Ronaldo's chance to win the World Cup and complete his comeback needs a deep rewind

- Ronaldo faced a ton of pressure in the 2002 World Cup: to return Brazil to international glory, to justify the controversial choices of his coach, and to resurrect his reputation as the world's best footballer after a period of terrible injuries. With only a few minutes remaining in the final vs. Germany, Ronaldo had a chance to put his nation up 2-0, all but guaranteeing a title. Before we see what happened, let's review how we arrived at this moment in history.

For an extra bonus, Ballack finished the season with his team as second in the Bundesliga (the German domestic league), the DFB Pokal (the German domestic cup), the Champions League (the top European club competition) and the World Cup all at once, with all of them being close painful defeats.
Man I'd be pissed.

Dude was one of the most amazing players that ended up getting a reputation of a choke artist when he was just literally. Unfortunately not the best but still one of the best ever
Some players just aren't winners...
One of the most amazing things to watch ever…he scored both goals in the final, the winner in the semi final, and won the golden boot. All pretty much on one leg…one of the best redemption stories ever, after losing the previous final!!
The bum leg along with the hair. Nothing could hold this man back
Lil' Bruddr. He's just got that one good leg... *snif*
Need Neymar to have even half of that kind of redemption
Also remember he got a sizure a day before the 98 final and was playing almost like a zombie followed by his knee injury the next year, his career could've ended right there tragically.

It's weird to say this about a brazillian team, but this was SUCH a Cinderella run. Losing in such a shameful fashion after being the clear favorites in 1998 was a national trauma - I have friends that to this day believe conspirational theories about Nike forcing Brasil to sell out and lose. After that, the team's trajectory mirrored Ronaldo's - a clear downward trend after the greatest prospect in a generation had not one but two career-ending injuries. This WC proved that even a hobbled Ronaldo was better than 99% of healthy football players and delivered one of the most iconic NT performances in brazillian history.
Damn bro spoiler alert
@@julianforyou8773 wdym lol
@@mike04574 I'm joking like he spoiled a 20 year old futbol game lol
not really though, Ronaldo has been on his peak performance during late 90s-early 2K (even with his injury), combined with Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, and Cafu, this team was the true main contender. People slept on them because Scolari played boring tactic and abandoned fans favorite (Romario).
This wasn't so much of a Cinderella run considering who Brazil had to beat to get to the finals. Apart from when they faced England and in the final, Brazil had an obligation to win all their games. And in the final, they faced the worst German WC side since... I don't even know when.
And quite honestly, that 2002 squad is probably Brazil's worst squad to win the WC. It was a team carried by Rivaldo and Ronaldo, Rivaldo being the best player of that World Cup and ended up overlooked by both Ronaldo and Kahn.
No so fun fact: Michael Ballack was runner-up in all the tournaments he played that year (2002): With Leverkusen he lost Champions League against Real Madrid, Bundesliga against Dormund and DFB-Pokal against Schalke, and with Germany he lost the World Cup
actually very fun fact
As a Schalke fan: That is a fun fact
He needs an Untitled episode about him.

I can´t stress enough how critical Kahn was for this deep run for Germany. Just google his highlights against the USA. If you watch the whole match as it goes on, you can literally see the frustration and desperation the US-forwards felt everytime Kahn makes a spectatcular safe or just impersonates a human sized wall in 1vs1 situations. This german team was fine, but also horrendous in defensive chemestry and quality. South Korea or the US should have knocked us out of the tournament, Kahn wouldn´t let that happen. The only mistake he made was against the greatest striker of his generation. Brazil deserved this world cup and I´m happy Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho got a titel, well deserved.
Don't forget Torsten Frings handball against the USA that wasn't called either.
That Germany team HEAVILY relied on Kahn. Would honestly say the ‘06, ‘10 and ‘14 German teams were clearly better than ‘02.
I remember Germany against South Korea, it felt like Khan was stopping EVERYTHING, such a performance
When you have that many 1-0 wins, along with the PK shoot-out, yeah, HLs made the greatness into an absolute legend. Amazing.
Kahn is the best keeper I think I’ve ever seen. You couldn’t beat him 1v1
For non-Brazilian viewers, Ronaldo's haircut in 2002 was inspired by a very famous comic book in Brazil, Turma da Mônica (translated as Monica's Gang or Monica and Friends), being similar to Smudge's (Cascão) haircut. And it was so iconic that many people in Brazil look to repeat it from times to times, including Brazil's current number 9 Richarlison, who made it some years ago and promised to Ronaldo he will make the Cascão haircut if Brazil wins the WC this year.
Sorry that brasil didnt win the world cup

