The 2011 USA-Japan Women's World Cup final had a wild finish that needs a deep rewind

- The 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany was a rollercoaster, and that includes the two teams that made it to the final. Still mourning the effects of a devastating earthquake in March, Japan vowed to inspire the people back home, and overcame a group stage loss and an early deficit against Sweden to reach the championship game. The United States, despite their #1 ranking, came startlingly close to missing the tournament entirely, then depended on one of the clutchest goals of all time to make it past Brazil.
When those two teams met, the drama didn't stop. The US rained shots in the first half, but couldn't get any on goal. Then the youngest player on the team, Alex Morgan, subbed in to play hero. But at the moment from which this episode rewinds, costly mistakes and threatening attacks have put Japan and their star, Homare Sawa, on the doorstep of sending the final to penalty kicks, a scary proposition for the US.

"Welcome to a moment in history"
Amazing phrase for this series. Love it.
Once the current Women's World Cup is done, I have a beef suggestion: Hope Solo vs. the USWNT.
Jill Ellis Vs Sound tactics
Could also do a Collapse, explaining her general fall from grace.
Hope Solo vs. her family
Hope and Jerramy vs The World
What happened to Hope?
troy deeney's unbelivable playoff winner in the EFL championship semifinal during injury time in 2013 rewinder would be amazing. i still think it's the greatest moment in recent football history.
LokeW12 it truly is
Winning a playoff semifinal with the very last kick? And doing it immediately after saving a penalty kick down on the other end? Yeah, that’s pretty epic.
Um, i dont mean to be smug. But “football” in America is a mans game. We call “your football” soccer for a reason. I could care less to see what it is youre talking about, but I’m not gonna hate on it. I’m only here because i watched this live and this 2011 U.S. women’s team was the first ever women’s World Cup i cared to watch.
@@tmzebe530 is a troll don't feed him
Yes. The small stadium, and how he jumped into the stands. Everyone in that stadium was a legit fan and got to see a once in a lifetime event.
I will continue to ask for baggio’s penalty kick in the 94 world cup final
josé paulo faria me too
YES!
Pls no
Epic moment and definitely warrants it!
I'm an Italy fan and might as well just get it over with so I don't have to watch it or hear about it requested again.
Great Video, as always. That Japanese team overcame real-life odds that no sports team should ever face - they provided a beacon of hope and a moment of joy for a nation in despair. You can be sure they inspired many, many more people outside of their shores as well - a special team, an incredible story
This happens alot in sports. Houston Astros 2017. New Orleans Saints 2009. Boston Red Sox 2013. One big one that did NOT happen? 2001 Yankees.
@@Rao665 With all due respect, I don't think any of the teams you mentioned had to deal with a devastating earthquake and an impending nuclear contamination while prepping for their games - so I think this story stands out on its own at the very least
@@Jaqen-HGhar True....almost. Look at that Steve Gleason block punt. Hate to even suspect, almost as if a lineman stepped aside...
Sujoy Chakravarthi hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017 with 125 billion in damage and thousands of rescues, but not even close to how many deaths Japan had. Still, it was a big deal for the Astros to win the World Series because of what the hurricane did to the city. Thankfully, my neighborhood didn’t flood but it was an amazing feeling when I watched the Astros win.
Sort of Manchester United post Munich
I've watched the corner kick 5 times now and I still don't know how that shot went in. The angle on that kick in the way that sAwa twisted her body and basically kicked it with her heel was unbelievable. Japan deserve to win that game, one of the best shots I've ever seen.
For it's arrogance the US also deserved to lose.
As unfortunate of a loss this for the USA Japan truly deserved it after the devastation they went through after the tsunami hit the power plant.
How does that mean they deserve it??
This tragedy has nothing to do with football.
@@notwelcome2452 it does have something to do with their country. It gives their country some hope of something good in a time when everything is not in a good place
@@notwelcome2452 its like hurricane Katrina and how that blocked kick in their first game back in a year lit up the whole stadium
I am going to sound cold but that does not have nothing to do with the sport.
Double negative aside sport is much deeper and significant beyond just the rules and the game. Especially on the world stage. It was an incredible emotional uplifting for a hurting nation.
Perfect timing for this keep the good videos coming
I keep rewatching this game highlights many times. As a Brazilian, I love football and Sawa's goal is maybe my preferred moment in Women's WC history.
