    For us Volvo was a nightmare when we had trouble with ours. We repowered with a Beta Marine 60 and have never looked back. Best $25k spent ever. By the way, congrats on your early retirement. We retired and spend our summers on the sailboat and winter in Arizona. Plans are to move the boat to Puerto Penasco and put her on the hard so that we can splash her for summer sailing in the Sea. Okay, just listened to the part where you decided on Beta. I can put you in touch with Chris Rinaldi who is a Beta Marine mechanic that handled our repower. He did a great job for us.

      I've been working with Chris Rinaldi. Still unclear if/when I can get my hands on a Beta engine and v-drive. They are backed up for months. Sounds like you have a good plan with Arizona and Puerto Penasco. Easy enough to shuttle in parts from the U.S. if you need them while you have her hauled.

    Order that engine, monitor that trans oil, use that beautiful boat and before you know it time will be here to install it and then take off for mex. Have fun!!

    • @keeldragger
      @keeldragger  Před 2 lety

      That's exactly my plan, but by the time I get my install it will be well past prime cruising season in Mex... maybe Hawaii at that point or up the coast.

    Wow, congratulations on the retirement! Looks like a new yanmar is the future as parts are available even at joes taco stand Bogota, Columbia!

      @keeldragger  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks, Randy. I'm looking at both Beta marine (Kubota block) and Yanmar. Yanmar is everywhere and I had a good experience with my last one. I'm not as big of a fan of the new common rail design and electronics--a failure mode I couldn't address easily in remote areas.

    if you go new motor will you switch to a direct drive and forget the v-drive ?

    • @keeldragger
      @keeldragger  Před 2 lety

      No. Wish I could. The engine placement would have to change dramatically or the entire shaft angle, etc. would have to be altered substantially to replace the v-drive with direct.

    I really like the Beta Marine I had one in my last boat. I have an 1999 Catalina 380 It weighs 20,000.00 Lbs it has a Westerbeke 42 I'm thinking of repowering as well with the 55 Hp Beta
    I'm thinking 30 K installed does that sound about right?

    • @keeldragger

    I've watched several sailing videos and it seems you all spend more time making repairs and other miscellaneous hassles rather than just enjoying sailing. Think I will bow out. No pun intended

    • @keeldragger
      @keeldragger  Před 2 lety

      Hi Mike, that's a fair assessment. A lot of people have the misperception that sailboats run on unicorn farts and pixie dust :-). The reality is boat ownership is hard work--unless you can afford to have others take care of all of the maintenance for you. Best to charter in that case but unfortunately not all charter boats are well maintained. There's a better option... sail on other people's boats!

      No problem getting to Mexico and sailing down Baja. Maybe a problem motoring 1000 nm back to California (as is usually the case, unless you sail towards Hawaii and back--I've considered that option!).