Oliver Kahn was my favorite keeper growing up, playing keeper myself. Total beast.
Kahn the Titan (it rhymes in German)
Kahn will always be my favorite even tho I have never supported Germany. I also liked Buffon a lot
ΠΟΥ ΠΑΊΖΕΙΣ ΤΈΡΜΑ ΦΊΛΕ;
The shot at the end with him standing alone in the goal, tossing a water bottle in frustration, is like five frames, but it's enough to break my heart for him.
As a keeper I had two idols, Kahn for his goalkeeping and Chilavert for his goalscoring!
I genuinely feel as great as Ronaldo was he still does not get enough credit, man literally could have been the greatest player of all time if it wasnt for injuries and this comeback story is a prime example of his greatness.
I guess his final few years, when he earned the moniker "Fat Ronaldo," colored the perception a bit, but I agree - in his (far too short) prime, he was unplayable.
The fact that he accomplished so much in his career while still being considered as a "what if" is a testament to his greatness

As a kid in Brazil I have two distinct memories of the world cup. Me crying after losing the finals in 98 and shouting and partying with my family on the streets after this match. This game is just special.
Yeah but brasil is big, imagine Croatia, we were second last time around and people were crazy, if we win the roof will be on fire.
@@viktorkopinc4055 I mean we bout to see what happens Friday
@@viktorkopinc4055 I was happy for Croatia in 2018 and I love Modric, absolute monster and he teach Vini jr with many tricks (Vini jr himself said it on an interview after the 1st round) but I'm Brazilian so I have no choice, Croatia's dream has to end right there.
Agree. All I am saying is Brasil can't comprehend what it would mean to win the world cup, since croatia was defeated in 98 by a guy scoring the only two goals of his career, also Ćiro decided to leave out Boban from Ac Milan out of the team. 2018 VAR decision broke us plus the extra 90 minutes we played in the same span as france. So I hope we prevail, you folks have 5, wanting more is pure greed from the fans. I miss my favourite fiery one, Eduardo Da Silva, my Idol.
@@viktorkopinc4055 it’s not greed man, for sure it would be a Cinderela story if Croatia wins the cup and i’m pretty sure brazilians would root for ya if we fall in the quarterfinals. But this year WC means a lot for us, we got our butts kicked at home in 2014, then lose in a thriller in 2018 and off the fields, our country has been political splited in a way we’ve never seen before. For many brazilians, this World Cup means a lot, its a moment of joy after a though though year marked by a lot of tension and political problems.
Yes, Kahn was immense during this World Cup, but credit to backup keeper Torsten Frings making a vital save in Germany's match versus the US.
back-up keeper?
Gods the 2002 WC was a disgusting soup of conveniently atrocious reffing.
Ronaldo is the sole reason I started watching soccer. Him, Ronaldinho and Kaka were the reason I wanted to be Brazilian as a kid😭

Edmundo too!
Ronaldo redemption arc from '98 to '02 is one of the greatest of all time. Great video, as always!
I'll leave another sugestion, which I think fits perfectly with the Rewinder format: Roberto Baggio penalty miss in the 1994 deserves a deep rewind!
The Divine Ponytail was the star of this World Cup up until that moment.
We need a rewinder on the 2022 world cup final someday
Please make a deep rewind for:
- Brazil v Germany 2014 WC (can be in 2024 in the 10 year celebration)
- Casillas's save from Robben's shot in the 2010 WC final (Netherlands v Spain)
- Greece v Portugal in the 2004 Euro
- Eder's goal vs France in the 2016 Euro (Portugal v France)
- Petkovic's goal vs Vasco in the final of the 2001 Campeonato Carioca (Flamengo v Vasco)
- Adriano's last second goal vs Argentina in the 2004 Copa América final (Brazil v Argentina)
- Watford v Leicester in the 2013 Championship playoff semifinal
The Hand of God and the Goal of the Century deserve a deep rewind, but how Will they handle TWO moments in history in a single video?
Oh man, Kahn. Dude was him at the time, such an insane keeper
Him and Buffon are practically untouchable classic players of football's history
2002 German team also had Miroslav Klose whose selection was heavily criticized by german media but turned out to be one of Germany's legend and ironically defeat Ronaldo's record in '14 in that 7-1 thrashing.
Klose was the definition of sleeper hit. That 8-0 trashing was the first time I pledge support to a football team.
Il Fenomeno is one of the greatest of all time and would get even more recognition if it wasn't for his terrible injuries. I grew up watching him play and it was always a joy. One of the top 5 goal getters of all time in my book.
And Kahn...der Titan! What a goalkeeper, one of the best to ever play this sport. His presence on the pitch and his goalkeeping heroics were unbelievable - especially against the USA, it really was Kahn and Ballack against the world in this tournament.
This is the World Cup that made me fall in love with the game. I would stay up or wake up to watch it especially that Brazil team.
This was worst and lamest world cup along with 2018.

