I just sent 300 pics I took yesterday of a flying bee next to a flower to the email address you provided, I expect compensation. And praise, of course
he didnt say it had to be bees in focus. so yeah. well done.
You can pick up your compensation at 123 Fake st, Alberta, Canada (it's not what it seems, it's French).
All your reviews are so thorough and interesting at the same time. Thanks so much for all the effort you put in which in turn helps us select the camera that best suits us
You thought this review was thorough?
@@brocktonbensch7992 It isn't a menu training tutorial, or a camera to camera comparison. So with that said, what do you feel is missing?
Thanks for the photos and the overview of the new M. I have the M10 Monochrom and, as pointed out in the Red Dot Forum video on that camera, the high ISO performance of the new sensor (which was developed parallel to the one in the M10 R) allows you to set the camera to always use a faster shutter speed to avoid the effect of camera shake without giving up anything on image quality. I've tried that out on the Monochrom and it seems to work just fine. Also, as you noted, the sensor reflects the advances in technology since the previous 24 MP sensor was developed and that alone may be reason enough for some folks to want to upgrade to the new model. I agree the Visoflex is getting a little long in the tooth and I try to avoid using mine. I mainly use the rangefinder, which is kind of the point anyway. For walking-around photography I simply stop down and use either hyperfocal or zone focussing. Finally, it is also worth noticing that both the M10 Monochrom and M10-R are actually lower priced than the other models.
Awesome video! I laughed out-loud 3 times! You gents are such great reviewers!
When Chris started saying "Welllllcommmme baaaaack..." I had to check to make sure I didn't have the playback speed set too low.
It's the manual focus rangefinder experience! Intros are slowed down and enjoyed. Roses are stopped by and smelled.
I literally wanted to make this exact comment and here it was haha
Why I always like this feed; concise and a real honest appreciation of the pros and cons.
Some banging shots here Chris, specially the abstract ones like the puddle at 5:34. I have to say, the times I get jealous of you guys testing cameras is when you try the new Leicas and Hasselblads.
Agree on puddle shot
Some very nice photos! No one else does reviews and takes nice pictures too. Love the M10-R, will be buying one. That 50mm APO-Summicron is ridiculously good, it's difficult to find a better lens in the world.
Nice review. Love the honesty and humor. Keep it up 👍
As usual, an honest and frank review. Well done.
Great Job Chris and Jordan. I'm shooting an old Leica iiif and it has a separate magnified focusing window like a telescope for critical focus but that feature was removed from the M cameras, real shame it was perfect.
Jordan everytime I see the S1H, I want one. IC its your fav vid camera. I gotta get one.
Thanks for the great reviews. I've never shot with an M, but sometimes I have a feeling that's where I'll end up. It's my density.
i imagined your voice as i read your comment 👌🏼 love your channel
I believe you meant destiny.
@@GrandHuevotes Ha, thank you 😊 We should be able to leave audio comments. Actually, no that would be a very bad idea.
@@TL-xw6fh Thank you, you're right. If I could go back in time I'd change it.
@@ChrisBoland An M is quite a dense camera... hefty, anyway. ;)
Looking forward to the quiet shutter -off episode.
Thanks Chris. Another good review.
*DPReview* Love and respect
Two random questions... does this camera allow for a cable release?... does it have a pc sync output for flash... so I could use studio flash and visoflex at the same time?
Thanks Chris for slowing down the intro. After all these videos it still took me a few repeats to figure out what you were saying. lol
Thanks for the review.
Gotta get the Panasonics in there on the silent shutter shoot-off. Love my G80's soft thud, coming from an X-T1 (satisfying but not quiet) and D600 (..I mean it's an SLR).
Is the shadow booster built-in to the body or a software adjustment in post production? If built-in, is it variable adjusted. Thankyou for your insightful review. John
I love how simple these cameras are. I hate how unobtainable these cameras are.
Love the channel Benj. Is there enough here for a pro like you to upgrade from the M10?
Benj Haisch I love the idea of the Leica but so unaffordable. So I decided to train for using a Leica in some future time and my training is as follows. I took my Nikon D3500 (the cheapest Nikon DSLR) added a Nikon 28mm f2.8 D Lens and every control is then set manually. The speed setting is controlled on the camera along with the rangefinder focusing. The aperture is set on the lens and light control is by using an old lightmeter. I found the photography slower but more creative and focusing was surprisingly easy. I love the 42mm view I get with this focal length which fits well with the urban subjects. Since starting this I have also purchased (used) the Nikon 28mm f1.8G lens which I love to but the full manual process is worthwhile. That’s me done.
