- How do you get shallow depth of field in broad daylight without overexposing your image? Using high speed-sync gives you the power as a photographer to create that shallow depth of field look while still maintaining an evenly exposed image.
I took my lovely model Haley out to Tempe Town Lake, just north of the Arizona State University campus to use my high speed-sync in the field.
I use this lighting technology a lot in my work

Great pics, but you didn't explain anything about HSS. You just complimented your model & your surroundings.
😂😂😂😂😂✅
exactly 😂
No settings, no science... kinda bummed...
Why not read up on it? I learned how to photo in hi speed sync ( and just how cool it is!) way before I understood the technicalities of it.
Wish you had commented on the shutter speeds used for the shots. The most striking shot IMO was that of the model wearing black & back hat just after sunset. But I would think there would be no issue in using regular strobe, not HSS, because I could see the lights on the bridge - and that would mean SS of maybe 1/8 to 1/4 second.
You know what... Joe's skill is seeing beauty in that cityscape - at first look I would have probably gone meh... but it's is the photographers vision that takes the water, the ripples, the model, and bridges and puts it all together - thanks for opening my eyes to opportunity
looks like Tempe AZ to me
im a student of your work for the past 3 years... this is absolutely beautiful... your evolution of style is awesome... love how you can transition from the grunge intense style to this amazing composition of light and color ... i am an absolute fan of your work!!
Love your style, the punchy, dramatic portraits. A big fan. Thanks for sharing!
I love the results you achieved especially that last one. Almost looks like it was shot in a studio with a backdrop. I'm inspired.
Amazing stuff. Joel, I just learned about you last week. I bought one of your products. I was immediately impressed with not only your prowess but your ability to simplify and share your knowledge in an approachable manner. I can say that all my investments in learning the craft of photography will be done through you. Time to start saving up for your courses. Thanks for this video.
absolute knockout images! Another great job, Joel!
Mr. Grimes. Excellent job. I really liked your clear communication. Ms. Haley was great.
The end results were FANTASTIC!!
Thanks, nice vid. You were right, the last shot is off the charts. I'm just starting to learn about how strobes work.
Superb results - amazing work.
This was one great video, very inspiring. Thanks for doing this. Greetings from Brazil.
More great tips, thanks. I think I really like the full length white dress photo best.
Great tips! Thank you Joel.
Stunning photos!
Nice video. HSS unlocks so many things and people think it is this sort of dark magic for some reason. You sure was right about that black dress too! Wow!!! Great work as usual.
Another great one! The three important things to have...great subject, awesome background, and good lighting is pretty easy to remember. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Those pictures were great! Thanks for an awesome tutorial.
Great work as always Joel!
Stunning and beautiful work
Seriously GREAT shit, per usual. And the even more amazing thing about Joel: he's color blind.
I've always admired your work Joel. So basic yet so damn good!
Thanks, Darren!
I Googled his name with the model Haley and found this on his Facebook page...'50mm 1.2 RF lens. Shot at 1/5000th and 1.2 aperture in high speed sync mode.'
I was wondering that very thing. What were his settings? Thanks.
Great work Joel..love it..Cheers
Yep I’m sold - this is the style I have been looking for.
Awesome!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing another great video
Spectacular shots
Thank you!!
Your already so beautiful model knows how to strike posts. You are definitely professional.
Thank you so much 🤗
love the creativity. big fan
Great ideas on the water good work
How about some technical details on how to setup the camera and strobe together?
No Short cut in Photography .
It takes Years to bevome one . Buy Books and Learn like everyone else . buy his Courses . He spent 40 years to master his Craft and you want to know in one Video 😆😆😆😆😆 .
Great video and very sharp photos.
Great shots, wow! That one in black and white was so artistic!
thanks!
beautiful work!!!
Wonderful Video my friend ! 🤌💯🙏
god the final shots are amazing.
wow thanks!
Awesome shots.
Great tips and just amazing work! I wish I knew half of what you have forgotten about lighting a subject!
Results are amazing
thanks!
Amazing Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All shots are amazing
Love to see your out of the camera RAW as well. Love your work
I'm pretty sure I saw you one time at Tempe Camera. Huge fan of the work you did on Navajo Nation. Great video!
Thank you so much!
Photos turned out amazing 👏🏾 ✨️
Thank you!!
Very inspiring pictures and text. Thanks
You're very welcome
I like your compositions... The last pic is the best...
That model is very beautiful
Nice shots and BTS. I also love my Godox. I would suggest using extension head, even though you loose some power, it makes the setup so much easier.
The white dress is amazing very beautiful
It really is!
This is great!
It's just amazing!!!! Great job Joel. I really like all your work. Would you do a video about how did you retouch one of these images?
Hopefully someday
Hss in big strobes has been around for years. I remember using hss with my back then alien bees 1600 and pocket wizards. This was back in 2012.
Those black dress shots at the end!!! 😍 ' and your post processing of that background against her! - you sir at the top of art/photography! An inspiration everytime i look at your work!. If i lived in the USA i would come clean your toilets and sleep under a tree to be able to study and intern with you! 🙏
Hey Joel. I have my old Speedotron lightings and they are very special and good to me. I was wondering if the beauty will work for me
What you want to say: subject, light and composition make for a keeper!
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Your welcome
Great! Let me know if you need me to hold a reflector again. Lol...
Cool video!
Joel, amazing work! It looks to be overcast. Would you say an AD200 would work for a weather similar to this?
