Leica M10, M10P and M10D Review

  • My first CZcams upload, my first vlog and not just any upload, a Leica M10 review, or why I got into the M system again 7 years after giving up on the Leica M9-P for my photography needs.
    This video is what happens when you sleep 3 hours and decide to go running around Paris unprepared and unscripted. Forgot a few things and repeated a lot of stuff.
    Video made with Malik / mkjourney on CZcams
    The Leica M lenses are small and the colors, sharpness and micro contrasts are simply perfect.
    The dynamic range of the M10 camera RAW files is great, the auto white balance is really good. High ISO is really good. Can't complain for my needs, it is perfect.
    This camera is so good I bought two Leica M10 within a few months.
    All 3 Leica cameras have the same 24 megapixel CMOS sensor, the thumb wheel I programmed on the M10 and M10P for EV comp, up to +3 or -3 on either side in 1/3 increments. Which I seldom use as I tend to not use the aperture priority mode, in A for shutter speed.

    wow! that's the best review of the M10 I've seen so far. it's entertaining, instructive, and you choose great locations of Paris. I wish you would display the pictures a little bit longer, we don't have enough time to look at them. one more thing ; I would love to see you reviewing the CL. keep up the good work !

      Thank you Alexandre, greatly appreciated. Good point about leaving the pictures a little longer, there are a ton of photos on my Instagram too which is more suited for photos @PatrickColpron
      I will definitely review more cameras and lenses in the future, but only cameras I currently use in my current photography workflow or would integrate into my workflow, the Leica CL is not the kind of camera I would ever use. The SL on the other hand is.

    Lovely review! I look forward to more of this style of video. Good approach to reviewing Leica cameras as well. Everyone keeps trying to justify the expense without stopping for a moment to judge the shooting experience and that's what you're getting (apart from the lovely lenses). Damn that 21 is nice btw! Keep them coming sir, fantastic content.

    An excellent and enjoyable vlog thanks for sharing your thoughts on the M10 variants.
    I don't own a Leica but hope to at some point, I couldn't agree more about the size of some mirrorless lenses, the idea of having and using a mirrorless system was for me getting a reduction in size and weight yet the opposite is happening as size and weight of the lenses just grows and grows, all the benefits of a smaller system lost.
    With a Leica system out of my budget at present my aim is to get a Nikon/Leica M adapter and start using some M mount glass on my Nikon Z7, this will give me a camera/lens combination that is nicely compact and discreet, yet more than capable of delivering some top quality results.
    Looking forward to more vlogs from you.

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 5 lety

      Thank you, greatly appreciated - yes the size and weight of the lenses keep growing and that is odd with some mirrorless system. There are alternatives and some lenses are smaller - but when desiring faster apertures and pro-zoom with constant apertures at 2.8 the lenses, are not smaller than their DSLR equivalent in a lot of cases.
      Sony does offer great F/4 zoom lenses - yet - I prefer fast, small primes, Leica was the only logical choice for me :)

    Patrick. Thank you for this video. One of the best M10 ones out there. I moved to a M10 about a month ago and sold all my (heavy) Canon gear. I was really, really worried about the move but I haven't regretted it one bit. I bought a second hand M10 and a single second hand 35mm f2. I couldn't afford the new prices (or the second hand really!) but it's been brilliant, liberating even. I'm just a (serious?) amateur and I know they are very expensive but if you can afford it.... wow.... I've just come back from Cannes and then Jordan and the images are epic. Very little post processing required - pretty much straight of of the file (maybe lift the shadows a bit if you've exposed for the highlights). I was worried about going back to a manual focus camera - I shouldn't have been - it just works.
    I've never left a CZcams review ever before and it may be my last.... so thanks again... if this was your first vlog I look forward to more.

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 5 lety

      Hi Tom,
      Thank you so much for the review, greatly appreciated.
      You are correct - there is very little post process required and it is so easy to bring back details from the shadows when needed. The dynamic range of the files is great, the colour rendition is perfect.
      When I had an M6 and an M9 - I used the 35/2 incredibly sharp and small, absolutely loved that 35 Summicron, a great way - and a wise decision on your part was buying second hand. Most Leica shooters take absolute good care of their Leica cameras and lenses.
      They are a true pleasure to shoot with because they are not cumbersome and a Leica M kit remains lighter than a DSLR kit for sure.

  • @bradmaestas5206

    Nice comparison! I also find the 35 and 50 Summiluxes to be incredible. I have been shooting film Leicas for many years. My first digital M was the M-D and I recently went to the M10-P. After so long without a screen it's nice to have one again. I have it set for no preview so it's the best of both worlds.

    Wonderful, enjoyable video. I love it. It was a Leica lens that sold me on the Leica M system, too, a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, at a nearby Leica dealer. Nikon and Canon had no 50mm lens to compete with THAT look. I tested the Summilux on a pre-owned M9, and a pre-owned M Type 240, then decided to buy the lens, before I knew which body I could afford. I crunched the numbers, and bought a new M10, with the Summilux, as a retirement gift, for myself. That was in April 2018. Zero regrets.

