- How to use High Speed Sync Flash for Photography. I'll be shooting with a Sony a7iii and Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 lens. For flash, I'm using a Godox AD200 controlled by a Godox V860ii on camera.
Here in Florida with the strength of our sun? You have to use High Speed Sync Flash to be able to use wide aperture lenses and settings. High Speed Sync allows us to keep those buttery backgrounds with a lot of great bokeh and still have amazing skies. It's a balancing act and a skill to shoot with flash, and HSS or high speed sync is just another tool in your camera bag. Natural light is gorgeous, and when it works, it's the best, but it doesn't always work. It's great to know how and when to use the other tools such as flash.
The Godox AD200 is simply awesome and the softbox we used works perfectly. Small size, battery power for days, and plenty powerful for most portrait work.

Thanks for not using a fashion model, really appreciated. Helps me setup ordinary people to look beautiful. Thanks again.
Just to clarify the HSS thing, it doesn't actually make the flash duration shorter. In fact, it does sort of the opposite. It actually fires multiple times in fractions of a second, almost creating a modeling light effect. The banding occurs because the two curtains of the shutter never allow a fully exposed sensor for a single "firing" of the flash. The actual flash duration for even full power is THOUSANDTHS of a second, but that still can't illuminate a full frame when the curtains only expose a portion of the sensor at a time.
Subbed because you made something complex seem simple. Sometimes we get caught up in all the gadgets and auto this and that. The way you explained exposing for flash and the reason to use high speed sync was epic.
Excellent video that really explains things well plus gives side by side comparisons which are very helpful. You just got a new subscriber.
This is the best flash tutorial I've seen. Incredibly clear, practical and concise. Not flashy :)
@@Brianized hahaha
These affordable Hi speed sync strobes are a game changer. So happy to be done with ND filters.
I was already familiar with HSS but watched because you’re a local. I’m glad I did because I found your comment about banding very interesting. Thanks for pointing that out.
Simple and to the point tutorial! Derica is sweet and she even helped in setting up light.
Thank you Derica and Brian for your excellent and very helpful tutorial.
I really liked this video. Perfect tutorial for HSS. Great job.
Just got these lights as my very first lighting kit. Started watching a tutorial on how to set them up, leave the room and come back and I'm like I know them!! Oh and very helpful video:)
Best and easiest tutorial to understand for off camera flash
Great video! You explained everything perfectly and showed examples of results which is a plus! I am a canon user, however have migrated over to some of the Godox and Magmod lighting systems. It has advanced my creativity in lighting! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge . A joy to watch
The examples of all three options really made it understandable. TYVM.
This is exactly what I've been searching for ..thank you !!
Educative. Demystifies quite a lot about your equipment set up and camera settings. Thanks!
Thank you. An excellent easy to understand tutorial.
Easy to follow. Down to earth. I like it. No ego.
Great vid with clear and informative explanations. Great job!!
I had all of this gear but had no idea how to use it. Thank you for explaining everything so clearlym can't wait to try this myself
I'm exactly at same point....
Your tip about the background exposure is brilliant. Great vid and very informative. I own the godox v1 and Ad 200 pro both are great flashes.
Happy to help!
Very helpful, you have a good manner, straight forward and easy to follow.
First off, Derica is beautiful. Excellent video.I love your manner Brian. New sub for me.
Yes, she is. Very photogenic.
Nice video. Great seeing the three examples in one place with easy explanation.
Thank you so much for the video. I always thought HSS is only used to capture actions, now there is another way to use it.
@@Brianized Yes, I am trying to capture action with high shutter speed with HSS. When I switch to high shutter speed , normal flash creates black lines in image, thus HSS seems to be the only option.
@@Brianized Thanks for the advice. Will give it a try.
Awesome we explanation. Your one of the few that goes into this much detail.
@@Brianized Do you think a beauty dish would work pretty good outside instead of the soft box? I'm not fond of carrying sandbags but without them your soft box turns into a sail in the wind.
@@Brianized I look forward to it!
I love your videos man!!! you rock!!!
Thank you for this - very thorough!
Nice video! I have a pair of AD200s and want to do some outdoor shooting this Spring and Summer, so high speed sync is a must for me to learn and practice this year.
Hello... Were your ad200s able to perform high speed sync with your camera ?
Excellent video and thanks for All the information
Thank you so much, great explanation!!!
This was so useful for me! Ordered one today for my Nikon D750 and D3400!

