    Since it's so hard for people to understand why people buy leicas: User experience, simplicity, massive lens selection, small 1.4 lenses, small body, full frame ( i love fuji but there IS a difference in the way the sensors/lenses render an image.) the look, build quality etc. Being inspired to shoot by your camera is a very valuable thing. If you're happy with your fuji, sony, canon, nikon then thats fucking great! keep shooting, but just because something isn't up to your preferences does not make it a bad product.
    It's like buying a classic car, it runs slower, doesn't accelerate as fast, doesn't have aircon etc, but the experience is still so fun. Focus less on what others shoot on and just enjoy shooting.

    Thorsten’s Leica reviews are definitely personable because he actually uses each Leica he reviews. Like many of us, we don't read the manuals that are accompanied with the camera, we always wing it and just want to start using the camera...photography basic is fundamental to all cameras, but Thorsten gives us a personal tour of the camera. I picked up a Leica Q, and reviewed Thorsten's review and had a better knowledge of the proper or better usage of said camera. Same with Thorsten’s review on the M240...which I picked up later on....after listening to his M10 review, am I considering picking up an M10....all my Leicas (Q, Vario-X and M240) cameras produce the same Leica image quality which is unique to Leica’s....and the reason to purchase a Leica.

    My Dad bought a Leica M3 in 1964 and taught me to use it (I was 12) and I was hooked. It was years before I could afford to buy my own Leicas but I am so happy I pursued this hobby and obsession. Although I broke down and got a 240 and a 262 a few years ago, I still miss using my M6s, but that is just because I refuse to shoot Ektachrome because I am still mourning the loss of Kodachrome 25, 64, and, yes, 200. I might just get an M-10 or an M-10P after watching this. (Yeah, I have all the lenses, both M and R). I've shot many You Tube videos with my 240 using my 28mm/f2.8 or my 35mm/f2. They have that undefinable Leica look despite being only 720p. Leica really should put 1080p video in these cameras they offer with video.

    I agree with what you are saying about the screen not being flush and it sticking up and down, should have been inline with the rest of the back, I mean it should not have gone into the top and bottom plates, guess its less noticeable on the black chrome version but man I wish Leica would have sorted that out, they were just lazy about it, I know the M has the sensor sitting deep in the body so they stuck out the screen out at the back but the technology is there to have slider and more compact electronics. I am all for that M 3 like design, I am sure Leica will button that screen to make it appear more stealthier in the future M designs. I just ordered mine - silver M10-P knowing that I would not like that screen sticking out so much and that huge bezel all around, but hey I just could not wait any longer. I do appreciate the slimness in body design and the ISO dial, an M-D version of this beauty will be defiantly inline with the older M film cameras for sure!

      One of the problems for Leica and other camera manufacturers is that screens are now being made for mobile devices mainly, and when you design a camera you have to go with what is being made. So the screen is not made for the M10 specifically, basically. If it was plane with the body, we would care less. Sure it will happen in Leica M11 or M12. Or we go without screen as in the MD10 :-)

    Hello Thorsten, great review as always!
    I noticed you said the Black & white files of the M10 look a bit flat. This is very interesting: i was hoping to get the same "flatness" than the M9 Monochrom straight RAW files (with color sat to zero) and after many tests i realized that is exactly what i get. The same very workable RAW files than my beloved Monochrom M9 but half a stop brighter to my eyes.
    Is it something that you would say is correct?
    Those of the M240 were already very contrasty and did not have the magic of Monochrom 1 unless tweaked a little bit innosot processing.

      The Q and M10 sensors are not the same. The M10 sensor has a more 'classic' look much towards the M9 in colors, but more elastic. The Q sensor is very elastic and has a more modern/digital look. In practical use I think most users would be able to gear the final look of their edited pictures to a similar look. But the point being; it's not the same sensor even both are 24MP and full-frame.

