Rick Pitino, awful Celtics coach, was outdone by Rick Pitino, awful Celtics president | The Worst

  • Before the 1997-98 NBA season, eight NBA teams made a change at head coach. One of those teams was the Boston Celtics, who hired Rick Pitino away from the University of Kentucky to be coach and president. The decision to put that much power in the hands of someone who was fickle with his roster, collegiate in his approach, and interested in being the center of the show, proved to be a total disaster.

      The Celtics honestly are the most overrated franchise ever. Most of their rings were in the era with only a few teams, where you had an all star team on Boston playing against a bunch of unathletic white dudes, to be blunt. In the modern Era, Boston has 4 rings. 4. 4 rings. The lakers in the modern era have 10. Nuff said. Even if you count the 70's Boston only has 6 and LA has 11. If they hadnt got Pitino, they could have won quite a few more with Pierce on their team.

      Better than me in Madden 08 trying to improve my running game, but passing on free agent Shawn Alexander in favor of the third best rookie running back, who proceeds to suck, quickly get benched for the old guy, and only score a single (admittedly really cool 70-yard) TD on the ground all year before randomly running an onside kick back for a TD in garbage time of a blowout Super Bowl win.

Gruden is doing a great job acquiring draft picks and he honestly can create a dynasty in Oakland if he trades away Carr and nails just half of his picks (one being on a QB of course). What he's doing is no different than what Sam Hinkie did with the 76ers, which people criticized heavily at the time but as soon as Hinkie was fired everyone was prasing him and calling him a genius. While Gruden, like Hinkie, probably won't be around when the Raiders become good, he will be getting praise for how great of a job he did.

      The big difference for the Celtics was that Pitino was pure awful and a total spaz of a decision maker. It probably never works out that the Celtics land Pierce if they drafted McGrady, but imagine that the Celtics would've had an outside shot of starting Billups, McGrady and Pierce. Antoine Walker probably would've found more success as a secondary option as well, versus the version Boston got (an inefficient volume scorer). Danny Ainge came in and fixed things, but Pitino definitely managed to cement a lost decade for the team despite having an all time great around in Paul Pierce.

The President/Coach has never worked in NBA history (look at Doc Rivers in LA, or Thibs with MN), especially for a coach going from the NCAA to the NBA. If they learned anything from the Red Auerbach era, they should've hired a Celtics legend (in this case Bird). Auerbach always brought back former players to coach or run the organization. Most of them did great and were fiercely loyal to the organization (KC Jones was a player in the 60s then coached the Bird era teams & Ainge is arguably the best GM in the league).

    There was an article a few years back about the Celtics old practice facility at Brandeis University. It described a great relationship between team and people at the university. Students could shoot around w/ players, they would watch practices, and it was a good thing for all. Until Rick Pitino showed. He apparently closed off the practices, yelled and screamed at players so all could hear. This happened so much and so loudly that it troubled the university staff!

    How about "The Worst" rule changes?
    99-00 season (first major steps toward handchecking removal)
    Handchecking had been slowed down to a small degree in the late 90s, but not anywhere close to the massive change that was introduced starting in 99/00.
    "In the backcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders. In the frontcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders except below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may only use his forearm."
    So by this point, handchecking is for all intents and purposed removed - "There is no contact with hands" and "the defender may only use his forearm" below the FT line extended.
    00-01 season - new rules that further decreased amount of contact allowed by a defender
    "No contact with either hands or forearms by defenders except in the frontcourt below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may use his forearm only."
    "Neither the offensive player nor the defender will be allowed to dislodge or displace a player who has legally obtained a position."
    "Defender may not use his forearm, shoulder, hip or hand to reroute or hold-up an offensive player going from point A to Point B or one who is attempting to come around a legal screen set by another offensive player."
    "Slowing or impeding the progress of the screener by grabbing, clutching, holding “chucking” or “wrapping up” is prohibited."
    "On the weakside, defenders must remain on the weakside outside the paint unless (i) they are double-teaming the ball, (ii) picking up a free cutter or (iii) closely guarding an offensive player."
    01-02 season - Addition of illegal defensive 3 seconds rules to weaken defenses even more.
    "A new defensive three-second rule will prohibit a defensive player from remaining in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds without closely guarding an offensive player."
    This rule makes it much easier to drive in the lane, because bigs can no longer camp out in the lane and deter drives to the basket like they did in the 80s and 90s.
    04-05 season
    "New rules were introduced to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game."

    Hey, Tony Battie was the guy who made sure Paul Pierce got prompt medical attention the night he got stabbed 11 times. Now maybe if Battie isn't there, maybe they go to a club down the street and nothing happens, but as it stands he was instrumental to the Celtics' 17th championship!

      At least Pitino wasnt petty and didnt take shots at his players. Yes his tenure as a Celtics Coach and GM was a huge failure, but Mourinho just flat out petty and immature.

    I dispute this one a little bit. First, the Celtics were bad when Patino arrived. Second, look at the players Patino drafted. Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce are hall-of-famers, and Antoine Walker is a borderline one. The only things you could make the case for is that maybe the NBA game had passed the gut by and that you never have someone be both coach and president, but I cannot say he's the worst of all time.

    • @kvltizt
      @kvltizt Před 5 lety +3

      Antoine Walker is not borderline HoF. He's a fat bum who had a few good tears and mostly bad years.

    • @jacobrklein7175
      @jacobrklein7175 Před 5 lety +1

      Wrong. When you look at the stats, Walker was one of two guys producing during the lean years of the Celtics, the other being Paul Pierce. And getting into the HOF in basketball is a lot easier than, say the NFL version in Canton, OH, because the basketball HOF can also include your college career, and Walker had a good college career and won a national title. I will say, though, they should have drafted T-Mac.