    That was a great review!! You hit a chord with me when you mentioned how other mirrorless systems are also small but the lenses can be huge. I’m thinking of Fuji in my case. Owned an xpro2 for a while with several lenses. I laughed when you talked about some people having a ridiculous amount of lenses. I never understood that either. Most people really only use one favorite lens. I’m going to get an m10 and my heart screams m10-d. Your review helped me make up my mind.

    This is an excellent video, with some really useful comments / opinions about the M10 series. I’ve used Leica film cameras for decades, and heavily invested in bodies / lenses. I’ve also used Nikon film SLRs extensively as well as DSLR, and agree about the size issues, so I keep coming back to Leica. I have an M9 which I use a lot, but will be getting an M10 so this video was exceptionally useful - very many thanks for sharing!

    Wow! Love your review Patrick - thank you. I've just ordered and am awaiting delivery of a Q2 but you've now got me wondering if I should keep saving and get an M instead! It's all so much money but you only get one life as they say!

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 5 lety +3

      Hi Martin, thank you greatly appreciated.
      Cameras are very personal choices. I know a couple of people (3) who purchased the Q a few years back, it is all they use.
      It is better to have the best camera you can afford now, instead of waiting until you can afford a more expensive camera.
      The Q2 is, having tried it briefly, very light and responsive. It is a camera you'll always have with you. It is so light.
      I personally prefer the M with interchangeable lenses, and you are right - only one life..
      Keep in mind my M cameras are a business expense, I can write them off, and because they are a business expense I save on the 20% sales tax too.

    • @martincowell572
      @martincowell572 Před 5 lety +2

      Absolutely agree Patrick. Realistically the Q2 is the most I can afford right now and it's more than a match for my photographic abilities - I can't wait to start using it. I've been an admirer or Leica for 20 years or more but apart from having a D-Lux for a while (not really a Leica) I've been using Canon, Nikon and most recently the Fuji X-Pro. This is my first proper foray into Leica territory. Who knows, perhaps in a few years time I be able to get myself an M with a couple of lenses but in the meantime I'm just going to shoot the hell out of the Q2.
      By the way I like the look of the straps you use. Are they by Artisan & Artist please? The other thing is the spirit bubble in the hot shoe. That's a great idea and I can really see the benefit of it. What make was that please?
      You've got to keep the vlogs going - I will definitely be looking out for them as I love your style. It's also great to see some lovely shots of Paris again - especially Place de Vosges. It must be 15 years or so since I've been there but you've inspired me to go back.
      Have a great weekend and keep up the excellent work.

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 5 lety

      @@martincowell572 You will love the Q2 the resolution is stunning and the lens super sharp.
      Correct the straps are Artisan & Artist model Acam 100A I buy them on Amazon
      The spirit level is from a company in Ontario Canada, called Jobu Design - I purchased these levels back in 2012, just checked their website and looks like it is still available: www.jobu-design.com/Dubble-Bubble-Level_p_58.html.
      I find spirit levels to be better for how I shoot than digital levels - except when using a tripod - then the digital level comes in handy

      I’m in the same boat, Q2 or M10p....47 megapixels, autofocus, macro, leaf shutter, half the money....vs 24 megapixels but interchangeable lenses and manual focus. It’s the size of the M system, camera and a 50mm on it, a 28 and 75 in the bag, takes up no room and travels all day no issues.

    Sweet! I use the system since M8, sharing your thoughts. I really like that you know what’s great about it and have some reference shooting other systems and formats. Still you seem to be not religious about it. It’s a tool and a very comfortable one in comparison. I go even further in size by saying i decided to buy the smallest lenses they built, crons and elemarit( especially the 28)
    Those lenses are tiny light and rendering superb. The new luxes are all superb and the 21 probably the worlds best lens but huge for M standards. If you need more light then cron get a noctilux, other then that the smallest is the best in my opinion.
    Good luck with you channel mate, nice to see a great review nice comparison and true words other then just prayers of the redeemer camera.
    I don’t buy that the lens of choice if you could one have one ☝️ would be the 21.

    Fantastic Vlog and your First! Leica M, well addictive, once you use one there is nothing else. in the 90's, I borrowed one for an assignment and had to get one, My first was a M4-P with a 50mm Summicron. I own a few now but by far the M10-P is my favorite. Like all my previous Leica's, it is the one that is always with me as it should. :)

      Hi Gregory, thank you for your comment, the M10-P is fantastic, the M10 line up is the best digital M for me, not even looking at the M11, I also love the MP for film

      I’m hesitant due to the fact the prints from the M10P are stellar, especially on Canson Infinity Platine photo rag.

