Sailing and Anchoring in Newport Beach (March 2020)

- In this episode, Eddie crews and we sail Keeldragger to Newport Beach. Winds are light, but we manage to motor sail. One grey whale sighting along the way. We anchored at the cruiser anchorage off Lido Island. The anchorage was a big busy--a large raft of patriotic motor boats and a sailboat race a few feet away. We discovrered the tank on the dinghy outboard holds a little less gas than we needed. Next time we'll figure out the washdown pump for the anchor.. ..

Nice to see you actually sail the boat instead of motoring/motor sailing.
I find it much easier shut down the engine when I'm day sailing and don't have a destination I'm trying to reach. I'm pretty happy coming off of this last weekend... sailed to and from Catalina on a single tack :-)
Nice little trip, and same day upload - great!
Thanks. I appreciate the comment.
Pretty exciting pulling the knot meter while underway! I don’t mind the task, but it’s always a little nerve wracking, even in the slip or at anchor.
That raftup prob should have had a stern anchor or two to prevent potentially spinning and wrapping anchor rodes.
I was expecting more water to spray in when I pulled the knot meter. It was almost kind of a let down. I've used a stern anchor in the past when that anchorage was more crowded. I didn't swing, but my neighbors did...
Great video! We are itching to sail again as we sit on the hard doing projects...
I've been following along. You guys are doing a great job and, yes, it looks like a lot of hard work on the hard! Hoping to meet you guys up at Santa Cruz one of these days.
keeldragger definitely!!
My dear friend, she is a jaw dropping, head turning beauty! 👏👏👏 So happy for you! Same name?
Thanks, Fabio. Same name! Hope you and your family are doing well.
@@keeldragger We are, thanks! Recovering from Covid... but alive 😊. Hope you guys are well, safe and healthy 🙏. The ocean is perfect to avoid the pandemics 😁.
Family is all covid-free that we know of (or have been asymptomatic). Hope recovery on your side goes well. I had some pretty cool sailing plans before the pandemic. Looking forward to getting back on the water.
Love the Dana 24, I'm looking for one.
Fantastic design. I really miss the Dana 24, but I looooove the Valiant 40. Good luck in your search!
Awe, what made you change her?
@@paduag1782 Dana 24 was almost perfect. I have some extended cruising plans longer-term, and the wife and I wanted a larger boat with more room, storage, etc.
Subscribed! Thanks for taking us along. Would have liked to have seen the knot meter clearing. What did you do exactly and how much water did you take on? Keep up the great vids. Fairwinds!
I would have needed a head mount for the gopro since I had to use both hands. Pretty simple. Just unscrew the sender and put the plug in as fast as you can. Maybe a cup of water came in. Clean the paddle wheel and make sure spins freely, then unscrew the plug and put the send in.
we agree!
@@keeldragger ah, that makes sense
