- Lance Armstrong and Greg Lemond are the only Americans to ever win (or "win") the Tour De France multiple times.
And while these cycling heroes could have enjoyed a passing-the-torch type relationship, they did not. Because like all things Lance Armstrong, performance-enhancing drugs dominated the narrative. And before you know it, you’ve got a big slab of steroid infused, genetically modified Beef.

The fact that LeMond stuck to what was right instead of becoming another puppet covering up for Lance makes him an even greater hero

@@dogguy8603 In cycling. But if you look at athletics both track and field world records rarely get broken. The womens 100, 200, 400 and 800 world records are still from the 80s from Eastern European countries. For example in the 400m women dont even remotely get close to the world record. I'm talking almost 2 seconds slower than the world record and 1.5-2 seconds over a short distance like 400m is HUGE. It will be decades before the womens 400m is broken.
Whatever doping that is done by athletes today is on a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH smaller scale than what Eastern Europeans did in the 80s.
Great Episode! Something that wasn't mentioned in the video: Lemond had been sexually abused during his childhood, but not many knew about it. Floyd Landis threatened to tell the press about it and embarrass Lemond if he decided to testify against him. So during his testimony, Lemond revealed the abuse to beat him to it. Lemond now does advocacy work for abuse victims. Another piece of evidence about why Lemond is a good person and more Americans should know about him!

Back about 10 years ago Lemond participated in a charity cycle and my dad got to meet him and act as a chaperone. The only way to describe him is as a pure gentleman! Like he turned up early, chatted with everyone and was the last person to leave at the end of the day after talking and signing everyone. He even offered my dad some breakfast.

Watching Lemond gracefully hit the EPO wall and choosing not to dope is my favorite part of cycling history.

His accomplishments are mathematically possible. My question to you is where is the evidence and accusations of Lemond blood doping? Someone always comes out with a credible accusation. If Lemond was already cheating, why didn’t he start using EPO?

I don't think people understand what may have happened to Greg. The blood banking system was down because it appeared to be causing AIDS. I designed the instrument that allowed Dr Kary Mullis to use his PCR chemistry and that was used to detect HIV. So Greg could not obtain a transfusion when he needed it. When he started racing again he was a mess. He then claimed that his doctor told him that he was low on iron and supposedly received iron shots and in the Tour he looked like a miracle. At the same time synthetic EPO was developed and it is possible that he gave Greg EPO. Now that would have been the prescription for his condition and I would not consider it cheating. But you have to remember that Greg hammers on Lance for using EPO. And Lance is one of the all time great egotists and worked very hard against Greg and his interests. So I think that Greg is carrying far too great a grudge against Lance and should let it slide because he could have been using the same materials as Lance, knowingly or not.

I'm of the opinion that they really don't do much and they can cause health problems. The answer isn't banning cheaters but having testing procedures that catch them 100% of the time.

One might have to look at when this EPO was first developed and who were the earliest users. I know something was being used in the '70s, just look at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Greg was almost certainly doping just like everyone else when he was champion. When EPO came around he had reached the end of his career and wasn't willing to make the health sacrifice it took to continue winning. Over and over we've seen dopers be the most vocal anti-doping advocates as a means to stay relevant past their peak and I've over it.

Greg LeMond's courage is the stuff of legends. He won the Tour de France by himself with his own team (lead by Bernard 'The Badger' Hinault) attempting to sabotage him. He GOT SHOT AND WAS BASICALLY ON THE BRINK OF DEATH, came back, and won two more TDFs against top competition. Then he antagonized probably the most beloved athlete WORLDWIDE for more than a decade because he was standing his ground on what he knew was right. His character is inspiring, it's ridiculous.
@Christy Dolan Hmmm maybe I'm speaking from my own experience, but, in Colombia (where cycling is huge) he was BELOVED. When Livestrong started every Colombian city kid had a Livestrong band around their wrist, and they dreamed of becoming Lance Armstrong.

I think u mean cycling is under-appreciated as a whole. The small percentage of people that are actually into the sport definitely appreciate and celebrate that dude’s career. He just wasn’t the media juggernaut sensation that was Lance Armstrong - who was the only cyclist that broke into the mainstream.