Jay Mark Stocks I don’t even own an M10 yet 😬 still on those M240s but looking to upgrade
train.tram.bus yeah, the whole rangefinder focusing system and small form factor is what I’m really after. Leica is the only company that really offers one. I know Fuji makes the X-Pro3, but it’s not the same :/
Where's the nikon z5 review? can't wait for Jordan's comprehensive review on that :P
Great camera. Shooting with a Leica is a unique experience. I've done it. Moved on. And the current price/value compared to the competition means I'll not be back that way again.
I feel like the majority of M users would prefer 24 megapixels with better low light. If low light is still great and Leica plans on using this sensor for more products, I guess it would make sense as an investment, but it kinda seems like they’re quickly jumping on the “more is better” bandwagon, when the M system has notoriously represented the opposite.
That’s the dilemma for Leica M. Range finder camera is good for nothing but candid photos. And high resolution sensor would make that very difficult practically. It’s never a “the sharper the better” story for Leica M in it’s legendary history.
@@bananabear009 I think Leica rangefinders are great for travel and landscape photography, too.
I agree with you. For many Leica users, it’s not about the technical sharpness or even the colors, per se. It’s actually about the imperfections, the fall off of light , the rendering of shadows, and how, when used with intention, these elements make for special images. 24mp is, so far in my experience, the upper limit for letting these elements naturally express themselves.
More megapixel does not mean worse iso performance. On 100 pixel level yes, but if you look at images as the same size, there is absolutely no noise disadvantage by more megapixel
Michael Fuchs I completely agree, although it’s not the iso performance that higher megapixels normally affects. More megapixels on a same size sensor means that those megapixels are smaller and capture less light per megapixel on said sensor.
Excellent, and excellent !! If there was a Comedic Photography award, Hugh would get my vote ... edit that, YOU would get it, Chris !
Excellent review
Why the end of the video is shot on a Fuji camera? :D
Dope Jared impression
I've owned 4 Leica M's over the years. M8 (with IR Filter) amazing colours and I could focus more consistently then the AF on Fuji X cameras. M9 FF, even better colours, M240 terrible skin tones. but it had video, which was what my wife carried about me shotting our kids doing stuff. (so I didn't get, all that money and it can't shot video). And M3, still have it, it's such an amazing thing in that hand and fun to shot and nostalgic to shot with. (I bought this used in 1989). But now today Im kinda stoked by the EOS R5/6, that focus speed and the lens line up means I can get shots I could never of got before and can't get excited by this anymore. Though if the M11 has a Fuji Xpro3 hybrid VF and IBIS I'll be excited.
That intro! :)
Did anyone noticed 8:31. It looks like a IR filter has been put on a Leica 35mm f2. Why did they do that?
It would be great if you could add this camera and the q2 to your Studio Shot Comparison !
Uhh what happend with the Panasonic s1 at 4:05 seems little madness of IBIS
I swear I laughed at that intro skit for 20 minutes.
I've never had my hands on a Leica M10. Does it really worth all those money or it is just a status symbol? I have a Nikon Z6 and it seems to me already a pretty solid camera, can anyone give me some clues on were those money go (apart from the brand)?
😆 amazing website and astounding Avenue. Last time I used a Leica was in the 1990s. Now days I'm not sure if is even worth it with all the tech in the new cameras.

Were you shooting handheld? Because the image stabilization makes me feel sick... is it only me?
Love ur vids bro
Great review! you guys just saved me 20,000 Dollars that I didn't have anyway.
Actualy, Leica were the FIRST to remove the low pass filter with the M9.
I picked up a M10 "Betriebskamera" and a Leitz Canada 50mm f2 Summicron-M at the beginning of the year. I'm happy without IBIS's cost and complexity. Leica probably would have to introduce a new lens mount to avoid vignetting: I don't mind a bit of vignetting, but I don't want it randomly located because of where the sensor happened to be when I released the shutter. I let ISO be what it needs to be to give me minimum shutter speed 1/50 or I put marksmanship training to use to control breath and movement. Or I use a tripod. Or a brick wall (got a lovely nighttime shot of the Port of Oakland that way, at Jack London Square a few years ago, with a Fujifilm X100s. My wife wanted to know why I didn't include her in the composition: "You can't hold completely still for 3-secs., babe"). Or...