    Thanks for a great review! For now I will have to stick with my M8 until it dies. The M8 is also unique - ASP-H, first digital Leica, great B&W, thin IR layer on the sensor, 24mm frame lines, etc. Also, the M-D is also very unique with the missing screen. I do like the iso dial, but as a hobbyist, cannot justify spending the $ yet. I am not saying the price is too high, only that I can't justify it currently. Might just be me..... If you buy a camera and think it takes great photos, doesn't it still take great photos 5 years (or more) later? Heck, I just sold my Canon 20d with a broken screen a few weeks ago and I was still happy with it until the screen got damaged.

    I've got an M240, it's a great pleasure using the camera for sure. But there's a big big disappointing issue and that is its horrible high ISO capability. Simply you can't go above ISO1000 (one thousand) if you care about the colors and noise. I took some photos with my Nikon D200 and the image came out better than the M240! I think if you want a good Leica M series just directly go for M10, believe me it'll save a lot of your money.

    I currently have the M6 the M8 and X-Pro 2. I prefer the colors from the M8/9 sensor over the newer Leica sensors. However the M10 seems to have returned the CCD sensor look apart from the M9 appears to produce warmer reds whilst the M10 has punchier yellows. Skin tones on the M10 seem slightly warmer too. Has this been your observation also? I am considering selling all my equipment to get the M10 but not sure if I should keep my M8 and X-Pro2 until prices on the M10 come down some more. I love my M8 but I also like my fuji as a complimentary camera. I'm not interested in the other M cameras because I like the CCD look you mention, nor do I care about videos or touch screens etc etc. Is the M10 worth it?

      Leica M9 and Leica M10 are very similar. It's almost that once you got an M10, you discover how cool the Leica M9 is.
      I am lucky that I got the Leica M9 when it came out, and then the next M240, then the M240 so I got to experience them all from new. So traveling the route of M9 and get an M10 or M11 later is not a bad idea.

  • @alexanderkrasotkin7441
    @alexanderkrasotkin7441 Před 4 lety +1

    Dear Thorsten, many thanks for the review. I shoot with Leica M9 for years, absolutely love the colours from it, but it limits macro work. The idea is to shorten the focusing distance of Noctilux 1.0 from 1 m to say 0.5 or 0.3 m to get closeups of flowers. With M10 I can use macroadapter and Visoflex 020 to be able to do it. Question is, can I do do macro with M9 and Visoflex II or III and possibly some special macro ring like 16469/OUFRO?

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 4 lety

      Yes, macro is much easier with the EVF of the M10 and M240. The 90/4 macro kit fits on the M9 with an angle finder and all. Very cool, but not the same precision and versatility as it's only a 90mm. With EVF and a macro adapter you can make all lenses into macro on the M10

    Thanks for the review and the humor. One question - you mention "classic" metering mode - but unless I'm missing something (which wouldn't be a first) the M10 offers only "spot" "center weighted" or "multi-field" would spot then be the M10 equivalent of "classic"? Thank you. And PS, you are 1005 right, once you start, you just want more. It's a dangerous and slippery slope :-)

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 6 lety

      The Classic mode is where the three small eyes inside the bayonet measures the reflections from the white/grey stripes on the shutter curtain. In that mode, there is only one metering type, which is an oval approximately 1/3 of the frame in the center (center-weighted). In Advanced Mode, the shutter goes up and the metering is performed by the sensor image: In that mode you have spot, center-weighted and matrix. I generally prefer and recommend Classic mode so you don't have to use the sensor and battery; and further you don't have to listen to the shutter going up and down.

    • @ndt7692
      @ndt7692 Před 6 lety +1

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  Před 4 lety +1

      Start with a 35mm or 50mm - whichever is most you. Then next question is if it has to be f/1.4 or f/2.0 (or f/0.95 or f/2.8) and that is also a matter of price. Most tend to end up with light-strong versions like the f/1.4, so if one already know one want that ... often better to go straight to that than try to economize with an f/2.0 that will anyways be exchanged later :-)
