- Two fixable reasons why I think there is a issue with or poor signal strength & range are explained in this video. In this video I'm in Ohio doing a range test with the DJI Mini 3 Pro over a very different landscape compared to my mountains back home.
We are in a wide open territory with just a row of tree's between controller and quad and it was a hard to keep a good signal. I’m using the new DJI RC.

Fantastic test and Video.Thanks Chris for the reassurance on this problem I have opened a ticket with DJI I was hoping for a reply from them saying something similar to what you have said but no. The first reply from them was to send a screen recording of the problem (signal) so that maid me feel that they don’t believe me. I have had another reply saying turn of all apps on the controller and try adjusting the antennas I am using the new RC so I am at a loss but I will persevere with it after listening and watching your video and I hope a firmware update rectifies this problem.
Turning off those things and even doing airplane mode doesn’t do anything that I can confirm anyhow.
They will play dumb while knowing the problem and one day a update will come and it will be like magic. 😂

Great flight Chris. Your reasons about the current signal strength sounds logical to me. I’ve seen a rural CE test and it made just 4km before RTH. I think most of the issues arsing with signal drops are those more flying in areas where there is more interference and it’s hopefully something DJI will address as you say. Agree and hoping you're right. I've only been able to fly from my home in a densely populated, wi-fi riddled development but managed 1000M with no issues (95% over empty ballpark, road and golf course).
It was nothing more than a quick, safe flight to test the range and I was pretty impressed (relative to Evo, Anafi, and Mini).

If you look at the N1 controller it’s the same with internal antennas but just in the mount not controller.

Excellent content- thank you! I believe the next firmware update will address issues some folks are having. My mini 3 pro has been performing great. The thing I find odd is why are some folks having bad issues while others are not? The inconsistency in experience does introduce doubt as to this being 100% firmware. Time will tell. There are enough orders out to narrow it down a little now. I don't know of anyone in Canada getting what we in the US get and I don't know anyone in the US that is having issues other than what I explained which is working to point and keep that signal. What's going on in the other CE areas where they are getting under 400 meters is only a guess but as you said there's the ones that are going further with no problem in those areas that boggles me. Some have been advised by DJI to send them back to test so there's more than we will ever know in part of this.

Thanks and I tried to make it known that the point wasn’t that I could fly so far. It was the fact that I had to jump through hoops getting it there as it a very narrow signal band.

@@QCGUY Yeah, like the battery only getting 24 minutes on the Mini3 as so many on CZcams have complained about instead of the advertised 34 minutes. That may be just as important as range and signal strength and please don't say who needs to fly 34 minutes. I absolutely know a lot of us would prefer as long battery life as possible. It is a damn better option to have more than less.
@@HouseGuide First off it’s pretty stupid to say who needs 34 minutes but as long as I’ve been flying quads it’s never been what they advertised. Any seasoned quad pilot will tell you they gave up on that battle long ago which is why I don’t bitch about it either.

Great test. Do you think the proximity of the farms and maybe stray signals would have any affect on the link between the drone and controller the slight dropouts seemed to occur at those points.

Congrats on being a grandpa--I have yet to get to really fly my Mini 3 more than a quick flight before school, as I've been busy wrapping up the school year before work closes for three months. 😀📡 I was taking some pics of the campus for my VP today using my Mini SE, and he was blown away when I lost sight of the drone against the sky, hit RTH, and next thing we knew it landed out our feet. He wants one! Hahaha! Have high hopes the Mini 3 is going to be tops! Thanks Chris--everything is going to okay!

Even a dense line of trees have much more of an effect than people people realize but this definitely needs a straight line pointed from the controller to quad. It’s a challenge anyhow…

I totally agree with you. This issue is similar to the Mavic 3 slow SAT locking problem that has been addressed in Firmware. I would expect the same in this scenario as well. I have noticed that flying mine in low interference areas, the range is not bad at all. Not on par with the Mavic 3 though.

Most range tests I've seen seem to all be done over water/wide open fields/no houses etc - would these drones still get this kind of range in a typical suburban setting with homes/parks around?
No they definitely won’t but most range tests are just to see what it will do and the only way to do that is open areas but most importantly for me is battery life during one so picking areas where I can bail and retrieve if needed is better than landing in a forest or someone’s property.
You seem to have a really nice clear lens on that unit looking pretty good edge to edge. Hope mine is similar when it finally arrives. Really confused what is going on with the range issue have friends in NZ (CE) that have made 6km range so also hope that is me :-) Great test thank you!

