  • As is only right and to be expected, cruising to distant and remote destinations has been out of the question during the Covid 19 pandemic.
    Nonetheless, we were able to bring Venture south from Canada to California.
    This video describes a short excursion to the offshore island of Santa Catalina.

    Why did you run a line astern and tighten with the capstan ?

    • @sandiegowildcat
      @sandiegowildcat Před 3 lety +2

      This is called the sand line. It is a weighted line that runs between the forward mooring block and the other that is aft. These moorings they are pretty tight and set up to have the boats parallel. So they don't swing like you might expect with just a single mooring ball. You could pull the sand line by hand and attach it to your stern but it is a nasty line that sits on the bottom most of the time. So having the luxury of the capstan it is physically easier and you don't get so dirty. If you google photos of the Avalon harbor you will get a better perspective when the mooring field is full as it would usually be except for during the peak of Covid.

      How would you feel living in a remote area with limited resources and medical facilities
      when strangers show up in their boat from the
      outside world rife with an uncontrolled pandemic? History is full of accounts of remote communities being decimated by disease brought in by boat.

      @@FlemingYachts Yes, I think bubonic plague was brought in by boats, wasn't it?

      If I may, add a perspective. As the Harbor Patrolman in Howland’s Landing and Emerald Bay, on Catalina, for the past two summers, we saw a marked increase in the number of boats coming over this summer. People were escaping the mainland in record numbers. I saw many new boaters, who just bought their “escape capsule” and headed to Catalina. The summer boating season ends in early October. As the weather cools, the northeasterly winds become more frequent, making the mainland side of the island more uncomfortable, even dangerous in high NE winds. Thus, all the boats in Cat Harbor, the only all-weather harbor on the island. That being said, Thank you Sir for a very fine video tour of Santa Catalina Island. If you return, I would invite you to visit Emerald Bay. The water there is truly emerald and crystal clear...some of the clearest on the Island.
