The silver tipped pencils have been around for at least 500 years but using more precious metals.... Literally silverpoint. Using silver to mark the parchment. Leonardo da Vinci as well as other artists used them
I have a silverpoint pen that I bought a while back on a visit to Italy for the love and geekiness that I have for this stuff... I love the pen and the idea of the thing, but I feel it needs too much pressure and has a weird squeakiness and "grabbyness" to it when in use.... Bear in mind these were used by the artists of the past on parchment covered in bone dust gesso, so the surface was much coarser than todays papers, so they would have got a darker mark much easier, and the squeakiness may not have been an issue.
Sorry for the geeking out.... Art degree and all that nerdiness got me carried away

Practically speaking, I see no point. I'd rather use a mechanical pencil. You can use a huge variety of lead grades, and said leads, even the softest ones, last AGES as long as you don't break them.

With a mechanical pencil you also have the option of a long lead which can give you very low angles for mark making (like using the overhand grip). Way more versatile. You can also really sharpen them for incredibly fine detail work.

Great review, thankyou. Appreciated the visual differences side by side, and your impressions. My intent is to use this for contracting when measuring or marking wood, etc. So I'm thinking that one of these would be a useful tool, since a sharpener is usually not around when the lead is dull!

I'll take the regular pencil. I enjoy using a sharpener..but it's definitely an interesting idea and conversation starter like you mentioned towards the end of your video.

Thanks for this video, my friend said that what he wanted as a gift was pencils and I was looking for something actually neat and this is neat! And pretty unbiased so I really appreciate that. Not sure if I’ll actually get them because he might lose any tip refills but still thank you!

I like how they call it the writing experience, everything has this clever marketing “experience” word to sell the products. Whether it’s a pen, or piece of paper they add on the experience word and suddenly it’s a craze. When it’s just a pen ffs