I have a question, I have a zino mini se and am having trouble with my video and telemetry freezing which you can see on the FC and APP have you had any of your subscribers with this issue I have been in an email war with HUBSAN for a month now with no fix changing wifi channels going to different locations all with the same problem. Well generally that’s a signal issue and you changed the channels which would be the first thing I would have suggested.
Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the app?
@@QCGUY thanks Chris for your reply yes I have reinstalled the app after a test today and another firmware update when in flight and not recording the telemetry readings worked for around 400 meters as soon as I start to record is when the problem starts, I returned in reverse and the height/distance froze for around 100 meters before it started again I did do a screen record as evidence, I have a suspicion it may be a chip set fault. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks once again Chris

The problem is now getting worse as soon as I start to do a video recording the video is stopping and starting as with all the telemetry on the app and RC when moving forward or backwards but as soon as you stop it looks like everything seems to catch up the when you start moving again it starts all over thank you for your replies

How does it work? It stops when it loses signal or it just falls? Do I have to keep in mind the limits or it stops by itself? im afraid to go over the drone limits and then it falls to the ground

When the original Mini came out there were two separate remotes. One for US/Canada that was only 5.8mhz and CE/Europe that was 2.4 or 5.8 at a much lower power . Now there where folks in Europe that had the fcc model and Folks is the US that were shipped the Europe/CE model. Dji actually had a separate model number for the 2 different controllers. Is it firmware or hardware I don't know.
The wifi birds needed that but it’s all the same units with OC. I’m pretty sure but could be wrong there. 👍🏻

I think you are right about the strong Firmware dependency? Your Theory focusing the Power Regulation is a very reasonalble one! I can add a second Guess! 😃
The DJI Functionality now should be to shift Wi-Fi Frequence due to actual load from other Wi-Fi Sources. If that function by any reason get an error I guess result would be case by case enoying short Range? Well, it´s out of our competence to monitor when a Wi-Fi Frequence should be left due to actual Load. The Frequence Shifting Function should be done due to a Wi-Fi Analyze in both the Drone and the Remote Control? I guess your selected Track in a few areas had some traffic, but not at all like in an urban area!
I was a bit more impressed in my urban flight but I don’t show screen shots for those kind of flights when I’m not in the mood for all the drone police. It’s on my channel though. Thanks

Mini 3 pro with RC controler. I have 3 DJI Drones with 300 flight hours. About half of that here at my rural location over farm land. On one of my first flights at about 450m I lost signal and it went into the auto return home mode. I tried a few times and the range varied from 500m to 700 m when I had such poor signal I was afraid I may lose the drone. After online chat with DJI they suggested I reset the controller to factory setting ( some folks think that is were your area is set ie EU or North America) ? Anyway more test in different area around my home and still poor signal. Not feeling much love from DJi I asked if I should return it now or wait for a fix they were not certain?
I will continue to work with them because I do like this drone and I know they are in short supply and I would hate to lose while they figure out whats wrong.
A product recall would be nice.

Yes once connected to your wifi it detects the region. Another thing to think about is if you have a vpn or if your IP address shows up as another area with a IP vanish.

😂 Don’t even get me started on the proper range test buddy! Some need everything spelled out and with pictures so my expectations of many humans failed.
So I saw the strong wind warning pop up on your video that said it’s unable to RTH automatically and you must drop altitude and RTH manually. I saw that you did indeed drop altitude, yet the red “Tap to cancel RTH” persisted. So why didn’t it cancel itself if it said it was unable to do it automatically?
It’s just a warning to cover its own ass. lol
If I messed up they could say we told you so and your shit outta luck. 😆

Great test um i think 3 ***** is good i personally wouldn't try going that far ,as you mention its just a test , im thinking being in Canada it might be ok but also i agree that DJI will tweak the range in the near future ,for me im not geting the Mini 3 until aug anyway so lets follow up on these updates on your channel , found a super duper deal on a 8 pack set of ND filters so im geting them in july that way ill be all set to buy the Mini 3 pro , CONGRATS on being a grand dad

Yeah I’m not complaining on the distance I can get but do get bothered if it simply won’t come close to advertised and I definitely don’t like having to aim the controller like a laser to get my signal. The range isn’t awful, but is well below what is advertised. I did notice you were at maximum altitude fairly early in the flight. That doesn’t bode well for it reaching close to advertised distances. Good job Chris. Maybe a couple firmware updates will give additional distance.

