  • In 1523, Swedish King Gustav I. Vasa gathered 16 of his bravest and most loyal soldiers around him and appointed them to be his royal bodyguards. From this day on, the Swedish Royal Guards were tasked to guard the King and the royal family in their palace in Stockholm with their lives. Throughout the centuries the Royal Guard took on many names, outfits, and weapons, yet their mission remained the same. They joined the King on his military campaigns, protected him from assassins, and policed the royal estate.

Yugoslavia was later on broken up into a bunch of new countries in the 1990s. So very few countries have been independent for a long time. And almost the entire world aside from Turkey, Persia,Japan and China fell under European rule. And later on declared independence after WW2. Czechoslovakia and Poland establishes in 1918 for example but before that they were countries in medieval times and also later. The reasoning given here for the cancelled collaboration is extremely vague compared to what happened. The Swedish Army Staff Office had initially approved the collaboration, but when it surfaced that Sabaton had performed for the Night Wolves (Motorcycle organisation from Russia with close ties to Putin) in occupied Crimea back in 2015 (and not acknowledging how controversial that looks), they decided that as part of the Swedish State they couldn't work with the band because of the implications that meant since the Swedish government still considers Crimea to be illegally occupied.

Sweden doesn't like Russia and for good reasons. It's a dictatorship and we've had wars with them in the past. The Swedish army's decision not to cooperate with Sabaton was because of their playing in Crimea. Sabaton did this however before it got very infected and probably didn't think too much about the political consequences behind it. They're a band after all not a political entity. The Swedish army however is very political and has serious responsibilities that go past the enjoyment of music.
Sabaton however has no liking to Putin or his fascist government and the army knows this. Hence why if you look at Försvarsmakten's Facebook you'll see them sharing the Livgardet song and thanking Sabaton for it. People in the Swedish army love Sabaton and the army likes Sabaton in general. This was not personal it was just politics.

I am a proud ex-RO-officer in the Royal Guard, the Livgardet. I did not hear you mention the Livgardet motto - Possunt Nec Posse Videntur, they did what seemed impossible. Through history, that motto was earned in many battles over the centuries. When I was active, Livgardet specialised in two main things, mechanized and urban combat. We trained to be the first into battle to protect not just the King and country's leadership, but to repell any attack on our Capital. These are of course also the objectives today. I feel very grateful that Sabaton made an exception and accepted the Swedish army's request to create this song.

Fun addition to this could have been the mention of His Majesties Norske Garde, the current Royal Guard of the Norwegian King. After the Napoleonic wars Denmark lost Norway to Sweden (Sweden fought its last war in 1814 against Norway) who had lost Finland to Russia. In 1856 the Swedish Norwegian Union king asked that Norwegian soldiers should be posted in Stockholm in order to reflect the Union. So the Norwegian Garde was established and served there until 1888 when the Norwegian government ordered them to serve in Christiania (Oslo) in stead. They have since 1905 been the guards to the Norwegian royal house, fought against the Germans during the invasion in 1940 and were deployed around the castle and streets of Oslo during the terror attack of 2011.

Karl XII spent most of his time abroad, some powerful families ought to have disliked that? However, Norwegian researchers, Swedish included, have in recent years leaned towards him being killed by a canister shot, shot from a Norwegian cannon.

I swear, Sabaton has far more variation to the types of songs they write than any other band of any genre. You'd expect a band which is called a metal band to be all metal all the time, but here they are writing an awesome orchestral and choir song. They even wrote a ballad once. You don't see such variation from other bands and artists.
