Manute ∩ Muggsy: The NBA’s tallest and shortest were once teammates battling a “sideshow” label

- While you might not think a 7′7″ player and a 5′3″ player would have much in common, Manute Bol and Muggsy Bogues both had to fight hard to do the same thing: prove they were more than just their height. This feat was made more difficult when a team with struggling attendance, the Washington Bullets, drafted both of them.
As a former short basketball player/bench-sitter, I’m often quick to dismiss super-tall players as nothing more than trees, and laud short players as superior athletes in every single way. Make a statue for the short ones already; it’s not going to cost as much cuz you don’t need as much material.
But Manute, though tall, is not easily dismissed. A Dinka tribesman who made his way to the pros in a new country and new culture, he’s is still the record holder for most blocks in a single game with 15 (tied with Shaq, but Shaq only did it once, Manute managed it twice). The tenacity, strength of character, and athletic skill Manute displayed to succeed in the NBA is extremely impressive.
And Muggsy? Along with Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson, he rocketed the Hornets from expansion team to one of the most popular teams in the NBA. Oh, and he still holds the franchise’s record for most assists and steals.
So, let’s just say we need to see a couple of statues.

"I had a good time with the American people," he told Sports Illustrated in 2001. "I hope they remember me as a good guy who played hard. I wasn't Michael Jordan, but I was somebody called Manute Bol."
Manute was too pure for this world.
his son has a great future in the NBA
Kinda had a tear jerker moment with that quote.
Someone must be cutting onions around here.....what a guy!
btw If y'all also like basketball then y'all should watch this when the finals are over! 🙌 czcams.com/video/t6-ddWhZuNk/video.html
I had no idea Manute Bol did all that amazing humanitarian stuff with his earnings. What a tremendous human being.
Apparently he was essentially broke when he died because he had donated so much to those in need. It’s difficult to comprehend, almost impossible to emulate, but very easy to respect. If I make it to heaven I hope to join whatever gym he goes to. It would be an honor to have Manute Bol block my shot.
sprthrwwychnnl I’m with you 100% on this one
The world could use a lot more of this love, especially right now. #compassion #humility #love
sprthrwwychnnl same
Could not have said it better!
Surprised they didnt bring up the fact that Manute is the only NBA player in history with more blocks than points.
oh damn thats a super interesting fact. appreciate it

@@SonicXisnow2009 That's a great fact, even backed up by a source! Thanks. Hope your comment is seen by a number of people!
What a fantastic thread.
He could rain in some 3’s on occasion
Muggsy was in Space Jam, so he's automatically one of the greatest players of a time
Or as I see it, not even Space Jam could tarnish Mugsy Bogues’ legacy.
Fun Fact #1: According to Bol's passport, he was 5'2". When asked Clippers head coach Jim Lynam asked him what that was all about, Bol explained that he had been sitting down when measured by Sudan officials.
Fun Fact #2: I remember watching an episode of NBA Inside Stuff that profiled Bogues. He mentioned that the children in his neighborhood would ring his doorbell and invite him to play, not understanding that he was a grown man.
Thank you gay vladka putina, very cool facts
The first episode was already a banger but now I’m convinced: this series is a massive dub
With a face like that you shouldn't use worlds like "banger"
@@BiggaNiqqa thats McLovin isn't it?
Another fun fact is that manute may have been much older than we thought, when he came to the US his coach just made up a date and birthday because he had no idea how old he was
That happens a lot with people from underdeveloped and dangerous areas with poor record keeping. From education access to sports eligibility to even likelihood of being adopted, being officially younger than you already are is extremely helpful if you’re in a refugee or student/work visa situation. It sucks that the world works like that, but it makes sense and it adds another dimension to how amazing Manute Bol was.
Heard that recently too
Harb1ng3r would we call his home underdeveloped and dangerous? Tribesmen live longer then us and are a lot smarter then we think.
The Village Hidden In The Hood I mean in terms of the fact that it’s South Sudan. I get what you’re saying, and I’m not trying to insinuate anything about the people there, but the fact is that the country has been engaged in a sequence of brutal revolutionary and civil wars for half a century. As many as ten different groups are actively fighting each other today in South Sudan. Couple that with climate change making sub-Saharan Africa more susceptible to devastating droughts, and yes I would call it dangerous. I have nothing but respect for people trying to build good, happy, fulfilling lives for themselves out there, but it would be disingenuous not to call South Sudan dangerous and objectively wrong to state that the quality-of-life developments present in other areas are present in South Sudan.

