If you shoot portraits on location High Speed Sync (HSS) flash is a skill that can make a huge difference to the look of your images. In this video photographer Gavin Hoey compares standard flash and HSS flash, talks about it's pros and cons and then shoots some vintage styled portraits using the Gatwick Aviation Museum as his background.

Love the shots you created with HSS! Beautiful results! Wonderful video to help us understand, thank you. I just shot a job last week with HSS for the first time. It was a poolside photoshoot. I used the same lights, thankfully my Dad who has been a pro photographer since the 60s had the same light you are using so I could borrow his, he is the one that told me I needed HSS for the job.

Gavin, I've been shooting consistently for the past 2 years and although, like many, starting on a minimal budget and using my Nikon D7100 (crop sensor camera)...hard to find anyone demonstrating High Speed Sync with any crop sensor camera, I've learned so much from you. You show how having a minimal budget and space to work in can still produce great shots. I shoot portraiture and street photography and REALLY am looking to up my game. I'll be purchasing the Flashpoint equivalent in the U.S. (Godox) Xplorer 600 very shortly and this video has been a tremendous help for me and seeing your use of costume/props. Please keep up the good work and tutorial videos. Huie Dinwiddie