I don’t know where you are from but I’m from Holland and he’s a god as is Eric Heiden (American speedskater). It’s probably because cycling isn’t a major sport in your country. Where I’m from it’s a way of life.
Fun fact: After coming back from being shot, Greg Lemond won the 1989 Tour by 8 seconds. 2000 miles of cycling and the margin of victory was just 8 seconds.
The guy he beat, Laurent Fignon, had a ponytail. If he didn’t he would have won. Think about that.
I can remember watching it live on TV, age 11. It was won in a time trial on the final stage. Had such an affect on methat I took up cycling for my whole youth. He is a living legend.
Another fun fact: legendary cycling commentator José de Cauwer was Greg's team leader and nagged the jury about using time trial bars the night before the final time trial. They allowed it. If he didn't, he would have never won
@@onnomeeuwis4001 I can remember how much the French press hated them claiming they were dangerous. And the same summer everyone at my local cycling club who could afford them would buy a pair, 'Scott' Triathelon bars. Because Triatheletes where the to use them.
To this day that tour is still by far my favorite. That rivalry was epic between Lemond and Fignon. I must admit I enjoyed the Lance Armstrong days of cycling. He was inhuman, a titan....until we found out he was cheating do achieve that level of capability. However, even before I knew about the cheating, Lemond was still by far my favorite of the two riders. Lemond's grace and love of the sport eclipsed Armstrong in so many ways. I always hated how the cycling world turned on him.
Lance was my childhood hero. The only reason why I watched Tour de France. It felt too good to be true when he won 7 straight titles, well it was exactly that.

I've watched a couple documentaries on Lance. I think the way he treated LeMond and other accusers is even worse than the doping. He's a great athlete and most other cyclists were doping too, so he basically won on an even playing field. But he was horrific to a lot of people, and deserves all the backlash he receives (for the doping and lying too).
Totally agree think the stripping of his titles isn’t just because of the doping but he was a real bully and wasn’t just a coping bystander but he was a pioneer in doping cycling which is a shame because he’s top ten all time cyclists
No, it was not a level playing field. Yes, pretty much everyone on the tour was doping at the time, but some people respond differently to PED, and he had the most sophisticated doping program. To give him any credit with the "everybody does it" excuse is absurd.

Anyone who is a long member of the cycling community dating back to: even before, Lemond knows about this. Lemond was a truly powerful cyclist from the time he was a Junior. One of his Professional World titles was won with a busted rear wheel against one of the greatest sprinters of the time ( Sean Kelly ). He also competed in most ;if not all, of the Classics. Greg is very personable and enjoys helping others out. Lance is very egotistical, he just loves himself. I remember when he was a Junior triathlete, which he was very good. When he entered Pro-cycling the team first had Phil Anderson as his Mentor. Phil described him as a good rider and will be a good domestique ( a good worker ) for the team. I was in the business then and when Lance started to overpower the top riders, the first thing that came to my mind was doping. See Greg was always a top rider Lance wasn't.

Greg LeMond's last stage time trial comeback to win the 1989 tour was one of the greatest moments in sports history, never mind cycling.

This video was done so well and the narration was amazing. Great work for sure. Lance got me into cycling and statistically did so for hundreds of thousands of people during his time. Never in my life experiences someone be such a hero and such a villain at the same time lol
That was one of my favorite comments ever on CZcams. So many people were huge Lance fans and still fully support him and look past his cheating. Or just make lame excuses for him. You on the other hand appreciate some good he did for you and others but admit what he did was wrong. It's kinda a refreshing comment to read because I'd agree 100% with it.

