fun Stuff Daphne was so hot in the day. May still be for all I know.
Daphne Zuniga is really gorgeous. That nose job was a good decision.
Don't forget they have to kill off all the original characters in it.
an SJW parody done by Mel Brooks would be the most amazing thing ever this must happen
Spaceballs is a all time classic and till now has never been beaten in creativity and good placed jokes.
No not even galaxyquest did this.
Brooks is simple and stays a genius master of the genre.
Still a classic.
Thank you Mel Brooks.
Still one of my favourite movies of all time.
Daphne Zuniga is still hot lol
You're right! I love it when you're right. And when you you're right, you're right. And you, you're always right!
Yes she is. Even in Fly 2
never was
she really is
@@epajarjestys9981 Always was
I so miss the days of movies were made just to entertain you and make you just enjoy it with out worrying about politics. I was 16 when it cam out and have watched it dozens of times and will watch it many many more times and love it each and every time!
if you're worried about politics with every movie you watch, then that sounds like a personal problem
I recall as a young kid I couldn't tell apart Star Wars and Space Balls. When the movie aired on TV, I would ask my brother if it was the one with the big helmet...
My favorite movie of all time! My best friend and I have matching "May the Schwartz be with you" tattoos