I can't believe you guys never mentioned that the MONSTARS took Mugsy Bogues skills in Space Jam.
I saw Manute shortly before he died. Walked into a bar and I thought "That looks just like Manute Bol" before realizing that only one person on earth looks like Manute Bol.
I have no idea if I've ever seen Muggsey Bogues
well, it's easier to see manute bol than to see muggsy bogues
@@GG-bi8tb not anymore
technically I guess now there's a second person that looks like Manute Bol: Bol Bol. and yes i just wrote this comment just so that i could write Bol three times in a row while having it make sense grammatically
To sum it up...
Manute's heart was taller than his actual height.
And Mugsy was an inspiration to all small players across the globe.
It’s a weird detail, but I love that you use the mathematical symbol for intersection in these titles. It’s easy to miss since it also looks like you’re saying Manute n’ Muggsy, but if you know what it is, it’s a dorky little secret that you’re in on, which is my jam. Never stop being awesome Secret Base.
Yeah, it's a nice touch
I’m not familiar with that symbol at all
every time I watch a new Secret Base video my mouth goes from ⋂ to ∪

I am going to "intersect" this comment.
I have never seen Manute Bol in a heat Jersey till now
A manute bol and alonzo mourning frontcourt lineup sounds really interesting right now
On that note, it was weird seeing Alonzo in a Hornets jersery too. I've seen it before, but I'd forgotten and it still throws me off.
I’ve seen every NBA player ever in a heat jersey
@@eyo2953 highly doubt it
@@eyo2953 yeah it's called off-season rumors 😂
There will never be another NBA player who can say he killed a lion with a spear.

This is one of the most heartwarming and inspiring videos of all time!
Basketball is my favorite sport. I like the way they dribble up and down the court.

Manute is a special kinda guy, wish he was still alive today to give us wisdom and maybe dunk on us while shuffling his old man feet
Manute's stature as a humanitarian was greater than his 7'6" height. Sad he passed away early. Best wishes to Bol Bol as he continues his father's legacy, especially in this post season.
Muggsy was one of my favorite players when he was one the Warriors. The skill it takes to be able to play as well as he did against guys who were so much bigger than him made him amazing.
And Manute was somebody that made us laugh. Not because he was some sideshow, but because he dunked without leaving his feet. We used to call it the tippy-toe dunk.
And they both have the same initials: "MB"
"I had a good time with the American people," he told Sports Illustrated in 2001. "I hope they remember me as a good guy who played hard. I wasn't Michael Jordan, but I was somebody called Manute Bol."

Seriously, thank you for mentioning Manute's genuinely incredible heart. One of the reasons Bol has been one of my top 5 favorite players for years was because of just how deeply he cared for not only his home country but everyone around him. I genuinely don't know if there was a kinder or more thoughtful person to EVER play in the NBA. Bless that man, he was taken way too soon from us.
Clara is quickly becoming my favorite writer at Secret Base. Sure, she doesn’t have the insane ideas of John Bois but her writing in the main series here on the channel (rewinder, beef history, etc.) are second to none.
Me seeing that Secret Base posted: Nice made me smile nice
yo this series is a massive dub, it’s such a good way to look back at the interesting parallels between players
yes yes yes yes yes my day just automatically got better
muggsy bogues was so damn UNDERRATED in his prime lol
This may be my favorite episode it's such a pure underdog for love of the game story. Two names every basketball fan should celebrate. Well done.
Manute's height is only matched by his heart. What a generous and thoughtful guy
I love Manute Bol and often talk to friends or students about him. He was one of the most influential athletes of Africa by really doing a lot. He even helped fighting Bin Laden by warning against islamist/terrorist training facilities in Sudan. Great man, loved by his teammates and opponents, and even more by his people. His death was a very big loss.
By islamist do you mean anti Islam or Islamic people
THAT WAS REALLY HEARTWARMING AND I'M GLAD I WATCHED IT.
Muggsy’s coaches really set him up for failure on defense though. Coaches back then didn’t even know what the word “rotation” meant.
you can't really rotate back then
they used to call “illegal defense” which gave the other team technical free throws. If it wasn’t a legit double team teams couldn’t really help like that
@@splashbros-yc9lk Which was almost never called, and teams knew it. Thus, zone defense was de-facto legal.
Want me to back that up with newspaper articles from the time?
Yeah but their stupidity is kinda what allowed him to be on the court... Nowadays if your under six foot and not an elite offensive player your not going to get much PT because no matter how could a defender you are coaches will still think of you as a liability.
Cold Snap refs called it when they wanted to just like how they call defensive 3 seconds now. Maybe a team could get away with it sometimes but definitely not every defensive possession or in the fourth when the game was tight