Yes. US showed great quality, but that's why you play the games. The most skilled team doesn't always win. That's why sport is the best unscripted drama. Everyone can tell what SHOULD happen. Football: so beautiful. so cruel.
USA-Japan: great rivals, even better friends. 🇺🇸🇯🇵
Didn't the US nuke Japan?🤔
@@automaticcaptions
They were liberating nukes
Full of freedom and fun👍🏽
@@jeremiahtisdell4823 😂😂😂
@@jeremiahtisdell4823 boy, do I love those freedom nukes.
@@automaticcaptions Well Japan's super weapon was poisoned fleas....so there is that.
This is my favourite World Cup of all time!! So underrated! Can’t write a script like that.
As someone from the USA I’m happy the Japanese won during a hard time for their nation
After all now have 4 of em so that one loss didn't matter
I remembered exactly what happened that day. My coworker and I had lunch at our local sushi restaurant and everyone there was watching the game, more than half of them were japanese fans in their blue jerseys. When Japan scored the goal that tied the game, everyone erupted in cheers. When Japan won the penalty kick shootout, everyone was hugging eachother with smiles and tears. One of the servers told me that his uncle died in the tsunami and he was a big soccer fan and how happy he would be if he knew that Japan won their first world cup. I will never forget that day.
This match was insane... probably one of the greatest sports matches I've ever seen. The way the Japanese came from behind TWICE to equalize and ultimately seal the deal in PKs to pull off an enormous upset.. What a day for Japan🙌🙌
Latest men’s final in 2022 very reminiscent of this match although France didn’t win unlike Japan.
2011 Japan reminds me so much of the 2009 Saints. Amazing stories in the wake of tragedy.
You could also put the 2017 Houston Astros in there too.
GreenBayPayton And their coaches telling their players to deliberately injure opposing players. What a tragedy that was
2013 Red Sox World Series with the Marathon Bombing earlier that year too.
Busby babes in 1968
This happens more common than you think in sports.
That Japan team is proof that something beautiful can grow out of the ashes
the fact they met in 2015 again shows how good these 2 teams were....amazing competition between 2 nations
.........or radiation
So glad that you told this story, what a huge moment for Japan, and the beginning of a US/Japan rivalry which defined this sport for this decade
Yes! I remember this game vividly. Sawa was so good in this game.
Dang time flies. Remember watching this like yesterday.
Even when you know what’s gonna happen you still get the chills. I love this series
I get REALLY happy.
I've never even watched a full game of women's soccer, and this is my favorite Deep Rewind yet. The stage was set so perfectly.
This was an awesome episode, was on edge the whole time!
USA JPN 💪🏽👍🏽🏆😎
That one brought me to tears. Truly the most beautiful game in the world
Great video. Came to the video without knowing the result and you actually made me feel anxious .
This was a really good game. I'm glad I decided to watch it live.
I remember watching this live and knew that there was no way the US was gonna take it. The whole game just seemed like it was meant for the underdogs. It was a great final. The women’s World Cup always gives some amazing games.
They didn't deserve it with their boasting.
Honestly true, and the 2015 WC seemed to be a way of the universe apologizing to the US team for the catastrophe. You could've never convinced me the 2011 WC was possible if I had seen the 2015 game first. 2015 USWNT was on a warpath and even Germany found themselves bludgeoned by a team out for blood and gold.
Amazing video. The ending made me cry
One of the best world cup matches that I've seen.
I saw this live and was so happy for Japan 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
this is one of the best episodes in the series that goal was AMAZING
I remember watching this with my brother in real time. This World Cup is still such a memorable final.
Simon Gagne Game 7, 2010 against the Bruins. Flyers advance after trailing 3-0 in the series and game 7.
Also trailed 3-0 during game 7.
I would LOVE this
Please SB Nation
Why they didn't win the cup
They did one on the Yankees winning the 2003 ALCS and they didn’t win the World Series.
2010 US vs Algeria?
Every time I hear, "Welcome to a moment in history" in almost every video, the suspense and emotion hits harder and more real
That was an awesome moment
The 2005 UEFA Champions League Final deserves a deep rewind
Wow, I remember watching this live. It’s crazy how much has changed in my life and the world since July 2011. Really cool.
I remember watching this and being so happy for Japan. I'm an American that grew up in Tokyo, and I had actually just moved to the US a few weeks before this game. I experieced the March 11, 2011 earthquake and saw close-up the devastation that followed, and it was just amazing to see the Japanese team win the World Cup and give a still-reeling country something to be proud of!
this is my favorite episode
I remember being so happy and proud to be a viewer of this game... incredible emotions and talk about destiny.
Tottenham v. Man City or Tottenham v. Ajax both 2nd legs 2018-19 Champions League

