The World Cup beef that shattered Ireland's dreams | Roy Keane vs. Mick McCarthy

  • Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane are both Irish soccer sensations.Mick saw greatness playing for Ireland, and then became a respected manager while Keane’s stacked up accomplishments with Manchester United, proving himself to be one of the greatest to ever play the game.
For the 2002 World Cup, McCarthy was Ireland’s manager, and Roy was Ireland’s star. What could go wrong?
Apparently, so so much. While Ireland defied the odds and earned point after point in their difficult World Cup qualifying group that included The Netherlands and Portugal, behind the scenes, things between star and coach were rocky. Keane technically quit and rejoined the team one night! And what do you know, things escalated from there into a huge blow up in front of the team that included obscenities and accusations.
The pairing of McCarthy and Keane could have lead to nothing but success for Ireland - but it didn’t. Because these two are like oil and water. Which just so happen to be two key ingredients for a savory slab of beef.

Goalies are extremely important but their training are no more exhausting than the rest of the team, at least in my primary school where I was the first choice goalie and captain of the team, the only time I was as or more tired than the rest of the team are practices where I hurt my hands halfway and played as defender for the rest

It's interesting hearing Keanes take on it.
He was angry that his national side was constantly so unprofessional. From preparation, to logistics. He spat the dummy at that World Cup because the Irish management were a shambles.
He insisted that the side had to act more professional and be supported as such.
    That was correct.

  • @zhiyuanchen6211
    @zhiyuanchen6211 Před 4 lety +106

What made that beef so intense during that time was because:
    1. Having played at Manchester United for so many years, Keane was used to the standards Sir Alex Ferguson set during preparation and matches. He was a fiercely competitive personality who knew what was needed to win trophies, and the Irish setup was anything but conducive to that. McCarthy not doing anything to change that was seen as a broken promise.
    2. Having reached the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup, Jack Charlton was seen as a near-god by the Irish public during that time. Older players like McCarthy deferred to him without question, but that opinion wasn't shared by the younger players, particularly Keane. This is probably how it all started.
    3. For many years Ryan Giggs didn't play international friendlies because of injury (officially). However, the truth was that Sir Alex had a policy of refusing to release him for these matches, which didn't endear Giggs to the Welsh fans. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a similar policy for Keane, whose playing style meant more time spent on the sidelines than most players.
    4. Keane was not a nice guy when he got drunk and would fight anyone who rubbed him the wrong way. Sometimes his targets would even extend to United and Ireland fans, so what do you think the Irish media's opinion of him would be?
    5. Another one of Keane's personality flaws is that he holds long grudges (Alf-Inge Haaland being the most famous example), possibly because he was written off for being too little as a young player. Whatever the reason, it's not a personality you want to have when resolving prior differences with your manager.

      @@noname-hf9ty
It started in 1997, when Man Utd went to Leeds for a league match (which they lost 1-0). In the final minutes a clearly frustrated Keane lunged in for a tackle on Haaland but ended up injuring himself instead (it was a knee injury that kept the United captain out for about a year). As he was rolling around on the ground Haaland accused him of faking injury, which is the absolute worst thing you can accuse Roy Keane of doing. Four years later Keane would get his revenge in the Manchester derby with that infamous tackle.

McCarthy did what he could managing such a personality. Even though the Saipan trip was his idea, it wasn't his idea for them to have poor accommodations and conditions. That's on the FA. So for Keane to complain about the manager about these kinds of things is petty nonsense that has no place for a country competing at a World Cup. I only went back to look at our 02 World Cup run the other day. Keane would have helped us beat Spain that day we were much the better side on the day but we lacked a leader. We conceded too often, usually first and Ian Harte missing that peno still keeps me awake at night. I was lucky enough to be in Landtowne when we beat Holland and Keane was magnificent, we were down to ten men too. Gary Kelly was sent off for nearly breaking Overmars' leg. I was also at McCarthy's last game against Switzerland. Crazy to think we went from being a stone's throw away from the World Cup quarter finals to being hopeless in the Euro qualifiers.
