- This is a sunset sail out in the Long Beach Breakwater. I test out my new Lazy Jacks and Stack Pack on my 1978 Catalina 30 then I bang into the dock when I try to solo dock. It’s a mellow watch, nothing too dramatic so lmk what y’all think! Oh ya…like and subscribe! THANKS!

Loving your channel. The narrative in explaining what you’re doing is refreshing. More sailing, the music is very enjoyable. May the winds be with you.
Thank you David. I want this channel to have a lot of sailing but I have a lot of footage of my semi-refit and it’s fun to share that as well. Once I catch up to current date it’s more sailing than boat work but both until then. Thankfully the next episode has time out on the water. Cheers!
Love the video as a green sailor I can relate very well, thanks. Music is spot on :}
Thank you Patrick. 🤘🏼
Bravo!
Thanks buddy! Cheers!
Thank you...Mick Australia 🦘🦘🦘
Right on Mick! Cheers!!! 🤙🏼
If you read the owners manual, you should put the engine in neutral and increase the RPM's for about 30 seconds, then bring back to idle and immediately shut it off. Helps blow out carbon, which diesels create a lot of at low RPM's.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely do it.
Congrats on getting a great deal on the boat! I'm looking forward to watching your adventures. Good luck and stay safe.
Thanks Mike, much appreciated!
Nice single hand sail, what a perfect day!
Thanks it was a good little day sail. Cheers!
Nice afternoon sail - thanks for taking us along for the ride and I like your channel - perhaps for docking you could lay out some form of protector for the boat especially on the ends? Also, to dock it might be a good idea to take a forward cleated springer and cleat it to the dock off the stern first... but hey, nice sail and I like your boat... especially the price you paid - really good buy!!
Hi there. I have a fender, centered, going from cleat to cleat across my slip. Is that what you mean by “cleated springer”?
That day was just a little breeze on my port beam pushing me to starboard. I think it is also the added windage of the stack pack (lazy bag). It’s taller than I’d like and catches too much wind even when it’s down.
Thanks for watching! 👍🏼
@@sailingsole Hi there: No, I was talking about placing springers at either end of the coach roof for example and then the forward one is made fast to the dock at the stern of the boat, and the stern towards the bow of boat. that way you have a quick way of controlling and securing the boat quickly and relatively easily when you're short handed, or at any other time during docking, which can be tricky, especially if you have an unfavorable wind/current. Once the springers are in place, you can get your bow and stern lines in place with less pressure.
Yeah, just because you're bare poled doesn't mean no windage - it is a problem that needs to be borne in mind and compensated for. Happy sailing 🙂
I just came across your channel today, (E2), I like what I've seen--subscribed--will now watch second episode. As a land locked arm chair sailor from west central Alberta, I enjoy watching all aspects of a persons sailing experience, building, renovating, problem solving and just sailing. Take care, be safe and enjoy YOUR life on the water.
Thank you for watching and your kind comment John. A new episode comes out today.
I dig this SO much Garza. Stoked! 🤙
Thanks man!
I like that pocket for the reefing lines!
I love that pocket. I wish it was even bigger! Lol. Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
Lovely video! You might get a bit more performance (especially upwind) if you tighten up the luff of the main. If you take a look at it, you'll see creases coming from each slide on the luff of the main; that should be flat, without those creases. You can either use the winch for that last bit when you're hoisting the main, or use the downhaul to tension it from below (or both!).
Happy sailing!
Thanks D!
She's ready for Catalina island 🏝️ Fine job! Looks great 👍
Thanks Murph!
Good sail! Hellespont Douglas is UK registered. Glad you didn't sink 'em. I have a similar stack pack--UK Sails version they call the Lazy Cradle. Great upgrade for single-handed sailing.
Haha if anyone was gonna get sunk it would’ve been me 😂
Just came across your channel….Your doing what iam nervous AF to do…Been following all these other channels about sailing …. I’ll be following your channel. Good luck with your new boat…….No Hot co-captain ???…..Tommy.st.Petersburg FL.
If it calls you, just do it! I’m so glad I did. My hot co-captain is my wife Misty 😂, she’ll be in some of the next videos. Thanks for watching!
Like the video, would like to see more about the upgrades you have done. I just got the call this week for a slip in shoreline now i'm looking for a Catalina 34 that's not too much of a project boat.