As a non-american fan, I adore your soccer videos, please make more.
I'd love if you made a Rewinder on more iconic moments, like Maradona against England, or the Suarez handball against Ghana in 2010
4:43 You'd think after 20 years the pain would go away, but no. Still hurts.
While Brazil were deserving champions for sure, this event altering the narrative of what most likely is the single greatest World Cup tournament by a goalkeeper (as a German, I can tell you you were *quite* generous with your description of the German team) - possibly even player, period - is my go-to example of how cruel sports can be.
It's a real shame he struggled with knee injures throughout all his career, god knows how many records he would've broken if he didn't have them. He everything, pace, stamina, dribbling, shooting, was practically a perfect striker.
A couple of extra notes:
Ballack was suspended because he got a yellow card in the semi-finals against South-Korea. FIFA would change the rules to prevent this from happening in the next WC so the best players can play in the final.
Pressure was so high in Brazil, that even the President of Brazil wanted Romário to go. Scolari was never a master tactician, but he knew how to build a tight group and motivate them, specially in the knock-out stages. After him, sometimes you'll see strange rosters by Brazil because of the pressure (corruption?) by agents and others to promote players by having them play or be on the squad for a couple of games. Scolari was the last independent manager they had and it's not a surprise that they haven´t won the WC since 2002, although 2022 might be different, because they are stacked with young talent.
After that horrible injury by Ronaldo, as a football fan, it was nice to see a glimer of what he was before in this WC. That was a great comebck story.
And the referees were horrible in this WC.
That goal against Turkey really exemplifies everything that made Ronaldo great. The ball control, dribbling, burst of speed in a short distance (post injury Ronaldo wasn't the speed demon he used to be) and more than anything, the little flick of the boot as a shot. Ronaldo seemed to be capable of shooting, with power and accuracy, from anywhere and in anyway he wanted. It didn't matter that there was no angle, no space, no time, or that the position favored his left foot: as long as there was day light between him and goal, he was a threat.
This world cup is where i feel in love with football thank you el phenomenon
Tbh that the German team even did get to the finals was a miracle with the squad at that time. Kahn and Ballack pulled the team there and this video is proof.
Remember seeing the loss at a public viewing back then.
Gotta love that the 2002 world cup was one of the first HD broadcasts ever and its footage has aged so well
It's funny how the 2002 Brazillian team is legendary nowadays. I remember it being heavly criticized by the media (even Pelé) at the time and being one of the underdogs of the tournament at the beginning.
And then history happened and everyone loves this team today.
Another fun fact is that half of the team played in Brazil such as Marcos, Kleberson and Gilberto. Some great unkown players at the bench were Edilson, Ricardinho, and at the time Kaká.
More context:
- Years later, Romário gave an interview saying that he never got the chance to hook-up with the flight attendant, losing both on the world cup and the flight attendant
- Romário's antics is enough to make a entire video on it's on, including:
- Telling Pelé to shut up and mind his own business, in national television
- Fighting with fans, chairman, giving the finger to fans, fighting with coaches, and teammates mid-game
- Famously hated training, dissapearing for days at the time, just showing up minutes before the start of the game
- Being kick-out of the match for punching Simeone in the face, then travelling back to Rio in the matter of hours just to play fut-volley
- When he played for Barcelona, Romário wanted to go to the Carnival but Cruyff would only let him go if he scored a hat-trick, Romário did, and he left the game just before the 1°st half ended
- During the World Cup Qualifiers of 94, Brazil was facing a serious possibility of getting defeated in the last match against Uruguay, and not going the World Cup, all the coaches resisted calling Romário until the very end, and Romário got called reluctantly, and Brazil won the decisive match for 2x0, with Romário scoring all the goals, and the rest is history.
- Regarding to the injury Ronaldo had just before the finals against France, the injury was as bad as everybody said it was, but minutes just before the game, the physicians did a battery of exams on Ronaldo, and they said that Ronaldo was ok, so Zagallo decided to put him on the starting eleven.
- When Brazil won the World Cup, EVERYONE wanted Ronaldo haircut, including me, lol.