      @@gregoryvarano8002 Hi Greg, my Leica kit has evolved since I made this video, I now have all five M10 models and two Leica MP, I have been mostly using the Leica MPs for the last few months. I truly love the experience of shooting film, being way way more choosy as to what I shoot and my compositions. It is a more satisfying approach to photography for me. I waited 15 years before purchasing my first Leica MP, I bought my second Leica MP a couple of weeks later. I say go for it - just shop around first to know the price of film stock in your area and also compare labs where you can get your fill processed, printed from the negative and HD scans made. Once you factor that cost in - you will have a better idea of what you are getting into cost wise. In my opinion, it is well worth it.

      @@PatrickColpron ok I broke down and purchased a mint second hand Leica m4-2 with a 50mm F2 Summicron v3. Both have been CLA'd and in top condition. I sold my M4P last year and my M7.I missed my film Leica and now it is back and I couldn't be happier. There is something truly special using a Film M camera, the feel the sound or lack of due to the fantastic the shutter ( of course the M10p is quieter but also electronic not mechanical as is the M7). Most importantly the results!

    Thanks for your review of the Leica M system Patrick! I am a new millennium shooter having only ever shot digital starting photography only in 2003. I started with Nikon, Canon DSLR’s which I did some paid weddings and then to Leica M8, then back Canon, to Fuji, Sony A7 series and then the Leica MP240 in 2017, adding a T (701). i see in the Leica M sensors a 3D pop and sharpness i cannot describe. Even the M is sharper than T. The T showed the same sharpness though when i used the huge 24-90SL with a non-existent AF on the T. There is probably some truth in using native lenses: M lenses for M rangefinder sensor.

    You highlight one of the main reasons Leica M10 camera's interest me. They are the only modern digital FF cameras that due to the lens sizes combined with the body size and shape are actually truly compact enough. good looking enough, and blend in enough to be a take everywhere camera. I love my D800 but it's not really a camera that can integrate into your daily life like a Leica M can. Even something like an A7 is bigger and more obtrusive, even if you put adapted M lenses on it. Not to mention the EVF which for me is an automatic no buy and the fact that they are way more fragile. Plus the M is just fun and unique camera to use. It's a real photographers camera. The lines, the shape, the durability, the feel in your hand, the Leica is a work of art in itself. Which makes it a joy to use and something you can really appreciate for a visual artist like a photographer. It puts you in a totally different and more artistic mindset than using the latest neato gadget camera that does a lot of fancy things but is just a utilitarian tool with no soul. That they managed to keep the soul and feel of the M cameras in the digital transition is just amazing engineering that I really appreciate a lot.

    Thank you for the best M10 comparison vlog ever!
    I am an amateur with the Sony a7S and 3 lenses but I love my Fuji X100V more. Why? Because it has an optical viewfinder and looks like a rangefinder and allows for "Leica-like" composition using the OVF but it gives me the reassurance of a small EVFin the lower right-hand corner that shows the actual focus. I hope to some day have the money for a Leica and your vlog convinced me. I hope my Fuji X100V will be my "bridge" to the true rangefinder that Leica is.

    I wish Leica had the guts to make a b/w + color M10-d as their new entry/floor to the digital M series. Not only more basic in features, but price as well. That might recapture some of the audience lost because of the sensor corrosion fiasco in many M8/M9 cameras.

    Your music is good. When I first got my M10 I was angry. The noise was noticeably worse than my a7III. The low light performance also seemed to be an order of magnitude worse than my Sony. I've since learned to love my Leica for what it is, and I use it almost exclusively these days.

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you. I never had a Sony I am sure the a7III is better at high iso, yet I can't complain about the noise level of the Leica, it is not that bad compared to the Nikon cameras I had and the Canon cameras I now have but then again the a7III is also on another level for low light. I still shoot the M10 and still love it yet seldom use it in low light. And like you for photos it is pretty much all I still use for my photography

    Hi, I really liked your video. I shoot with the m10 and the 35mm f1.4 Summilux and the camera is so much fun. I watched your video twice, I liked it so much. The simplicity of the m10 and the Leica glass with the image rendering is the best. I liked the way you took those low to ground photos with the reflections in the water. Did you focus peak focus in the cathedral? I hope to add the visoflex in the future. The camera comparisons was excellent to. Thank you.

    • @PatrickColpron
      @PatrickColpron  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Thank you Richard, means a lot. The M with a 35 is a perfect match. I did not focus peak when I make photos close to the ground for reflection I pre-focus using the rangefinder and also pre-set my exposure, in this case the focus was easy, simply set to infinity. A spirit hot show level, or bubble level help a lot in getting the shot level, which is best got puddle reflection. I have a few Visoflex, but so seldom use them, I'd avoid getting one. Unless you make a lot of photos at night where I find it useful to set your exposure, these days I just use live view when I beed to yet do so very seldom. The M10 remains the best digital M for how I shoot and still use them to this day
