High Speed Sync Flash Photography - Godox AD200

  • How to use High Speed Sync Flash for Photography. I'll be shooting with a Sony a7iii and Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 lens. For flash, I'm using a Godox AD200 controlled by a Godox V860ii on camera.
Here in Florida with the strength of our sun? You have to use High Speed Sync Flash to be able to use wide aperture lenses and settings. High Speed Sync allows us to keep those buttery backgrounds with a lot of great bokeh and still have amazing skies. It's a balancing act and a skill to shoot with flash, and HSS or high speed sync is just another tool in your camera bag. Natural light is gorgeous, and when it works, it's the best, but it doesn't always work. It's great to know how and when to use the other tools such as flash.
The Godox AD200 is simply awesome and the softbox we used works perfectly. Small size, battery power for days, and plenty powerful for most portrait work.

Just to clarify the HSS thing, it doesn't actually make the flash duration shorter. In fact, it does sort of the opposite. It actually fires multiple times in fractions of a second, almost creating a modeling light effect. The banding occurs because the two curtains of the shutter never allow a fully exposed sensor for a single "firing" of the flash. The actual flash duration for even full power is THOUSANDTHS of a second, but that still can't illuminate a full frame when the curtains only expose a portion of the sensor at a time.

Subbed because you made something complex seem simple. Sometimes we get caught up in all the gadgets and auto this and that. The way you explained exposing for flash and the reason to use high speed sync was epic.

Banding doesn't happen on the A9 because all pixels on the A9 are read in one go, whereas on the A7III it's line by line readout, top to down or vice versa, which takes time. In a9 the first and last pixel is read at the same moment. Not the case with a7iii

Good video with the exception of the statement that HSS allows for the flash to be a much shorter duration. It is kind of the opposite in that it generates many rapid pulses of flash to draw it out, almost as if it is a constant light. That is how the flash then illuminated the scene for the entire span of time that small portions of the sensor are exposed.

I have that Godox softbox. If you open the zipper and insert the light stand through the opening then attach the flash it will give you more latitude when aiming. The light quality for that softbox is good, but i don't like opening and closing the diffuser panel to get to the controls.

Although the AD200 is a great flash for many reasons, I do like the AD360 TTL for several distinct reasons...
    1. The power supply battery is separate from the flash head. I can mount the at the base of the stand which gives a more solid mount - especially outdoors in a breeze.
    2. I don't know if this is applicable to the AD200 also but, I can shoot the first shot in TTL and get a basic exposure (rather than guessing the first exposure) and then convert that to manual for control of subsequent shots...
    3. I can use the AD360 battery to power other AA cell powered Godox flash units for more flash capability and faster recycle times...

Brian, Overall I like your tutorial; I have sent several of my students to this link to view it. Two things though: you need to review your explanation of strobe duration during high-speed sync; the visual quality of out-of-focus areas created with prime lenses is indeed "bokeh", but pronounced "bohkay". Thanks for your time.