I hope they’ll still release 24mp Ms. I think that’s the sweet spot for day to day photography which is still a huge part of the Leica user base.
You're absolutely right. Most people who buy cameras post the pictures on CZcams, Instagram or Facebook! They only need a camera with less than 2MP do that. Indeed, very very few photographers require more than 16MP, and hence why the forthcoming Sony will have only 12MP!
Leica will continue to produce the M10-P with 24MP sensor. They view the M10-R as an additional option for those who want the higher resolution, for example for landscape photography. Check out the two videos Leica published upon the release of the new camera.
I mean for when they release the M11. It should be 24 or less with an R option later down the line.
The +/- ring is not good in this Leica EVF, why can Leica make the ring work like the SL2 EVF ?
Sounded like a honest review.
Without the in body stabilization or similar, these high megapixels will never see the lights unless we got a proper triple or very high shutter speed. Well... Maybe my M-P 240 will last for another 5 years now :D
Hey! Whats that camera bag? Looks fire
“Send your samples images to... “ *Nearly spits tea out*

I do hope the introduction of M10R means cheaper M10s on the second hand market
AHaHaHAhAhahaHahAHaaA... ah...
You’re serious?
Cheaper M9s. M8's free.
I didn’t get the addres in the beginning, anyone?
I am surprised by the quality of Lumix S1H, that's incredible
what you call „the stupid foto“ is the best one. when will you have your coming out as an artist-photographer and leave behind you documentaryphotographie? also the flower picture reminds me Wolfgang Tillmanns. you do allready fotos but you dont want to think/feel them.
Nothing has really changed in the RF principles since the introduction of the M8. Well the RF has got an update with the M10 but still there is the uncertainty if calibration is accurate and/or has changed. And with 40MP all these issues become even more noticeable.
I would at least have expected a newer EVF arriving with the M10R and a better (bigger) battery, as well as the newer Maestro processor. This is a VERY expensive camera and for that price that needed to be changed.
I feel I have to wait for the M11 to get the tool I expect (expected) but not sure if it is worth the wait anymore ....
I liked to be teased that way in the first 7 seconds 👍

I’ve been watching (and loving) you guys from early TCS days, and other than the Leica Monochrome review, it’s obvious that neither you nor dpreview enjoy shooting with Leica. And that’s fine. Most people don’t. But for those who do (like me), I’d love to get the perspective of a Leica expert so we can learn whether this camera has value for those already invested in the M system. What I would have loved to see is a shot for shot comparison of the M10 vs M10R, including the post-processing (because it looks like the M10R files are a bit flat SOOC). Maybe next time.
Yes agree Josh. The side by side would be great.

Just let Leica M being it itself
It might be lack in some "technical" aspects but it still is Leica M, which is the single most legendary camera line that has been consistent since the 50s.
the sample photo make me feel like i have myopia suddenly having perfect eyesight
40mp sensors don't make sense on a rangefinder, which is a basic optical alignment device. If you have to resort to an EVF to nail focus, the analogue aspect is expensive decoration. Also, the examples look like every other digital camera file, no Leica magic there. It'll sell to people who think only Leica know how to make a camera, obviously.
Borderlands Only Leica know how to make a camera? Actually, what I’d really like to have is a Nikon S3 with a 40-something-megapixel sensor, not that I imagine they’re ever going to make such a thing. But that same-size viewfinder was perfect for right-eyed users who liked to have both eyes open when shooting.
@@SkepticalSteve01 I'd like my Contax II with a 10mp 3CCD sensor.
Well the 'Leica magic' from the film days is still the lens, but if you want a digital file immediately and selectable ISO in a rangefinder form factor, then it's either a Leica or old Epson.
You are also making an assumption that every situation or user wants to "nail focus" at shallow depth of field.
Some users don't care about a little blur, over even desire it, and some users aren't shooting at f1.2 all day.
@@Ruylopez778 If you want to zone focus at smaller apertures, there are much less expensive ways of doing so. Back button focus, or use a hyperfocal distance. Rangefinders aren't accurate compared to modern AF where high resolutions can show the smallest errors, nor do they frame as precisely.