awesome video, I'm brazilian and was watching some stuff about this story, happy to see this being talked about in such a great channel!
Awesome video!!! A lot of people do not give enough credit to Scolari for this World Cup, especially in Brazil. As mentioned in the video he really is criticized (over the top in my opinion) because of his conservative and defending tactics, and of course his reputation was hugely damaged because of what happened under his command in Brazil 2014. The fact that this team had so much talent makes people often underestimate his role in this title campaign, as some people will still claim Brazil won it despite of the coach, but overview of everything Brazil went through before the title really show how important he was to the 5th.
Brilliant work with this one . As a Turkish football fan I will never forget the semi final goal he scored against us.
Also I think you guys should really consider making a rewinder video about Euro 2008 Quarter Final Turkey vs Croatia . People who have seen it would agree it has one of the most dramatic endings to a football game.
My first World Cup ever and Brazil was the first team I saw playing, if I remember correctly against Turkey, so I picked them to cheer for, and would you know it they won.. 😂 and that's the story why I'm a fan of Brazil and always will be.
PS. That triangle haircut of Ronaldo was so bizarre, I remember wanting the same but my mom luckily wouldn't allow it
Here in Brazil, this haircut was a fever! I remember so many kids with the "cascão" on the street of my Rio de Janeiro in 2002 hahahahaha
Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Gilberto Silva, Denílson, Kaká, Lúcio, Marcos... man, what a team. And yeah, that haircut was very popular in Brazil back then with the kids, I remember seeing a lot of kids in my school with that haircut, although personally I already found it too bizarre for me even as a 10-year-old. I was a nerdy kid.
Thanks for the video. You guys rock.
Quick notes about this tittle run:
Emerson only Injured himself because he decided to play goalie in a friendly game with team mates during training camp and ended up being cut from the squad days before the tournament.
Ronaldo's first goal was a product of "desobidience". During practices Felipão forbade him from going for second chance balls because he could reinjure himself.
Oh, and Rivaldo won the best player in the world award while playing for Barcelona.
As the World Cup progresses, I expected you to make a rewind of a Brazil-Germany matchup. But it was a pleasant surprise for you to bring this Brazil-Germany.
Footnote: That 2014 Brazil-Germany was pretty much a kind of sequel of this one, because, Brazil's football never really found itself since 2002 (maybe, only now in 2022) and Germany, which wasn't that good in 2002, made a readjustment in their football philosophy that led to that beatdown 12 years after.
However, Germans were quite smarter after 2014 and quitted the following 2 WCs in the Group Stage avoiding another sequel of this rivalry, bc Brazil, in our particular way, rebuilded the Seleção and bring back the roots that resulted in the 5 titles before, while Germany now is on the role of the team stuck in the past. So... maybe a Brazil-Germany in a knockout round nowadays could be pretty much a complete revenge of 2014
Well Done, Secret Base
Great content as always. This one is special, was my first world cup, I was 8 yo and couldn't be happier as a Brazilian kid
This is gorgeous to watch. In 2002 I was a 7 6 year old Brazilian, and this moment made love the phenomenon forever
2002 was probably the weirdest WC ever, with openly partial referees elevating South Korea into the semis. The fact that referee teams were arbitrarily mixed around lead to atrociously bad decision-making. The fact that Germany was able to make it to the finals without facing any serious contenders and based on Kahn's stellar performances alone is proving this point further. Sucks for him lo make one of the biggest mistakes in his entire career on this biggest stage possible.
Don't forget that Germany had that controversial handball by Torsten Frings against the USA.
As a Frenchman, worst WC ever! At least I made some money when Germany beat South Korea.
Can we also mention the improbable Turkey into the semi finals.

I vaguely remember that year that Brazil was not believed to be in top shape. They were not favored even though they had been the favorite in 1994 and 1998 and had reached the Final in both of those years. All the hype was saying they shouldn't be as much of a factor this year. Yet they won it all anyway and haven't won it all since. This video really helped shine light on why they weren't favored in 2002. I always know the Rewinder deep dives are going to be high quality, even when the "moment in history" isn't always this shining iconic thing that sticks with everyone, you still told a great story around it.

