- In this episode, we drop the hook and anchor overnight at Island White, Long Beach, California. Island White is one of the THUMS oil islands named after a dead astronauts. We set anchor in just a little over 40 feet of water. While returning the next day, I have a brief grey whale sighting inside the harbor. However, I missed getting it on video.

Hello again Captain. It is cool to see you staying inland and finding a cool spot. Great hook drop. And by the way, I like my Chili-Mac a bit more soupy, lol. And, yes I do over-use the word "cool". See ya next time.
Agreed. The chilli-mac was a bit thick. I omitted the milk and margarine. I did have some boxed uht milk that I could have used. May try that next time.
Enjoyed your video. Do you ever get nervous either leaving your boat on an anchorage to go into town or sleeping at night that it will come loose? Are there other anchorages along the coast like that, that are free?
It's healthy to have a little anxiety when you are at anchor. I always make to set my anchor by backing down on it, set an anchor alarm on my phone, create an anchor waypoint on my chartplotter, and perform a general anchor watch to make sure I am not dragging. If I do not feel good about my anchoring situation, I'll stay on the boat and continue to monitor whether I'm holding. I am a light sleeper and generally wake up a few times in the night so I will glance at the anchor alarm / chart on my phone to make sure all is well. Most anchorages are free in SoCal. Moorings have fees. Many of anchorages are exposed/roadstead and only good in fair weather, so it's a good idea to look at the forecast when trying to pick and anchorage.
Nice vid captain.I was at the lb lighthouse last week and saw stingrays
Nice 👍
great vids. Surprised you don't have more subscribers. Makes me want to go back to LA.
Thanks, Thomas. I don't expect to have a large subscriber base. Most of my adventures are local, weekend warrior activities. I started creating the vids primarily for nostalgic reasons and to augment my log books. I'm too busy with my career, etc. to have the production quality that you see on other channels. Plus, not too many bikinis. I do have some epic long-term plans, but most of my vids are going to cover the same short hops around SoCal and northern Baja for the next couple of years.
Great video. Are there mooring balls at Island White also or is it just an anchoring area?
Yes. There's 8 or so moorings available and operated by Belmont Moorings Company. $1/ft per day.
Always enjoy your videos. I’m at Shoreline and plan on an overnight at White in the near future. Probably pay the $30 or so for an overnight on a mooring ball.
That's a pretty quick hop from Shoreline, but a nice little change in scenery from the docks. Mooring pickup will get you a little further out of the boat traffic.
Is it OK to anchor a small boat there in the long beach harbor? I plan to fish around that area at night on a 15ft skiff and anchor my boat for fishing for a few hours here and there. I am just worried that I get a big ticket for doing that.
As far as I know, you do not need a permit to anchor behind island white. Not sure how long you can anchor in other areas in long beach. I'd ask harbor patrol.
@@keeldragger thank you!
Great to see you out there. I just moved to Shoreline last week. Nice marina.
Awesome. Did you have to wait for a slip?
Welcome to shoreline! I’m on AA dock… swing by and say hello!