Borderlands As it happens, what really endeared the S3 to me was the luscious amount of spherical aberration the 5 cm f1.4 Nikkor supplied wide open. To my sorrow, a burglar removed that tool from my collection a few decades back. I shall have it back someday though, either attached to a mirrorless Z-series Nikon, or via an adaptor ring to an M-something or other.
Ah oui, l'Avenue de Gofoqhierselphe - c'est tres jolie!
If you don't win a Pulitzer for that photo I will eat my hat. LOL
Excellent review. I had no less than 9 Leica’s at one time with 4 being digital. However the M9-P and Monochrom had sensor issues and even though the M9-P had no signs of degration the value plummeted. my Leica Q is with Leica for dust cleaning off the sensor - a design fault but I had to pay. So that’s going the same way as the M9-P and mono0chrom and I will have the X1 only. That and 5 Leica film cameras which have never let me down. So for over £7,000 for the Leica M10-R, I will give it a miss. Great review though.
Panasonic Lumix S video is really nice quality!
great camera. 2 please.
Cool Review, but curious, does he actually like the camera at all ? (More flower shots please ….)
What’s a 55mm apple?
It's a Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2.0 ASPH $8795
The trouble for me is that the rangefinder is the defining feature of the M camera but it is not fit for purpose in a high resolution camera. They may have improved it from the M240 on but precise focussing with a fast lens wide open remains hit and miss. For a camera with this resolution, I would like them to do the unthinkable, replace the viewfinder with the EVF from the SL2.
LOL just 2 days ago I took a dozen bees-in-flight shots at near MFD wide apertures. I couldn't quite get the address to send my shots? 8)
Anyone know what the market rate on a kidney is these days?
probably a camera that performs remarkably well for architectural work
Who & where do we send our range finder bees in flight photos to again?
You could get a couple x-pro3 for the price
Chris, can you please repeat the address i can send my leica bee photos? 🤣🤣🤣
The Leica M series are interesting beasts for sure. I keep lusting after one, even though when the M10 came out and I demo'd one from the NYC store during PhotoPlus in 2017 (finally being able to afford the body and three lenses). I made the decision to stick with my Pen-F's and small M Zuiko Premium primes for my walkabout kit because I am so spoiled by autofocus. The M10R continues to psychologically tug at my heart, which confuses my analytical brain. I think Hugh Brownstone said it best (summarizing & paraphrasing here) "I want one, but it makes no sense". Maybe it's time to sell a bunch of the old medium format film stuff and at least pick up a used first gen M10 and a used 50 just to scratch that itch... I knew I shouldn't have watched your video, Chris :-p (actually, thank you, it was well done!)
Very entertaining 😆
Love it, Leica is well deserved!
I greatly admire the analog Leica cameras (as I admire other analog/vintage/limited edition models), and if you really want to have a great camera and shoot film, maybe a limited edition that belonged to a photographer who inspired you, then a $8200 price may be justified, maybe - though I wouldn't pay it myself, but ok, to some people it might mean a lot and it is a piece of history.
But when we're talking a digital mirrorless system in a retro camera body, let's see if we can justify an $8,2k price:
The camera looks amazing when it's sitting on a table but has poor ergonomics when you hold it and almost no custom controls, which complicates its operation, a 1 million dot LCD and 2.4 million dot EVF that comes as a separate accessory - both of these are marketed as "high resolution" on their website, but honestly, I think we all know that almost any camera brand out there offers better LCD/EVF quality for how much less?
The EVF accessory blacks out when taking photos which makes you wonder how does that work with a "burst" shot mode of 4.5 images/sec (are we serious?) I wouldn't even mention that - what is the rate of keeper frames on a rangefinder camera, and why would you even need a 4.5 frame a second feature, not to mention a rangefinder configuration limits the scenarios you could use a mirrorless system in, which makes you wonder how frustrating it can get when you realized how much you paid for a decidedly low rate of keeper frames.
I'm also willing to bet Leica does not manufacture their sensors in-house so there is a good chance they have a custom-made and unbranded Sony sensor in the camera, that probably costs around the same price point as the sensor in the a7RIII or something. But there is no mention anywhere who manufactures Leica's sensors and Leica doesn't want you to start thinking about the electronics in their cameras because then you start doing the math and begin to realize that the price just doesn't add up.