Thank you for your time in making this.
How in the world can people unlike a tutorial like this ?
that was not a tutorial.
easy he did not give details on how to get to this result, exposure etc
@@FBall-im8ui exactly it's just a f... vid :)
The title is "High Speed Sync EXPLAINED" It wasn't.
very nice job you doing there :) GOOD LUCK
Thank you very much!
@JoelGrimes Do you think the 24-105 RF be good for portraits? Or the 35mm macro prime would be better because it's f/1.8?
Fantastic ..thank you
Great video as usual Joel, but c'mon, we want to know why you speak of the 50mm f1.2, but then go and use the 35 instead? Or did you use both?
Great shots. It’s so hard getting those clouds in az. Gotta be prepared always.
Was a good day
You prove every time that it is not the grade of the tool that matters, but the techniques of the hand using the tool. I was expecting a photographer of your stature to use $2500 and above strobes; but to my surprise, not even close.
On the canon R, how did you change the menu to be able to see the screen when the shutter is in the 6000 range?
Awesome timing! I have a shoot in a couple hours and it’s another gray Ohio day. I have your equipment (but, a Sony ;-) ). I’m good to go! You use ttl?
Hi from South Africa 👍 like your video, just one question might be stupid one but opening aperture like 1.2 how much do you think background is important which is going to be completely blurred .
That's really up to you as the artist... Whatever story you want to tell!
The shoot was awesome thank you! Do you have a camper or van? Where does the model change wardrobes?
Absolutely stunning final pictures Joel. Just loved them. Did you shoot all those pictures with just one beauty dish?
you had told you're using RF 50mm f1.2, but the camera attached is 35mm f1.2 *may be
They look good
Great images, have no idea how you got them except you used high speed sync. Did you just trial and error and view your screen and histogram, did you use ttl, etc
Joel did you clone out the softbox in photoshop ? How do shoot without getting the softbox in frame ?
Great video but I am a bit confused. You mention that you were using the 50mm and then the b roll shows 35mm. Did you use both?
Thanks Joel, I really enjoyed watching the video.
Awesome tips Joel... I agree with you, that black dress really made her beautiful face to pop up, what it would require to replicate that kind of look with one speedlite instead?
under expose some...
wow!!
I really wish he had gone over the specs instead of just generalizing everything.... i.e.he says things like "shallow depth of field" etc. instead of being specific with what aperture he's using.
Joel said he was shooting @ f/1.2 and since it's a HSS video he was probably in 4kish shutter speed, most new lights can sync upto 8k shutter speed, just my thoughts but I could be wrong.
he stoped doing that long time ago... he has courses that he sells now online where he goes into details of the BTS ... here he just "gives away" what he is looking for and what he is expecting at an end result... all online photographers that have established themselves as CZcamsrs are doing that... maybe the consequence is that they will loose subscribers...
Joel has always been about teaching you to be a creative artist as opposed to just memorizing technical settings (which will change somewhat in every scenario).
Just use a shallow dof that is what it means. If you would need that much hand holding you may need to pay for a class.
Agreed, title needs changing. How to setup high speed sync wasn't in it.
This is good shit.....👍👍👍👍👍.......the first black and white.....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Has the AD600 with HSS and battery pack replaced you using your Einsteins outdoors?
I have been informed by Godox that the HSS with the canon R5 is not compatible is this wrong ?? I have the canon R5 but wasn’t sure if the HSS and TTL worked with the R5. Very confused at the moment as to if it will work or not
Joel don't forget to mention you have plenty of help with it being a overcast day, and not high noon f/16 ambient.
Great video and amazing work but despite what the title says, you don’t explain anything about high speed flash. I am still unclear what it is and how to utilize it.
Thanks, Joe. You're an inspiration in many ways.
What was your power settings on godox 600 ?
Great info, Joel thank you.
Question for you... I see so many photographers such as yourself using mostly female models. I have two sons and two (7 and 14 years old) grandsons. I would like to get some tips on shooting boys. So I can do a photo shoot for my boys and give them as birthday presents to their mothers.
Nice camera :) Great camera I love it :)
Camera didn't take the pic, Joel did. He could have taken the same picture with any camera you give him (he's talented)
@@akpevbe I was not saying he is not talented did I. And I think Joel can speak himself does not need you to do it for him.
@@dancetweety10 You are right, you never said he wasn't. Its just that photographers don't like cameras taking credit for their hard work. anyway stay safe bro 👍🏻
Good stuff. Could you share settings when you post?
Really awesome shots. Were they all on the 50mm?
No...some on a wider lens
Interesting and good video. Only one thing I find... "different". Joel, you mentioned the new 50mm 1.2 for shallow DoF but in the video it showed you using a 35mm lens.
I also saw the 35mm
Seriously good shoot. Love the photo at 5:51. How did you edit this???
You have to spend time learning photoshop or go buy his products
Do u think a 300w strobe is enough light to get beautiful images like this?
Superb! Was that the 50 1.2 in all the shots?
No
Loved your video. Can you please share the shutter speed for each of the the shots. Thanks.
@@joelgrimes Thank you so much. I love your videos because your teaching way is so simple to understand. I hope I can meet you for real someday. Cheers.
Cool video
Nice video
What were your camera and flash settings? And you did not explain how to do H.S.S. and how to do the exposures.
I'm going to try the Westtcot Orb with 3 Speedlites and see how that turns out
Nice. 🥰