Cool video. Thanks

Great video! Thanks!
Excellent , I am just learning this new art and this tutorial is great , thank you
Very welcome!
Thanks for the intro to HSS on Sony, time to get around to implementing it ;)
You are very welcome!
Thanks for this video !
Great job keep up the great work his video is very helpful
Happy it helped!
Banding doesn't happen on the A9 because all pixels on the A9 are read in one go, whereas on the A7III it's line by line readout, top to down or vice versa, which takes time. In a9 the first and last pixel is read at the same moment. Not the case with a7iii
Good stuff. Thanks!
Thanks alot. You just got a new subscriber. Also I just purchased the evolv 200(ad200) so I think I'll pick up that flash to use as a controller. Thanks. This was a tremendous help.
Awesome, thank you!. Hope you enjoy them.
Wow You made so easy for a newbie like me to understand thank you 🙏🏿 !subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
It is very simple and very good
Do you have a video on how to set up your trigger with the Godox ad200pro?
Hi Brian. Thanks a mil, really loved the quality of content in this video as it explained aspects of using flash that I was not aware of before. Thank you!
Btw, you really need to let me do audio post on your videos. I could really help up the already professional quality.
Thanks great work
Great video! You have a new subscriber.
You can use bare flashers too. Of course you can't use modifiers with it. I don't like to carry all that extra gear. But what u got is the future. Small and yet puts out a lot of power. Will be looking into it.
Great video nice
Thank you Sir. Great tips.
Very welcome
Great Stuff
Good video with the exception of the statement that HSS allows for the flash to be a much shorter duration. It is kind of the opposite in that it generates many rapid pulses of flash to draw it out, almost as if it is a constant light. That is how the flash then illuminated the scene for the entire span of time that small portions of the sensor are exposed.
Yes and that was corrected in the comments!
Great info thanks
Thanks for the video. The banding issue ruined some of my photos in a recent photoshooting. I will try your solution and see how is go.
when he said bad ass lens, he is absolutely right
Great video.
I have that Godox softbox. If you open the zipper and insert the light stand through the opening then attach the flash it will give you more latitude when aiming. The light quality for that softbox is good, but i don't like opening and closing the diffuser panel to get to the controls.
Brother, all i can say is that you saved my day. Thank you sir for this tutorial 🫡
nice ..keep it up
Good tutorial!
Thank you!
Super helpful
Glad to hear!
Cool video nice
Thx for video
oh man, mega sharp photos...
Is that good or bad? lol
@@CitySteadingBrews really good image quality on that camera and lens
Great video! I always forget how to actually enable my HSS as I rarely shoot HSS....
Very nice
Very well explained I have an AD200 and all the Magmod gear with a Nikon D3, works great
Thank you!!!
Although the AD200 is a great flash for many reasons, I do like the AD360 TTL for several distinct reasons...
1. The power supply battery is separate from the flash head. I can mount the at the base of the stand which gives a more solid mount - especially outdoors in a breeze.
2. I don't know if this is applicable to the AD200 also but, I can shoot the first shot in TTL and get a basic exposure (rather than guessing the first exposure) and then convert that to manual for control of subsequent shots...
3. I can use the AD360 battery to power other AA cell powered Godox flash units for more flash capability and faster recycle times...
Brian, Overall I like your tutorial; I have sent several of my students to this link to view it. Two things though: you need to review your explanation of strobe duration during high-speed sync; the visual quality of out-of-focus areas created with prime lenses is indeed "bokeh", but pronounced "bohkay". Thanks for your time.
Excellent content, well presented, and straight to the point. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
Model and assistant! Nice!
Good video
Glad you enjoyed
This channel is a hidden gem
Thank You!
Do we require flash v8602..
I think trigger will do
