Edmundo's beef with Romário included a drunk chimpanzee, stolen penalty kicks, and toilet cartoons

  • Legendary Brazilian footballer Romário and his good-though-less-legendary compatriot Edmundo were similar in many ways: their position, their personalities, and their intense love of partying, often to the detriment of their careers. But what they had in common would also be what caused beef between them.
(Well, that and a bathroom door cartoon.)

There is a rumour here in Brazil that while both were playing at Flamengo, Romário asked what time it was and Edmundo said "time for you to buy a watch". Ever since, Romário stopped talking with Edmundo

As a brazilian, i loooove this.
Fun fact: Romario wasn't on the 2002 World Cup too because on a match a few months before the tournament he said that he couldn't play because of an injury on his hip. The truth soon came out and he actually was out partying the day before with a flight attendent.
Ps: he was the team captain.

as a brazilian die hard soccer fan I was thrilled to see that yall made this video. You're only wrong by saying brazilian home talent had a drought in the 80s, they had a World Cup win drought but the 1980s generation of players was one of the best ever, players like Zico, Reinaldo, Sócrates, Cerezzo, Falcão. Even though they didnt win, the 1982 brazilian World Cup squad if often seen as arguably their best ever

Brazil had amazing players in 80's but most of them grew up in 70's. It's no secret that Brazil had the worst team in 1990 world cup as the older players like Zico and Socrates retired from the national team after 1986 world cup. There was not really decade long drought, but there was little drought during 80's.

I was going to make this exact point. Nevertheless, there is a fact that adds up to Edmundo insubordination in Fiorentina. He was the bench player that often was replacing Batistuta, one of the best strikers of the world at the time. In that period, Batistuta had an injury, and wouldn't be able to play; the immediate backup was Edmundo. When the team call him to summon him for the match, they found out that he was in Rio for the Carnival.

In 1994 Romário wanted to be realeased a day earlier so he could enjoy the carnival in Brazil.
The problem is that Barcelona had a game that day.
So Romário convinced the coach (Cryuff) to release he earlier if he scored 2 goals.
He made 3 in the first half, and when the other players got to the locker he was getting dressed, had his bagadge and explained that he had bought tickets for a flight and needed to go..

What is so compelling about 22 guys passing a ball around for what feels like an eternity. Hockey is like if soccer was fast paced and entertaining.

Just one thing: at around 5:50, the "king" mentioned in Edmundo's rant was not his coach, but club's PRESIDENT Eurico Miranda (ew-REEK-oh mee-RUND-ah), who still has an owner-like status at Vasco da Gama until today.

The biggest mistake was not to mention Eurico Miranda's role during their time playing at Vasco. There was also another game, during early 00's, that Romário fought with Vasco's organized crowd and Edmundo was playing for Cruzeiro. Vasco and Cruzeiro played a match that Romário scored a hat trick in that game but got booed by Vasco's supporters. Edmundo, on the other hand, played only the second half, missed a penalty and got a standing ovation by Vasco's fan base (later that night, Edmundo got fired due to that).

This beef has a terrible chapter too, one that doesn't directly involve either player, but is bizarre all the same.
By the late 90s, Vasco supporters were basically divided between Edmundo fans and Romário fans. Edmundo had huge support after leading the team to the 1997 Brazilian Championship, scoring a then-record 28 goals in the tournament.
After Romário's return, those fans were mad at him pushing Edmundo away from the club. In 2000, however, Romário led the team to a historic year, winning the Copa Mercosul (including coming back from 3-0 in the final) and making it to the final of the Brazilian Championship that year (named Copa João Havelange due to politics, it's a really long story) against extreme underdogs São Caetano.
The second leg was played in an overpacked São Januário, instead of the Maracanã (again, long story). After Romário left injured, one fan cried that Edmundo would have kept playing despite injury. This sparked a small scuffle that the bleacher's fence couldn't withstand. The fans started falling into the field and 150 people ended up injured. The field became an emergency ICU.
The Romario/Edmundo feud still exists among Vasco fans, but they're definitely calmer now.

Eurico is the living example of old fashioned brazilian admnistration of an institution: an autoritharian figure with questionable ethics that rules over by bringing up a time were he had some sucess... and somehow some people love him.

As a brazilian, there two things that come to my mind when thinking about Romario:
In his return for Brazil, he was asked about missing trainings by a journalist, and the answer was "Why do I have to pratice if I know what to do in the game?"
And the second was when he played for Cryuff's Barcelona and asked for some days off to enjoy the carnaval in Rio, and Cryuff said he could get if scored twice. He made it in 20 minutes and asked for a substitution because he's flight would departure in an hour.

Great video, just one correction though: Edmundo didn't lash out on the coach, but on Eurico Miranda, Vasco's president at the time and basically a mafioso with the club as his enterprise. He is "the king" ("o homem lá") that Edmundo refers to at the interview when he's angry.

  • @luisefn

The Beef was real. A little to much backstory, and Edmundo was pictured as a smaller player than he actually was (the guy won the 97 Brazilian championship for Vasco and the American Cup for Brazil by himself, he scored 29 goals in 27 matches, 6 in one game, all of those are records).

But there are some mistakes about both players
When Edmundo spoke about “the boss”, he wasn’t saying about Vasco’s coach, but the president, who has a lot of political problems

I understand why paint the image of Romario like a Trouble Maker, but in reality he was one of the best soccer players in history, he wasn't just "a part of the 1994 squad that won the World Cup" He, by himself, won the 1994 World Cup for Brazil, he made more than 1000 goals in his carreer, He is a LEGEND here in Brazil!

They left out a bunch of individual "accolades" in the video for brevity, they left only the truly special ones (the monkey one always cracks me up).
The "older, more mature" Romário went into the stands during training to fight a heckler, who had threw chickens at the pitch.
Even for me, who actually grew during it all, it's all too surreal.

  • @Damasiofa

The "King" that Edmundo and Romário were refering to wasn't the coach but the Vasco's president, Eurico Miranda. He is kind a folklorical instituition in the Brazilian Football.

4:16 "With Edmundo starring, Vasco qualified for a spot in the inaugural Club World Cup, to be hosted in Brazil in January of 2000"
    That's not accurate.
Vasco went to that competition because it won the 1998 Libertadores Cup, when Edmundo was still at Fiorentina.
That Club World Cup was an aberration that FIFA came up with during the 1999 season. The participants were still getting chosen by June of 1999. By then, Manchester United had just won the 1999 Champions League, but the Libertadores Cup was about to end in two weeks. Eurico Miranda, Vasco's iconic president ("the king" mentioned by Edmundo in the video) saw these two weeks as an opportunity to kick the 1999 Libertadores champion aside and put Vasco instead. He insisted that all the participants needed to be known ASAP, and convinced everybody that South America should send its 1998 champion, not 1999. Corinthians, the invited host club, was put in the competition because it won the 1998 Brazilian Championship. Real Madrid was another club that made it into that competition due to a 1998 feat (Intercontinental Cup champion). FIFA accepted the maneuver by Eurico and favored Vasco da Gama instead of waiting just a couple of weeks to see who would win the 1999 Libertadores Cup : Palmeiras (BRA) or Deportivo Cali (COL) . That maneuver later on proved to be absolute bogus, because Africa chose its participant only in late 1999. Palmeiras ended up winning the Libertadores Cup on June 16, 1999 and got a promise from FIFA that it would get a spot in the 2001 Club World Cup. Sadly for Palmeiras, the 2001 edition never existed because the tournament was just an experimental mess and got canceled due to major sponsors going bankrupt.
As you mentioned yourself ... "This is FIFA we're talking about, rules are just kind of suggestions"