Thank you. Ooo I love those C34’s, great layouts for that size of a boat. I have a ton of footage that I’ll be showing all the upgrades and a boat tour eventually.
Very good, some people talk way to much when all you need is like Steve McQueen, very little words and more action. Sailing speaks for it self with just a little instruction from you, that’s the way I think to enjoy kinda what you’re experiencing in that moment like how you put the camera on the side. We don’t get enough of that experience. I guess it’s time to get a sailboat and go for it! Thanks man ⛵️great job!
Thank you very much. My second video is a bit chatty but there was a lot to explain. I intend to make this channel about sailing and sharing the experience. Cheers!
Nice video!! My 1st boat was a 1978 Catalina 30 called Fat Cat.. Loved it! She had a tiller though
😎🥢⛵️🏴☠️🤙
Haha rad. I kind of wish mine had a tiller, the cockpit would be so much bigger without the steering pedestal but the wheel is nice too. What do you have now?
Fantastic Video
Thank you!
Your "Genoa" looks like a Working Jib. Looks like you're figuring it out.
I’m not sure if it’s a 120% or 135% but it goes quite a bit past the mast so I wouldn’t call it a working jib.
Why do you think it looks like a working jib?
Love this, Andy!
Awesome! Thanks Vicki!!!
Hey, you brought her in pretty damn good for a nubee
Thanks. I’ve been sailing for about 2 years or so by then. I made that video before i started from the beginning (confusing, i know) I’m no pro at docking but I just take it slow.
I think you had the head sail trimmed nicely
🤙🏼 thanks
Did you do a class or take sailing lessons or what? You seem to be doing great!
I first learned on CZcams then my wife and I both took ASA sailing lessons. But I had already solo sailed a bunch of times by then. I just went for it and tried to be smart and safe but didn’t let my fear get in the way. Thanks for watching!
is it me or did you just learn to sail in 3 videos?good on ya mate
Thanks man but yes and no. The videos are out of order. The first video is two years after the two $3500 videos. I’ve been filming the whole time, then I decided to make the lazy jacks video which inspired me to start editing the older footage from the beginning. So now it’s in order from the beginning until I catch up to current times. Thanks for watching!
Andy, Just subscribed. A question about the "stack pack". Does it hold water? Seems like it would. Or does it have weep holes. thanks, jeff
That’s a great question, it doesn’t hold water, but it does funnel the water into my boom. Then my boom fills up with water and has forced me to drill a weep hole for it to drain from so there was a complication but overall it’s great I’m getting reef holes sewn in for my reef lines, and I think that will help with the water problem.
@@sailingsole Andy, Thanks for the reply.jeff
Another great Vid. Who made the pack for you? In the process on pulling the trigger on a Cat 30 right now and will be brand new to sailing. Thx from LB, Ca
Right on! Thanks! My buddy Wayne made it. He’s does great work. HMU on IG if you want to connect with him. Cheers!
You've inspired me to shop for a sailboat. I live in Los Angeles. Do you recommend the best places/resources to shop for deals? Thank you!
Hi Sam, if you’re looking for the best deals the standard places are where to look; OfferUp, Craigslist and FB marketplace. There are a lot of brokers that have boats that are not on YachtWorld so lookup local boat brokers and scour their inventory. The most important thing to do is find a place to put it. So call the local marinas and see if they have availability for the size range you’re looking to buy and if they don’t have any slips available then get on their waiting list. It should be free. Good luck and please lmk if you ever get one! I’d be hyped! Cheers! - Andy 🤙🏼
@@sailingsole Andy, oh man, it's so nice to have tips from someone like you who is ahead it this process. Thank you!!! I shopped around like you suggested and found boats in my range in Marina Del Rey and Long Beach. Now what is the difference (pros/cons) of the two locations, or do you know? Seems the primary difference is that LBC has a huge marina with plenty of space for sheltered sailing. LBC slip fees are cheaper too.
Do you have a slip in Dana Point Harbor.?I understand they are really jacking up the slip fees.
No I bought the boat in Dana Point then immediately moved it to Long Beach.
@Sailing Solé SMART-My buddies boat in DP harbor recently saw a 30% increase in slip fees.He has had it there for 30 years.
@@tr7b410 yikes that’s a big hike.
is that a drum stool??
Haha yep! Works perfect for me. It’s broke so it won’t last much longer but it’s good for now.
US oil leaving out of the US😂
Ya, a silly thought but it was in the news that day. Cheers!
