- NCAA basketball was forever changed when John Calipari took his first head coaching gig as captain of the UMass Minutemen. It also ignited a feud with UConn coach, Jim Calhoun who saw Calipari as an outsider who didn't belong in New England. The two battled off the court as well as on, much to the satisfaction of college basketball fans everywhere.

Not only is it too soon but it is highly publicize that all it takes is a google search to get hundreds of stories.
Most of these beefs are beefs that we’re forgotten or not nationwide news but was entertaining at the time if someone followed the history and it was before everyone had internet in their homes.

I’ve lived in CT my entire life. Those were exciting times. For me, that’s when college basketball was the most exciting sport of all.
I also grew up in NE , Uconn, UMass,BC,Providence, and URI. Best era ever in NE College Ball.

Also in Calhoun's second year retired, UConn won the national championship as a 7 seed, beating Kentucky in the finals
And UConn hasn’t been good since, while Kentucky has been regular a SEC and national powerhouse.

Come on Calhoun built Connecticut, an afterthought in the Big East, into a national powerhouse and he did so without much controversy. Oh, and he also has 3 national championships with 3 separate teams (and UConn's 4th was won with almost all of his receuits using his system).
Calipari? He continually gets 3 of the top 10 HS players and has 1 National Chamionship out of it. He's also had two of the three team's he left get in trouble after he left.
It's not even a rivalry.
You guys should do an entire segment on Calipari and Chaney.
As someone who lives right near the CT/MA boarder, I can confirm the beef smell in the air. In summer it's quite lovely.

Calhoun waited too long to recruit Camby, and Jackie Bethea (a big name in Hartford basketball at the time) felt UConn overlooked Hartford kids. So Marcus ended up at UMass, following Mike Williams (Weaver HS) to Amherst.
Calipari gave him a fat 💰.... that’s why he went to UMASS. Don’t kid yourself. UMASS got put on probation and forfeited their final 4 season because of it.

The "reporter" referenced at 8:00 wasn't anything close to a reporter. He was a local Green Party activist who sneaked into the press conference intending to make a scene. He later got arrested for trying to rush the governor during her inaugural parade. Pretty sure there were other incidents, too.
If A-Rod and Jeter are the standard for beef, Calipari and Calhoun are store brand Steak-Ums.
They're a Steak-Um you find stuck under the seat in your car one day and go, "When did I buy this? Probably not even good anymore," and then you throw it out your window for the squirrels to eat.
So that's how Calipari learned to shut down a home-and-home series like he did against Indiana because they wouldn't move the games off campus. He learned it from Calhoun doing it to him.
Calhoun was an absolute legend growing up 5 minutes from Uconn, maybe the only two people more beloved than him were Ray Allen and Geno Auriemma, at least that's how it was with my family and circle. CT hasn't had any pro sports teams since the Whalers left in the 90s, so people here are mostly divided between Boston and New York teams, UConn is the one thing that brings us together in sports.
That being said, I grew up one town over from Uconn, and the funny thing is basically no one talks with that "New England" accent Calhoun was going on and on about. Sure there are some people who do, but most of them come from Providence or Boston. CT is weird cause it's both New England and the New York tri-state area, but everywhere that I've lived (Willimantic, New Haven, New London) most people have talked way more New York-y than Boston-y. Of course I'm sure you go up closer to the MA and RI borders to those little towns, you probably get way more New England accents, but still.

You are correct, however, in your assessment of American's potential attitudes to the greatest sport our Lord God ever passed down from King to pauper.