It’s the fly app which sets the transmission power for the controller and the drone and if that recognises that you are in the CE regulation area then it will reduce power

No I don’t think it’s anything with antennas personally. I totally think they have it safe for now and will tweak increases sneaking it in the firmware.

My issues is I get 3km but it drops from full bars to red all the way along if this was a range issue wouldn’t it drop out at the 3km point
same for me, sometimes signal drop from 5 bars to 1 when i do sphere photo and drone has to rotate 360deg :/
I agree about the fact that DJI can fix the range issue.
The only thing that I’m not sure about or confused is the CE and FCC version firmware. I thought with OCUSYNC there is no FCC and CE version.
They still have to limit signal to CE regions regardless due to there laws/restrictions. That’s done through the app/firmware when it picks up on your location.

All those crops and open fields you put at risk..... I wish I could have read the battery percentage more clearly on the FPV view - it looked like you started out with around 96%, and turned around 56%? Having 30 something percent remaining when you got back. The RTH algorithm looks ok, since I presume you had a tailwind return, maybe the Mini3 will RTH faster with a tailwind, like the Hubsan ZMP. The X8, by contrast, only gives you 9m/s tailwind or not. 2.4G Yagis work very well on the X8 2022, can you use those with the Mini3 controller?
I’m sure some company in China is working on some sort of extender for this one. I don’t care for any of them myself but many like them.
Canada here...having all of the above issues range and direction. Yes in Canada we are FCC. Hope there is a firmware fix for this as I tried it with both the RC and the RC N1 remotes and it's the same. My Mini 2/Mavic 2/Mavic 3...zero issues with range and direction.

@@QCGUY I hope this gets sorted out as this thing is near perfect given the rules around here. A sub 250g drone in Canada basically has no rules...just the guideline of "don't do anything stupid" so that means I can fly as far as I want/as high as I want and where I want...just don't do anything stupid...so to have this with a camera that it offers...it's damn near perfect so I HOPE this gets sorted soon.

I definitely would choose this over the Nano Plus unless you are CE then I would wait a little to see if range is sorted out.

The difference between CE and FCC will be much greater on the 5.8Ghz band, needed in urban environments.

Honestly you can do all the testing your development environment permits, but there is nothing like having end user real-world feedback/data. I think all the info they get back will be used in a future update and hopefully improve things for all. Happy flying.

Horizon looked great and the distance you got in this non congested area vs what you got in town and around a hill on one of your previous videos looks good to me. You have to look at the whole package: video quality, reliability, support, wind handling, flight time etc. Choosing a drone based only on range is like buying a car based only on cylinders.
Actually I do choose cars based on cylinders. 😂 More than that but under 6 and I won’t touch it.
I am looking at the whole package and it stinks. It is not just signal and range but battery tests have been consistently reported to be 24 minutes instead of the advertised 34 minutes. I would be tolerant of 3 to 4 minutes less but absolutely not 10 minutes less. Sorry, but I would not be buying the product I paid for.
@@HouseGuide it’s not for you then but I’m not getting that much less then what some are claiming to get. I’m losing about 6 minutes on average in medium wind. More so on hot hot days….
@@HouseGuide I'm fine with my Mini 2 but lots of people will be pleased with the beautiful camera and obstacle avoidance on Mini 3. Horses for courses as they say.
I called them today and their tech told me a firmware update should be with us within a couple weeks to sort the signal issues

I'm in north Carolina and I've done a test between the mini 3 and my mini 2 and they are around the same if not a little better with the mini 3 pro so it's a random thing for sure

It seems you have no range issues....Maybe you are right, but maybe it´s not the firmware. DJI asked me to send it back (highest range about 1000m lowest 150m). If it was the firmware why DJI asked me to send it back? I also had this hope about a frimware problem but now I think its a hardware problem. Perhaps they had to change the provider of certain components during production. This would explain why some have problems while others don´t.
Could very well be but with what I’m seeing although it’s favorable range it’s not easily done. It’s like I need a laser to be dead on the quad to keep that signal.
Pay attention to your firmware when you get it back and ask them for a detailed explanation in writing as to what was the problem. I would love to see that! Thanks 😊 ✌️

in a bussy village in the Netherlands i can get 600 meters before i get a weak signal. i am happy with the range though.

