    Singapore is like the Switzerland of Asia. Super rich and neutral. Being a tiny country, you've got to maintain neutrality and good relations with everyone. It's one of the few countries in the world that has good relations with China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, North Korea, South Korea, and the USA. Hence, Singapore is a suitable neutral ground to host top level diplomacy meetings. The most famous recent one being Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump meeting at Singapore. China and Taiwan's presidents have also both met at Singapore.

      @bangscutter Před 3 lety +178

      @@josexavier1685 The lower part of South China Sea area (where Singapore is) is geologically stable and free from cyclones and tsunamis. Indonesia and Philippines act as shields against those natural disasters. Singapore knows its vulnerability as a small island nation. This is why it has mandatory military conscription for men, and ensure it has the strongest / most advanced navy, air force, and air defence systems. What they lack in numbers, they make up for in quality.
      But Singapore need not worry about war with its immediate neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia. They have strong ties with each other and everyone would lose out in a military conflict. Similar sort of relationship like in Switzerland with France and Germany. The ASEAN region is now getting more united due to China's encroachment into the South China Sea.
      Israel too, is in a similar situation, where it has military conscription and the most advanced weaponry to make up for it being surrounded by larger countries. The difference compared to Singapore and Switzerland, is that the surrounding countries are actually hostile with a history of wars since its existence.

    As a Singaporean and a long time viewer of this channel, I've been looking forward to this episode since a long time ago! The facts and cultures were well researched and appropriately presented. The delicate balance of ethnic groups, nature vs urban and order vs freedom are well presented too. There were a few minor mistakes though.
    At 1:56, the northeast Island is the military island named pulau tekong, not the South. The exchange rate with the Malaysian ringgit is approximately 3:1 right now and we often joked that the stuff there is 3 times cheaper, not 4 times. At 27:12, Malaysians stay in Malaysia and they often come to Singapore. Not malays specifically. Being both ethnically diverse nations, our people are known by our citizenship, and not our race. For example, I am a Singaporean Chinese, and not just known as a Chinese.
    We do still have issues of our own despite how well we're doing. We have a high income disparity, a pressure cooker education and work system, an aging population, a huge percentage of foreigners, limited freedom of speech, and being the most expensive country to live in.
