  • Andy from ‪@sailingsole‬ and friends Mike & Rick join as crew as we embark on an epic sailing weekend which covers anchorages at three of the Channel Islands.
In this episode, we sail from San Pedro, CA to Santa Barbara Island. We have an amazing fin whale sighting as we make our late afternoon / evening passage. We arrive at the island and drop anchor in the dark around 1030pm, with plans for a brief rest layover before departing in the middle of the night for Santa Cruz Island. The trip to Santa Cruz Island will be covered in our next episode.

Great shots of the whales. Watching this makes me want to get right back out on the water!

Looked like a fantastic sail on the first leg! Looking forward to "the rest of the story"!

It was a fairly smooth passage but we wound up having to motor sail the majority of the way--winds were light and on the nose.

Great sail. Enjoyed watching it. You should have moved the main sail cover out of the way!

I occasionally unroll the stack pack but usually I leave it in place. I definitely would for longer passages.

It was Rick's first time sailing on the ocean. He may have set the record for unlocked achievements in his first voyage.

Great whale spouts. Glad to see the sightings pickup after the big mortality event in 2019, which was particularly hard on grays. Great content, as always!

It might be a timing thing but I have not seen nearly as many grey whales these last two years as I have in the past. During the last two years I have seen far more humpbacks and especially fins. It's all anecdotal based on my own observations, but I'm interested in what is actually going on with migration & mortality events.

Here’s what NOAA is saying about the grays

bummer. numbers are down quite a bit. when we went to see the grays in san ignacio we heard the whales watching season was getting shorter and shorter. probably related.