Stage 17 2006 TDF, Landis probably had more drugs in him than blood.
Yeah, I love Clara and I love Beef History and I love SB Nation videos, but that's a pretty glaring oversight right off the bat.
i remember watching that stage live, it was unbelievable. he was literally superhuman, riding past other elite riders on climbs like they were standing still. in particular i remember seeing the look in the other riders' eyes as he smoked them all, the bug eyed disbelief. landis was probably the domino that finally needed to fall to give the sport the will to end doping - a reigning winner caught red handed and green blooded.
Especially since Landis lost huge amount of time the previous stage. All sudden BOOM he's not only he's making up time, he's destroying the pack.
@@kicking222 I think for the sake of brevity, they glossed over his part. But you are right, it was an important part of the story. The full story of LeMond v Armstrong would need an hour plus.
So, the thing with that is, Landis effectively was riding that race under protest. They pinged him on Stage 17, so unlike, Armstrong, or Riis, or Contador they had him nailed while the race was still underway. It was like, he was out, but in case the test turned out wrong, it'd be weird to have have cost the winner his chance at a title.

Imagine how the history would be different if both of them were friendly with each other, with Greg being a very supportive figure to the growth of Lance as an athlete.
A valid point. I think Lemond should have treaded lightly here, especially at first. He was making rash statements which were true, but were based on hearsay (at the time). I would have just collected my evidence not letting anyone know what I was doing and then at some point with concrete facts present my case. Lemond put himself out on a limb. He of course was vindicated, but he took a chance based on circumstantial evidence. I think that Lance Armstrong would have imploded with or with out Lemond's input. Armstrong was and possible still is a very arrogant, self centered person. With that level of emotional intensity, along with cheating to obtain his goals, it was inevitable he was going to trip and fall.
Loving the "Uh, weird" inputs! This is exactly how all Lance Armstrong stories should be told; with ridicule and mockery just as he did to all others that questioned him early on.

The infamous 1989 final stage time trial, where Lemond had such a legendary time trial, and basically introduced aero helmets and aero bars to road cycling, that he made the final day of the tour a real edge of your seat event, and won on the final day. Something almost no one else has done. It would be an amazing Rewinder episode to go with Phil Liggett's "THE CROWD HAS REALIZED IT, LAURENT FIGNON HAS LOST THE TOUR DE FRANCE" call.
I met Greg in 2000? in Beaver Creek. He was so generous to spend about 10 minutes recounting the shooting and some tour stories. Such a nice man.

As a Colombian I hope Egan doesn't dope, but he's signed by INEOS so he's probably gonna develop gills soon. Still, it's a great sport but doping is just basically second nature on it. It's sad. Also yeah LeMond is a beast, I admire him deeply.

bongo 155 has it right. Cadel Evans was clean. lrony is the same people/person hired both Lance and Cadel to their first pro contracts. Lance with Motorola and Cadel with Volvo/Canondale for mountain biking. One the greatest cheater and fraud in all of sport, the other a champion in two sports with tremendous integrity while all of his competition was cheating and he knew it.

It's important to understand how shocking Greg LeMond's victories were - he wasn't just the first American to win. He was the first person who wasn't from Western Europe to win - that's how tight knit the European cycling scene was. Even now, there's only been 3 non-Europeans - Greg, one Australian and one Colombian.

Lemond literally made money off attacking lance with all those stupid books and movies him and David Walsh did on him🤣 notice how lemond never attacked anyone else that was doping ... Just the guy with money.
This was a really good summary of Lemond and Armstrong. It helped to round out my understanding of the whole Armstrong centered drama. I had never heard of the shooting that Lemond had to endure. Turkey loads are with bigger pellets and are heavier loads too! The fact is I think I'm fairly objective with my thinking on all of this since I never really got wrapped up into competitive cycling news when it was all going on.

True Gooner sort of, but not really. Because certain teams had better access to the best doping programs. The postal service had more money, so it was way easier to do the best and most efficient EPO, and avoid being caught. So it’s not truly a level playing field. But it’s still insane lance didn’t crash out or have a single bad day over 7 straight years.

Gonna chime in with a "technically", here - if he's writing for a British paper, that would make him a British journalist in one sense of the word, as he is participating in British journalism. If he were in America writing for the New York Times, by one usage of the word he would be an American journalist. I'm not disagreeing that it could have been made more clear, and I can't guarantee that Clara recognized that Walsh was Irish, but it's not 100% incorrect.

LeMond kinda sounds French anyway......