It's like they are the Apple of cameras. They'd much rather you thought of their $8200 camera as an ethereal entity descended from heaven, unmatched by competition, that will just make you a better photographer. That is simply not true. When you do the math, and add up the cost of the electronics in the camera, the cost of the camera body, the material, the paint, the lens and optics, I'm willing to bet you end up somewhere in the range of $1800 - $2000 if not slightly lower, not to mention that UHS-I on a camera of this price is simply insulting.
Leica is piggybacking on their amazing analog legacy and adding a $6000 markup at minimum to their mirrorless lineup, but falls short to impress in my book. That is also not a very healthy long-term strategy. Just look at the swiss watch industry, which is now reeling as it begins to be replaced by smartwatches. History has taught us that you either adapt or pay the price. If Leica charged around $2000 for these cameras, that would be a really attractive value proposition for someone who wants to try something different. But $8200? I don't think so. To me this is a dishonest approach towards their target audience, who may have more money than the average consumer, but that still doesn't justify this practice.
In my eyes at least, Leica's mirrorless cameras are a very confused offer, trying to cater to inexperienced but wealthy enthusiasts that care much more about the camera as a fashion statement, than what they can do with the camera, or what the camera can do for them. Also, what do you do with 40MP on a hand-held compact camera body? 40MP can be incredibly demanding on the lens, in terms of resolving details and can single out any issues with optical distortion or chromatic aberration, so that lens better be perfect.
Who is this camera for again? Well paid lawyers from Switzerland who have no time to research cameras perhaps.
Or a retired gentleman who has used cameras of most brands for over fifty years, and who still owns several different makes of camera bodies and dozens of lenses? And one who knows a great deal about cameras and their capabilities. I get it: Leica is not for you. I feel that a great many Leica users do not fit into the category of "wealthy enthusiasts that care more about fashion statements than photography". If one hastily jumps to conclusions, one is likely to land well wide of the mark.
Theres also some kid in his late 20's that turned to Leica after being tired of plastic cameras and lenses being marketed as premium lines, "compact" mirrorless systems being as big or bigger than DSLR's and as intruding and noisy as a pentax 67, but sure, only Doctors and Lawyers.
@@Gynra I see your point, and I meant no disrespect to you personally, simply pointing out the flawed business model with Leica's mirrorless cameras. If you can afford this investment and cameras have been you life's journey, more power to you. That said, what you described is very much an edge case, more than anything else. I don't know many retired gentlemen who can afford to drop $8,200 on a pocket camera, in a country where people are spending the twilight years of their life struggling without health insurance or barely making rent. Do you?
@@mateusalves9436 Plenty of cameras are built of metal and offer remarkable functionality and features very much like what you described, without costing $8,200. Just like the other gentleman who replied to my comment, you are also describing an edge case. I don't know many kids in their late 20s who can drop $8,2k on a camera, do you? Most people that age are still trying to pay for college, or doing their best to make smart financial decisions that don't haunt them into their late 40s.
@@root9065 i didnt pay 8,2k on mine, i got an used m10 for about 3 and a half grand after sellin my old gear, and at the end of the day, at that size and build quality there´s nothing Leica, maybe an m43 system, but i didnt wanna go smaller than full frame.
Lol that intro 😂
Jordan, are you testing us again like you did with 90d episode? This episodes was far below your usual standards. The walk and talk section was rather choppy, the background noises sometimes quite pronounced and the editing not super coherent. Big fan usually, but this felt a bit rushed.
You didn’t mention the autofocus performan... oh wait
The Autofocus is terrible. No one can even find the switch that turns it on.
If you need EVF focusing on Leica M, you don’t need Leica M. It’s always funny how people trying to evaluate the fish by its ability to fly.
The colour is incredible, clean, punchy (Nikon to green, Canon too red) viewing on interweb srgb so maybe the shots with red do stand out. Overall just looks really clean and edge sharp. ISO test shots clearly show better across the frame brightness on the M10 with what looks like less noise than even the playstation MkIII or the Z6. Who's it for though, the price is astronomical and all mainstream brands give you way, way more value for money. No IBIS in 2020, really?
I'll stick with my used M10. 24mp is more than enough for me, I was happy with my original X100 which was 12mp. The handling on that sucks compared to the M though.
