Rick Pitino, awful Celtics coach, was outdone by Rick Pitino, awful Celtics president | The Worst

- Before the 1997-98 NBA season, eight NBA teams made a change at head coach. One of those teams was the Boston Celtics, who hired Rick Pitino away from the University of Kentucky to be coach and president. The decision to put that much power in the hands of someone who was fickle with his roster, collegiate in his approach, and interested in being the center of the show, proved to be a total disaster.

The Celtics honestly are the most overrated franchise ever. Most of their rings were in the era with only a few teams, where you had an all star team on Boston playing against a bunch of unathletic white dudes, to be blunt. In the modern Era, Boston has 4 rings. 4. 4 rings. The lakers in the modern era have 10. Nuff said. Even if you count the 70's Boston only has 6 and LA has 11. If they hadnt got Pitino, they could have won quite a few more with Pierce on their team.

@@MoneyHoneyBunny Wait...So they are overrated for drafting well? It's their fault they had an "All-Star" team? I like this arbitrary "modern era" you're inventing. Do the Lakers still count their Minnesota titles?
Rick pitino is basically the real life equivalent of any of us playing sports games in gm mode
"Hire 4 free agents, trade for a draft pick, hire 3 more, trade for a player, now trade the player and draft pick together for a better player..."
Except he never takes the time to look properly at the stat sheets. He just goes "aah, 81 overall, 91 accuracy. Sign him up"
Better than me in Madden 08 trying to improve my running game, but passing on free agent Shawn Alexander in favor of the third best rookie running back, who proceeds to suck, quickly get benched for the old guy, and only score a single (admittedly really cool 70-yard) TD on the ground all year before randomly running an onside kick back for a TD in garbage time of a blowout Super Bowl win.
So basically like the Percy Harvin situation on the Seahawks, but way dumber.
@@SortaNonymous And with less weed.
@@hiimemily Yeah, with less weed probably (unless the 17-year-old GameCube CPU is hiding something from me)
Also now that running back randomly got a massive stat boost in year 2 despite doing nothing and has become a good running back now, so I guess it wasn't that bad (that and I lowered the difficulty back down after like 5 All-Pro-difficulty games of the defense having to carry everything that season)

Henry Steiner and he was previously a very successful head coach at the pros(winning a SB with Tampa) before taking another job(booth analyst). Oh my gosh. The Raiders are about to become the early aughts Celtics.
@@zachbeckham6520 Worse...at least the Celtics were in Boston where even some semblance of some good moves (like Pierce) would inspire hope, and their franchise had a storied history and there were people alive who remembered the winning days. The Raiders are moving to Vegas, and in such a rancorous fashion as to spit on the Oakland fans who they are leaving behind. The Raiders feel more like the Browns/Ravens to me right now, except that they'll not be winning anything in the near future.
Don't compare this to Gruden. Gruden is doing a great job acquiring draft picks and he honestly can create a dynasty in Oakland if he trades away Carr and nails just half of his picks (one being on a QB of course). What he's doing is no different than what Sam Hinkie did with the 76ers, which people criticized heavily at the time but as soon as Hinkie was fired everyone was prasing him and calling him a genius. While Gruden, like Hinkie, probably won't be around when the Raiders become good, he will be getting praise for how great of a job he did.
Also, no I'm not a Raiders fan, I'm a Patriots fan, but Gruden is doing a great job and it's ridiculous that he gets so much hate.
Kyrie Irving An expensive 10 year contract is still not a good idea.
@@danielyankun3605 he gets so much hate because of all the bullshit he is spouting. He never admitted he is there to rebuild. Also, in order for Gruden to be successful, he needs to nail his draft picks and develop young players - something he is unproven at. I bet this will end in tears

