Thanks JP! I like Suede a lot - Punk & Glam together. There's another song called 'Moving' by a great band called Supergrass. I don't think I've seen you react to them yet but that could be a real good place to start.

Molving is a banger, but the next song Pantomime Horse is a masterpiece. I dont think there is a bad song on this album.

I think it's important to put Suede in some context. Grunge, Michael Jackson and very 'American' music was ruling the British charts, and Suede burst onto the scene with this kind of gender-bending, wistful yet also kickass style that was proper British eccentricity yet felt like both the past and the future all at once. Plus they really helped resurrect a showmanship and live gig experience that had sort of started losing its way in the UK. They're still great, still an amazing live band, and still deliciously subversive.

They were part of the broader Britpop scene that also yielded Blur, Pulp, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and a ton of other fantastic bands. That was my mid-20s and it was fantastic ❤

I love Suede and remember buying their debut album on its day of release. American Grunge releases around that time, notably Nirvana's 'Nevermind', Soundgarden 's 'Badmotorfinger', and 'Dirt' from Alice In Chains were all killer moments, and should not be played off against Suede as some kind of drug fuelled alternative. I had no difficulty appreciating these excellent albums, alongside the unique English mores that Suede were exploring!

It's sooo good... I can't explain. I think it doesn't happens with other artists.
    Keep going, JP 😅

Similar to The Smiths' "What She Said" on _Meat Is Murder,_ "Moving" is just a short, high energy *link* between the dreamy "She's Not Dead" and the epic centerpiece "Pantomime Horse". You do yourself a disservice not listening to these songs in context of the album's flow.

Morrissey in fact covered the Suede song "My insatiable one" on his early 90s tour. Also when Suede were searching for a drummer, Mike Joyce of The Smiths appeared and they recorded some Demos together but finally didn't accept him because they didn't want to become Mike Joyce's new band (i think he plays on the demo only song Be My God). You still didn't react to their best music.. If you want amazing guitar work you have to listen to The Asphalt World. Also The Wild Ones for some incredible voice performance which is one of the best ever. :) Also.. hearing Moving now and it's lyrics which are talking about gender fluidity back in 1993 proves how they were ahead of their time... Britpop bands like oasis and blur were fighting with each other like school kids while Suede made pure art.

Yet another great song from this fantastic album, and another sweet review and analysis of CZcams's master reviewer - I was really happy to get a notification that you're continuing with this album :) I agree with Brett's voice having some similarities to Morrissey's, at least in high-energy songs early in Suede's career. Not a favorite from the album but even my less preferred songs here are almost perfect.

Never got into Suede - the band or the fabric. I'm more of a Denim guy. Why was there never a band called Denim? (Actually, a quick Google shows that there was - led by Lawrence of Felt - but I doubt if I would have liked that)

Only a few tracks I really like from this band. I think it's also got to do with brett anderson's vocal manierisms, which are not really for me.

I never really listened to Suede back in the 90s, when I was probably the right age to start taking notice of them, but I never did.
Instead, I had formed an impression that their songs were just all whiney, sneery pieces of angst put to music.
I'm probably 100% wrong and I'm sure their fans could say "Listen to THIS!" to prove me wrong but that's the impression I made back when I was very young (like, sub 10yo) and it's stuck with me ever since cos that's what 'formative years' means.
