    Oooh, you are one spectacular photographer! Thanks for sharing this with us. One or two minor points: most mirrorless cameras have silent shutters, not quiet ones. Also, many have IBIS which would have helped you on those low-light shots. A high repeat rate would have helped you with those places where you wanted to show motion blur on arms and legs, but not faces. Finally, good flexible autofocus in low light would have helped.

    The Leica Q has a brilliant EVF, but I still long to cradled an M, look through the viewfinder, compose and shoot. After all a huge part of Leicas legend was built on the back of the classic RF system, I consider it a rite of passage to research and field test, if you are passionate about photography. Understanding the system fully can only make you better informed about the pros and cons, and yourself as well as the machine at the centre of the experience.

    Matt - how do you manage to use capture one without the compare photos, inability to synchronize settings across multiple photos, no radial filter, no history, no tagging to reject and then delete multiple photos, no way to easily mask for sharpening,

    • @kenbot77
      @kenbot77 Před 5 lety +2

      Maybe you need to have a try on a modern version of Capture One mate? I believe most of what you've said can actually be done in Capture One, just differently.
      For example, to VERY easily mask for sharpening: you just make a new adjustment layer, name it and mask it however you want (brush/gradient/fill), then adjust the sharpening adjustments just for that layer only, done. For tagging to reject, then delete multiple photos: first step is optional, (I colour tag everything I might want deleted in Red, then select all Red) delete all you might want deleted, they all just go to the Session Trash, where they aren't actually deleted until you go and delete them from Trash, either individually, or as a group, very easy. Instead of 'Synchronise Settings' you can copy and paste the settings from one image to as many other images as you want in one hit with just 2 shortcuts (Cmd+Shift+C, Cmd+Shift+V), and you can also go through a list if you want and check/uncheck all of the settings you want/don't to be copied to all the other images. Like I uncheck 'Crop' etc, and just paste White Balance/Highlights/Shadows etc to the selected other photos in a session, done.
      I'm not sure what you mean by "compare photos", do you just mean to put them up next to each other? If so, that's easily done, also you can mark one to stay up as the reference/hero shot and keep changing the other one that pops up next to it. I'm not sure what the radial filter is, and no there's not an individual history on each photo, which is nice, but most people undo something pretty quick if they don't like it and just move on I guess.
      One of the best differences I found between the two, besides the image quality, is the use of "Sessions" in Capture One. This is SO MUCH easier than having to wrangle the Catalogues in Lightroom! Missing images and moved folders to external hard drives etc all just create mess with the catalogues in Lightroom. With Sessions, all the relevant info just stays with the session folder, and goes with it to whichever external hard drive or other location with the photos, no lost links and lost settings that are on a catalogue somewhere. You can just go and open the session up on someone else's computer with Capture One and it's all right there. Capture One has Catalogues too I believe, but I don't think most people use them as much. I can't even tell you just how damn useful that is if you're shooting tethered, or Digi-Op-ing for someone else across random computers, or having to hand over a photo shoot as people saw it on the screen that day!! Lightroom really should add Sessions as a workflow option.

    • @Yosser70
      @Yosser70 Před 5 lety +2

      Dude, just download version 11 and put a bit of effort into learning to use it! It's so much better than LR now. You don't need history because of the way the layers work. As for a radial filter, well, every filter is radial because they can be applied with a round brush ;) It does everything else you mentioned and does it better than LR.

    • @RG-jv2nv
      @RG-jv2nv Před 5 lety +4

      The first click is quieter than the normal shutter, the idea is that you push down on the shutter, hold it, then release the shutter (making the 2nd click) a more oppourtune time or when you've smothered it in your coat to deaden the sound.
      Very limiting implementation, but technically quieter.

    I'm curious why the Leicas cost so much. What exactly is it that separates them? Materials? Support? Pure brand name? Is it like a Louis Vuitton Bag or a Bentley? Overpriced dead cow with a name or overpriced supreme function/comfort?

    • @scriptosaurusrex
      @scriptosaurusrex Před 5 lety +1

      Overpriced 'made in Germany' marketing, with successful targeting at those who are largely over compensating for something else/status symbol.
      It's funny as the first leica (leitz camera) was the first 35mm camera effectively invented for portability and ease of use. Ernst Leitz didn't want to bother carrying massive field cameras up hill sides for landscape photography. Things have changed in the leica ethos there...

  • @PYYYYYY

    But still, considering "bang for the buck", I wouldn't exchange it for my Sony A7 Rii, which now with the autofocus adapters, nailing focus with manual lenses is a breeze. Yes, I saw you review of the auto focus adapters. 👌
    Also, with so many other tasks, the articulated screen of the Sony is a deal breaker.
    The M10 will fit on my 1960s Reprovit copy stand, which is great, but other digital M-mount cameras also win the day with their articulated screens. I have several film Leicas from a 1930s Standard, iiif, and M bodies M3 etc etc up to the M-A.
    I am waiting for a digital M with a 40+ mp sensor in a body with the physical dimensions on the M2/3.
    Stay safe. The trip to Butan was informative and inspirational. There are some very special temples off-the-tourist-track in Thailand, that would also interest you. It's my backyard. 😎