I completely agree with you. In UK I have had some disappointing range problems and concur that reduced power output is almost certainly the issue. I am an Intermediate Amateur Radio operator and power really does play a big part in transmission distance. This is really no different in principle. I did outright ask DJI Support if CE's were attenuated because of 'local' restrictions but got no response. I love the drone but don't agree with the optimistic and quite misleading advertising. Thanks for your video, I'll be watching for differences in future firmware upgrades 🙂

If upgraded firmware increases power output, won't that shorten already horrible battery time from numerous CZcams reports of only 24 minutes.

I have yet to see a reviewer actually show the return to home completed to the site of takeoff, if someone knows of a video European or North American please confirm the video. Are there issues related to home base return?
I can only tell you it’s as good as most are and you won’t find videos of me doing it these days in flights like this. Everyone wants to bust you but they need to catch you on the sticks to do so.
With the RC2, the range should be even better.

This drone needs the classic toy quadcopter antenna mod where you pull out the antennas and put them up vertically.

This kind of issue is the reason no one (except testers/reviewers) should preorder or be the first to buy a NEW drone. Wait til they fix everything. People should be buying the mini 3 next spring.
I also know the rules. But everyone wants to find out what the drone can do. I got a range of 1600 meters over my home town in CE mode. I found a FCC patch for my rc controller and omg 4500 meters range. At 120 meters high. So i was just curious about the range of my Mini 3 pro. Loving every day

This is evidence of what the Mini-3 can do yes,,, in those conditions though,, out where there is no interference at all... Now we need a City Test,, where there are Obstacles & Signals abundance... That would cover both sides of the coin giving a full analysis of our new Flying... 🐸 🐸 🐸

It wasn’t a point to show what it could do but I’ve done both and I’ve explained my theory here so it’s not always clear to everyone because not everyone follows everything I do or watches enough to get the whole story.

If firmware, they messed up. Time will tell. My theory is they overheat during firmware install. Time will tell. I kept cool during upload.. I get 6k meter's. All the time... ?? Better safe than sorry..why I cooled.. test is correct.. normal use.. not neccessary. God bless.. or peace and love lol💪💪👊👊
Why oh why do they advertise how far this thing will fly when it get's no where near, yes we all know about keeping line of sight but that's beside the point. If they say it will fly a certain distance then it should. I did watch a video where the transmitter without the built in screen was used and the range was considerably improved and no disconnection issues. I have to disagree with the idea that DJI may have released this deliberately with lower transmission power as a kind of test. That in my opinion would be foolish and pointless. This is another excellent drone but as with many manufacturers, they rush these things out with hyped up advertising to get orders before thoroughly testing. We expect firmware updates as time goes by but this range issue should have been sorted before release. It will only serve to damage their reputation.
I don’t know your experience with DJI or drones in general but this is something they all do bud.
Yes they certainly would release with less signal strength because this drone is loaded up for a small sub 250g and everyone that has made these mini’s has done the same thing. Cut it short because it can’t handle the full specs it was advertised to do. False advertising? Maybe but if that’s the case they all falsely advertise battery flight time and camera specs like never being able to achieve something like 10bit.
This is very typical and from further flights and testing especially against the mini 2 I feel good standing behind my thoughts on the issue I see here in the US.

It's good to know that as long as one writes or says, "I know the rules" and "this is a test" that the FAA will lift the VLOS requirement. So, who's the dick? The FAA doesn’t search CZcams for rule breakers, they aren’t sitting in the woods waiting and they aren’t making any rules based on what I’m doing here. In fact they are lightening up in the VLOS with BVLOS and only react like they do because of crying little bitches reporting people. That’s when they have to react! Keep you Karen’s pacified! 🖕