Kahn in his prime was a monster. He was the most competitive player I've ever seen. Sometimes, he went nuts on the pitch, which was kinda part of his appeal. (Some examples: He tried to kung fu kick a Dortmund player, grabbed a Leverkusen player by the neck and scored a goal with his fists after a corner kick.) His reflexes were out of this world. Neuer is a better keeper when it comes to footballing skills and ruling over the penalty area, but on the line Kahn was the best keeper Germany ever had.
Khan’s 02 is quite possibly the most impressive GK tourney performance i’ve seen
Ronaldo had such bad injury that doctors at the time didn't know if he would WALK again. Then he came back after almost two years recovering, got the golden boot and the title of the World Cup. Awesome video, keep it up.
this is the first in many soccer heartbreaks of mine since 2001 (the first time I pledge support to teams), from Liverpool's league drought, AS Roma's post-2001 mediocrity, and Germany's long journey to 2014. This game is why the Mineirazo and 2014 final win feels so satisfying to me.
I am Brazilian and remember all of these facts, headlines and stories. This is really well done!
YEAH, SECRET BASE, THANKS
You guys really underplayed the drama involved in Ronaldos sickness. Like that is one of the biggest and dramatic story’s in sports history
Here in Italy, the blatant mockery of common sense that was our exit against South Korea was absolutely heartbreaking. It was such a blatant shameful robbery and FIFA did nothing.
If Italy had the refs going their way and one, you would take it wouldn't you? And plus Italy has a long reputation of playing dirty soccer
@@TheKrazyk2010 no, not like this. A referee's honest mistake going your way is one thing, clearly and shamelessy stealing a game you have no business winning is another. In front of the world nonetheless.
One thing I remember from 2002 in Turkey is, the barber shops here would put signs up reading "Get your Ronaldo haircut here". 2002 World Cup was a huge deal here as Turkey made it into the tournament after 48 years. And despite breaking our hearts, Ronaldo was an idol. I would say 1 in 20 kids were walking around with their hair cut same as Ronaldo's.
Germany be like: y'all gonna pay for that.
I'm so glad you guys made this, I grew up with this era of players and Ronaldo was the most famous athlete in the world at that point. France 98 was my first memory of having watched a whole world cup at 7 years old. I was conflicted since I also fell for the hype of Ronaldo but found myself cheering for France as they continued to do the impossible throughout the world cup. I was so looking forward to Korea/Japan 2002 to see Brazil make a comeback. By the way you guys totally forgot about Roberto Carlos, one of the best defenders in the world and he was a major player for Brazil during the 2002 world cup run...sad you guys didn't mention him.
What "impossible"?
@@kb5509 win when they were not favored to win, if you don't know your football history kindly stfu
@@xxkanezxx6903 they were the hosts with a host of top players. What are on about.
France winning a World Cup, in France, with Zidane, Barthez, Desailly, Blanc, Lizerazu, Thuram, Djorkeaff, Petit and Deschamps, an 11 of mainly well regarded, world class players (5 of whom had received Ballon d'Or votes at the most recent awards, 1 of whom came 3rd), that had just got to the semi finals of the Euros, faced 1 top side in Italy (with major internal strife of their own), whilst being the odds on 2nd favourite to win behind a Brazil side who were basically down to 10 men with their best player completely out of it is not achieving "the impossible".
If your understanding of World Cup history hasn't progressed since learning the majority of it in a Panini sticker book at 7, maybe don't profess to be an expert.
My first ever world cup. What a throwback. I followed every match at 7 years old lol. Their theme music that year was cool as well
Finally a video about the 2002 final
As a Brazilian, thank you for this video, Secret Base
This is the first World cupboard I remember. Kahns Performance that tournament was insane, I will never forget those saves against Korea.
Kansas over Memphis. 2008 National Championship. Mario's Miracle deserves a Deep Rewind.
6:58, yeah us Aussies know about that Confederations Cup 1997 win. They beat us 6-0 in the final and BOTH Ronaldo and Romario scored hattricks (and we had our striker Mark Viduka sent off at about 2-0).
Esse canal é show. Parabéns pelo conteúdo.
Rewinder é o melhor quadro do Secret Base
The original and best Ronaldo ❤️
The only Ronaldo I’m aware of. There’s a Portuguese player with Ronaldo as a last name but his name is not simply Ronaldo. A lot of people these days seem to make that mistake, I find it very disrespectful towards Ronaldo.
I can’t wait for the rewinder on the 2022 World Cup final
Appreciate you saying 'Football' 🙏🏼