You laugh at Gruden now, give him 2-3 years and I guarantee that he will have the Raiders as one of the top three teams in the AFC. The mans a hell of a lot smarter than people like you take him for and btw, not a Raiders fan in the slightest.
@@SuperSuperbowl1 I was mostly referring to the length and size of the contract. 10 yrs is too long for just about anyone. I actually do think Gruden can probably turn things around. After watching QB camp, I know he has more football knowledge in his pinkie than I have in my whole body ;)
grem grem Fair enough man Il give ya that on the contract. Didn’t mean to sound full on triggered lol, I have always thought Gruden is smarter than he gets credit for is all.
Ya Gruden is getting bashed a ton for his big contract and the raiders 2018 results, but he knew this team wasn't talented enough to beat the chiefs or even the chargers. The blow up clearly has the blessing of ownership. I'd give it 2020 before we really declare him a fail.
The big difference for the Celtics was that Pitino was pure awful and a total spaz of a decision maker. It probably never works out that the Celtics land Pierce if they drafted McGrady, but imagine that the Celtics would've had an outside shot of starting Billups, McGrady and Pierce. Antoine Walker probably would've found more success as a secondary option as well, versus the version Boston got (an inefficient volume scorer). Danny Ainge came in and fixed things, but Pitino definitely managed to cement a lost decade for the team despite having an all time great around in Paul Pierce.
Ok, I love the "Bawstawn Massuhusutts".
I don't think college success in any role will necessarily translate to NBA success in the same role, and Pitino's complete failure to adapt to his circumstances and to make hasty, stubborn decisions only exacerbated that. Rash decisions with motives that don't fit your situation is a problem throughout all of history, really, especially the removal of Jungleland Express, formerly at Six Flags Great Adventure.
I think the Celts hired him because he had proven NBA experience with the Knicks as the video mentioned. The President/Coach has never worked in NBA history (look at Doc Rivers in LA, or Thibs with MN), especially for a coach going from the NCAA to the NBA. If they learned anything from the Red Auerbach era, they should've hired a Celtics legend (in this case Bird). Auerbach always brought back former players to coach or run the organization. Most of them did great and were fiercely loyal to the organization (KC Jones was a player in the 60s then coached the Bird era teams & Ainge is arguably the best GM in the league).
I dont understand why the difference between college and professional league thats so big. Besides the paychecks, they seem to still be the same game.
@@DatBoi-mo9vc college is slower they actually run offenses and play defenses. I love the NBA but it gets boring watching them run up and down the court throwing up shots as quick as possible

If they still sucked enough to end up with the 10th pick in 98 & draft Pierce, that would be an amazing team that would've been a contender (maybe not win rings but definitely make deep playoffs runs every year). That starting 5 would be: Chauncey, TMac, Fox, Pierce, and O'Neal!
I can't be mad cuz even though the Cs did Chauncey dirty, he convinced KG to leave Minny & sign with them in 2007!
Rick Pitino did the impossible: he made me turn my back on the team that I had followed passionately for 35 years.

Students could shoot around w/ players, they would watch practices, and it was a good thing for all. Until Rick Pitino showed. He apparently closed off the practices, yelled and screamed at players so all could hear. This happened so much and so loudly that it troubled the university staff!

Early 2000s Mariners was a team full of electric talents, yet under Bavasi's tenure it turned into a perrenial underacheiver which it still is to this day. Scouting, trades, free agency, player development... Nearly every decision he made as a GM backfired on him and the team.
Matt Millen should be the one for NFL.
How about "The Worst" rule changes?
99-00 season (first major steps toward handchecking removal)
Handchecking had been slowed down to a small degree in the late 90s, but not anywhere close to the massive change that was introduced starting in 99/00.
"In the backcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders. In the frontcourt, there is no contact with hands and forearms by defenders except below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may only use his forearm."
So by this point, handchecking is for all intents and purposed removed - "There is no contact with hands" and "the defender may only use his forearm" below the FT line extended.
00-01 season - new rules that further decreased amount of contact allowed by a defender
"No contact with either hands or forearms by defenders except in the frontcourt below the free throw line extended in which case the defender may use his forearm only."
"Neither the offensive player nor the defender will be allowed to dislodge or displace a player who has legally obtained a position."
"Defender may not use his forearm, shoulder, hip or hand to reroute or hold-up an offensive player going from point A to Point B or one who is attempting to come around a legal screen set by another offensive player."
"Slowing or impeding the progress of the screener by grabbing, clutching, holding “chucking” or “wrapping up” is prohibited."
"On the weakside, defenders must remain on the weakside outside the paint unless (i) they are double-teaming the ball, (ii) picking up a free cutter or (iii) closely guarding an offensive player."
01-02 season - Addition of illegal defensive 3 seconds rules to weaken defenses even more.
"A new defensive three-second rule will prohibit a defensive player from remaining in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds without closely guarding an offensive player."
This rule makes it much easier to drive in the lane, because bigs can no longer camp out in the lane and deter drives to the basket like they did in the 80s and 90s.
04-05 season
"New rules were introduced to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game."
Cold Snap I argue that getting rid of hand checking was good for the sport. More space= more points= more exciting play
@@droptoppopshop8476 Kobe Bryant on 80/90s basketball - "The truth is, it makes the game [where] players have to be more skillful. Nowadays, literally anybody can get out there and get to the basket and you can't touch anybody. Back then, if guys put their hands on you, you had to have the skill to be able to go both ways, change direction, post up, you had to have a mid-range game because you didn't want to go all the way to the basket because you would get knocked ass over tea kettle. So I think playing the game back then required MUCH MORE SKILL."