I really liked this video! Most of your videos are about the sad and disappointing stuff that happens in sports (‘beef’, ‘the worst’, ‘collapse’, ‘untitled’) which I think is great because it’s one of the main things that makes sports so beautiful. But this story was heartwarming, which was great for a change. Keep making videos!
Rewinder idea: Andy Dalton pass to break the Bills playoff drought
As a Ravens fan this would bring me PAIN
As a bengals fan from Sudan seeing this comment on this video makes me happy
As a bills from Sudan seeing this comment on this video makes happy too
Both are legends due to their achievements. Muggsy as a guy who due this height had to fight harder than everyone else in game dominated by big men and Manute as outstanding human who saves so many lives at his home country.
We need more peoples like them. To break barriers, to make the world a better place.
Thank you and greetings from Poland.
This was a great video. I learned a lot of things I wasn't aware of. Thanks for highlighting these two incredible men👍🏾
Probably the earliest I've ever been Long Live Secret base
This channel is amazing. Love the stuff❤
So far I'm really enjoying this series! Keep it up guys!
I love this series. Im really happy you guys started doing this the first episode was great and this one is just the same great with information i never knew please keep this series going. I LOVE SECRET BASE
I loved this! Thanks for making it. All through middle school, I had a picture on my wall, from a magazine, of Manute and Muggsy together. They're a big part of why I fell in love with basketball.
Clara, I think this was your best video yet. The voiceover is so natural and I feel like you're just telling me a story instead of performing for an audience. Really great stuff.
Manute Bol is a legend for everything he did on and off the court. He and Muggsy both deserve recognition for all they did for the game.
This is such a sweet and sincere story. I appreicate y'alls ability to tell this story with compassion.
One of the best videos on basketball players I’ve ever seen. Too many content makers just focus on the on-the-court accomplishments and not on the humanity of the people that play. This was so refreshingly thoughtful.
this is really a story on the spirit of humanity, and not giving up...and doing the right things..unselfish..bravo on this episode..
Loved this. Thanks for these stories that no one else tells.
Great work, Secret Base. The way you tell stories is why I keep coming back.
This is a great video. This is what makes secret base so great, taking sports as the starting point but then widening the view to show a fuller picture.
You should do an overlap of Griffey Sr and Griffey Jr baseball playing careers.
Finally! Was waiting for a overlap video
I’m loving this series already. 😍
First video by this author I liked. No snide remarks. Just facts storytelling and positivity. Refreshing
This is one of y'all best videos.

This is a wholesome piece. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad you highlighted Manute's humanitarian work. My dad and I have always known him as an incredible human being. Truly a great guy.
Thanks for this, it's a truly heartwarming story. Keep up the good work.
this video made me really happy. i love manute and muggsy even more now

This was a great segment, very enjoyable listen
Awesome video with so much info. Made me smile a lot
You should do a rewinder on Liverpool's 3-0 comeback against Milan in The 2005 UCL final. I feel like that game was so tense and emotional that it deserves a rewinder episode.
this new series is amazing tbh
DAMN I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!! 💯💯💯💯
What an amazing story for both men on and off the court. Extremely motivating and powerful in different ways ❤️
As if telling a good story wasn’t enough, you guys also managed to pass an important message about overcoming difficulties and prejudice. Great job SB, you guys are the best in the business

I wonder how successful his son will be.
Bol Bol looks very talented. Hopefully, he picks up the great humanitarian trait too from his dad
His son looks nice
well we can only watch
All star I’m calling it
Killing it in 2k for me
I have so much respect for the both of them on and off the court ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
I'm loving this new series. A bit of beef with a heaping side of wholesomeness.
I wasn't convinced this would be a good series, but I'm more than sold. That episode was awesome.
Another cool little fact is that manute was a lot older then people thought he was, because of where he was born they didnt really keep track of how old you where and i forgot who it was but the person that brought him into the nba said that he lied about manutes age and he accually belived that manute could have been 40 when he came into the league (which would be insane)
I've heard that he was older, but 40 seems to be a bit of a stretch. A lot of people in oral cultures say they are much older.
Excellent video! It was informative and funny but also extraordinarily empathetic.
I know this is a CZcams comment so I'm supposed to just make some dumb inside joke but really all that I want to say is that I sincerely enjoyed the video. Thanks SB!
this was so good, loving this new series
maybe try an overlap episode of bob lemon and bob feller?

They impacted the world and Basketball in different ways, I love it.
this is the second best series. Nothings better than pretty good
I knew this one would be coming it’s amazing
Her voice and narration Clara was nice wow y'all do awesome work !!
Awesome episode!
Man, this was an amazing video.
Muggsy was a very exciting player to watch. I enjoyed playing as him on NBA Jam in the arcade.

Inspirational! 10/10... didn’t realize Bol helped so many people!
This was great. Two of the biggest underdogs who made the NBA and thrived.
