Jay P. Morgan has been working as a Commercial Photographer and Film Director in the Los Angeles area for more than 20 years developing an impressive list of clients from Paramount to McDonald's. Jay P.'s experience with elaborate set design and extensive lighting are key to the success of his illustrative work.
i have been following Jay P. on CZcams since his first YT video. He is by far the most knowledgeable and easy-to-understand photography channel on YT for learning. He is highly underrated and I cannot understand how he does not have a million followers. Spread the word.
I appreciate that. Thanks for being such a loyal follower!
I was thinking the same!
Wow! There's a lot of great info here. I'm reviewing this several times to grasp everything J.P. is providing here. Great video.
You de-mystified this for me, JP. THANK YOU!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
You feathered your light up in a old video and have used it ever since. Sheer genius!
Great to hear. Glad you learned some good tips!
J. P. Morgan .. simple .. he is the "KING" ❤
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching!
@@TheSlantedLens Allways .. Thank You 👍
I was just needing this! I had a shoot yesterday and the low bright sun of Edinburgh was a beauty but difficult to fight with, so we went and worked on shade areas. I'll take note of this and give it a go next time. The Battle with the Sun!
Glad you learned some good pointers! Thanks for your comment!
Awesome teacher. Thank you
You're very welcome! Thanks for your comment!
Another great video, Jay P! Love it and 'love these locations next to MOCA in DTLA with their deep chilly winter shade. What a trooper, Anaya! No goosebumps in the morning shots! ❄☃
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your comment!
Thanks for the info!
Have a good week!
You are very welcome! You have a great week as well!
You are truly a phenomenal teacher. Simply from watching a few videos after recently discovering your channel I have learned so much! I just bought my first beginner lighting equipment setup and I feel so encouraged to begin my light manipulation journey. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and putting this info out there in such a digestible way.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching our videos!
Lot's of good information. Thanks
Glad you found it worthwhile!
What a great video! Right to the point, lots of information and so very well explained. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Glad you liked it!
The HSS topic is ok, but you final notes on the Client Brief is superb and for me deserves a specific video... THANKS!
Good to hear. Thanks for the feedback!
Great tips for hiding hot spots! I will remember that in the future.
Thanks! Glad you appreciated it!
Fantastic video. I didn’t understand what high-speed sync was or why it was used before. Great info on the options for managing exposure outdoors.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comment!
Thank you!

The shutter actually works horizontally. So if you use the camera in portrait mode, it actually works from left-right. The example here is not perfect, though it explains the concept very well.
Yes, very true. And it works perfectly either way!
I found feathering the light up to be really interesting. I've feathered from the side but never even thought of up. I use a Godox AD600, but I've been seeing more and more 400ws lights being used. Do you find 400's to be a happy medium between weight and power?
The weight is not a problem and the power is perfect for working with the sun!
What is that stand kit used to create the shade for the model? I like how clean and professional it looks compared to having someone standing and holding an umbrella.
It is the Sunbounce Mini. Here is a link: bhpho.to/3PdQVl6
For $600, that Fj400 strobe is not a bad deal at all. A lot of cheaper strobes don’t offer HSS.
I took y’all’s advice from an earlier video on using an ND filter when shooting without HSS + 1/250th shutter
Good to hear. Hope it worked out well for you!
Great
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Great seminar. I learned HSS with my Nikon D7100/105 2.8 and BX500Ri, but the applications here are terrific. Thank you. (can't find the freebee portrait cheat-sheet download on The Slanted Lens site.)
You can get the download on this page with either a pop-up menu or in the article: theslantedlens.com/2022/battle-the-sun-with-high-speed-sync-for-outdoor-portraits-laws-of-light/
@@TheSlantedLens Thanks so much. Probably couldn't find it as I'm using Brave browser.. Dandy handy!
Do I understand that right, that high speed sync is not limited by your camera's flash sync speed, as it fires the flash multiple times until the sync speed of your camera is reached?
I wonder how precise it works though. If it is just a tiny bit to slow, some rows of the sensor might not get a flash and if it is just a tiny bit to slow, some rows of the sensor might get exposed through the flash twice. How is that avoided? Is it because the intensity of the flash actually forms a smooth curve, so that even an overlap of two consecutive flashes would not create a hard transition?
That is correct, but the strobes you have need the ability to be able to do high speed sync. I have never had a problem with uneven lighting in the image.
Do you ever use a variable ND filter to retain more flash power and use less HHS?
This is exactly what I wanted to ask.
It is an interesting way to work and I have done it. Here is a video about it: czcams.com/video/8Dtprk44h9k/video.html
I just bought a gopro hero 6 bundle for like 110ish online. Good deal? I feel like it was
Sounds too good to be true.
What reflector is that?
That is a Sunbounce Mini. Check it out here: bhpho.to/3IdPEXg
Where is the download on your site?
You will find it as a pop-up or in the article here: theslantedlens.com/2022/battle-the-sun-with-high-speed-sync-for-outdoor-portraits-laws-of-light/
HSS is nice but it eats more battery life than adding an ND with flash without HSS.
You would think so, but the small pop, pop, pop may not add up to more than a full flash.
@@TheSlantedLens Thanks but could you do a show on it? Full power w ND vs HSS and ND using 1/2 power vs HSS no filter.
Logically it sounds right that full power vs HSS is about the same but not all cameras sync at 250th some are as low as 160th just trying to find the best way for others. also lowering your shutter speed for using an ND.
Thanks
@@pictureeyecandy just get camera with leaf shutter
@@Chris-ey7zy True, That would be the better way.
✌️ Promo-SM!
Hope you learned some good pointers!
300 pictures for every person and 3 used pictures? seems like overkill to me even 100 is much
It really depends on your client and how many different choices they want.
has anyone ever told you that you should get your sons to work with you?
Nope. Hope you enjoyed the video!
you need to reupload and insert a seizure warning for this video
So you found the strobe flash bothersome?