@@razkable Antoine Walker was a fat bum though. He only had a few good years followed by being one of the worst contracts in sports.
Then he still went bankrupt despite getting overpaid 😂😂😂
"Massakhoosits" LMAO
8:23 - I was confused when I saw #8 Walker, because I that's the same number Kemba Walker wears on the Celtics right now.
They tried to kill two birds with one stone. However, they accidentally picked up a boulder instead and didn't realize it until they dropped it and killed themselves.
If y’all ever do a the worst NFL coaching hire it’s easily Bobby Petrino by the falcons
They did that already
They've done one... it was literally the recommended video at the end.
Yeah didn’t know just heard pitino and reminded me of petrino
Sean McVay.
Kaddywompous no

Boston runs a full court press against the Bulls (the best team in the NBA) at the Fleet Center 🏟
They won that game bulls didn't have pip
Great video!
Please do another video on scoreigoma in the NFL
The worst NFL draft pick: Dimitrius Underwood, Minnesota Vikings' 1st rounder in 1999
Thank GOD i was too young to be a fan during these days.
Hey, Tony Battie was the guy who made sure Paul Pierce got prompt medical attention the night he got stabbed 11 times. Now maybe if Battie isn't there, maybe they go to a club down the street and nothing happens, but as it stands he was instrumental to the Celtics' 17th championship!
Rick Pitino "Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish ain't walking through that door folks. It's not happening".
63 videos since Jon Bois was last seen
So what I got was Pitino is the American Jose Mourinho
EXACTLY
Far from it. Mourinho is an amazing manager its pity his fans are so impatient. The Ferguson era was 1 in a million get over it.
@@dickiesdocos Mourinho was an amazing manager, but now way past his use by date
At least Pitino wasnt petty and didnt take shots at his players. Yes his tenure as a Celtics Coach and GM was a huge failure, but Mourinho just flat out petty and immature.
Didn't take shots at his players? How else do you interpret "Larry Bird is not walking through that door?"
Why is the bassist from Nirvana in that Laker team photo?
Do you have a video on O'Brien's departure? There were so many rumors
We don't I'm afraid. Thanks for watching though Percy!
I dispute this one a little bit. First, the Celtics were bad when Patino arrived. Second, look at the players Patino drafted. Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce are hall-of-famers, and Antoine Walker is a borderline one. The only things you could make the case for is that maybe the NBA game had passed the gut by and that you never have someone be both coach and president, but I cannot say he's the worst of all time.
Antoine Walker is not borderline HoF. He's a fat bum who had a few good tears and mostly bad years.
Wrong. When you look at the stats, Walker was one of two guys producing during the lean years of the Celtics, the other being Paul Pierce. And getting into the HOF in basketball is a lot easier than, say the NFL version in Canton, OH, because the basketball HOF can also include your college career, and Walker had a good college career and won a national title. I will say, though, they should have drafted T-Mac.
Chauncey Billups won his ring with Pistons. And Paul Pierce is lucky enough to not becoming the 2nd Billups.
@@jacobrklein7175 You're really attempting to use the drafted HOFers that he traded away for no reason in his *defense?*
You forgot to mention how he had his Celtic players on a curfew. Lol
Hey SB nation, that video you made on the Reds owner was awesome. Where did it go? Did her family claim defamation?
As a lifelong Pistons fan, Chauncey Billups arrival to Detroit since day 1 I was like he's definitely found a permanent home here in the Motor City and made him an all star.
Jim O'Brien has a final laugh.
The absolute best video from a diehard Celtics fan. Great work.
It’s unfortunate this isn’t being done for NASCAR. I’m sure it’ll draw interest since the research is so thorough and it’s narrated so well
Do the worst 2OT NBA regular season game.
Knicks Hawks from Monday night.
6:30 So, Vampire confirmed?
Larry Bird is not walking through the that door
He coulda been if they had hired him instead!
Through that DOAH
So the Celtics could have had McGrady, Billups, Walker and Paul Pierce at the same time and either in their prime/approaching their prime? Damn. That would have been a hell of a superteam.
"Not walking through that door" is still my favorite presser