Yes
The Ajax match is about the comeback of a team through the help of a Hattrick in the second half while there was an absolutely crazy match overall at the Etihad

Do Mario Gotzes goal to win the 2014 World Cup
He should also do Iniesta’s goal at the 2010 WC, and Zidane’s infamous headbut in 2006
Why this? It's boring. Germany were favourites and they won, great for them but doesn't make a good story. These are underdog stories, more about the history and buildup than the actual moment.
@@timeluster Agreed. The real story of that world cup was the germany brazil semi.
heartbreaking...
This and vs Brazil were amazing games.
This was before I got into football but this was a great game to go back and watch
Great presentation..- Football is always set in its happenings of society.
could there possibly be a rewinder on the controversial home plate call in 2007 between the Padres and Rockies in game 163?

crazy clutch
There are goals who come from nowhere and are a major factor in the team's victory.
Sawa's goal is one of them
Can you do a rewinder of either Patrick Maroon's 2OT goal in the 2019 western conference final or Carl Gunnarsson's game winning goal in game 2 of the 2019 stanley cup final
Game 7 of this years Stanley Cup final it was wild
Perhaps too recent.

That was a great moment, but, was largely ignored, "across the pond."
That tournament was awesome, so much drama and late goals
great video. I'm desperate for a 91 world series rewind
Love watching these vids, keep em coming
I don't really follow soccer or the world cup. I'm sure I had heard these results before, but I've long since forgotten them. I thought 100% that the corner was going to be stopped, because of course it's impossible for Japan's story to be that magical. The ending put me in tears because it shocked me so much and it was so touching that I was completely wrong. I guess, as Americans, we don't really have long memories about events where our team lost. What a great moment.
I'll keep saying this until you make this video
Larry Bird's steal deserves a deep rewind.
Zeke's whining afterwards deserves one as well ..lol
Pretty sure we had HD in 2011, what is this 240p footage?
The story you wrote is one of my favorite back then. I watched that game and the outcome made me remember Iraq when they won Asian Cup 2007, both came with a humanitarian crisis back home.
Plz do the Denver vs Baltimore mile high miracle game in 2013 AFC divisional game
You should do an episode on the 96 Olympics Women's Gymnastics Team Finals.
How about Ravens - Broncos in the 2013 divisional round?
Na. Toronto blue jays 92-93 World Series joe carter walk off would be cool. Or montrael expos mid 90’s collapse.
Plz no
I’ll always be slightly sad that the US didn’t win this one but no country needed a win more and needed something to be happy about in the summer of 2011 than Japan did. I’m glad this win was a big damn deal for the country and helped exponentially grow the game by inspiring the next generation of stars.
Also, eternal middle fingers for ESPN for not airing the game live on ABC that day and instead showing tape delayed coverage of the British Open instead despite the world already knowing who won. I didn’t have cable at that point in time and I’ll forever be bitter that I couldn’t watch this game.
That whole tournament was epic! I remember every match like it was yesterday. Both the Brazil and Japan match had me on the edge of my seat! Japan won in the midsts of natural disaster so if anyone woulda beat us I guess it’s good it was them. We got revenge in 2015.
